Welcome

R

oyal Ascot is the oldest golf club in the area, dating back to 1887. But it now plays on one of the newest and best courses in Berkshire, having moved from its old course on Ascot Heath in the middle of the racecourse in 2005.

The challenging 6,294 yard parkland course (HSBC Golf Monthly Gold Medal Award) on 150 acres of wooded Crown land was described by one former Ryder Cup player as “one of the best new English courses I have played for a long time.” It is a Members’ Club, but welcomes Visitors, Societies, Guests, and Charity Events.

There are active Gents and Ladies’ Sections, a flourishing Seniors’ Group, and a highly successful Juniors’ Section. Members are offered reciprocal arrangements with other ‘Royal Clubs’ worldwide and a number of Local Golf Clubs. We now have a successful Golf Academy Scheme for Beginners and Intermediate Golfers. Royal Ascot Golf Club is renowned for its friendly welcome, the Staff, Committee, Directors and Members will do their utmost to make your time with us as enjoyable as possible, and one you will wish to repeat.

A Golf Club Steeped In History

R

oyal Ascot Golf Club was founded by local barrister F.J. Patton in 1887, and given Royal status by Queen Victoria later that year. Many of her children learned to play golf at Royal Ascot and The Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII , was made patron of the club in 1901. At first, Royal Ascot and Ascot Ladies’ golf clubs each had a 9-hole course on Ascot Heath in the middle of the racecourse. In 1895 the two clubs amalgamated and a new 18-hole course was designed by J.H. Taylor (pictured), then holder of the Open Championship which

he won five times. Joseph Longhurst was appointed the first club professional in 1887. In 1921 RAGC hosted the inaugural British Boys Championship on the Heath, and presented the R & A with a cup for an annual tournament which is still played for today. The Championship was held on the Heath again in 1922. That first year both Henry Cotton and his brother played. After the war the 1959 British Ladies’ Amateur Championship was held at Royal Ascot and the event was won by Elizabeth Price of England. The club celebrated its Centenary in 1987 with a week of events opened by Henry Cotton.

When the Ascot Racecourse Authority announced plans in the year 2000 for a major redevelopment of the racecourse it became necessary to look for a new location and the former Ascot Farm site was selected. RAGC moved into its new clubhouse in November 2004 and the course was opened for play in August 2005 (Barry Lane, a distinguished member and former Ryder Cup player, competed in the first match) and was formally opened by the club patron HRH Prince Andrew, Duke of York, in May 2006.

Hole By Hole

O

ver the following pages can learn about the trials tribulations of each hole pick up some play tips from our professionals.

you and and club

Hole 1 (Minchin View), 229 yards, par 3

From the medal tee a stiff opener, playing 229 yards but slightly downhill. Take one club more than you think. Don’t ruin your round here, keep it in play, avoid rough to the right.

Hole 2 (Brick Kiln), 535 yards, par 5

An acute dogleg right par 5 of over 500 yards, anything leaking right down the length of the hole will be hard to find in deep rough. Wide of this rough is Out of Bounds. The central guarding front bunker is some 25 yards from the putting surface. The green is small, with some devilish pin locations.

Hole 3 (Thistle Carry), 366 yards, par 4

A shortish par 4 that appears easy on the card, not so, as it requires a cleanly-hit drive over a wide environmental hazard, the shorter route being down the right. A string of bunkers guard the fairway, but a large green awaits.

12 | 2019 - 2020 | R oya l A s c o t G o l f C l u b

Hole 4 (J H Taylor), 320 yards, par 4

Respite at last, a chance of a birdie. Lay tee shot up before the replica JH Taylor bunker, trust yardage to pin as bunker foreshortens the approach shot. Green has a lot of subtle borrows, usually turns more than you think.

Hole 5 (Brewer’s Pond), 503 yards, par 5

A double dogleg par 5 to a heavily contoured triple-tiered green. Drive towards the fairway bunker you can see from the tee. If you fancy taking the green on in two take plenty of club, trees and deep rough extend on your line to within 10 yards of the green. If laying up, play towards the left-hand fairway cross-bunker, this will open the green up for the third. Don’t putt it off the green.

“The central guarding front bunker is some 25 yards from the putting surface. The green is small, with some devilish pin locations.“

Hole 6 (Bluebell), 178 yards, par 3

An aesthetically pleasing short hole that due to its angle plays longer than is shown on the card. A four-leaf clover shape of green means you could be on the surface, having to putt from it. Play to the centre of the green every time, a par is very acceptable.

Hole 7 (Water Meadow), 398 yards, par 4

Plays the second hardest hole on the course. Don’t be tempted to carry the water hazard from the tee, the landing area is minute. Take a club from the tee that you hit 200 yards and play it down the right side of the fairway, this will save having to carry the large oak on the left with your second. The approach shot is uphill to a green facing you, play a running shot in, aiming at right side of the green, it will feed towards the centre.

Hole 8 (Grey Poplar) 139 yards, par 3

Shortest hole on course, but into the prevailing wind to a small green well protected with bunkers. Correct clubbing will be required to secure par, the green is very narrow. A far right pin position asks a lot of questions of the golfer. >>

2019 - 2020 | R oya l A s c o t G o l f C l u b | 13

Hole By Hole Hole 9 (Ascot Farm), 400 yards, par 4

From the tee looks like an open hole, but don’t be fooled. The drive has to be correctly placed, keeping it left of the fairway bunker, right of the large tree on the left of the fairway and not so long as to go in the cross fairway water hazard that cannot be seen from the tee. Second will be with a medium to long iron to a large green, many subtle turns will be found on this putting surface.

CONTINUED

Hole 10 (Gray’s Copse) 371 yards, par 4

A well-struck drive to the left of the dead oak in the woods will leave the opportunity to set up a good back nine. Don’t go long with the second shot, over the green is a deep ditch. A gentle start to the homeward journey.

Hole 11 (Old Waterfield), 178 yards, par 3

A 190-yard par 3 that often plays with a cross wind. Avoid the greenside bunkers if you can, they are the most penal on the course. The green deserves a deal of respect, it is heavily contoured.

14 | 2019 - 2020 | R oya l A s c o t G o l f C l u b

Hole 12 (Henry Cotton) 409 yards, par 4

Stroke index 1 and deservedly so. Don’t ruin a hard fought for score at this point, play well within your limitations. Drive at the part of the fairway you can see, play second towards the green and if you have to use your short game to secure your par the green is receptive.

Hole 13 (Keepers) 186 yards, par 3

A short hole that is deceptively long, rely on the given distance, it is correct. As you walk to the green you will see the dead ground that foreshortens this hole. The only one on the eighteen not to have a bunker, but watch for the dip before the green.

“The only one on the eighteen not to have a bunker, but watch for the dip before the green.“

Hole 14 (Havell’s Field) 430 yards, par 4

A dogleg right, with an environmental hazard tight to the right of the green. Drive must be played down the left side of fairway, avoid like the plague the oaks and deep rough on the right. Approach shots can be run onto this par 4 green and will require a medium to long iron.

Hole 15 (F J Patton), 478 yards, par 5

A par 5 that doglegs left and is reachable in two by the longer hitters. Aim your drive to the left of the oak on the right side of fairway. Keep second shot straight to avoid penal rough to both left and right of fairway. A good chance to pick up a shot to par, the green is large and reasonably flat.

Hole 16 (Woodend) 425 yards, par 4

Hang on to your hat, the start of a difficult finish. A tough, long and tight par 4 where the drive is everything. To secure your round ensure you get your drive in play, if you have to play a four iron from the tee that should be your choice. The bunker that appears to guard the front right of the green is some 25 yards from the putting surface; don’t be fooled into taking too short a club. Use your stroke wisely on this hole. >>

2019 - 2020 | R oya l A s c o t G o l f C l u b | 15

16 | 2019 - 2020 | R o ya l A s c o t G o l f C l u b

Hole By Hole >> Hole 17 (Furlong) 218 yards, par 3 Another tough par 3 of some 218 yards. Bunkers guard both sides of the green and the putting surface is generously contoured. Play a low chasing shot at the right side of the green, the slope will assist to feed it on to the green.

Hole 18 (Hungry Hill) 531 yards, par 5

Decision time on Hungry Hill. A sweeping par 5 that doglegs right up the hill to a green that is located directly in front of the clubhouse. The scratch player may consider flying the first ditch at 265 yards, with his drive, leaving a 230-yard uphill shot to the green that is located just over a small lake. The sensible play is an opening shot to short of the ditch, ensuring you do not block yourself behind the oaks on the left. Keep the second up the left of the fairway to give a view of green and less water to carry with your third. A par will send you away happy to the 19th hole.

M

embers at Royal Ascot enjoy a full programme of golf throughout the year. There are fixtures against other clubs, together with much competition to be enjoyed alongside fellow members, some for silverware and some of a more social nature.

Men

The men are keen supporters of the competitions run by the county, entering the Hillman Trophy, a knockout event featuring seven players per club which is run throughout the season. Royal Ascot also puts forward pairings for the Club Foursomes Championship, a one-day event featuring two rounds of golf and the Champion Club, which follows a similar format but for teams of three where the best two scores count. Then there is the hugely popular Mail on Sunday National Golf Club Classic, a foursomes knockout competition entered by more than 3,000 clubs each year including Royal Ascot.

30 | 2019 - 2020 | R oya l A s c o t G o l f C l u b

In addition, there are around a dozen friendly fixtures each year. Generally they feature five or six pairs per club playing fourball betterball. While it is always nice to win, good golf and good company are much more important than the final result. Matches are either followed by both teams sitting down for a meal together or preceded by brunch. Within the Club there are a minimum of four competitions a month including Monthly Medals and Stablefords both at weekends and in midweek. There are also quite a few honours board competitions which mainly take place at weekends, with singles and foursomes knockout competitions running throughout the season.

“The central guarding front bunker is some 25 yards from the putting surface. The green is small, with some devilish pin locations.“

The Club Championship is held towards the end of the season and is unusual in that, like tournament golf, it features a “cut”. After the first 18 holes the leading dozen or so low handicappers and the best 18 higher handicappers make it through to the second day to decide the prize-winners. The Club Captain’s Annual Charity is always well supported and one of the focal fundraising events of the year is the Captain’s Charity Day. Some 20 or so teams of four play over 18 holes followed by a sit-down dinner. Comedian Tom O’Connor, who is a Royal Ascot member, has been kind enough in the past to

do a cabaret and run the auction to end a very memorable day on a high.

Ladies

The Ladies enjoy 19 friendly matches, home and away against other clubs throughout the season, playing either singles or pairs. Many of these are longstanding fixtures. There are also inter-club matches, one-day events held throughout the year contested by ladies from several local clubs. Badgemore, for instance, hosts one in October. Within the club there are medals, Stablefords and roll-ups and something to appeal almost every week of the year. The ladies normally play on a Tuesday and tend to play on a Saturday and Sunday as well.

There is also a roll-up on Thursdays. Royal Ascot is a very friendly and welcoming club and the ladies go out of their way to make new members welcome and integrate them into the club. >>

Playing Categories >> An Open Day is held once a month throughout the season, where potential new members can play nine holes with a member of the Ladies’ section and have a chat about what the club has to offer. There are mixed competitions and the ninehole mixed social evenings which begin in April and run throughout the season show the togetherness within the club. Normally held on the first Friday of every month, they start in the late afternoon at around 5.30pm and employ fun formats such as Texas Scramble. The golf is followed by a meal afterwards. A lovely social occasion, the evenings have

CONTINUED

proved incredibly popular and are a fine example of what being a member of a golf club should be about. The trophies to be played for are numerous. The Club Championship played over 36 holes on successive weekends, features scratch and nett prizes. The Winter Greensomes, the Challenge Cup (a singles knockout) and the American Tournament (a singles competition but played on a round-robin basis) are among the other notable competitions. To finish the season, there is Finals Day, which takes place in October, where the destination of many of the year’s silverware is decided.

32 | 2019 - 2020 | R oya l A s c o t G o l f C l u b

Berkshire County run a series of competitions for silver, bronze and higher handicaps which Royal Ascot enters. Spring and autumn meetings feature a single round of medal play at a Berkshire club, while there are also singles knockout competitions for individuals. Then there are the county’s team events. The Duncan Trophy is a singles matchplay knockout team competition contested by five ladies per club with handicaps of 10-25 and the Inter Club Shield is a one-day team Stableford with best two scores of three to count.

For the older ladies, Berkshire also runs a series of matches and competitions, most of which are handicap related.

Seniors

The Seniors’ play in an inter-club competition through the year featuring home and away matches against 16 other local clubs. It represents an excellent opportunity to play on some of the other fine courses neighbouring our own. Featuring between six and eight pairs per team, fixtures generally take place in the morning. There are always very relaxed and friendly occasions, normally beginning with coffee and biscuits and a chat and finishing with a pleasant lunch and a presentation.

Equally enjoyable are two matches against the Juniors each year and one against the Ladies.

There are half a dozen roll-ups in a typical week, teeing off in the morning, which though on offer for the whole club, see the Seniors to the fore. Members put their ball in a bag and teams of three or four are drawn. This is an excellent way for new members to be made to feel they are part of the club and many new friends are playing partners and made in a short space of time.

The Seniors may take part in all the main club competitions and in addition have their own Stableford roll-up which is usually held on the first Monday of the month. There are also a separate
