WELCOME Whether a new or prospective member, a visitor or organising a society, the members, management and staff of Royal Cromer Golf Club offer you a very warm welcome. Royal Cromer, with its stunning clifftop setting, is ranked in the top 100 courses in the UK. The 18 holes provide a genuine challenge, toughened when the wind is blowing, for golfers of all abilities. In addition, you will find a spacious Clubhouse with good food and an excellent bar. There is a well-stocked Pro Shop with practice facilities and equipment hire available. Above all Royal Cromer Golf Club is known for its warmth and friendliness. The Club, one of only 66 ‘royal’ clubs in the world, is fully inclusive, with ladies’, veterans’ and junior sections all flourishing. And while enjoyment is the key goal we also place a premium on the quality of competitive play. The Club has achieved notable successes at every level in
the County over the past few years with skills doubtless honed in our many club competitions. The Club was formed in 1888 and, while we are rightly proud of our history, ours is a forward looking organisation. Extensive and ongoing course developments have greatly enhanced the playing experience and we look forward to hosting some high profile tournaments in the future. We are signatories to the England Golf Women in Golf Charter, have a thriving junior section and are actively promoting sustainable environmental practice both on and off the course.
I find Cromer excellent for writing, but the golf even better. Oscar Wilde, 1892 w w w.roya l crom ergol fclu b.com

OUR COURSE The 18 holes that stretch alongside the Cromer and Overstrand cliffs are the result of over 100 years of development and care. Whether battered by winds, or bathed in evening sunlight, and with the sea visible from virtually every hole, the course always reminds you that golf is about more than mere scores. We are progressing with an ambitious long-term plan that has seen major improvements in course design and conditioning including the creation of new teeing areas and significant enhancements to parts of the rough. New plans are currently being imagined and discussed which will doubtless see the course maintain its reputation as a tough but fair challenge for golfers of all abilities. For both members and visitors, four sets of tees allow everybody to play and compete on a course that suits
their game. These range from the nearly 6600 yard white course to the more modest 5600 yard blue course. Safeguarding the quality of the course is an experienced and talented team of greenstaff who work to present the course with outstanding conditioning throughout the year.
More than just a golf course The cliffs, on which the course is situated, are now protected by law. Originally created by sea erosion they are steadily collapsing as a result of rainfall seeping through the subsoil. For those who wish to explore the course in greater detail prior to their visit, follow the link on our website to view our stunning 360-degree course tour.

OUR COURSE CONTINUED Coastal erosion creates an ever-changing mosaic of habitats, wet to dry, bare soil to scrub. These support over 300 plant species and more than 100 bird and insect species. An example of our attraction to wildlife can be seen in the birds of prey. The current list comprises eight species, including red kites, buzzards, kestrels, sparrow hawks and peregrine falcons. Occasionally a majestic young sea eagle will explore the cliffs and tawny owls hunt at night in the woodlands and across the course. Today our golf course management is carefully planned to maximise biodiversity with a range of initiatives built into our working practices:

The opening of the first clubhouse in 1888
History Despite its early royal connections, Royal Cromer Golf Club owes its beginnings to a stonemason and prominent trade unionist, Henry Broadhurst MP. He represented four midlands constituencies during his career but liked to holiday in Norfolk … and was buried in Overstrand, a mile from the course. On one trip he noted that the land seaward of the ‘new’ lighthouse (the current building) would make an excellent location for a links course. With the support of a number of prominent locals, a club was formed in 1887, at the height of the Great British golfing boom. The land in question was duly rented out by Lord Suffield and royal patronage was granted by the then Prince of Wales, later to become King Edward VII. Early in 1888 the first tee shot was struck on the 9-hole course by local notary and founder member, Benjamin Bond Cabbell.
The Prince of Wales never actually played here but several royals, and numerous writers, including Tennyson, Conan-Doyle and Wilde, did enjoy the course. The popularity of the Club in those early years was helped by a boom in railway travel and the popular appeal of ‘Poppyland’ – the name given to the area by visiting artists and writers.
Old Tom Morris Although not responsible for the original nine holes, Old Tom Morris was instrumental in planning the course as it moved to 18 holes. His imprint, the man who helped design Carnoustie, Muirfield and St Andrews Old Course among others, can still be seen in parts of today’s course.

John Scott Gold Medal, presented in 1897
History CONTINUED Cliff falls, and some serious financial problems, beset the early committees but by 1914 the Club was relatively stable. The First World War changed that of course, but matters were helped by the then Club President, Lord Suffield, waiving the annual rent during that uncertain economic period. It was in 1905 that the Ladies British Amateur Open Championship was held at Royal Cromer. Prior to the event, attended by players from around Britain, Ireland and the United States, a number of friendly international matches were organised. It was after one of these events that sisters Margaret and Harriet Curtis, from the US, offered to provide a trophy for future such matches. The idea of the Curtis Cup, Great Britain and Ireland amateur ladies versus the US, was conceived … although its birth didn’t actually arrive until 1932.
Taylor and Braid Major course developments around 1911 were overseen by noted designer J H Taylor (Aldeburgh and Ipswich, Purdis Heath) and then in the mid-1920s further significant improvements were made by the noted Scottish course architect, James Braid (Gleneagles, Kings and Royal Troon, Old). After the world wars golf at Royal Cromer settled down to a more regular pattern. Some notable exhibition matches were arranged; Tony Jacklin kindly described our 14th hole as one of the best he had ever played. There was also a succession of notable head greenkeepers and professionals during this period.

Playing the 16th green in the early 1900s
History CONTINUED In 1976 the Club was finally able to purchase the freehold for the land on which the course stands. In 1988 there were considerable celebrations for the Club’s Centenary including a full dress (literally) re-enactment of a GB&I v US match. In 2007 television celebrity Ross Kemp officially opened a considerably refurbished Clubhouse. Today the Club, like the rest of the nation, is recovering from the effects of Covid but the future certainly looks very bright.
The History Room Many more details of both course and Club developments, plus artefacts, maps and photographs from our history,
Old Tom Morris can all be seen around the Clubhouse and specifically in The ‘History Room’ now officially called the Henry Broadhurst room. This room is the brainchild of current Club Manager Jonathan Moore and is worth a visit, if only to remind yourself that, in playing at Royal Cromer, you are a small part of a very long and prestigious tradition.

The Clubhouse After a challenging, but stimulating, round you will want to relax in the Clubhouse where you will immediately feel the welcoming atmosphere that is the hallmark of Royal Cromer Golf Club. We have a range of beers, plus a good selection of wine and spirits, carefully selected by our Bar Manager, Meghan. Then, drink in hand, you can relax in one of the seating areas and talk over the game. If you are hungry, you can have a snack in the bar; or you may prefer to have a sit down meal in the dining area. Our menu is full of meals and snacks in addition to which, there are usually some delicious specials devised by our talented chef, Henri, on a regular basis. All around you will be memorabilia reflecting the history of this famous Club. These include letters from Buckingham Palace confirming the ‘Royal’ status. There
are old photos from the Club’s inception; and ones showing the first ever ladies match between the UK and the USA – which then went on to become the Curtis Cup. You may also wish to read an interesting letter sent to a member in the 1930’s, which is about his choice of language on the course. The relaxing and comfortable atmosphere of our Clubhouse will make you feel at home from the moment you enter it and our friendly and attentive staff are always on hand to make sure your time, spent enjoying our Clubhouse facilities, is the most pleasant it can possibly be. Before you leave, do please add your contribution to our Visitors’ Book. You will see comments made by golfers from all over the world who have really enjoyed the Royal Cromer experience. w w w.roya l crom ergol fclu b.com

1st hole looking back from the green
Hole-by-Hole Tour In the hole titles the white and yellow par score is shown before that of the red and blue (ladies’) tees. Note that if men play from the red or blue they will have different pars on some holes. The distance shown is that from the white plate. The wind can be a major factor when playing at Royal Cromer. Always check the direction – the holes don’t always run parallel to one another – and speed.
Hole 2 (Jimmy Clements) Par 4, 383 yards
Hole 1 (The Osiers) Par 4/5, 439 yards
Hole 3 (Sycamores) Par 4, 315 yards
The first offers a generous fairway target to ease golfers into the tough challenge ahead. A clean drive down the left hand side will give you the best chance of making the green in regulation … but take care. The fairway slopes from left to right and there is a line of bunkers on the bend of the dogleg with a lateral hazard in the crook of the bend. Whether you are playing this as a par 4 or par 5, also beware of the bunkers that are found on the approach to the pin.
Very long hitters could be tempted to go for the green but be warned, the narrow target is well protected. The best advice is to check how far the left-hand bunker and the right-hand out-of-bounds are from your tee … and plan accordingly. The middle or left-hand side of the fairway are the best lines of attack; the greenside bunkers add spice to the approach shot.
The safe bet, on this short dogleg par 4, is to hit a short approach and find the green at the second attempt. However any big hitters could easily be tempted to go for the green in one. If that is the strategy you choose to take, it is worth noting that a low flying shot will see your ball end up in the trees so be sure you clear them by a decent distance.

6th hole (nearest the cliff), alongside the 10th
Hole-by-Hole Tour Continued Hole 4 (Parsons Hat) Par 4/5, 456 yards A whole 140 or so yards longer than the par 4 that precedes it, it is crucial to hit the fairway and keep the ball left. Going right could find you in the fairway bunker or out of bounds in the trees. The green can be visually deceptive. Trust this guide and not your eyes: there is a downhill slope from near the front edge so it is safer to play your shot to the green short rather than long.
Hole 5 (Woodside) Par 5/4, 492 yards A decent drive down the left of the fairway will give you the best chance of going for an eagle and reaching the green in two. That said, the left side can be harder to find than the more generous slopes to the right. Fairway bunkers can make the approach tricky, especially if the wind is blowing. Despite the forward tee, those playing this as a par 4 will find it a real challenge. The small
20
w w w.roya l crom ergol fclu b.com
raised and sloping green, (right to left) demands an accurate approach.
Hole 6 (Cliffhanger) Par 4/5, 457 yards As the name of the hole suggests, this is a tough par 4 (stoke index 1) which tests a golfer’s nerves. The cliff edge can make for an intimidating tee shot but a good drive down the centre of the fairway should avoid all hazards. The raised green can give the impression of a closer pin. Check your distance carefully and be long enough as this deceptive green falls more from back to front than it initially appears to.
Hole 7 (Punch Bowl) Par 4, 411 yards Another demanding par 4 which requires accuracy. Two bunkers in the centre of the fairway mean that leaving the ball short of them will keep you out of trouble. Whether
Left to right, the 12th, 7th and 8th holes
playing your second or third shot to the green, careful club choice is key. Care should also be taken when putting from above the pin on this sloping green.
long, short, left or right of the green is in danger of finding one of the seven bunkers protecting the pin.
Hole 8 (Target Hill) Par 4, 310 yards
A good straight drive down the fairway is sure to leave you in a good position to find the pin. A long shot over the hill might leave you the tough choice of either laying up just short of the bunkers, or risking it to try and make the green in two. Whether second, third or other shot to the pin, be warned that any shot over the green may well leave your ball out of bounds. Take great care.
There are plenty of slopes which could either aid or hinder your chances of hitting under par on this hole. Long hitters can find the green in one on this short par 4, but anything landing centre or right on the fairway has a chance of rolling right into one of the three waiting bunkers. Strategy rather than strength might be the best advice.
Hole 10 (Over the Hill) Par 5, 509 yards
Hole 9 (Wembley) Par 3, 161 yards From the tee you can see almost as much sand as closely cut grass! The tee shot, to what is a actually a relatively large green, requires accuracy; the ability to stop the ball dead where it lands is also very helpful. Any shot too far w w w.roya l crom ergol fclu b.com

Teeing off on the 11th hole
Hole-by-Hole Tour Continued Hole 11 (Long ‘Un) Par 5, 501 yards
Hole 13 (Windy Ridge) Par 3, 182 yards
This aptly named hole is protected by a range of bunkers strategically placed both on the fairway and greenside. Rough and gorse on the right-hand side must also be taken into consideration. Once the target is found, a relatively benign green – with subtle breaks – will give you a decent chance of a good score.
A deceptively tricky par 3 on which you are unable to see the green from the tee. The ball normally feeds towards the green from the left and hence this is a good line to take. The wind will have a big influence on your club selection and could cause it to range from a middle iron up to a driver. When you walk to the top you will find a relatively large green, often devoid of balls!
Hole 12 (The Plateau) Par 4, 285 yards This recently extended, but still short, par 4 catches out many golfers. While the tee shot may not be too taxing, the shot to the green demands great care. Short and the ball can run back to your feet; long and you may be in an unplayable lie in the shrubs. Club choice is key. It’s a hole where those who have played it before hold a distinct advantage.
The greens’ smoothness, trueness and speed are collectively among the best I have recorded. Alistair Beggs, agronomist to the Open Championship Committee

THE 15TH GREEN
Hole-by-Hole Tour Hole 14 (Lighthouse) Par 4, 399 yards Our signature hole. From the tee there is a 165 yard uphill carry in order to reach the fairway. There is a marker post for line but if you are likely to struggle with the carry, the green path to the right makes a better target. The fairway itself is lined with gorse to the left; whilst a slice right off the tee will see your ball fly over the cliff. Choose the club for your approach shot carefully because past the green is out of bounds. The lighthouse, as well as being a stunning piece of scenery, can be useful when reading the line of the drive.
28
w w w.roya l crom ergol fclu b.com
The 14th, Lighthouse, hole Hole 15 (Valley) Par 4, 391 yards This may not be the longest par 4 but it is certainly one of the most demanding. The tee shot must carry over more than 100 yards of gorse and, with additional gorse trees and heavy rough to the left of the bunker, as well as a bracken covered hill to the right, anything other than a straight drive will be punished. The second shot is uphill and must navigate various bunkers in order to reach the green, which slopes from back to front. Tough all round.
The 16th, with the 17th hole to the left
Hole 16 (Hog’s Back) Par 4, 317 yards A short hole but a blind drive onto this narrow fairway provides plenty of risk for long hitters attempting to reach the green in one. The green is a generous size and a 3-wood or long iron should leave you short on the approach with a simple second shot. This is the highest point on the course and the wind could have a crucial role to play. Playing a bump and run to the green may be a favoured strategy but under hit shots will peel off left or right.
Hole 17 (Kestrel View) Par 3, 119 yards This stunning par 3, with its short yardage, could be seen as a simple hole. However that is only the case if you manage to land on the green. Anything off the green could be in trouble. A carry, over gorse, is followed by deep bunkers, before the green is even reached. Steep slopes are found to the left, bushes to the right and, over the back of the
green, is a thick rough area. Beware, especially if the wind is ‘helping’ you … as it regularly is.
Hole 18 (Home View) Par 4, 381 yards The last drive of the day can be a tough one, especially if the wind is against you. It is 155 yards to reach the fairway, which slopes from right to left. Gorse and bracken envelope the right side of the fairway, whilst the left, especially near the green, is heavily bunkered. Mostly a straight drive is the only thing that will guarantee your safety. The large twotiered green demands an accurate second shot, not least when the pin is situated on the top tier with punitive rough lying just beyond.

Veterans The Veterans’ section, for over-55s, enables both male and female golfers to compete and socialise with others in the same age bracket. In addition to regular roll-ups, there is a busy schedule of both informal and competitive golf as well as numerous and popular social events. The Veterans also run a series of friendly matches, both home and away, against other clubs in the area. Royal Cromer has been very successful in the Barnard Cup, a county-wide knock-out for players over 55 years of age. All veterans are eligible to try out for the team.
Juniors In recent years, with great support from dedicated Club members and our Professional, the Juniors (Under-18) have become a noted presence in Norfolk Golf. In addition to golfing successes the Juniors, like other groups at the Club, blend competitive golf with fun competitions and a number of social events. New junior members are always made very welcome.
The country is rather flat but this remark does not apply to Cromer… it being entirely free from objectionable features. London City Press, 1886 w w w.roya l crom ergol fclu b.com

Members’ Golf Continued Social Golf For many years the Club has been hosting a monthly Social Golf event, usually on a Sunday. This runs throughout the year, with various formats of play, followed by a meal and prize giving. It offers a great chance to mix with players, of all standards, with whom members might not normally meet and is naturally an ideal place for new members to meet. A relatively new addition to the Club is the Wednesday late afternoon Turn Up and Go (TUGS) challenge, running from April to September. This comprises nine holes of golf with a variety of fun challenges, perfectly suited to those in full-time work or education. It welcomes golfers of all abilities. The TUGS team also arranges several social events throughout the year.
There are plenty of roll-ups, both large and small, in which any new member can play. These occur at different times throughout the week. The Professional Shop team will be happy to recommend one or other roll-up to new members.

VISITORS The north coast of Norfolk is one of the driest parts of the UK and, with onshore winds often keeping frost away, we are able to welcome visitors throughout the year. Tee times can be booked well ahead of your visit. Individual golfers may be asked to play with members but two, three and four-ball tees are available. Early mornings are reserved for members but an enquiry to the Pro Shop will tell you what tee times are available on any particular day. Play can be over 18, 27 or 36 holes. Full pricing details can be found on the website.
For your visit There is ample car parking and a well stocked Pro Shop. Pull carts, electric trolleys and buggies can be hired. For electric trolleys and buggies you are strongly advised to book ahead.
As you would expect, there are ample changing facilities with towels available free of charge. The Clubhouse is open from early to late but for the bar and catering you should check if you have an especially early or late start.
At the Club Most visitors will describe our club as relaxed and informal but we do ask that the expected courtesies are observed. There is no specific dress code for the Clubhouse but the normal rules apply for the course: proper golf wear, no jeans, trainers or tee-shirts. Telephones are allowed but we ask that calls are confined to the changing rooms and outdoor areas, and never on the course.

Societies We host a significant number of societies every year and would be delighted to hear from you. Call the manager or the Pro Shop with your enquiry and we can provide all the information you need. We don’t set handicap limits for playing but ask that all members are familiar with the etiquette and rules of golf. Please let us know if we can make your day special. We can arrange prizes, nearest-the-pin markers, even a starter. The caterers will be happy to discuss any meal requests. Photography can also be arranged. Please don’t hesitate to ask. We do have contacts with hotels in the area and can also recommend pubs, restaurants and even other golf courses you might want to try if you are thinking of a tour in the area.

Get Skin Savvy Brought to you by:
Regular skin checking will help you get to know your skin and catch anything early, making it easier to treat. Type of skin cancer: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) & squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) These are the most common forms of skin cancer, which arise within the top layer of the skin, appearing anywhere, but mostly on sun exposed sites. BCC: usually slow growing, a pinkish bump that can bleed and scab. SCC: usually quick growing, a thickened scaly, or red ulcerated bump that can be painful and bleed.
Melanoma This is less common, but much more dangerous. If left, the cells can grow deeper into the skin and travel to different areas of the body.
The ‘ABCDE’ Rule will help detect warning signs...

How to perform a skin check: Once a month, examine your skin in a well-lit area, noting all moles, marks and spots, charting the location, appearance, and dimensions of each. Taking pictures can be helpful, as can the help of ‘another’ for those ‘hardto-see’ places: 1.
Start with your front, back, left and right sides.
2. Bend elbows and check forearms, back of upper arms and palms. 3. Check backs of legs, feet, spaces between toes, soles of feet, and nails. 4. Examine back of neck, part hair to check scalp using a mirror or torch. 5. Carefully check your back and buttocks. If you spot anything new and/or changing, whether coloured or not, bleeding, crusty or itchy, contact your GP IMMEDIATELY.

The future Royal Cromer Golf Club has enjoyed a long and successful history… but it is a club that is very much looking to the future. A growth in membership, changes in governance and a rising status in course rankings are all reasons for our optimism.
Future plans ensure a union of that which was envisaged by the original designers and the requirements and expectations of the modern golfer.
Course developments
Championships
Golfers who have not visited Royal Cromer for a while will notice changes on the course. Apart from noticeable improvements in drainage there are new teeing areas on several holes and striking landscaping of large areas of rough. The greens are as good as they have ever been and a balanced shift from non-native to native vegetation ensures we have a course that blends superbly with the surrounding area.
Royal Cromer has always hosted significant championships at both county and national level. In recent years we have hosted the England Girls Open Amateur Championships at Under-14 and Under-16 levels. In 2022 we will be home to the PGA Assistants’ Championships. We are working hard with our partners to attract more competitions of this caliber for the future.
