Welcome

R

oyal North Devon at Westward Ho! can rightly claim to be the cradle of English golf. Founded in 1864, it is the oldest golf course in the country and is regarded as the St Andrews of England. The course is as tough as any of the UK’s better-known links, featuring in Golf Monthly’s Top 100 Course Rankings and also being selected in Golf World’s Top 100 courses in the world that every golfer “must play”.

Not only is Royal North Devon a great course, it is also a place of huge historical importance. Inside the warmly welcoming clubhouse, the golf museum, honours boards and the club’s top competition

trophies are worth a visit on their own and help to tell the story of the game and this remarkable club’s unique place in it. Many of the great players of the last 100 years were regular competitors at RND, including John Henry Taylor, who won five Open Championships. We are not, however, a club stuck in the past, and a round of golf here is as enjoyable as it has ever been. Our playing surfaces are second to none, boasting year-round fast and true greens, firm tees and tight fairway lies, which require crisply-struck iron shots. This is true golf played out under big skies against a backdrop of crashing surf. The welcome is warm and genuine. If you love links golf, you will surely want to return many times to experience golf as it should be played! www.royalnorthdevongolfclub.co.uk

Our Course & its History

W

indswept, wild and interesting, England’s Southwest counties of Somerset, Devon and Cornwall host the oldest and some of the most enigmatic golf courses in the UK. The club is renowned for its friendly atmosphere and rather than the stuffiness you might associate with such an old club, we pride ourselves on being open and progressive. Many golfers are amazed to discover how relaxed and informal the atmosphere is at RND and we like to think the “craic” in the clubhouse is just as important as a great day on the links. We are also proud to have introduced thousands of juniors to the game and have the facilities to encourage future generations.

6

www.royalnorthdevongolfclub.co.uk

The course stretches out to over 7,000 yards from the championship tees (used for the West of England Championship – one of the top amateur events in the calendar), although most will agree that it’s a suitably stiff test at 6,650 yards, especially when the wind blows. Even with today’s modern equipment a par score for the top scratch players is never easy, showing how the design of Old Tom Morris has stood the test of time. Our green-keeping staff pride themselves on producing a natural golf course with greens that will test your nerve and your touch to the limit. Like St Andrews a first sighting can be deceptive, many new arrivals look out from the clubhouse and ask where the golf course is!

The highlights of a round are numerous, but one is undoubtedly the par-4 6th. It is the toughest hole on the course, but is made truly memorable by amazing panoramic views of the coastline and offers one of the most breath-taking tee shots in golf. Then there is the Cape Bunker on the fourth hole, which was at one time the largest sand trap in the world. The drive over this expanse of sand and the huge bank behind is daunting indeed, though accomplish it and the reward could be birdie. And let’s not forget the sea rushes, a form of vegetation which really start to come into their own at the beginning of the inward nine. Standing on the 10th tee with no fairway in view and an expanse of these impenetrable plants in front of you will surely test your golfing mettle.

Above all, this is a great, natural golf course that is largely unchanged from the moment 100 years ago when Harold Hilton et al pronounced Westward Ho! to be England’s number one competition golf course. RND is pure raw exhilaration and ultimately, the experience of playing a fast running links in a stiff breeze still tests the very best in the game. One of the best players there ever was, John Henry Taylor, learnt his golf at Royal North Devon. Born in the village of Northam, overlooking the course, J.H. started his long association with the club as a caddie boy and he soon became an accomplished player.

A

s students of the game will know he went on win five Open Championships and to form one third of the great triumvirate alongside Harry Vardon and James Braid - who dominated the game for 30 years. The club honoured Taylor with the presidency in 1957 and his portrait and some of the clubs that he used to win his Open titles are proudly displayed in the clubhouse.

A look at the club’s honours boards, dating back to 1864, is like a “who’s who” of golfing greats.

It lists many of the game’s founding fathers such as Horace Hutchinson, Harold Hilton, Herbert Fowler and Capt Molesworth and although golf has changed hugely in the last century and continues to develop and grow, a great links will always stand the test of time. RND is just that, a great links and as far removed as possible from the manicured and manufactured championship courses we see every week on television.

The club is renowned for its friendly atmosphere. www.royalnorthdevongolfclub.co.uk

Tour the Course Hole 1 (The Burn) 478 yards, par 5 At first glance this hole looks like quite an easy start to the round. However any errant shots will be severely punished by the inescapable burns that criss-cross the hole and the wiry rough to the left of the hole known as FUG! A good tee shot should be aimed at the telegraph pole in the distance and the prevailing wind will bring it back to the centre of the fairway. For the long hitters the green is on in two but be aware that the ditch in front of the green is very much in play the further left you aim.

Hole 2 (Baggy) 416 yards, par 4 Regarded by the members as probably the hardest hole on the golf course the drive should be aimed just to the right of the white stone in the fairway.

There isn’t a lot of bail-out space for this tee shot so swing confidently. The second shot is to a very small upturned saucer of a green. It is a tough approach shot that plays longer than you think so take an extra club!

Hole 3 (Crest) 421 yards, par 4 You need to decide where to hit your drive on this tee. Shorter hitters should just aim straight at the bunkers between the two white stones. Longer hitters can clear these bunkers downwind leaving a simple approach, or alternatively hit wide of the traps depending on which side of the green the flag is located. The approach should err on the long side as all the trouble is at the front of the green.

www.royalnorthdevongolfclub.co.uk

11

Tour the Course Hole 4 (Cape) 349 yards, par 4 A very daunting tee shot over the massive Cape Bunker, though it is actually less than 200 yards to clear the trap, so aim at the 4 sign and let rip! There is a lot of room on this hole and downwind the green is driveable for the big hitters. The approach shot again should not be left short so play to the heart of the green.

Hole 5 (Table) 136 yards, par 3 A real cracker of a par 3, which is fairly short but very tricky. When played into the wind you can need up to four clubs more than usual! Once the ball gets above the green the wind can play havoc with it. There is no bail-out shot here so take a deep breath and trust your swing. There are a lot of very

12

www.royalnorthdevongolfclub.co.uk

deep, straight-faced bunkers guarding on all sides the fairly generous but sloping green.

Hole 6 (Alp) 406 yards, par 4 Do not be put off by the amazing panoramic views on this stroke index 1 hole. Downwind all the bunkers come into play off the tee, the ones on the left for the short hitters, and the cross fairway bunkers for the bigger hitters. You can’t get to the green out of any of these bunkers so the tee shot should be played down the right side of the fairway, but beware the rushes too far right! The second shot should be played to the left side of the green to avoid the big drop-off to the right. If you go too far left the bank next to the green will kick it back on to the putting surface.

Hole 7 (Lifeboat) 397 yards, par 4 A daunting hole for the unaccustomed but over the bunker on the right lies half of Devon to hit into. Left is dead with the great sea rushes ready to devour your ball, never to be seen again! The second shot once more needs to be played long, away from all the trouble at the front of the green. It is however important to position your ball on the same level as the flag because this green is treacherous.

Hole 8 (Bar) 192 yards, par 3 A testing long par 3, which is nearly always played into a cross wind. A fairly large putting surface is well guarded by bunkers left and right. Most players will have to land short and run the ball on to the green which is the best way to play the hole.

The great sea rushes are there to intimidate but don’t really come into play.

Hole 9 (Dell) 497 yards, par 5 There is plenty of room to the right so a long drive down the right side is the order of the day. Big hitters can get there in two however a deep trap awaits anything left short. Anyone laying up needs to know their distances as the green isn’t very deep and has a ridge down the middle from front to back. Being on or around this green doesn’t guarantee an easy two-putt!

www.royalnorthdevongolfclub.co.uk

13

Tour the Course

14

Hole 10 (Rush) 373 yards, par 4

Hole 11 (Appledore) 371 yards, par 4

On the tee you are greeted by the sight of great sea rushes everywhere and will have to trust us that there is a fairway out there! Aim your drive at the marker post or bail out short right if you don’t hit the ball that far. Hitting the fairway is very rewarding but don’t rest on your laurels as an accurate approach is required to a green with bunkers front and left. Again, err on the long side with your second shot.

Another intimidating tee shot with rushes left and right. The fairway is actually fairly wide but has many moguls the further down you go, leading to some sloping lies. Aim at the marker post with the tee shot and you will have no problems. The bigger hitters can go a little left of the marker post as the fairway widens out on the left side after about 220 yards. The second shot is played over bunkers guarding the front of the green so you need to know your yardages for the approach.

www.royalnorthdevongolfclub.co.uk

Hole 12 (Trap) 423 yards, par 4

Hole 13 (Lundy) 442 yards, par 4/5

Like the 9th hole there is the chance to open your shoulders and let rip here. But again favour the right side of the hole, as there is acres of room. However you need to avoid Fowler’s Bunker that lurks about 200 yards off the tee on the right side. The second shot is straightforward but with the fast running green sloping from front to back you must have good distance control.

A very short par 5 off the white or ladies’ tees that when standing on the tee you may feel will offer up an easy birdie. However after a well-struck tee-shot down the left side of the fairway, you start to see the difficulty of the hole. Probably the smallest green on the course sits about four feet above the fairway and slopes off at all sides, making the second shot almost impossible to keep on the green unless hit perfectly. When you have missed this green, the chip on should be a low running shot that climbs up the steep slope surrounding the putting surface.

www.royalnorthdevongolfclub.co.uk

15

Tour the Course Hole 14 (Iron Hut) 201 yards, par 3

Hole 16 (Punch Bowl) 143 yards, par 3

A great par three, with a ridge running down the right half of the green, from front to back. Again, well guarded by bunkers either lay up short and chip on or try to land the ball just short of the green and allow it to run up into the middle of the putting surface.

A slightly raised green slopes off on all sides with deep bunkers ready to catch any wide tee shots. Middle of the green is always a good shot but you need to beware of the subtle undulations when putting.

Hole 15 (Church) 439 yards, par 4 Another good hole for those who like to let rip with the driver. Aim down the left side of the fairway to avoid the bear pit on the right. A semi-blind second shot should be played to the centre of the green, dissecting the bunkers guarding the left and right sides.

16

www.royalnorthdevongolfclub.co.uk

Hole 17 (Road) 555 yards, par 5

Hole 18 (Home) 414 yards, par 4

A long tee shot is essential to help with the positioning of the lay-up with the second shot. The lay-up should be played down the left-hand side of the hole to leave a shorter and easier pitch shot to the green. The third shot is played over the road and ditch to a green that sits facing you but then runs off to a lower tier at the back. Any pushed or pulled approaches will be gathered up by the bunkers either side.

The tee shot should be aimed down the left side to avoid the burn that separates the 1st and 18th fairways. The second shot is then played to a twotiered green guarded at the front by the burn you hit over from the first tee. If you feel that you may struggle to clear the burn the percentage play is to lay up and pitch on.

Practice Facilities

W

ouldn’t it be nice to be able to play to the best of your ability in order to enjoy the Championship golf course at Royal North Devon to the full? Fortunately we have superb practice facilities available to members looking to work on their game. Several years ago we opened the Pimpley Ground short course, a nine-hole par-3 course which is the perfect place to sharpen up all areas of the short game. Play the Pimpley well on a regular basis and you will quickly see your score and handicap tumble.

For those golfers arriving at the course with only a few minutes to spare before their round, there is a large practice putting green outside the clubhouse to help you gain familiarity with the pace of the greens and a practice chipping green and practice bunkers down near the first tee. The long game is not overlooked and the large practice ground offers the chance to work on your woods and long irons. As hard as it may be to believe, occasionally the weather does turn nasty even in this idyllic spot and on those occasions our regulars head for the two indoor nets, which are a godsend if it is blowing a gale outside.

Caddies

R

oyal North Devon is proud to welcome golfers coming from around the world who make the pilgrimage to our links with the aim of seeing where some of the earliest golfing greats learnt their game before enjoying the experience for themselves.

Playing England’s oldest course, you get the feeling that here is something really special and a rare opportunity to play golf in a manner and a setting that the inventors of our magnificent sport intended. If this is your first trip to RND, why not make the most of it by employing the services of a caddy from the expert team of Graham Winter, our Caddy Master.

Remember, JH Taylor, the five-times Open Champion, started his life here as a caddy, occasionally caddying for Horace Hutchinson, an esteemed golf writer who also learned to play golf over RND’s famous links. If you have not been here before it is sometimes difficult to know which line to pick or which shot to hit, but a caddie can take all the guesswork out of your round. Nowhere will this be more beneficial than the start of the inward nine – the famous (or infamous) sea rush holes which can be a real round-wrecker for the unwary. We have a number of good caddies who are all playing members and “locals” who can give you details of the history of the club as well as any information on nearby courses and the area. They will also be delighted to show you around the wonderful museum at RND as part of your visit. For more details, email: info@rndgc.co.uk www.royalnorthdevongolfclub.co.uk

Member’s Golf - Men

T

he Men play in the North Devon League, a small league of local clubs which is split into two divisions. Competition day for the men is Saturday and this incredibly keen section are never at a loss for opponents to test themselves against or silverware to compete for. Many of the cups on offer date back at least several decades, with one of the most prestigious being the Kashmir Cup, a 36-hole medal event held at the end of August played off scratch. Like many of the events held at Royal North Devon, this competition is an open event and therefore golfers from other clubs are permitted to enter. While the Kashmir Cup dates back to the 1920s, the Club Silver

Medal held the preceding Friday was first contested in 1864. This really is the club’s premier event and is open to members of RND only. The Bideford Bay Foursomes is a two-day event held in early April which draws the biggest field of any Foursomes event in the whole of Europe, with more than 600 people competing every year. Hosted in conjunction with nearby Saunton Golf Club, competitors play 18 holes on one course on the Saturday, followed by 18 holes on the other course on the Sunday. Played as a Stableford format, the event dates back more than 50 years, with prizes for the best pair overall and the mixed pair with the most points. It is an amazing event, with the first group going out at 7am and every six or seven minutes thereafter without a break right up until the final group tees off at around 4pm. www.royalnorthdevongolfclub.co.uk

Coaching for Juniors

T

he PGA Professionals at the club work actively with the Junior members providing coaching sessions on Saturdays and Sundays with the aim of introducing them to the game and building their confidence. All abilities are catered for and those who show a real aptitude can be developed up to county level.

Two coaching sessions take place on Saturday mornings for an hour from 9am-10am and 10am11am and again on Sundays from 10am-11am and 11am-12pm. Sundays is the chance for our really young golfers to shine, and it is a thrill to see juniors as young as six pick up a club for the first time, the first step in what we hope will be a lifetime’s commitment to the game. The cost of these sessions is just £2 per child. The Professionals also work actively with the council and the local schools to introduce golf to the wider regional community while the club, with the help of the Golf Foundation’s initiatives, aims to maximise the achievements of the Juniors by allowing them to participate in challenges that test them in all areas of the game.

Coaching for Juniors A nine-hole Par 3 course fondly known as the Pimpley Ground was opened in 2005 with the aim of encouraging juniors to play and enjoy golf whilst focussing on their short games and developing touch and feel. It has proved to be incredibly popular and is one of the reasons why our juniors have competed with such success against their peers from other clubs across the county.

Maximise their achievements by allowing them to participate in challenges that test them in all areas of the game.

Visitors and Societies

W

e are proud to welcome visitors and societies to our club, many of whom are intrigued by the possibility of walking down the same fairways that were once frequented by some of the game’s early golfing greats. But having been drawn to us by the history of the place, visitors are then enthralled by the opportunity to take on a golfing challenge which comes around all too rarely. This is links golf at its finest on a course which is always kept in outstanding shape by our expert green-keeping team.

We like to be as flexible as we can, so rather than offering set packages to societies, we ask organisers to contact us with their specific golfing and culinary needs. Opt to play 18 or 36 holes, enjoy breakfast on arrival, soup and sandwiches, a ploughman’s lunch or a three-course meal. Whatever your group’s preference we will do our very best to accommodate. Your satisfaction is our aim and it is something we often achieve, judging by the favourable comments we receive and the number of golfers who come back to visit us time and again.

Come and bring a society to experience the thrill of playing the game of golf like its inventors intended.

Clubhouse and Restaurant

T

he clubhouse at Royal North Devon is the perfect place to relax for golfers, visitors and societies who can enjoy a quiet drink, tasty snack or more elaborate catering. For students of the game, the clubhouse is worth a visit in its own right. Dating back to the late 19th century, it was actually opened in 1888. Our clubhouse is a charming old wooden structure, full of character and steeped in history. The changing facilities however, you will be pleased to hear, are modern, spacious and comfortable. There is a single large bar which can accommodate up to 200 people for big occasions. It is well stocked

with a wide range of wines, beers, spirits and nonalcoholic beverages, so pick a spot to sit and unwind. Why not chat with the extremely friendly membership here at RND, or alternatively, why not take a journey back in time? There are not many clubs around the world that boast a museum within their walls. Royal North Devon is proud of its heritage and has on display a club which former caddie, playing member and president JH Taylor used to win one of his five Open Championship titles. One look at the honours boards and you feel you are entering a bygone age and some of the names on show will be well known to students of the game the world over. Our museum has recently been refurbished and will fascinate those interested in the history of the game.

Food is available from relatively early in the morning and there are plenty of options to choose from. Visitors can enjoy a tasty and filling snack in the bar or dine in style with a sit-down three-course meal in the restaurant. The restaurant can hold around 130 people and offers a wide choice with a set menu and daily specials board.

The perfect place to relax for golfers, visitors and societies who can enjoy a quiet drink, and tasty snack.

Weddings and Functions

R

oyal North Devon Golf Club is the perfect venue for wedding receptions and functions. There is a cosy and relaxed atmosphere in the clubhouse, perfectly complemented by the tastefully refurbished restaurant where guests can dine in modern comfort.

Then there is the course, the coast and the Atlantic Ocean to act as a spectacular natural backdrop to what should be some splendid wedding photographs. As with so much as Royal North Devon, our watchword is flexibility. We much prefer you to 46

www.royalnorthdevongolfclub.co.uk

approach us with your ideas for what exactly would make a perfect day for you and we will do our utmost to ensure that that dream is turned into reality. Be advised, though, that because of our busy golfing calendar there are not a great many dates available throughout the year to enable us to host wedding parties. Just as importantly - to us and to you – we go for quality over quantity, so the number of receptions may be moderate, but the day will be as it should be – one you will remember for all the right reasons for the rest of your life. If this appeals to you, then it is most advisable to book well in advance to avoid disappointment. Devon truly is a delightful spot, and if you are unfamiliar with our county you could not wish to pick a better place as a honeymoon destination.

Our facilities also lend themselves to hire for functions, from rugby and football club dinners to Rotary Club functions and from birthday parties to wakes. Our excellent catering team ensures that your guests will leave satisfied.

Call 01237 473817 and speak to our General Manager Mark Evans about your needs.
