About the Course
Y
ou will not find a fairer test of your golfing skills than our 18hole, Par 70 heathland course.
Measuring 5,976 yards, Royston golf course is per shot as long on average as most Par 72s. Featuring two par threes over 220 yards, a couple of driveable par fours and with no two holes alike thanks to the natural contours, it will never cease to delight the enthusiastic golfer. Situated high on fast-draining chalk-based heathland, the course is playable all year round and, due to its position, your round will be enhanced thanks to the spectacular views overlooking Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire. Over a century old, this course features firm, fast fairways and with the varying wind conditions, your results will be different every time you step on the course. The hardest hole on the course is the fourth, nicknamed Long Barrow. At 440 yards, it’s a par four that requires a long drive to the left-hand side of the fairway, setting up an approach shot to a well-sculpted green. However, the most picturesque hole on the course is the 220-yard tenth. Playing down a valley, you could get side tracked by the beautiful views on offer at Church Hill but make sure you hit towards the left-hand side and a par opportunity should await. We think you’ll agree with us that this has to be one of the best-kept secrets in East Anglia, and one thing is for sure - we know you will be back.

Open Competitions
R
oyston Golf Club is an historic golf club with a rich heritage dating back to the founding of our club in 1892. We know we have something special here, and nothing gives us greater pleasure than to share the enjoyment of our magnificent course with people who may not have experienced it before. One of the ways in which we can do this is by staging a number of open competitions spread throughout the season aimed at golfers from all walks of life and all abilities.
www.roystongolfclub.co.uk
The season usually kicks off in early May with the Junior Open, an 18-hole stableford which is also a Daily Telegraph Qualifier for those under 16.
The final open of the summer held at the club is the Senior Open, which is an 18-hole stableford that takes place at the start of September with an age limit of 55 or older.
The event always draws a sizeable audience and, with the Royston Challenge Trophy presented to the overall winner, there is much to be played for. Sir Nick Faldo is a previous winner in 1975.
Following the event, there is a three-course meal where the only thing on offer is renewing friendships and perhaps a drink in the bar afterwards for the winner.
This June and July, we are re-introducing two pairs competitions, the Mixed Open and Ladies Open, offering a wider range of play to our golfing audience.
You will find details of upcoming events on our website, www.roystongolfclub.co.uk, together with information about how you can reserve your place.

S
ocieties can expect an enjoyable day out at Royston Golf Club. We are a popular venue all year round and see groups returning year after year.
We welcome societies on almost any day throughout the year and can cater for small or large groups and offer a wide range of golf packages from 18 holes of golf. Choose from an individually priced menu, containing a number of choices depending on the time of day you wish to play.
www.roystongolfclub.co.uk
With our initial package, you can have coffee with either a steak and ale pie or a bacon roll, while the larger package offers a round of golf with breakfast before and a light lunch after. We would recommend the choice of the fullday package to see why our kitchen has such an enviable reputation.
Prices are very reasonable and highly competitive, and we guarantee you and your group a day to remember. For more information on booking a society day, please contact us on 01763 242696.
The Pro Shop provides a comprehensive range of equipment as well as being able to arrange golf lessons, group golfing clinics and prizes. We can organise Longest Drive and Nearest the Pin markers should you wish or, for that very special round, why not try using our Results Board.

Course Tour
I
f you have never played at Royston Golf Club you are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the pitfalls that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our hole-by-hole tour.
14 | 2015
Hole 1 (Dunedin) 478 yards - Par 5 A fine, uphill par five with a right-to-left slope on the fairway. An interesting first hole that introduces you to some of the features that makes Royston Golf Course such a delight to play. This is an uphill stroll that finishes with straddling a shallow gulley on the approach to the green. And, from the first green, you enjoy one of the finest views that the county’s golf courses have to offer.
Hole 2 (The Mounds) 321 yards - Par 4 The first dogleg hole on the course, made especially lovely by views of woodland to your left and a vista across the course to your right. Find the fairway and your approach will not be a long one. Get your approach to the top level as this will leave a nearly flat putt to the hole. Hole 3 (Astill’s Drive) 364 yards - Par 4 There is a gentle slope down to a plateau green, guarded from the front by a ring of classic pothole bunkers. Catch a glimpse of Cambridge in the distance, and on the flying days you’ll see vintage aircraft along the valley at Duxford.

Hole 6
Hole 8
Hole 4 (Long Barrow) 440 yards - Par 4 A majestic, sweeping fairway takes a gentle curve towards the fourth green. Here you will probably catch your first glimpse of skylarks, and in summer the clover is alive with butterflies any nature-loving golfer will relish.
Hole 7 (Beverley’s Height) 301 yards - Par 4 Playing along the hilltop with woodlands flanking the hole, this is a real delight of a par four. And here you’ll probably catch your first glimpse of the red kites and other birds of prey that live in the woodland to the side.
Hole 5 (Shepherd’s Rest) 179 yards - Par 3 A short, wooded walk approaches the fifth tee. This par three is one of Royston Golf Club’s signature holes with a broad gulley in front of a beautiful green. A truly inspiring par three.
Hole 8 (Rand’s Folly) 365 yards - Par 4 Beginning with a tee-off next to a lovely woodland, this par four takes you along an undulating fairway with a slight right-to-left slope and ending with a large plateau green.
Hole 6 (Windhover) 147 yards - Par 3 A delightful raised tee and a hole that takes you straight along the short but steep-sided valley to an oval green with a deceptive little slope.
www.roystongolfclub.co.uk
Hole 10
Hole 9 (Round the Corner) 505 yards - Par 5 A majestic hole which wraps up the true character of Royston Golf Course in one. A drive over the brow of the hill, a broad gulley to cross, a dogleg to the left and an undulating approach to the green make this a fascinating hole. A par five to thrill, especially on a windy day. Hole 10 (Church Hill) 220 yards - Par 3 One of Royston Golf Course’s hidden gems. This valley hole has a raised tee and a gentle slope down to a green flanked by wonderful farmland to the rear. At the right time of the year this is where you will most likely get your first glimpse of the rare pulsatillas, as well as a host of other wild flowers that thrive in these downland conditions.

Course Tour Hole 11 (King’s Ride) 346 yards - Par 4 A magnificent high-tee position with views beyond the beautifully bunkered 11th green to an area where Royston’s race horses can often be seen exercising. Hole 12 (Eastward Ho) 236 yards - Par 3 This is the beginning of the homeward stretch. A neat par three with a gently sloping fairway and a gradual run on to a circular green. A par three to gladden your heart.

Hole 13 (The Colonel) 346 yards - Par 4 A long, broad fairway leads up the slope to a raised green. Often views to the right of grazing sheep, which keep the outreaches of the course in tip-top condition. A stretching par-four hole.
Hole 15 (The Island) 372 yards - Par 4 This brilliant tee position creates an opportunity for impressive drives onto the fairway at the bottom of the slope. The green is closely guarded by five bunkers, and its changing levels add to the delight of this hole.
Hole 14 (High Point) 352 yards - Par 4 A glorious, undulating fairway, with a slight right-to-left slope, plus heathland to the left and views across the golf course to the right. This hole finishes with an impressive green and a variety of levels.

Course Nature
T
he heathland at Royston Golf Club is filled with the wonders of nature and can be enjoyed throughout your whole round of golf. On a clear day, especially in spring, what sound is better than a chorus of skylarks high above, seemingly oblivious to your presence? The graceful red kite can be spotted from any hole, along with the broader-winged buzzard drifting on the air currents. The kestral is a common sight, particularly around the 6th hole, which bears its country name of Windhover.
www.roystongolfclub.co.uk
At certain times throughout the summer you may be lucky enough to witness mass hatchings of butterflies, including marbled whites and chalkhill blues; an increasingly rare sight in this part of the country.
Visit Royston Golf Club and know that even a terrible golf shot into the rough could be rewarded with an interesting wildlife sighting.
The heath has many rare flowers, with the pasque or pulsatilla orchid being the great attraction, and this purple and yellow beauty is the emblem of our senior section. You will often witness photographers in various contorted positions to the left of the 10th tee, trying to capture this flower in its early summer splendour.

Club Members Golf
M
embers at Royston Golf Club enjoy a full programme of golf throughout the year, with fixtures against local clubs, together with competitions to be enjoyed along with fellow members, some for silverware and some of a more social nature. There is always something to suit your handicap, age and golfing desire and at Royston Golf Club you will certainly not be short of playing opportunities.
Gentlemen The men’s section at Royston Golf Club is one of the friendliest around, and many members have a keen interest in competitive golf. Regular weekly competitions are held between members, with the men’s section meeting up most weekends. However, the most competitive matches take place in the Hertfordshire Golf Union Scratch League where the men play a number of home-andaway matches throughout the season. If you enjoy après-golf, there will always be a place for you at the bar. We participate in a number of regular friendly matches against local clubs, making sure that the thirst for competitive golf is also met.
36 | 2015
Although being competitive is important to maintain a handicap, a balance of all good things are required, which is why we provide regular social and mixed golf where the chance to grow friendships is always on the cards. Ladies The ladies’ section at Royston Golf Club has a full range of playing abilities, catering for all standards of golfers. The ladies’ golfing calendar is filled with regular matches and competition golf, and we have experienced success with our ladies’ side entering into the annual Cambs and Hunts Ladies’ County Golf Association’s Jean Wilkinson Trophy.
www.roystongolfclub.co.uk
We also ran a successful 2014 ‘Get Into Golf’ campaign, which recruited 16 new lady members, who have enjoyed getting to grips with golf and making new friends. Although ladies also play seven days a week, Tuesday and Thursday mornings are often the most popular days for roll-up golfers; however, with ample opportunities for social golf, whatever path you choose, ladies will always be warmly welcomed, making Royston Golf Club the ideal place to play. Juniors We recognise the importance of building an affluent junior section which is welcoming, fun, safe and encouraging.
www.roystongolfclub.co.uk
The junior section organises regular medal matches and stablefords, while we also enter a team into the Ver Junior League, in which we play home-and-away matches against local clubs, with the champions being decided at the Grand Final in November. Annually, we hold a Junior Open, won by Sir Nick Faldo in 1975, allowing members and participants from surrounding clubs to take part in this special event. Seniors The seniors are a thriving part of Royston Golf Club, meeting every week for either fun competitions or competitive golf.
The seniors’ golfing calendar is filled with regular matches, where the chance to socialise and catch up with old friends is as eagerly anticipated as the opportunity to play golf itself. The weekly roll-ups are normally held on Fridays, and there is also the opportunity to enter the Senior Open in September. The club’s senior section is truly one of the strongest in the area, and this is celebrated at the annual prize-giving event in October, but don’t be put off as there are plenty of opportunities to get involved with social events throughout the year as well.

Custom Fitting
T
here has been a growing realisation in recent times that golfing tuition ought to go hand-in-hand with equipment that allows each player to make the absolute utmost of whatever level of natural talent they possess. Clubs merely bought off the shelf will be of a standard specification but unfortunately golfers are not, coming in all shapes and sizes. The reality is that a golfer could have a perfectly acceptable technique but still be held back because their clubs are not entirely suitable to their swing. This is where custom fitting comes in; a relatively new phenomenon that allows a set of clubs to be built to marry with each golfer’s individual physique and swing characteristics. Custom fitting is something that we take seriously here at Royston Golf Club, and we pride ourselves in what we do. Head Professional Ryan Wingate offers a full and extensive range of products, all available for custom fitting. This service costs less than you may think and can bring about a dramatic improvement in ball striking. Even the top touring professionals struggle to maintain the same fundamentally sound swing characteristics every time, so it is a lot to ask for the average golfer to do likewise. Customising the clubs to position the golfer in the ideal position for their physical characteristics will train the golfer to address the ball with the correct posture and swing along the ideal swing plane, which all adds up to the correct impact position and better scores.

Practice Facilities
O
ne of the often-overlooked criteria when choosing a golf club to belong to is the standard of its practice facilities.
While the course is of paramount importance, the game of golf is a never ending, sometimes frustrating, pursuit of excellence, and the only way to improve is by spending time working on areas of our game that do not meet one’s hopes or expectations. Royston Golf Club’s practice facilities are open to anyone who has paid a green fee or is a full member. For those wishing to work on their shortgame outcomes, there is a large putting green designed with careful consideration to replicate the greens on the Heath. A pitching area and practice bunker are available for golfers looking to improve their round-saving strokes. For golfers who find time is at a premium, there are two practice nets that provide the opportunity to loosen up before play. Royston Golf Club is in a unique position to boast about having two main practice areas for the long game: the first is long and narrow, giving golfers an opportunity to open the shoulders and improve their driving; the second is shorter but also wider, allowing more creative practice. For more information, please call Ryan and his team at the Pro Shop on 01763 243476.

History
G
olf on Therfield Heath first came into being in 1869 when two Cambridge Undergraduates thought this would be an excellent position for a golf links that could be used by fellow students.
These two gentlemen were Lord Dunedin and George Gosset, both very keen golfers who came over with a bag of clubs each and set about arranging their golf course by establishing the holes by position and distance according to their striking of golf balls.
46 | 2015
A simple but effective basis, which was helped by the fact that the heathland was all closecropped grass. This course unfortunately only lasted about two years when in 1871 it was felt that Royston was too far from Cambridge. However, in 1890 the idea of a golf course on the Heath came to the fore again. This time it was with the encouragement of the Conservators and the help of two gentlemen from the now-formed Cambridge University Golf Club.
The course that was designed followed much of the original eighteen holes set out in 1869. This was the prelude to the establishment of Royston Golf Club on the 1st May 1892. Accolades for the course began as far back as 1892 when The Golfing Annual wrote: “A new course of eighteen holes has recently been laid out on the Heath at Royston (Herts), which in the opinion of many well-known players, will make one of the finest inland Golf grounds in the Eastern Counties. The Heath is about fifteen minutes’ walk from the station, two and half miles long, and about half a mile broad,

comprising upwards of 450 acres, from 213 feet above the sea level, with natural bunkers, good greens and owing to the peculiarity of the heath land, play can be kept up all year round”.
Club is at the forefront of Heath management, for the benefit of all. A significant part of the Club’s involvement is the preservation of the natural features of the Heath for the public good.
Although there have been several changes to the course in the last thirty years, mainly to increase the length and avoid playing over a road, every effort has been made to preserve its character.
Therfield Heath is well known for its flora, especially the wild orchids. In the early spring the south-facing side of the Church Hill is covered with the purple anemone pulsatilla, or pasque flower, which according to folklore only grew where Danish blood had been spilled. This is the largest colony of wild pulsatilla in Europe.
The course lies within an SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest). Working with Natural England and the Conservators, Royston Golf

Royston town itself is steeped in history, after growing up around the crossing of two ancient highways. In Norman times, a lady called Roisia marked this famous crossroads with a wayside cross erected on a stone base. This became the site of a settlement known as ‘Roisia’s Cross’ where the carefully preserved stone base can still be seen today. The derivation, it is believed, of the name ‘Royston’.
