Welcome
Welcome to the Royal Southampton Yacht Club
W
e welcome all Members to the exciting new 2015 season of activities on and off the water! On the Water is your annual reference book for Racing, Cruising and Training schedules, so we suggest you keep it somewhere handy. It also contains your convenient centre section pull-out Social Calendar and Tide Tables. Have a great season! If you are not already enjoying the many benefits of being a Member of the Royal Southampton, is it perhaps time you were? However grand it may appear (we blame that sweeping outside staircase…) it is the warmest and friendliest club you could hope to join. And while it helps to enjoy sailing or boating - or even own your own craft - neither of these is a requirement. Many Members find the use of the beautiful Ocean Village Headquarters Clubhouse overlooking the marina, or the gloriously located Gins Clubhouse on the unspoilt Beaulieu river, both with their own active social programmes, quite enough without venturing out on the water. Is there a more perfect spot for a lazy lunch on a sunny day, or for a twilight drink, than beside the river at Gins? Or a better party venue than Ocean Village? But those who also enjoy the ‘on the water’ activities get even more for their Membership. And many of our ‘social’ Members find they get drawn onto the water eventually… In common with other Royal Yacht Clubs, Royal Southampton takes pride in its history and standards. But today’s RSYC is modern, dynamic and active. We are completely Member led and governed, with committed enthusiasts voluntarily sharing their expertise and giving their time to ensure we maintain and develop our most popular activities, while continuously innovating and exploring new directions. The more Members we attract, the more we can offer to everyone, while keeping fees down. www.rsyc.org.uk

Welcome Extensive racing activities (see pgs 31 to 43) span everything from Sunday mornings ‘round the cans’ in Southampton Water and the Solent to jointly running the first few days of the Cowes Regatta. Additionally our Cruiser Group - comprising both sail and power - makes ambitious passages to distant destinations while also ensuring, through its active annual programme, that no charming rally venue or reciprocal yacht club in the Solent is left unexplored. (see pgs 17 to 29) Our latest development is the expansion of the fleet of dinghies at the Gins Clubhouse in Beaulieu, enabling adults as well as cadets to get out onto this beautiful river (p47). And another recent innovation is the formation of a Remote Controlled Yacht section, which has a well supported programme of racing on Thursday evenings, plus year round activities. (p45) With our impressive and convenient city centre location, the Ocean Village HQ is inevitably popular with business people for informal and formal meetings and business breakfasts and lunches. With this in mind we have created an Affiliate Membership for businesses providing access to our facilities, with the Members’ discount, during the working week. (p11) Our venues are also in demand for private functions and we are delighted to announce that we have recently obtained a licence for Weddings and Civil Partnerships to be conducted in a choice of two of our function rooms. Other events can also be arranged by our professional event organisers - from team building days which take advantage of our waterside location to corporate or private celebrations. (See pgs 11 to 15) The Club goes back a long way, to well before 1875, which was when it was awarded its Royal Warrant, and when its magnificent purpose-built premises in Southampton’s Above Bar were commissioned. Following WW2 the Club moved to a site adjacent to the Hampshire Cricket Ground in Southampton. Part of the proceeds from the sale of its city centre property were reserved to ensure this inland base was balanced by a second, waterside, one. Last year was the 50th anniversary of the inspired purchase of the land at Gins and the construction of this second Clubhouse. This year however marks the 27th Anniversary of the Ocean Village Headquarters of the Club, opened by our Admiral, HRH Prince Michael of Kent in 1988. This brought RSYC’s HQ back to the water, making us since then the only Royal Club with two Clubhouses on the Solent. Would you like to know more about the history or the sailing or social activities of the Club? Have a look at our website at www.rsyc.org.uk We have been working hard to streamline our Membership offer to make it as straightforward as possible to share in the fun that is RSYC in 2015. Our year begins as always with our three frostbite rallies. These rallies are always planned so that the hardier souls whose boats are still afloat can come by water but by restricting the destinations to the mainland all may attend whatever the weather. These gatherings are an excellent opportunity to discuss the summer plans for the individual yachts or for newer Members to meet and join in. Could be an icebreaker in more ways than one! Marchwood YC is based in the old RN magazine on the river Test. This charming destination is easier to find on the water than by road. Our second rally takes advantage of the annual reopening of Gins. An ideal opportunity to support our own Club. Our river Hamble destination this year is one of our reciprocal clubs, the RAF YC. Originally based at Calshot for Members of the RAF it moved to the Hamble in the 50s and now opens its doors to all. 18

Easter is a movable feast in more ways than one. We begin on Friday at East Cowes marina with our Safari supper; this is an excellent chance to make new friends or renew old acquaintances. Saturday takes us to Lymington and dinner at the Lymington Town Sailing Club. Waiting for the tide to carry you west gives a leisurely start to the day, or a short passage keeping inshore to cheat the tide offers a lunchtime stop off at Newtown Creek, the choice is yours. Sunday morning we carry the flood to the Royal Southampton at Gins for the carvery lunch followed by an afternoon of fun and games for the cadets.

It is always a pleasure to visit our reciprocal clubs so our trip to Yarmouth takes us to the Royal Solent Yacht Club for dinner on Friday evening. This is the prequel to our bank holiday onward trip to Poole.

The longer Bank Holiday weekends offer the chance for families still working to venture further afield without eating into their holiday allowance; the downside is these fixed holidays restrict the choice of tides. Going west and returning always presents problems with the tide so although the times may not suit the going they are better for the return. Poole is the chosen destination and with the long weekend the intention is to take full advantage of the quays, pontoons and anchorages available to us. 20

The Baltic Cruise is for those who have a bit more time and fancy a trip to the East Coast of Sweden particularly to the Stockholm archipelago, join Northern Spirit on the cruise to the Baltic. The intention is to leave early May, hopefully without Easterly winds and cruise along the N German and Polish coasts and across to Sweden. The weather is meant to be better in the Eastern Baltic than further West. The sail to The Kiel Canal can be done as a day sail. Our jaunt across the Channel to St Vaast takes advantage of the Bank Holiday to allow those with restricted time to join us for the weekend. For those with more leisure time and the desire to be in St Vaast for its Saturday market, then the option is depart earlier. For those with even more free time the “Beyond is entirely decided after the weekend, the only target is to be back at Gins for the annual Hog roast. The Hog Roast is open to all, our only request is that you book at least one week before since the size of the Hog is determined by the number of diners! The Hog is usually served with its crackling and apple sauce, accompanied by a selection of salads followed by dessert. Join Ke Mari on a 10 day cruise to the West Country in May. The days are long and the area is not usually too busy making it easy to find space in Marinas and harbours.

Destination Keyhaven
HW Portsmouth 1141
Height 1.9
Whilst most of our rallies take us to destinations with pontoons, water and power it is nice to get back to our roots and practise some of the skills of self-sufficiency that attracted us to yachting in the first place. The ISC Round the Island Race this year, because of the tides, is back to late June so the plan is to sail down the Western Solent on Friday, anchor, and either BBQ or visit Keyhaven Sailing Club, and then watch the fleet go past early Saturday morning before moving to Lymington or Yarmouth.

Our Bank holiday visit to Island Harbour offers the opportunity of a final long weekend before the end of school holidays. Like sailing, BBQs are always weather dependent, so the timing can always be adjusted to suit the conditions. To help us out the Marina book out the BBQs for the whole weekend so we can choose to use them just once or - for the al fresco gourmet - as often as you would like. The Bournemouth Air Show, now in its ninth year, has become a popular attraction for our Members. Anchoring off the Pier to watch the aerial display and then on to Studland Bay for the night proved to be a successful format which we wish to include in our programme. The Bembridge rally offers a chance to enjoy a site of special scientific interest (SSSI). The Duver was once a nine hole golf course but now is the home of our blackberry hunt (hence the September date) and our boules tournament and kite flying. It is another ‘Must Visit’ destination for all seafood lovers.

Yes it is a race, but it is also a rally, so it appears in the race listing and also in the Cruisers’ section. You can race or cruise to Yarmouth, the choice is yours, but the reason for going is a club dinner followed by an auction and a raffle. All of the money raised goes to the RNLI. So we have a great time whilst supporting a good cause.
Technical Challenges; Anchoring and Pilotage Date 21st Nov
Destination Newtown Creek
HW Portsmouth 1913
Height 4.2
The Newtown event is intentionally held out of high season on a date which, having taken the ebb tide from Southampton Water, enables us to take the flood tide by dinghy to Shalfleet quay and walk the mile or so to the New Inn for dinner. We normally moor our yachts to the visitors’ buoys in Newtown Creek or anchor in Clamerkin Lake. Having regard to the time of low water on the 21st November, many of our Members will be on the moorings by early afternoon and may then take the circular walk (about an hour) from the landing stage. We should then set off in our dinghies (with torch) at about 1800hrs. giving us time to enjoy our meal before the next ebb demands our return by dinghy to our moorings where we may gather for coffee or something stronger www.rsyc.org.uk

Racing
W
elcome to another great year of non-stop fully crewed and double handed racing with one of the most active clubs in the Solent area.
As part of our continuous development of RSYC racing, we are building on the successful innovations introduced in recent years.
Fully Crewed: • Our Doyle Sails Frostbite Series is the only Solent Series that starts in January and runs on alternate Sunday mornings through to March - It’s great racing and a great way to keep in shape and prepare for the 2015 season. • Our popular Thursday evening summer racing will once again comprise the Twilight Series (six races, May-June) and the Evening Series (six races, July-August). • The annual Commodore’s Charity Pursuit race will this year be run in November instead of December. • Some Fully Crewed races will once again also be open to doubled handed and/or white sail boats that wish to compete. Double Handed: • 2015 will be the 35th Anniversary year of the country’s most popular double handed race series! • Last year’s expansion of this Series from eight to twelve races proved a hugely popular success. We continue with the same format in 2015: The Inshore, Alongshore and Offshore sub-Series will each comprise four races with one discard. There are five discards in the Main Series of twelve races. • IRC NATIONAL DOUBLE HANDED CHAMPIONSHIPS: Having organised the first ever of these events in 2014, we have been invited to run it again in 2015. Friday 18 and Saturday 19 September will see a three-race Championship Regatta with evening prizegiving and social events in Cowes. Off the water, you can expect our usual warm welcome at either of our two Solent clubhouses at Ocean Village, Southampton and at Gins on the Beaulieu River. Our race organisation is supported by the Club’s helpful and knowledgeable staff together with one of the strongest and most experienced volunteer race management teams to be found anywhere in the UK; including international, national and regional officials. Our 2015 Notices of Race, Sailing Instructions, supporting information, results, race reports and much more information besides will all be published on our website: Visit www.rsyc.org.uk to keep up to date with everything that’s going on at the RSYC. All races and race events are open to Members and non-Members alike • A full range of year-round Fully Crewed and Double Handed events • More classes, prizes and trophies in the Double Handed Series races • A separate class for any six one-design or white sail boats in any race or series • Text / E-mail declarations for all applicable races • Hot meals to suit a range of budgets at our Clubhouses after local races.
www.rsyc.org.uk
So whether you’ve raced with us before or not, we look forward to giving you quality, competitive racing on the water and a warm and friendly welcome back at the Clubhouse afterwards.
Come and join us in 2015. Royal Southampton Yacht Club 2015

Fully Crewed Racing
R
oyal Southampton Yacht Club is proud to offer one of the most comprehensive programmes of year-round fully crewed racing of any Solent yacht club. Many of our events are run on Southampton Water adjacent to our Ocean Village clubhouse and offer challenging and competitive racing but without the ‘Solent chop’. All our fully crewed races are open to Club Members and non-members alike and many are dual scored for both IRC and Club rated boats. Typically there will be racing for two or three classes but we are always willing to establish a class for any group of six or more similar boats. Every race is followed by a prize giving in the bar of the Ocean Village clubhouse where hot food and a warm welcome also await. Southampton Water is within easy reach of Southampton, Hamble and Cowes marinas and offers scope for a wide variety of racing using fixed and laid race marks to suit the sailing wind. Conditions are typically more sheltered than in the Solent, whilst the funnelling effect of the channel sometimes means that we have enough sailing breeze when conditions in the Solent are too light.
Sunday Morning Racing Between September and April we race on Sunday mornings. Race Series may vary but typically we run two races of around an hour’s duration each between 10 am and 1 pm. Racing is organised by one or two teams of race officers and committee boats depending on boat numbers.
Thursday Evening Racing Between Easter and September our Southampton Water racing is held on Thursday evenings. It’s a great way to relax after a long day by getting out on the water with friends for an hour of racing before sunset. And, as ever, each race is followed a prizegiving in the Ocean Village clubhouse bar. In 2015 we will again include double handed boats sailing under white sails that wish to compete. www.rsyc.org.uk

TOPSAIL INSURANCE TWILIGHT SERIES Thursday evenings 7 pm. 21st May - 25th June TOPSAIL INSURANCE SUMMER SERIES Thursday evenings 7 pm. 2nd July - 27th August Both sponsored by Topsail Insurance, these two Series of six dual scored Southampton Water races on Thursday evenings run right through the summer. It’s a great way to relax on a summer’s evening and if you’re struggling for crew why not try it double handed? Entry is open to Members and non-members, monohulls and multihulls. There will be the usual prizegiving at the Clubhouse after every race. COASTAL PURSUITS WINTER SERIES Sundays 10 am. 11th October - 15th November This popular Series this year comprises ten races over five Sundays*. There’ll be two races between 10 am. and 1 pm. each day. Monohulls with IRC certificates will be dual scored. At the Ocean Village Clubhouse there’ll be prizes, a warm welcome and hot food after racing each week. *Please see the diary for all race dates.

Double Handed Racing
W
e are proud to organise what is probably the most popular double handed racing in the country. The innovations introduced in 2014 gave the Series yet another boost and will be seen again in the 2015 season:
Inshore, Alongshore and Offshore Series. Each will consist of four races but now with one discard. The Island and Nab races are part of the Alongshore Series. The Main series will comprise all twelve races with five discards. The new Mike Golding Trophy will once again reward the best contribution to the spirit of double handed racing. Our Sponsors: Our Double Handed Racing wouldn’t be the same without the close and much valued support of our sponsors, Molson Coors. If you’ve not raced double handed, come and see what you’ve been missing! There’s a great atmosphere both on and off the water. In the RSYC Double Handed Series there are individual race class prizes and trophies, plus class trophies for the Inshore, Alongshore, Offshore and Main Series. The annual double handed prizegiving will be on Saturday 21st November. SPRING SOLENT DOUBLE (Inshore) Saturday 11th April The first race of the season and of the Main and Inshore Series. Three or four hours racing of a passage flavour in the Solent. A race prizegiving and welcome at the Ocean Village Clubhouse after racing. WEYMOUTH DOUBLE (Offshore) Saturday 2nd/Sunday 3rd May The first and second races of the Offshore Series this year are daytime races to and from Weymouth. There will be the usual celebration and prizegiving at the Royal Dorset Yacht Club on the Saturday evening. CHERBOURG DOUBLE (Offshore) Friday 22nd May The first cross-Channel race and the third in this year’s Offshore Series. This popular race starts in the central Solent on Friday evening to provide a daylight landfall. This is the second May Bank Holiday weekend so there’s extra time for the trip home after a prizegiving on Saturday evening. POOLE BAR DOUBLE (Alongshore) Saturday 13th June One of the new Alongshore races, the Poole Bar Double will start and end in the Solent. There’ll be a prizegiving and party at a Solent destination after the race with plenty of time to get home on Sunday. WEST PRINCESSA DOUBLE (Alongshore) Saturday 4th July Like the Poole Bar race, this second of the new Alongshore Series races will start and end in the Solent but take boats east to West Princessa Buoy. Once again, there’ll be a party and a prizegiving at a Solent destination after the race with plenty of time to get home on Sunday. www.rsyc.org.uk

Double Handed Racing ISLAND DOUBLE (Alongshore) Saturday 18th July Always the most popular of the double handed races, regularly attracting more than 100 boats. This year we’ll again use the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club’s line for our start and finish off Cowes. Circumnavigate the Isle of Wight and collect a pair of engraved glasses as well as competing for the usual prizes and trophies! LAID MARKS DOUBLE and SUMMER DOUBLE (Inshore) Saturday 1st August This Saturday racing will combine races two and three of the Inshore series on one day. Racing will be in the central Solent. The Laid Marks Double will be of around 90 minutes and the Summer Double will be an around the cans race of around two to three hours. As ever, there’ll be a chance to compare performances at an evening prizegiving. BRIXHAM DOUBLE (Offshore) Friday 22nd August The longest and the last of the 2015 Offshore Series. This race over the August Bank Holiday can be challenging but a great welcome awaits us; plus it offers the opportunity to linger and cruise home. NAB TOWER DOUBLE (Alongshore) Sunday 20th September This is the classic race of around 30 nm from the central Solent to the Nab Tower and back and concludes the 2015 Alongshore Series. This year it will follow the two days of the IRC National Championships and so will be run on a Sunday instead of Saturday. AUTUMN SOLENT DOUBLE (Inshore) Saturday 10th October The concluding race of the Inshore and Main Series takes us on a three or four hour race with a passage flavour in the Solent. A warm welcome awaits at the Ocean Village prizegiving after racing. 2015 IRC DOUBLE HANDED NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP 18th/19th September This event and its three races are separate from the double handed Main Series. The racing will be on Friday 18th September and Saturday 19th September and will comprise three high quality races to find the IRC National Class Champions. The evenings will see prizegivings and celebrations in Cowes. See rsyc.org.uk and mini-site dhnationals.co.uk for more details.

SAILING SEMINARS Our occasional Sailing Seminars are held mainly from October to March. These popular talks and presentations may be about any relevant topic of general interest. Usually they’ll follow on from one of the Club’s equally popular and excellent value 7 pm. carvery suppers. Seminar dates, speakers and topics will be publicised in our e-bulletins, posters and on our website. Visitors from other clubs are also very welcome to come along.
RADIO CONTROLLED YACHTS Started in 2012, our new Radio Controlled Yachts section is flourishing and offers a wide range of events throughout 2015. There are seminars, talks and workshops at both the Gins and Ocean Village Clubhouses and as more and more Members discover the fascination of this sport we plan to hold more competitive and class racing events. Members of other RC boat clubs can have limited use of our clubhouses for specific events but can also take advantage of our Introductory Membership offers for full use of the Club’s great venues. Please see the diary for details of all Radio Controlled Yachts events in 2015.
NEW DINGHY SECTION In recent years, the generosity of a variety of donors and Club Members has allowed us to accumulate a growing fleet of dinghies based, like our Cadet Section, at our Gins clubhouse on the River Beaulieu. As a result, we now feel able to initiate a new Dinghy Section which aims to make these boats available to all Club Members of all ages. Our aim is to encourage a thriving community of dinghy sailors based mainly, but not exclusively on Gins. If you’d like to start or re-start dinghy sailing please keep an eye on the rsyc.org.uk website or contact us for more details. www.rsyc.org.uk

Cadet Sailing 2015
W
e see it as one of our fundamental responsibilities to encourage youngsters to get involved in our sport and to give them a safe and friendly introduction to what we hope may become a lifetime’s pleasure. Our Cadet events run though the year mainly in school holidays and mainly from our Gins clubhouse on the River Beaulieu. These family orientated but fully formally supervised days and weekends offer sailing and boating in a range of craft and a real chance for young people to gain hands-on experience. Often, Cadets are related to RSYC Members but that’s not a pre-requisite. All are welcome. Please see our 2015 diary of cadet events and contact us for more details.

Training
T
he RSYC has been an RYA accredited Training Centre for nearly 20 years. We provide a range of both practical and theory courses to Club Members and non-members alike.
Theory courses are, in the main, held at the Club with some of the more specialised courses being outsourced to other training schools. The Powerboat Level 2 courses are held on local waters using the Club’s own Ribcraft 585 powerboat. There is also a very healthy training scheme for those Members wishing to progress through the RYA qualified race officer scheme and, once again, practical training takes place on the Club committee boat, a Mitchell 31, and the Ribcraft 585. From time to time, a one day structured safety programme for man-overboard training and flare demonstration is run to allow Members to practise on their own boats those aspects not normally covered by other courses. The recovery of a dummy from the water using own methods being the main exercise, but the opportunity to handle and fire flares is also part of the day’s activities.
The RYA Courses offered include: Basic Navigation and Safety Theory; Day Skipper Theory; Yachtmaster Theory; Sea Survival; ISAF Offshore Safety Certificate; Diesel Engine; GMDSS VHF; RADAR; First Aid; ISAF Personal Safety. Powerboat Level 2 and practical ‘own boat’ assessments for the International Certificate of Competence (ICC) together with Inland Waterways. CEVNI Endorsements are also offered. All courses are run by fully qualified RYA instructors. Furthermore, if Members wish to do courses outside those programmed they can express their interest and if there are sufficient numbers, extra courses can be arranged. www.rsyc.org.uk
