Photo by Phil h ardingLying between the cultural hubs of Bristol and Bath and set deeply in the heart of the picturesque West Country, Saltford Golf Club is a gem set in 151 acres of stunning woodland with wonderful views of the countryside.
The course is complemented by a well-stocked Pro Shop, a large putting green, indoor and outdoor practice areas, a chipping green and a superb covered floodlit driving range.
The surroundings alone are worth a visit and the tree-lined fairways, undulating greens and tactically placed bunkers offer a stern challenge to all golfers.
The clubhouse boasts a casual bar and mezzanine, a lounge bar, a separate restaurant and a snooker room with a full-size table. Conferencing facilities are available and two large patios afford fine views over our splendid finishing hole.
Though our course lies close to two major cities, visitors will feel that they are miles away from town life as they enjoy this private parkland course, part of an historic estate.
Saltford is regarded as one of the county’s most friendly and welcoming golf clubs. Golfers of all ages and abilities are most welcome to visit us and enjoy our course and our facilities. We look forward to welcoming you to Saltford.
The course that is such an integral part of the club we have today was founded in 1904 when a group of local business men and politicians took the opportunity to lease land from Earl Temple for just £325 per year. The course founded then is the same one golfers play on today, over 100 years later.
Following the First and Second World Wars the club’s energies were devoted mainly to negotiating modest rental increases from our new landlord, the Duchy of Cornwall, which had purchased the land from Earl Temple in 1941.
In the years that followed, the course was extensively reworked and extended with a large amount of help from the famous golfer and course designer, Harry Vardon.
Saltford is also proud to have been one of the six founder members of the Somerset Golf Union.
In the early 1960s the then Club Professional, Leslie Mouland, masterminded the first significant changes to the course since its establishment and, In the 1990s, the course was given its current layout with the introduction of the new 2nd, 3rd, 7th, 10th and 17th holes and new greens on holes 1, 4, 5 and 18.
The club celebrated its centenary in 2004 and continues to go from strength to strength, enhancing its reputation as one of the leading clubs in the South West, having played host to National, Regional and County events.
The Saltford Golf Club crest was designed to incorporate many aspects of our local history.
The Shield carries 6 golden clarions or trumpets which come from the Arms of the now extinct Keynsham Abbey which was founded in 1166 by William, Earl of Gloucester. Situated above the clarions are flowing blue and white lines which represent the rivers Chew and Avon.
Around the Dragon’s neck is a necklace of brass wire on which is suspended a cogwheel relating to the importance of the former British brass Industry in Keynsham and Saltford which employed so many local people.
The Dragon holds between its claws the basic arms of the Bridges family who bought the Abbey lands in 1552 and built a mansion. ”Maintien Le Droit “was the Bridges’ motto.
The Helm and Mantling are in red and gold. Above the helm is an unusual coronet which links the area to its Roman past.
The Golden Dragon relates to the Dragon of Wessex, the Royal West Saxon connection to Keynsham.
The adoption of these armorial bearings was very appropriate as it covers the history of Keynsham and Saltford over one thousand years.
Saltford Golf Course has become one of Somerset’s finest golf courses, providing an excellent challenge to golfers of all abilities throughout the year. The course is always in first class condition and rarely closes during the winter months, when we continue to use the main greens whenever possible.
Our PGA Professional Chris Coles is here to give you the hole-by-hole tour and a few tips to help you conquer our Par 71, 6402 yard course.
Hole 1 – Par 5, 531 yards. S.I. 9
This hole throws you in at the deep end as a tough par 5 sets you on your way. To get your round off to a good start it is best to hug the left hand side on this left to right dogleg to avoid the out of bounds area on the right. This approach gives you more options to attempt to find the green with your second shot.
Hole 2 – Par 3, 168 yards. S.I. 15
Bunkers on the left and the right guard the long and narrow green so take care from the tee because an inaccurate tee-shot could land your ball in trouble.
Hole 3 – Par 4, 344 yards. S.I. 11
This short par 4 slopes from left to right and can be tough for anyone who attempts to reach the green in one. Any balls that come up short may be punished by the deep bunker on the front right of the green. A short shot left of the oak tree only leaves a short approach and a good birdie opportunity.
Hole 4 – Par 4, 423 yards. S.I. 3
This dead straight hole is the highest point on the course. The fairway rolls away to the right and the short rough on the left can leave you in trouble as can the stream which crosses the fairway. Two well-placed shots can set you up well but a par on this hole will feel like a victory.
Hole 5 – Par 5, 571 yards. S.I. 7
This is a hole for the big hitters. Avoid the left-hand side which is covered in woodland and be sure to take care with your second shot. It is possible to reach the hole in two but short hitters may want to pitch up short before attempting to reach the green.
Hole 6 – Par 4, 442 yards. S.I. 1
There is no room for error on this tricky par 4. Favouring the left-hand side gives you the best chance of reaching the green in two as the hole opens up just short of the ridge from where the green is visible.
Hole 7 – Par 4, 346 yards. S.I. 17
A right to left dogleg par 4 that goes downhill, this hole is relatively straightforward but you have to be wary of the two bunkers on the left of the fairway. An iron off the tee leaves you a simple shot to the green.
Hole 8 – Par 4, 453 yards. S.I. 5
Everything runs to the left on this long par 4 and the trees are hard to avoid. Problems abound when you reach this green and leaving the ball a long way from the flag on this two-tiered green will make a par score difficult to achieve.
The natural stone-built Halfway House behind the 8th Green provides delicious hot and cold snacks all the year round. A bacon roll or cup of tea is the perfect start to the second half of your round. Toilet facilities are also located here.
Hole 9 – Par 3, 175 yards. S.I. 13
This hole has a very narrow approach and is surrounded by bunkers and, to make things even trickier, shots normally have to be taken into the prevailing wind. If you’re going to miss the green here it is best to miss to the left.
Hole 10 – Par 4, 364 yards. S.I. 6
The tee shot is the key to success on this tricky par 4. The green may look tempting but beware as the severe back to front slope makes it the most difficult two putt on the course.
Hole 11 – Par 3, 154 yards. S.I. 12
One of the most picturesque holes on the course; a sloping green surrounded by bunkers leaves little room for error and only a wellplaced shot to the centre of the green will give you any hope of a birdie.
Hole 12 – Par 4, 340 yards. S.I. 10
This short par 4 over the valley offers up stunning views of Bath and Kelston. It is a hole the long hitters relish as they see the possibility of an eagle but the greenside bunkers punish those who aren’t accurate. Brave golfers will often be rewarded.
Hole 13 – Par 4, 423 yards. S.I. 2
A tight fairway makes for a tricky hole with well-placed trees ready to catch wayward shots. A three-tiered green makes putting tough and, as with many of our holes, a par should be considered a very good result.
Hole 14 – Par 5, 476 yards. S.I. 16
Out of bounds on the right and a line of trees on the left means that only a straight shot down the fairway will see you in a good position for your second shot. Longer hitters may be tempted to go for the green in two but bunkers short of the green await so take care.
Hole 15 – Par 4, 298 yards. S.I. 18
The wind usually plays a factor on the shortest par 4 on the course. Many hidden undulations can catch visitors out but it is a feature to which our members have grown accustomed. Panoramic views of Bath and Bristol can be enjoyed from the tee.

We have a range of memorials in all shapes and styles or alternatively we can design a bespoke memorial manufactured to your specific specification. We will work with you every step of the way to develop a fitting memorial for your loved lost one.
Hole 16 – Par 4, 385 yards. S.I. 4 It’s back across the valley for the 16th and a tough par 4 which can be deceptively long. Avoiding the bank on the right is your best chance of making the green in two.
Hole 17 – Par 3, 156 yards. S.I. 14 This is our signature hole; a drop hole par 3 with a lake-fed stream and a deep bunker protecting the green, it is truly a sight to behold. Aim for the back of the green to be safe or the hazards could claim your ball.
Hole 18 – Par 4, 363 yards. S.I. 8
A tight drive through an avenue of trees gets you on your way for the final hole. With dense woodland on the left and an out of bounds area on the right there can be no margin for error. Once the tee shot is on the fairway a relatively simple second should see you on the green.
With the testing course completed breathe a sigh of relief and go and enjoy a drink in the clubhouse.
When we discovered that we had, at the side of one of our tees, an ancient parish boundary wall which had been reduced to a heap of rubble, a group of senior members decided to try and rebuild it. Their enthusiasm and success was such that for the following four years they rebuilt several other dry stone walls which now add history and charm to our course.
The commitment of our members to take up this challenge and help rebuild a part of the club that is so significantly tied to our history shows the passion our members hold for the club. This is something that makes us very proud.

The floodlit driving range is the club’s latest initiative in its mission to become one of the leading golf clubs in the South West.
An 8 bay, fully floodlit covered driving range was the culmination of years of planning and negotiation with external contractors. The range itself has been fully landscaped by the use of thousands of tonnes of imported fill material, which was then grassed to produce natural looking mounding.
The driving bays offer the latest state of the art technology and balls are dispensed to customers by means of a plastic swipe card, which can be charged with money in the Pro Shop, making the whole process simple, smooth and user friendly.
The low-level floodlighting is extremely effective and unobtrusive and this allows the range to be fully open for use until 9.00pm throughout the year.
Resident PGA Club Professional said: “The 300 yards range is a great addition to our practice and teaching facilities.
It means we can hold lessons regardless of the weather and we hope a lot of schools will be using this facility to introduce young people to golf.”
The driving range is open to members and visitors, and a specific driving range membership can be purchases annually in order to receive discount on both the purchase of range balls and food and drink in the clubhouse.
In addition, a new practice chipping green has been constructed and recently opened in the summer of 2020 which together with the driving range, putting green and indoor Performance Studio makes Saltford Golf Club the venue of choice for many golfers in the surrounding area.
Another addition to these extensive facilities is the 6 hole academy course at the far end of the driving range. It enable youngsters and beginners to learn the game of golf, with holes ranging from 45 yards to 90 yards. The academy course offers its own membership options incorporating all the practice facilities, and if the perfect membership for new golfers and families.

competitions run on the blue tees, can reduce their handicap to 30 at which point they will progress to the yellow tees.
This is the full course which everyone plays.
When juniors are able to pass a very brief assessment by one of our coaching team they then progress to the “blue tees”. Each hole on the main course has a blue tee, situated some distance in front of the main tees. This gives juniors the chance to play each hole on the course without the long carries from the tee, which can be daunting for smaller, younger juniors. Each junior is allocated an unofficial handicap of 72 (4 per hole) as soon as they progress to the blue tees and, through the numerous

Junior members have a full diary of events each season but our juniors are free to pick and choose which ones they want to play. These events include club nights (alternate Sunday evenings starting in March going through until October), competitions both at Saltford and away on other courses, league matches against other clubs (home and away) and a summer golf tour most years.
Under the guidance of our teaching professionals, junior coaching is taken very seriously at Saltford and this takes place on many levels from club night coaching for the absolute beginner (where clubs etc. are available to loan) to coaching by the county for the better players. Whatever the ability level of the junior, there is a suitable coaching scheme at Saltford.
Over the last few years, our juniors have had their most successful period for a long time, winning the Bristol & District Junior League, reaching the play - offs, representing Somerset in the national junior county team finals at Woodhall Spa in consecutive years. We have been fortunate in having a lot of low handicap junior golfers and although some of these have moved on, we have a strong nucleus of extremely keen younger juniors whom, with our older and more experienced juniors, we are hoping will carry the junior section into a new era of success.
We have a very active and friendly Seniors’ Section and all male golfers automatically become Seniors on their 55th birthday.
The Section organises 11 handicap qualifying competitions including the Saltford Seniors’ Open during the year. In addition, we organise several Bowmakers and Better Ball Competitions.
With junior membership fees starting at well under £1 per week and preused half sets of clubs (adequate for the new starter) being available at very reasonable prices, golf is not an expensive game to take up and we would encourage you to give golf a try. If you would like to find out more, please contact David Phillips, The Junior Organiser, on 0117 9475156.

A Seniors’ BBQ and a Charity Lunch are opportunities for new members to meet other Seniors’, plus additional club activities for a vibrant social life for those who want it.
Home matches are generally played on weekday afternoons starting at approximately 3.30pm, followed by an informal two course meal (dress code smart casual).
