to Seaford Town Football Clubs first official annual! Its been a strange couple of years at the club with all that’s been going on in the world, but with the support of the community and our wonderful club volunteers we’ve come out the other side stronger. I thought I would give you a quick rundown of a what to expect from this annual followed by some key milestones the club has achieved this year. As with any Premier League club annual this will be packed with information about the club, its players and coaching staff as well as games and posters! I’d also like to say a thank you to all the advertisers who have made this publication possible and to all the club sponsors of whom we cannot survive without! So now with some of our major club highlights over the last season: Arguably the clubs biggest achievement with a special thank you to Youth Chairman, Mike Greve for all his hard work in gaining us our FA Community Club Charter Standard. This is the highest standard and shows the clubs commitment to our players and community. For the first time ever the club has launched a competitive Ladies side that competes in the SCWGFL as well as a non-competitive ladies veterans side! Great work from Billy Pout to create an amazing team from scratch!

We welcomed a new club mascot to Seaford Town! Planksy the Seal was born from the imagination of Under 9s player Harrison who won our design a mascot competition!

Another first and something I’m immensely proud of the club for participating in was our support of Marcus Rashford’s Free School Meals campaign. We were the first football club in the UK to get involved and during the school holidays we have provided 100s of meals for children of low income families and continue to support them.

We partnered with Swerve Soccer to provide our youth players with school holiday football camps. Also a big congratulations to Olly Davies and the Swerve team who secured an exclusive partnership with La Liga!

We’ve held two major events this year; firstly our series of England Fan Parks where we saw England reach the finals! And our annual Youth Tournament. Both are huge projects run completely by our fantastic team of volunteers, thank you all so much for your hard work!

Sadly we were subject to a break-in which fortunately didn’t result in any theft but caused expensive damage

Unfortunately due to covid we have had two seasons cancelled so there is not too much to report from

“We partnered with Swerve Soccer to provide our youth players with school holiday football camps.” to our serving window. Gary the legend from Elite Industries donated and installed a new secure shutter to help prevent future break ins, thank you Gary! We covered the cost of a water refill station located at Martello Tower to support Seaford Town Council & Refill Seaford-Newhaven. This refill station gives local residents and visitors free access to fresh water in the hope to reduce single use plastics. I’m a bit of a geek and love the world of crypto and bitcoin so when I noticed a new trend I had to get the club involved and we become the first football club in the world to self-

the on-pitch this time round but our Men’s First Team did reach the semifinals of the Supplementary Shield after qualifying top of our group, so a great confidence booster for Manager Paul Wise and the team for the 21/22 season. Wisey has built a very strong side that has a real chance to achieve a lot this year so please do join us at The Crouch in supporting the lads. I hope you enjoy this annual and I look forward to reporting on more achievements next year! Tom Webster, Chairman. www.seafordtownfc.com | 5

THE ANNUAL 2021 - 2022

Y R O T HIS FOUNDING

Seaford FC was officially founded in 1888 succeeding the first competitive Seaford club, the Seaford Rovers FC. The Rovers had, however, already been well established by the mid1880s and continued as the Seaford Rovers until at least 1914. It seems likely that the Seaford team was somewhat loosely referred to as either Seaford Rovers or Seaford FC rather than there being two distinct clubs. One quite plausible tale says that football was started in 1882 by three workers at the Elm Brewery, at the East Street end of Croft Lane. Their proximity to the open land at The Crouch would have made it a logical venue, though photos exist (as above) of Seaford footballers on the Beamlands (the old river bed, between Steyne Road and the shingle sea bank), also called “The Cricketfield” (hence Cricketfield Road). Major Lewis Crook, son of Thomas Crook who founded the first gas company in Seaford, was President of both the Seaford cricket and football clubs during the 1890s, if not for rather longer. 6 | www.seafordtownfc.com

PLAYING HISTORY 1886 - 1989

The first known reference to Seaford Rovers dates from 1886, in The Seafordian. It reported on some Seaford Rovers matches and they were evidently one of the best teams in Sussex. Their founding coincides with the establishment of such clubs as Tottenham Hotspur (1882), Arsenal (1886) and Manchester United (as Newton Heath, 1878).

“Seaford FC was officially founded in 1888” Their first recorded match was on 8th October 1886 when Seaford Rovers beat Lewes 5-0 and just four days later they beat Devonshire Park (Eastbourne) 4-2. On 16th November 1886, Rovers played in their first recorded Cup Tie, when they beat Hurst College 1-0 in the first round of the Sussex Football Association Cup. They then won 5-0 over South Lynn (Eastbourne) and 4-0 against Horsham to reach the Final v

Burgess Hill. They won the game 1-0, but it had to be replayed following a dispute over the rules. Seaford Rovers clinched the Cup 2-0, and came home to a heroes’ welcome at The Bay Hotel, the club’s then headquarters. In 1910 Seaford FC won the Sussex Junior Cup. All clubs in Sussex ceased playing competitive games for the duration of World War I and part of The Crouch was dug up to grow food. Between The Wars Seaford FC played in the Mid Sussex League and won its Montgomery Cup in 1936 and 1939. Post-War Seaford Town FC joined the Sussex County Football League (SCFL) Division Two in 1952, and won promotion in 1963-64 after finishing as runners-up to Selsey. The next seven seasons were spent in the top Division (finishing 4th in 1965-66) before being relegated back to Division Two in 1971. Seaford Sunday Football Club (SSFC) was established as a separate club in 1968 (when organised Sunday sport was first permitted in Seaford), with many players playing for both STFC and

THE ANNUAL 2021 - 2022

SSFC. The SSFC was managed by Brian Powney, the Seagulls’ goalie 1960-74, and enjoyed several successful seasons before folding. Whilst sharing some players with STFC, the Seaford Sunday team played most of its matches at The Downs, on the pitch since replaced by all-weather “astro-turf”. The Club first entered the FA Vase in the 1975-76 season, but was knocked out by Cowes Sports in the Preliminary Round, losing 2-4 at home. In 1978 the club dropped out of the County League, but returned as founder members of the new Third Division five years later. In 1985/86 they returned to senior football as champions, and in 198889 took the Division Two title.

THE CLUB GROUND - THE CROUCH

“Crouch” derives from an Olde English word meaning Cross (as in a wooden signpost or similar). With a little imagination, at a time when Sae-forde was a lot smaller and everything a lot further from everywhere else, the existence of a cross on the hilltop where Crooked Lane, Crouch Lane and East Street now converge is entirely plausible. In 1602 the Vicar was fined for not maintaining the highway known as “le Crouch”; in 1712 there was

“At one time the Nazis attempted to snuff out football in Seaford!” known to be a market there, and in 1799 Seaford’s records noted that: “the Jury found a True Bill of Nuisance against ... the Ship Inn and also from the Dark Lane [Saxon Lane] to the piece of land called the Crouch”. As the titling of the photos below confirms, the exact location of “The Crouch” was once less well defined than it is now. Seaford football goes back to at least the 1880s. The club, however, has never had wealthy patrons, so cannot boast of having a Home Ground with lush, level turf surrounded by stands, a spacious clubhouse and training grounds! According to the late Seaford historian, Pat Berry, football was said to have been started in 1882, by three young workers at the Elm Brewery in Croft Lane, whose proximity to the land at The Crouch would have made it a natural choice of venue. Certainly Seaford’s main football club has played since at least the early 1900s at The Crouch, a slightly sloping field conveniently close to the Town Centre, but which remains something of a mystery to many local inhabitants, probably because no-

one has ever though it worthwhile to sign-post its location. The team founded by these lads is said to have been expanded into a club – presumably the Seaford Rovers - in about 1886. After purchasing the land in the late 1800s, the owner - John F Plaister, who lived at Crouch House on the corner of Bramber Lane and East Street - made the field available for the use of local footballers; he happened to like the game and felt it deserved a home. In 1930, following his death, the property (which consisted of 25 rooms and 4 acres of land) was sold by auction to the then Seaford Urban District Council (SUDC); they moved their offices to Crouch House in June 1931. At one time the Nazis attempted to snuff out football in Seaford! On 18 November 1940 the football pitch on The Crouch was hit by three bombs from attacking warplanes, throwing up large craters. Another German bomb landed on the field in 1942. More Seaford Town FC history can be found on our website. www.seafordtownfc.com | 7

club members and neighbours joining us for a few drinks and braving the cold weather!

The beating heart of Seaford Town FC is our clubhouse located on Bramber Lane in The Crouch Gardens. Over the years it hasn’t had many upgrades but has always been kept well and serves players, supporters and local residents. More recently our attentions have turned to making improvements to the clubhouse with our short term goal to open full time as a bar and restaurant. In the summer of 2019 we ran a survey to get feedback on the clubhouse and the club as a whole. From this feedback we made a number of immediate improvements. Most notably a new Kenco Coffee machine and two new chilled beer pumps serving Heineken and Birra Moretti. In January 2020 local businessman Jason Burrill joined the committee as a Director of Club Development and kindly donated funds to give the clubhouse and bar a spruce up. A fresh lick of paint, new furniture and a big tidy made the whole place more welcoming. Following the improvements to the clubhouse we looked to the home

team changing room which was in desperate need for an upgrade.

Looking towards the future our dream has always been to have the clubhouse open every day as a bar and restaurant. This would bring in vital income to the club and give the community a new place to eat, drink and socialise.

Sam Leppard of SJL Ltd and his team will be completing a full Grant Gerrish of Heatwood renovation of the clubhouse starting Carpentry kindly volunteered his time with a new large sliding door with to dramatically improve the changing ramp access making the club room. FROM the dugout

“we have managed to ” team d goo ery v build a

Paul Wise has been involved with Seaford Town for a very long time in a number of capacities, but he became the first team manager three years ago. Paul played for the club as a youngster, and it is also a family affair for him as his father managed Seaford many years ago. Since returning to the club, he has fulfilled several roles, initially being a goalkeeping coach, before becoming our assistant manager and then, finally, taking up his current position. During his tenure in the hot seat, Paul and his staff have obviously had to deal with several disruptions, primarily to do with Covid. With two seasons ended prematurely due to the pandemic, the first team have struggled over the past three seasons to maintain a strong run of form. We did, however, reach the semi-final stage of the Supplementary Shield, which was introduced in the absence of the regular league campaign last term. This season, however, Seaford have been much-improved and Paul has got his sights set on promotion at the end of the season. Paul’s vision for the future is very much centred around bringing long-awaited success back to The Crouch, starting with promotion as soon as possible. WE GO AGAIN!!

THE ANNUAL 2021 - 2022

Chairman’s notes

Tom Webster became chairman of Seaford in 2019 and it’s fair to say he has not endured the easiest of starts to life as a non-league chairman, however he is refusing to be beaten and has worked hard to ensure the club bounces back stronger than ever. The outbreak of Covid-19 in early 2020 wreaked havoc at all levels of football, particularly non-league, and Tom is therefore still yet to complete a full season in his role. He is, however, in the midst of overseeing largescale redevelopments to the club, none more so than in the clubhouse, where a full-scale refurbishment is taking place. As well as modernising and upscaling the clubhouse itself, there has been a focus on accessibility, with full wheelchair access now available and a disabled toilet being added. This is part of our plan to ensure that Seaford is a football club for everyone, meaning that anyone and everyone can use our facilities and feel welcome here at the club. Aside from this, there is also ongoing renovations to the kitchen facilities here at the football club, with a brandnew commercial kitchen allowing us to operate as a takeaway service seven days a week. We hope to launch our own brand of food, based mainly around chicken, that will provide fans and guests with high quality food and also increase interest in Seaford as more than just a football club. The bar area within the clubhouse is being relocated slightly, in order

to ensure that the area in particular acts solely as a communal area for supporters to mingle before and after matches, with a great selection of highquality food and drinks available to all.

This will then link to our brand-new garden area, located just outside the clubhouse, which will benefit us most during the summer months. It will allow supporters to enjoy the (hopefully) good weather outside while benefitting from the ability to enjoy refreshments from inside. One of the most exciting plans that we have is to lay a state-of-the-art 4g pitch here at The Crouch. We are currently in talks with the council about the benefits of this, not only to Seaford Town FC and Seaford Council, but also to the wider community.

We have a plan to reach all of these targets within the next five years, and we are already working hard to achieve exactly that. Since his arrival, Tom has wasted no time in making improvements to the football club and putting plans in place to continue that, and we are already seeing the benefits of this. Tom is fully aware that long-term success on the pitch more often than not stems from having the right foundations in place in the shortterm, and we are confident that the works we are undertaking will ensure Seaford Town FC has a long and successful future for the next generations to enjoy.

This will help to unite the football club as one, as currently some of our teams are based in different locations around the town. There are also exciting plans in place to improve The Crouch as a ground, with billboarding and turnstiles set to be put in place surrounding the entire pitch.

“During my short time here, we have been able not only to put plans in place for the future but also to start football pyramid, but also in terms of making changes off the pitch, that some of the work already. benefit not only everyone involved We are making several developments with the football club but also the both on the pitch and off it, with community as a whole. renovations to our clubhouse having We want to ensure that Seaford already gotten underway. remains a pillar of this community, and My vision for the club is to take it as we firmly believe that we can bring far as possible, not only in terms of benefits to both the club itself and the progressing up the divisions and the community that we are part of.”

Ladies First Team Seaford Town Ladies FC was officially formed in 2019 and was an idea generated by our Chairman, Tom Webster. It was Tom’s vision that as part of building the Seaford Town FC family, Seaford needed a Ladies Squad and with the help of First Team Players, Billy Pout and Bradley Tighe, the vision was born! We play in the Sussex County Women & Girls Football League -Premier Division and our home

games are played at The Crouch, Bramber Lane, Seaford. This is also the home ground for our Men’s and Youth Teams. As with everyone else, our 2019/20 season was severely disrupted by Covid, but we’re now looking ahead to a brighter future and continuing to build on our Ladies Team history. We hope to see many more wins and hopefully some silverware in the coming seasons... #UPTHETOWN

Mens & Womens Veterans At Seaford, we have active Vets teams for both men and women. Our men’s Vets team was created three years ago, and the women’s side followed a year later. Despite being quite new to the scene, both teams have performed very well and have built a strong foundation to move forward. The nature of Vets football allows players in the twilight of their career to continue playing at a more recreational pace and standard. That being said, there is still a hugely competitive element to our Vets teams, and the standard is growing every season. We are always on the lookout for more players, so if you are interested in dusting off the boots, please feel free to reach out to the club and we can point you in the right direction.

Under 18’s & Under 23’s

At Seaford Town we have a thriving senior section comprising not only of our men’s senior side, but also an under-18s and under-23s team.

Jamie Buckett has been the manager of the under-18s since 2018, with the help of Richard Wilson - Assistant Manager and Shaun Lee - Coach. Richard has also been manager of the under-23s since 2019. Jamie Buckett - Assistant Manager and Terry Grant – Coach, complete the coaching team. Our under-18s team compete in the Southern Counties Youth U18 Football League East, while the under-23s play in the Southern Combination League U23 East.

We have a real desire to allow young players the opportunities that they deserve, and we therefore strive to ensure that there are under-18s players involved in under-23s matchday squads each week.

Everyone involved with coaching at the club is focussed on progressing players through the youth ranks, and then eventually into senior football.

This helps the players to further their development, and also ensures that we are preparing the next crop of players for our first team.

Since taking charge of the under18s, Jamie has formed a team from scratch, and they sat fourth in the table before the interruption of Covid-19 last season. This season offered a fresh chance for some players to impress and Jamie has been pleased with the commitment and teamwork that his side have shown.

SEAL PUPS

At Seaford, we try to get children playing and enjoying football as young as possible, so we offer regular football for children aged 4-6.

The Seal Pups allows children to get a taste of football in a recreational sense without the competition of playing regular fixtures, although we do sometimes arrange the odd friendly as a bit of fun more than anything. The sessions are a safe space to give youngsters their first taste of club football training, all with the help of our resident mascot of course! The thoughts and needs of the parents are taken into consideration as it can often be a big step to introduce such young feet to football.

The Seal Pups helps children to prepare for progression into the under 7s team, and also allows us to build teams that are ready to go into the under 7s teams that then compete in leagues.

It has acted as a successful feeder into the youth teams and provided a pathway for players to play competitive football.

Inclusive Ability Football is a sport that should be made available for absolutely everybody and that’s something we take very seriously at the club. The inclusive ability football offers a bit of respite to the parents and a fun session for everyone involved. The players come down on a Saturday morning and they train on the main pitch which provides a secure and safe ground and facility. It is an enclosed space which gives peace of mind to the parents of our players. Our inclusive programme includes children with a range of

YOUTH TeamS

We are very proud of the established youth teams we have here at Seaford Town FC. Age Groups: • Under 7s • Under 8s • Three under 9s • Two under 10s • Under 11s • Under 12s • Under 13s • Under 14s • Two under 15s • Under 16s In terms of girls’ teams, we have got • Weetabix Wildcats • Under 8s • Under 9s • Under 10s • Under 15s In terms of our girls’ teams, we are very much looking to expand in the future and hopefully have more teams going forward.

Our youth setup has been successful in integrating players into the first team and into men’s football, and we are confident that this can continue due to the pathways that we have in place. We progress players through all of the different age groups, and also attract some players from other local teams due to our success and popularity. All together, we have around 400 children involved within the club. It’s a fantastic number, which will only grow over the next couple of seasons, as we introduce even more teams to the club setup. We are always keen to welcome new players to both our boys’ and girls’ clubs, regardless of age. If you are interested, please contact Mike Greve through the club website www.seafordtownfc.com
