Welcome ‘One of the best kept secrets in golf ’ When the revered Sir Henry Cotton once said, “Sheringham has a charm that belongs to itself ... and is one of the best kept secrets in golf… Sheringham’s golf course is special,” he was not the first to recognise the unique charm of our Club. Nor was he the last by any means

Regularly recognised among the Top 100 Courses in the country, every year sees us working hard to enhance Members’ and visitors’ enjoyment of our glorious cliff top location. And, every year, our teams manage to achieve just that. Both on the course and in our relaxed and spacious Clubhouse.

A large and varied practice area is on hand to prepare you for the course. Then, once on the course, undulating fairways and fast, true greens will test all standards of golfer; while views along the North Sea coast on one side, and of the local steam railway on the other, offer relaxing counter-points to the game itself.

The Location

D

eclared by Henry Cotton to be “Golf ’s best kept secret,” you will not get much more of a dramatic location than Sheringham Golf Course. Located high on gorse-clad cliff tops between the North Sea and the historic North Norfolk Railway, Sheringham is widely regarded as one of the country’s finest cliff top courses.

Sheringham, a pretty town on the Norfolk coast, with its extensive clean washed sands and shallow waters, is no more than a fiveminute walk from Sheringham’s green - with its cliff top setting, and surrounded by gorse. Set within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty you will feel like the Course has been part of the coastland forever. Views are truly magnificent, from the rolling white waves of the North Sea, on one side, to rattling steam trains and vintage diesels on the other. In fact the westward view from the course, including Blakeney Point is considered by many Members and visitors alike to be the best golf course view in the country.

Our Course

N

ot for nothing does Sheringham Golf Club find its course listed regularly in the Top 100 Courses in the UK. Since its founding in 1891, the course has seen several important innovations in layout and facilities.

In recent years, the pace of change has kept up with the global levels of interest in the game itself, and today’s presentation is testament to the hard work and vision of generations of Presidents, Captains Greenkeepers and Professionals.

Each hole presents its own unique challenge. While the seashore winds and Norfolk gorse add their own spice to every round. Whether rookie or scratch golfer, you will find both challenge and satisfaction on the breathtaking cliff-top course that is Sheringham Golf Club.

The Club’s History

F

ounded in 1891, Sheringham Golf Club has a distinguished golfing history. Over recent years it has hosted major amateur events such as The English Ladies’ Golf Championships, The English Boys Championships and The Senior Ladies’ Home International Matches. The Club regularly hosts Norfolk County events and has also been chosen for the South East Counties Seniors’ Championship.

Many of golf’s most famous names have played here. As long ago as 1908, J.H.E Taylor, A. Massy, J. Braid and H. Vardon, all Open Champions, played a 36 hole competition here. The English Ladies’ Championship final in 1920 was contested at Sheringham between Joyce Wethered and Cecil Leitch. The late 1970s/ early 80s saw such global talents as Gary Player, Lee Trevino, Brian Huggett and Sandy Lyle on the course in Bernard Matthews’ sponsored Pro-Ams.

In addition, celebrities from many walksof-life have also come to relax and enjoy a game of golf on our cliff top course. Many come and go incognito, but among them, Bobby Robson, Steve Davis, Jasper Carrot, Hugh Grant, Nigel Havers and Australian international cricket captain and celebrated broadcaster, Richie Benaud have all been ‘spotted’ over the years. While in 1906, Captain R.F. Scott, R.N. (Scott of the Antarctic) was elected a member. Over the years, our Club has been graced with a host of wonderful visitors and Members – far too many to offer any proper record. We are simply delighted that all appear to have enjoyed it and many have returned frequently.

Take The Course Tour At the back of each tee, engraved stone markers display the hole number and name. The 1st- is “Henry Craske”, named after the secretary of the Club from 1903 to 1973. (Par 4 – 324yds – SI 17) The 2nd, “Town View”, becomes instantly selfexplanatory when standing on the tee. (Par 5 – 544yds – SI 13)

The 3rd, “Lifeboat”, is the first hole along the cliff top, passing the lifeboat house on the sea front below. (Par 4 – 423yds – SI 3) The 4th, “Skelding Hill”, has its tee set on the eastern side of the hill close to the coastguard hut, a longtime feature of the hill. (Par 4 – 329yds – SI 12)

12 | www.sheringhamgolfclub.co.uk

The 5th, “Fulmars”, runs along the cliff top edge, a well-known nesting area for fulmars and other birds. A wayward shot to the right soon disappears over the cliff! (Par 4 – 458yds – SI 1) The 6th, “Old Hythe”, is a short hole with its green opposite the lowest point on the cliffs, where the old lifeboat house once stood. (Par 3 – 210yds – SI 10)

The 7th, “Pop Shop”, is the last of the cliff top holes, named after a non-alcoholic drinks stand that used to sit behind the green. (Par 5 – 550yds – SI 6) The 8th, “Pretty Corner”, is a short hole with gorse prominent by the hole. (Par 3 – 177yds – SI 15)

The 9th, “Upchers”, in the middle of the course, is named in grateful remembrance of the Upcher family – so important in the foundation of the course. (Par 4 – 406yds – SI 8) The 10th, “The Warren”, is set in an area that has always been a favourite one for rabbits (non-golfing variety!). (Par 4 – 468yds – SI 2)

The 11th, “Risebro” marks the long service to the Club of Ernest and Lusher. (Par 3 – 158yds – SI 18) The 12th, “Charity”, is the “second” starting hole on the course. It is on land owned originally by the Poors Charity, from which the lease was purchased in August 1982. (This completed the club’s full ownership of the course.) (Par 4 – 424yds – SI 9)

www.sheringhamgolfclub.co.uk | 13

14 | www.sheringhamgolfclub.co.uk

Take The Course Tour CONTINUED The 13th, “Spinney”, is an uphill hole with abundant gorse and a small group of trees. (Par 4 – 347yds – SI 4) The 14th, “Dead Man’s”, is another hole with gorse and it is rumoured that bodies of shipwrecked sailors were buried in the field beyond. (Par 4 – 380yds – SI 7)

The 15th, “Poppy Line”, is the first hole that runs beside the railway. The name is taken from the preserved steam railway that owns and operates the track to Holt. (Par 3 – 192yds – SI 14)

The 17th, “What Train?”, marks the comment of Joyce Wethered when holing out here to win the 1920 English Ladies Championship held at the Club. (Par 4 – 405yds – SI 5)

The 16th, “The Pit”, has a tee from which the ground slopes down quite sharply; best ‘carried’ with the tee shot. A train puffing gently past on the embankment when teeing up can be off-putting, if rather picturesque! (Par 4 – 342yds – SI 16)

The 18th, “Shannock”, is the final hole and acknowledges the inhabitants of Sheringham, known by their local ‘Shannocks’ nickname. (Par 4 – 421yds – SI 11)

The Clubhouse

T

he current Clubhouse, dating back to 1912 on this site – retains much of its original charm and character. Though continuously refurbished and modernised, it yet manages to offer a sense of stepping back in time a little. As you walk along the main corridor towards the lounge, photographs and other historical artefacts line the walls and bring an immediate feeling for the very special atmosphere of this much-loved venue.

However, despite its history and sense of ‘place’, the Clubhouse today is the heart of a very modern and friendly Club. Throughout the year, Members and visitors mingle comfortably, happily swapping stories of their days along the clifftop. Friendships forged here have resulted in countless cross-Club visits and informal competitions.

groups of 12 or more qualify for our special Society Rate.

During the winter months, a warming open fire greets you as you enter the lounge, while, all-year-round, the adjacent Dining Room is available for a full breakfast - ideally booked in advance, please – with lunches and dinners always on offer to accommodate your round timing. The Dining Room accommodates up to 80 people and Society

Our normal Dress Code is “Smart Casual” unless otherwise stated, but for hot, thirsty and hungry golfers coming straight off the course, our ‘19th Hole’ is the first place to head.

During the summer months, a sheltered patio area is a favourite destination for those wishing to enjoy the sunshine – and often a spot for enjoying the wide range of drinks and lunches available from the bar.

L

adies’ competitions are on Tuesdays and Saturdays when we have our regular medal and stableford competitions sprinkled with friendly games, Club competitions for the various trophies, open and invitation days. There are always lots of opportunities to play golf and socialise.

Ladies have been golfing at Sheringham Golf Club since 1891, however the great age of Sheringham Golf Club for ladies begins nationally with Joyce Wethered’s success on the course in the English Ladies’ Golf Championship in June 1920 when she triumphed over the then reigning Champion Miss Cecil Leitch in a 36 hole final, winning on the 35th hole.

As well as hosting the championship again in 1950 and 1991, Sheringham has been privileged to host many major and county events, the most recent being the Senior Ladies’ Home International matches in September 2010 in which England triumphed over Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

Miss Wethered went on to win five successive English titles and four of the six British championships in which she competed and due to her total concentration, was responsible for the naming of Sheringham’s 17th hole “What Train”, a response she gave when asked why a passing train had not put her off her stroke.

Each special occasion of the year is celebrated at Sheringham with Christmas lunches, a New Year’s Eve dinner dance and Valentine’s Evenings. Watch a spectacular fireworks display on Burns’ night and brush those cold winter chills away with an Old Time Music Hall Dinner and Dance. In summer why not enjoy a social evening out on the patio and in our gardens.
