Welcome With history dating back to 1923, St Ives (Hunts) Golf Club has long maintained its reputation as one of the best golf courses in Cambridgeshire. Now situated in a 230-acre site off the Needingworth Road, the new course was designed by the renowned golf course architect Cameron Sinclair. It was officially opened in August 2010 by Swedish Professional Robert Karlsson, who praised the excellent quality greens, stating, “This course will mature to the highest of quality.” Karlsson was not wrong. St Ives has developed into an exceptional course which offers a seamless blend of challenging fairways and stunning scenery. In fact the course features USGA specification
greens, using ‘velvet bent’ grass, to ensure its putting surfaces are unrivalled. The Championship course features undulating fairways, strategically placed bunkers, and sculptured surrounds meaning no two holes are the same, and provides a test for golfers of all abilities. It is ranked as a par 72. In addition to the testing nature of the golf course, St Ives boasts a flourishing wildlife promoted through the spectacular natural water features around the course. To date 90 different species of birds have been spotted adding to the picturesque setting and imposing clubhouse back drop. The result is a unique golf club where traditional barriers have been overcome, and we welcome you to come along and join us to see what makes us special.

History
During 1947, Huntingdon Golf Club closed and St Ives (Hunts) Golf Club accepted a large number of their members.

www.stivesgolfclub.co.uk
Before the inauguration of St Ives (Hunts) Golf Club, golf had previously been played on a short course in St Audrey’s Lane. On 19th October 1922 the Mayor announced in the local paper that to help promote the general welfare of the town, it was planned to have a ‘very excellent nine-hole golf course’ on the edge of St Ives. A meeting of those interested was held at The Fountain Cafe, on Wednesday, 28th February 1923. The Chair was taken by Mr J Johnson, prime mover and co-founder. He recalled that some months previously, there came onto the market a site known as the Brick Hills with adjoining lands which were deemed suitable for a golf course. Immediate steps were taken to lay out the course. The promoters, who had purchased the land, had become incorporated as ‘St Ives Sports Ltd’ and a handover of the course to a club was negotiated. It was unanimously agreed at this first meeting that those present would resolve themselves into a club to be known as ‘St Ives (Hunts) Golf Club’; though it would take another ten years before the golf club officially took over all assets and loans from St Ives Sports Ltd. A rough, natural course came into play fairly quickly, maintained by mainly volunteers, grazing livestock, and a horse-drawn mower with horses wearing ‘galoshes’ to prevent hoof-marks on course and greens. Single horsepower was replaced by a tractor after five years of sterling service. The club carried on functioning during the war years and the course remained playable throughout using volunteer members and servicemen. In fact, the club did its bit by allowing Home Guard exercises to take place in the clubhouse. During 1947, Huntingdon Golf Club closed and St Ives (Hunts) Golf Club accepted a large number of their members.

History CONTINUED Several alterations took place to both the course and clubhouse from the inauguration in 1923. In 1998 the club proposed an extension to 18 holes. After four frustrating years of negotiations for adjacent land, extending to 18 holes became untenable and, as a developer was in a position go ahead, plans were put in place to site a new course and clubhouse on land on the outskirts of the town, financing the adventure by selling the old course for housing.
Following it’s 90th birthday in 2013, the Club is embarking on an exciting phase but is still maintaining the vision of founders by providing golf amenities which are, in the words of the Mayor in 1922, ‘… to promote the general welfare of the Town’.
Purchase and planning began in earnest in 2002 with construction starting in 2007. In 2010 the club moved to a brand new 18 hole inland links style course on a 230-acre site at Giffords Farm, Needingworth.

About The Course Situated in rural East Anglia, St Ives (Hunts) Golf Club boasts a brand new inland links style course, designed by renowned golf course architect Cameron Sinclair. Built on a 230-acre site at Giffords Farm, Needingworth, the 18 hole course is a first class facility which provides a stern test for golfers of all ages and abilities.
10 www.stivesgolfclub.co.uk
The course features USGA specification greens, one of the first courses in the country to do so, using ‘velvet bent’ grass on the greens to ensure they mature fast and true. The fairways are fully drained and irrigated and have been sand-capped with 40mm of sand to give a links-like ‘feel.’ Buggies are allowed on the course and the buggy paths from tee to fairway are specially constructed grass paths with their own irrigation system. The choice of four tees to each hole allows all golfers to enjoy a unique test. The 18 hole course is ranked as a par 72, with yardages ranging from 5626 to 6758.
With heavy clay soil to contend with, the course was designed and shaped so water would drain into man-made lakes and wetlands. From these the water is pumped into a 25 million litre reservoir, making the club self-sufficient in recycled water. Not only are these lakes and wetlands an integral part of the drainage system, but they provide a significant habitat for wildlife, and have become a signature feature of the new course.
Try not to get too distracted by the lush, well-manicured fairways with your shots from the tee, and be prepared to face some well-protected greens often with testing pin positions. And even if your score ends up a little higher than expected, you will walk off having enjoyed the peace and tranquillity offered by this unique golf course.
Three and a half kilometres of hedging have been planted around the course periphery along with 2,000 gorse plants, some Scots pine and willow. A solitary oak stands resplendent towards the highest point.

Course Tour If you have never played at St Ives (Hunts) Golf Club before you are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the pitfalls that lie in wait, and how to avoid them, by following our hole-by-hole tour. Hole 1- Par 4 – 335 Yards A surprise awaits you from the start off your round. Off the tee the perfect shot would be placed on the left hand side of the fairway, around the 250 yards mark. This will account for the slight right to left-to-right dogleg, and means your second shot is a little easier. When approaching the green, a railway sleeper edged water hazard protects the front and a bunker at the back, make sure you commit to the shot without over-cooking it.
14
Hole 2 – Par 4 – 397 Yards For your opening shot try and avoid the strategically placed bunker around 280 yards from the tee waiting to catch anything which leaks slightly right. This should leave you with around 140 yards to the green. When approaching the green, aiming for the middle is the best chance of a birdie. Watch out if you go over the green though as the green drops off at the back and can leave you with a very tricky pitch shot. Hole 3 – Par 3 – 179 Yards A gem of a par 3 which plays further than you think. With the hole playing slightly uphill and the green sloping from back to front, the perfect tee shot needs to land below the pin position to leave an uphill putt. Going past the pin, especially in the summer months, can leave you a very fast breaking putt.
Hole 4 – Par 5 – 536 Yards The first par 5 on the course and it plays like it too! Well positioned bunkers 280 yards from the left of the tee stop you from cutting corners on the slight dog leg to the left. The green slopes from back to front and quite steeply from right to left, so aim right of the pin to allow the ball to fall towards it. Hole 5 – Par 4 – 407 Yards The ideal tee shot is on the left hand side of the fairway, around 250 yards deep. This means you miss the two intimidating bunkers placed on the right hand side of the hole, and leaves around 150 yards to the green.
Hole 6 – Par 4 – 386 Yards Hole Six plays a true dogleg to the left. From the tee try and leave yourself with around 140 yards to the green. The green slopes from back to front, and it’s best not to go long as the green drops severely at the back, leaving you with a return chip shot from well below the level of the green. Hole 7 – Par 3 – 182 Yards A tough par 3 with a green protected with bunkers all around. Once on the green the putting surface can provide you with some severe breaking putts if you are putting from the left or right hand side of the green, take your time and be happy to walk off with par.
The green is huge, so aim for the middle to shorten the length of your putt. But get the wrong club and you could have a 70 foot putt on your hands!
15
Course Tour CONTINUED Hole 8 – Par 5 – 525 Yards With two well-placed bunkers ready to capture anything wayward, the ideal tee shot is just on the cusp of the right hand bunker. This leaves 250 yards to the green and is in a tempting position to go for the green in two for the low handicap players. Hole 9 – Par 4 – 436 Yards Double trouble this one. Normally playing into a wind and with water all down the right hand side and two strategically placed bunkers on the left of the fairway, your opening shot needs to be perfect. When approaching the green be sure not to miss on the right hand side as the green sharply drops off to some sleepers, if you get behind these it can be difficult to chip back on to the green.
16
Hole 10 – Par 4 – 372 Yards Longer hitters should have no issues here, and if struck true a solid tee shot can mean finding the green in two. When on the green it’s best to leave yourself short of the pin to avoid going over the back of the green, as the ground slopes away providing an awkward chip back. Avoid the bunkers to the left and right hand side of the green as both of these hazards will provide any golfer with a testing up and down. Hole 11 – Par 5 – 557 Yards The first par five of the back nine, and it’s a long one. Be sure to carry the ditch that cuts across the fairway and avoid the bunker on the right from the tee to leave you with a fairly straight forward lay-up shot for your second. In the middle of the green there is a second tier so be sure to get your approach shot onto the correct level to provide you with the best opportunity for a birdie.
Hole 12 – Par 3 – 147 Yards A short par 3 but with narrow green and a collection of bunkers accuracy is key. Make sure you avoid the bunker in front of the green as it’s very deep and needs an excellent shot to get out! There can be some tricky pins on this green. If the pin is back left then play for the middle as any shot slightly short will hit the bank and possibly end up in the water hazard. Hole 13 – Par 4 – 304 Yards While this is a relatively short par 4, with a very tempting distance for the longer hitter, be careful as only exceptional shots prove rewarding. The green slopes drastically from left to right and can provide some roller coaster putts that will certainly put nerves into any golfer’s putting stroke.
Hole 14 – Par 4 – 389 Yards Measuring 389 yards and all up hill, this hole is a true challenge. The ideal tee shot is placed level with the fairway bunker on the left, leaving about 130 yards to the green. The key to this hole is placing your second shot in the right place and on the right level. If the pin is at the front it’s best to be short of the pin leaving an uphill putt. If the pin is at the back, then leaving the ball to the right of the hole always provides a slightly easier putt. Hole 15 – Par 4 – 390 Yards Providing a panoramic view of the entire course, Hole Fifteen offers stunning views and stern challenges in equal measures. Off the tee it’s best to hit the left hand side of the fairway and leave yourself around 140 yards to the green. The green is protected at the front so ‘club up.’

“Nothing but praise for the way I have been treated - Mrs Loxton. Cambs. 2019
Course Tour CONTINUED Hole 16 – Par 3 – 187 Yards The last par 3 of the course and certainly the toughest. The hole plays steadily uphill and leads to a two tiered green. The key to this hole is to make sure you are on the right level as any shot coming up short can leave a long putt up a very steep slope. Hole 17 – Par 4 – 452 Yards A dog leg left, the key to this hole is to avoid the bunkers left and right as both provide very tricky shots onto the green. Take one club more than you think, as the ball will stop quickly on the green as it slopes from back to front.
Hole 18 – Par 5 – 557 Yards A terrific par 5 to finish that provides a tempting grand stand finish for the long hitter. The key to a strong finish is to leave yourself with a third shot around 120 yards before the fairway starts to narrow. If you decide to go for it in two, make sure you can carry the ball to the green and aim towards the right. Watch out for the hidden bunker at the back of the green as all shots from here are downhill to any pin location. Finish with a gross or nett par here and you will walk off the course happy.

At St Ives we understand that not only are there many different golfing styles which can result in a good shot, but that golfers themselves can come in all shapes and sizes. Therefore we don`t try to teach every golfer the same swing, we treat each player as an individual. Different strength, height, flexibility, sporting background, frequency of play are just a few of the differences that make you special. There are some very valuable core principles that can really help you to improve. Our goal is to teach these principles as they apply to you and then coach you to blend them in to your game. We want to help because we care about your golf.
Our teaching team also offer on-course tuition, where course management and the tactical side to the game can be addressed in real time. Learning the correct thought process can often be an eye-opening and rewarding experience even for experienced players, and will naturally lead to better scores. At St Ives Golf Club we have outstanding practice and coaching facilities. Chosen by Titleist as the home of their National Fitting Centre, the range features a modern contemporary design. The Teaching Bay includes: • GC2 monitor system at St Ives GASP Lab. The very latest computerised video coaching equipment as used by many National governing bodies and the PGA.
• GC2 Launch Monitor and Simulator. As seen on SKY SPORTS golf coverage. • E Book online lesson solution. Allows your swing videos and notes to be saved to your own account which you can view at your leisure. In addition we have very good short game practice facilities to hone your putting, chipping, pitching and bunker play. We offer a range of tuition packages, but all bundles can be adjusted to suit each individual player. Custom Fittings There has been a growing realisation in recent times that, along with professional coaching, golf equipment should allow each player to make the most of whatever level of natural talent they possess. Clubs bought off the shelf will be of a standard specification, but unfortunately golfers are not – we come in all shapes and sizes! The reality is that some golfers could have a perfectly acceptable technique but still be held back because their clubs are not entirely suited to their swing. This is where custom fitting comes in.
We understand the importance of being fitted correctly, whether for a glove, a pair of shoes, or ultimately for a set of golf clubs. Customising the clubs according to an individual’s physical characteristics will help them to address the ball with the correct posture and develop a better swing plane. Without doubt this results in better scores. So why not take advantage of our in-house qualified Titleist Surefitter Specialist! Custom fitting costs less than you think, and can bring about a dramatic improvement in ball striking, so contact the Pro Shop for more information.
Custom fitting is a relatively new phenomenon which allows a set of clubs to be married with each golfer’s physique and swing characteristics.
