STOVER GOLF CLUB Welcome
S
et between the Southern slopes of the Dartmoor National Park and the ancient market town of Newton Abbot, Stover Golf Club is renowned as one of the premier parkland courses in the South West. You will always receive a warm welcome at Stover Golf Club whether you’re a visitor looking for a relaxing day’s golf, a society group looking for a well maintained and superbly presented course or a member looking to join an active and vibrant club. The 18-hole, par 69 course originally designed by “5 times Open Champion - James Braid” measures 5,952 yards from the white tees and offers a fair challenge to golfers of all abilities. The course consists of two loops of nine holes both starting and finishing at the clubhouse and offers easy walking through narrow tree lined fairways to subtly contoured greens. Golfers are also treated to outstanding scenery with a wide variety of holes including mature trees, streams and picturesque ponds. A unique feature of the golf course is the flatness of the terrain and the easy walking through the silver birches and flat lush
fairways. Devon is generally a hilly county and Stover must be one of the flattest courses in the county. The clubhouse sits adjacent to Liverton Brook, with its trout and bird-life; and enjoys a superb view of the 1st hole. The friendly bar and catering staff will ensure that your liquid refreshments and meal requirements are catered for with a wide selection of drinks and hot or cold snacks or meals. Facilities also include well equipped changing rooms and showers, a well-stocked bar and excellent catering. On the golfing side, there is a practice putting green, pitching area, practice nets, together with buggy and trolley hire. One of the main features is a very well stocked shop run by an outstanding team of PGA professionals who have both indoor and outdoor coaching facilities. The club holds numerous Open Competitions throughout the year and for those looking to join there are men’s, ladies, senior and junior sections as well as an outstanding academy to introduce you into the game.

STOVER GOLF CLUB History
A
lthough the present Golf Club dates from 1931 the origins of the Club can be traced back to the last century when Major Harold St Maur of Stover House (now Stover School) created a golf course on his own estate in 1894. This course was originally private for the pleasure of the Major and his friends. However, such was the interest in the game that after three years the course was opened to the public and eventually became known as “The Stover and MidDevon Golf Club”. Records indicate that it was a 9-hole course situated on both sides of the Newton Abbot / Bovey Tracey road. The club was founded in 1899 and as the course formed part of the Stover Estate, it was of necessity interwoven with the Stover pheasant shoot. The original Head Gamekeepers cottage eventually became the Club Steward’s residence and the pheasant rearing shed is still in existence today, now used as
a trolley store. The first recorded entry in the Minutes of the Devon County Golf Union in 1912 indicated that the Club was represented by a Colonel Goad. Whilst there is little documented history for the period from 1900 to the outbreak of the First World War an extract from the Ladies Golf Union Handbook of 1914 indicates that it was then an 18-hole course of 4,988 yards. Golf continued on this course until the Great War 1914-18, the outbreak of which heralded the demise of the Stover and Mid-Devon Golf Club when the ground was given up to agricultural purposes and the important task of producing food for the nation.

STOVER GOLF CLUB History CONTINUED In 1923 an attempt was made to create another course on the land to the south side of the town. Although this reached an advanced state, nothing happened after a May announcement in the Devon and Exeter Gazette and that the scheme was not to proceed.
Eight years later on 5th March 1931, a meeting was held by a syndicate of local businessmen to set up the new club, James Braid having already visited and planned the course. With J.R. Stutt as his ever-faithful constructor, nine holes were open for play by 1st May and the rest by the end of the year. The course measured just over 6,400 yard and remained intact until WW2 arrived and in 1942 a compulsory purchase for the north half of the course, holes 1-8 was issued for an American hospital. The 9-hole course gained two new fields in 1945, fourteen holes were in play by 1947 and more meant the completion of all eighteen by 1949. Ironically, the club was asked in 1948 whether it wished to have its original land returned, or £4,000. It took the later. A Polish Resettlement Camp was then established. Of Braid’s course four holes remain. The present course is shorter and tighter than Braid’s original course.

STOVER GOLF CLUB About the Club
T
he course is set in parkland with some of the prettiest golf holes in Devon. Extensive mature woodlands and water feature on a number of holes. The 5952 yards, par 69 provides an interesting and enjoyable challenge to golfers of all abilities. The Front-9 offers a number of feature holes, with recent improvements adding to its attraction and challenge. The Back-9, is narrower and requires good course management and with again the recent additions adding to its charm. Another feature of the course is the easy walking over a relatively flat course which many of our members enjoy. In recent times the course has had many positive plaudits from both members and visitors alike and some say it is in the best condition they have ever seen it which is something that spurs us on to improve further. The club operates a significant investment programme for green equipment
in order to keep the course in as good a condition as possible. The club has many golfing sections which run competitions and social functions as well as many various roll ups, we are always happy to set up with a game, just contact the office or professionals shop. We always try our best to make everyone welcome at the club whatever your reason is for visiting. The cosy lounge, adjacent to Liverton Brook, with its trout and bird-life; enjoys a superb view of the 1st hole. The friendly bar and catering staff will ensure that your liquid refreshments and meal requirements are catered for with a wide selection of drinks and hot or cold snacks or meals. Plan ahead for your visit to Stover Golf Club and make the most of your round with our course planner available from the Pro Shop.

STOVER GOLF CLUB Course Tour Hole 1 - Par 4 – 415 Yards The first hole is 415 yards, par 4, with a relatively wide fairway, but there are trees, deep rough and bunkers to catch the wayward drive. The second shot to the green is uphill making the hole play longer than its yardage. Hole 2 - Par 3 - 178 Yards The next is a well-bunkered 178 yards par 3, slightly downhill where only total accuracy will find the putting surface.
• 12
Hole 3 - Par 4 - 377 Yards The third, at 377 yards, par 4, is an uphill dog-leg left with a generous fairway leading to a treacherous green tilting from the left to right. Hole 4 - Par 4 - 379 Yards Now we have an extended par 4, at 379 yards, with a picturesque pond just short of the green. A large oak tree dominates the left-hand side of the fairway; a bunker protects the right-hand side of the fairway. A good tee shot is required, followed by a tricky shot from a downhill lie.
Hole 5 - Par 3 - 210 Yards The 5th hole is our longest par 3 measuring 210 yards. A big straight tee shot is necessary to reach the green thus avoiding the row of mature trees down the left hand side of the fairway and bunkers on the right hand side. Hole 6 - Par 4 - 314 Yards Most players should find the 6th a fairly easy par 4 at 314 yards. Trees and gorse on the right hand side will catch the off line tee shot.
Hole 7 - Par 3 - 120 Yards A truly beautiful 120 yards par 3. Played through a funnel of trees to a small green surrounded by bunkers. Club selection is important. Hole 8 - Par 5 - 538 Yards The par 5, 538 yards, 8th hole is the longest on the course and requires an accurate tee shot through a funnel of trees to a reasonably generous fairway. A ditch ‘Out of Bounds’ on the right side runs the length of the fairway, whilst on the left there are many trees to catch the poor shot. A strategically placed water feature on the right hand side of the fairway makes the player think about club selection for their second shot.
• 13
STOVER GOLF CLUB Course Tour Hole 9 - Par 4 - 380 Yards An excellent par 4 of 380 yards completes the front 9 holes and brings you back to the Clubhouse. With trees right and left off the tee, the scenic Liverton Brook just short of the green comes into play for the first time for your approach to the green. Do you go for it or lay up? Hole 10 - Par 4 - 325 Yards The back 9 holes starts with the par 4, 325 yards, 10th from the tee directly outside the Clubhouse window. If that isn’t intimidating enough, a very narrow fairway with rough and the Liverton Brook on the right hand side serves notice of the accuracy required for the last 9 holes.
• 14
Hole 11 - Par 4 - 362 Yards The 11th, stroke index 1 is 362 yards, par 4. A narrow fairway with trouble both right and left. Trees and rough down both sides with the added problem of the river on the left hand side. The small green is protected by bunkers on both the left and right. Hole 12 - Par 4 - 344 Yards An elevated tee seems to make you more aware of the ‘Out of Bounds’ on the right and the trees, river and open ditch on the left. Not a long hole at 344 yards, but tricky with the water to the left and rear of the green.
Hole 13 - Par 3 - 162 Yards The 13th is a par 3 with the green encircled by trees and a bunker on the left and right. The river will catch the mis-hit shot and swirling winds can make the club selection difficult. Not an easy green to read, particularly if you are putting across it! Hole 14 - Par 5 - 500 Yards The 14th hole starts with a tee shot through an avenue of trees and over the river. Having successfully driven, the hole dog-legs right gently uphill to a large green. It’s important to keep to the left of the fairway to open up the green for your third shot, anything to the right blocks the green out, the only way directly to it is over some tall trees.
Hole 15 - Par 3 - 191 Yards The last par 3 at 191 yards is downhill from an elevated tee. Dead ground immediately in front of the green can be misleading and bunkers in front and on both sides of the green will trap the errant tee shot. Hole 16 - Par 4 - 386 Yards A good tee shot across the river onto a narrow fairway is essential because there is trouble on both sides. Keep the ball to the right hand side of this gentle dog-leg left which will give a view of the green for your approach shot. The green has a gentle tilt from right to left.

STOVER GOLF CLUB Course Tour CONTINUED Hole 17 - Par 4 - 369 Yards The tee shot on the 17th down a narrow fairway bordered with trees on the right, a dense copse and draining channel protects the left. Bunkers on the left and a water feature on the right of the green shouldn’t affect a decent second shot and having made the putting surface a birdie or par is within your grasp.
Hole 18 - Par 4 - 409 Yards The 18th is a great finishing hole, which dog-legs left. An accurate tee shot to the centre/right hand side of the fairway will give you a good look at the tiered green with large bunkers on each side. Trees down the left hand side and ‘Out of Bounds’ on the right. A par is a good score here to finish your round.

STOVER GOLF CLUB Health Benefits
P
laying golf can add five years to your life, according to researchers.
People who play golf live longer, a major study has found, as it shows the game helps prevent 40 major chronic diseases. Researchers reviewed 5,000 studies into golf and wellbeing and found the sport has physical and mental health benefits for people of all ages and can even increase life expectancy by five years. Balance and muscle endurance in older people are improved by playing golf and it is also likely to improve cardiovascular, respiratory and metabolic health. Golfing could also help those who suffer chronic diseases including heart disease, type2 diabetes, colon / breast cancer and stroke, as well as helping reduce the risk of anxiety, depression and dementia researchers found.
Lead researcher Dr Andrew Murray, from the physical activity for health research centre at the University of Edinburgh, said “Evidence suggests golfers live longer than non-golfers, enjoying improvements in cholesterol levels, body composition, wellness, self-esteem and self-worth. Given the sport can be played by the very young to the very old, this demonstrates a wide variety of health benefits for people of all ages.” Dr Murray also said “We have to get away from the idea golf’s only a rich man’s sport – 78 percent of the courses across the world are available for the public to play on, not just members.” The findings were published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.
