Welcome

T

ucked away amongst quiet residential roads, Sundridge Park is a jewel in the suburbs of Bromley. Easily accessible from central London and the M25, we are less than seven miles, as the crow flies, from the City of London, and claim to be the world’s closest 36-hole golf club to a major metropolitan centre.

The friendly atmosphere, exceptional service and comfortable surroundings of our clubhouse will make all guests feel at home, and provide a wonderful place to relax and socialise.

The Club was founded in 1901 and proudly boasts two magnificent championship courses, maintained in first class condition. The East is an Open pre-qualifying course and is fair, but challenging; newcomers are often inspired by the quality with its true, consistent greens.

Great courses, brilliant food, well prepared & stylish presentation, a must for golfers. S. Clark

Of equal quality, the West is truly testing and enjoys commanding, panoramic views of London’s famous landmarks, encompassing Canary Wharf to the East and the Wembley Stadium Arch to the West. www.spgc.co.uk

We extend a warm welcome to visitors and societies alike, with packages to suit all.

HISTORY

T

he courses at Sundridge Park Golf Club derive from an estate which has been sought after since feudal times. They surround a Grade I Listed mansion and the landscape, designed by one of the greatest landscape architects of the 18th Century, Humphry Repton, is included in the Register of Parks and Gardens of Specific Historical Interest in England. In the summer of 1901 about a dozen far-seeing Bromley men conceived the idea of a golf club for their town. With only the offer of a lease from Sir Samuel Scott – the latest in a long line of people to have owned the estate – for approximately 125 acre of land, a Committee set about raising the money and they formed Sundridge Park Golf Club on October 12th, 1901. The first meeting of the Club was held on December 4th, 1901 at the Bell Hotel,

Bromley. Three days later Jack Randall was appointed Club Professional and Greenkeeper. Advised by Willie Park Jnr and Peter Paxton, Mr Milne planned an 18-hole course for the Gentlemen (the West) and a 9-hole course for the Ladies. A clubhouse was erected for the sum of £3,156. Play commenced on the 18-hole course in 1902, but the official opening took place on April 25th, 1903, when a large marquee was erected and a grand banquet was attended by the first Club President, Sir Samuel Scott MP, and the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. A. J. Balfour. More than 2,000 people attended. The first match was between James Braid and Alex Herd which ended in a draw, both going round in 76. The ball used by Braid now rests in the Club trophy cabinet. Initial proposals for a second 18-hole course did not come to fruition and the onset of the Great War dealt a severe blow to Sundridge Park, as it did the whole

www.spgc.co.uk

country. The Club, however, regained its feet and was thriving come the 1920s. It was to the fore in the formation of the Kent Golf Union and among its most notable players were the Beck family, with John being crowned British Amateur Champion and Mrs Beck winning the Kent County Championship four times. Sundridge Park amalgamated with Elmstead Woods Golf Course in 1928 and a new 18-hole course was designed by Campbell and Hutchinson. In the spring of 1931 a new lease was negotiated to cover further land and the reconstruction of the existing (West) Course. Work also started on a second (East) course which was opened on April 18th, 1931 with a match involving Abe Mitchell, Henry Cotton, Percy Alliss and Alf Padgham. The reconstructed West Course was opened on May 20th, 1933 and the following year Padgham became the Club Professional. He was to win many events, most notably in 1936 he won the Open Championship and subsequently brought the famous Claret Jug back to Sundridge Park. Amongst his many successes he also featured heavily in three successive Ryder Cup teams. Our courses were heavily bombed during the Second World War and a V2 German rocket caused extensive damage to the Clubhouse and surrounding properties with several fatalities. The Club was also informed of the death of

Major Sir Samuel Scott, who had been Club President for more than 40 years. From 1947 forward, the resumption of major competitions brought several charity tournaments to Sundridge, with Alf Padgham, Dai Rees, Bobby Locke, Bill Shankland and Norman Von Nida participating. The Ladies’ 50th anniversary brought the famous Wanda Morgan and Bridget Jackson to the Club. Meanwhile, the Prime Minister (and MP for Bromley), Harold Macmillan, regularly visited the Club and was elected a life member. In 1976 the Club’s negotiators concluded the purchase of the land and buildings for the sum of £200,000. Sundridge Park was therefore the master of its own destiny. Work has continued to improve an already exceptional golfing experience for members and in the 1990s a bore hole project was completed which led to full irrigation of both courses. Golfing success has continued into the new millennium, with some of the highlights being victory for our ladies in the Mail on Sunday Team Classic (entered by over 2000 teams) on no less than 2 occasions, and an incredible achievement by Club Member Alfie Plant to win the Silver Medal as the leading amateur at the 2017 Open Championship held at Royal Birkdale. HISTORY

Sundridge Park is believed to be the only club in the world to have had an Open Champion and the leading Amateur golfer at The Open in its ranks. And what does our club crest signify? The white horse in the bottom right corner represents the county of Kent and the scallop shell the diocese of Rochester. The broom in the top left stands for the borough of Bromley, the Sun represents the area of ‘Sundridge’ which formed the Sundridge Mansion Estate, and the ravens following through the centre signify the River Ravensbourne that cuts through the East Course.

THE BUTTEN BOYS

S

undridge Park was once home to an elite team of British pros who were brought together in the early 60s.

Ernest Butten, an innovator and entrepreneur, had not taken up golf until the age of 60, but within a few years he had got his handicap down to a very respectable six. Butten was frustrated by lack of British success at our own Open Championship and was determined to use some of his considerable resources in an attempt to break the American stranglehold on the event. He believed that anything was possible, if you had the right training and were given the time and facilities to improve. In 1963 he decided to create an elite squad of the four players who showed the most potential to work under the wing of 1951 Open winner Max Faulkner. And so the ‘Butten Boys’ were born.

www.spgc.co.uk

Tommy Horton, Tony Martin, Jim McAlister and Sandy Wilson made up the ‘A’ team and they had an exclusive practice ground created for them. Progress was slow, however, and Horton was then joined by Brian Barnes, Iain Clark, Mike Ingham and Alan Ibberson. The arrangement lasted for four years, but the continued lack of success brought it to a premature end. It was a worthy dream and the like of which we shall never see again. The overgrown remains of the practice grounds, complete with the old metal bag stands, still exist in the woods behind the 8th tee on the West Course. In 2018 the Club held the inaugural ‘Butten Boys Trophy’; an 18-hole competition open to all members. Brian Barnes returned to the Club to present the first winner, Thomas Gamble.

OUR COURSES THE EAST COURSE

A

short walk down the hill from the Clubhouse takes you to the 1st tee of our Open Championship pre-qualifying course. With a par of 71, The East was used as a venue for Open qualifying from 1992 to 1997. The course is also the stage for the first 36 holes of the Waterford Trophy; a 72-hole England Order of Merit and World Amateur Golf Ranking event. The East is a testing but fair challenge, newcomers are inspired by both its quality of design and playing condition.

T

he West Course opens with a yawning par 4 of some 423 yards with a magnificent panorama leading down to the River Quaggy. The West has its own unique character, a truly testing but beautiful par 69. The contours are incorporated into the design to create many challenging approach shots. Mainly tree lined, but with some breath-taking views of London’s famous landmarks, the West Course leaves a lasting impression and a yearning to return.

Sundridge Park Golf Club | 13

EAST COURSE HOLE GUIDE

6560 yards from the back tees

• Hole 1, 396 yards, par 4 A tee shot struck down the right side will usually follow the contours to finish in the middle of the fairway. A water hazard crosses the fairway some 25 yards short of the green, which has a gentle left-to-right bias. • Hole 2, 388 yards, par 4 An uphill tee shot should favour the right side of the fairway to provide the best line to the green. Bunkers guard both sides of the extensive putting surface, which falls from back to front. • Hole 3, 519 yards, par 5 An inviting downhill tee shot should finish left of centre to provide the optimum line in. The River Ravensbourne crosses the fairway 130 yards short of the green; lay up for a long third shot or go for it if you dare! A green that slopes from left to right awaits your ball.

14 | Sundridge Park Golf Club

• Hole 4, 414 yards, par 4 A straight tee shot is required to avoid the line of willow trees and meandering river to the right and a substantial fairway bunker on the left. The elevated green can cause difficulties with a steep gradient at the front to halt the progress of anything short... but woe betide going long on this hole. • Hole 5, 191 yards, par The elevated tee gives you a clear sight of the challenge ahead. With the River Ravensbourne guarding the front and right side of the green, and a bunker to the left, the only way is straight! The green slopes gently towards the river. • Hole 6, 489 yards, par 5 Anything left of the green will find a watery grave and going long will require a silky touch recovery to get close to the hole.

www.spgc.co.uk

Hole 6

• Hole 7, 412 yards, par 4 This tough par 4 rises away from the tee to an undulating fairway where an awkward stance is a real possibility. Left side of the fairway will give you the best view of the narrow and well-guarded putting surface. The green runs away from front to back, making a well-struck approach essential if you wish to hold the green. • Hole 8, 406 yards, par 4 An enticing drive but a sharp dogleg right means trouble could await a ball hit too long and straight. The green runs gently away from you, and with a subtle valley down the middle a straight putt is rare..

www.spgc.co.uk

Hole 5

• Hole 9, 175 yards, par 3 An innocuous-looking par 3, but miss the left-to-right sloping green at your peril. The refreshment hut awaits the halfway leaders and losers!

An enticing drive but a sharp dogleg right means trouble could await a ball hit too long and straight. Sundridge Park Golf Club | 15

EAST COURSE HOLE GUIDE

Hole 13

• Hole 10, 377 yards, par 4 With trees left and bunkers right, it is a test of nerves to find the plateau lying beyond the ridge on this demanding dogleg. Further bunkering makes for a testing approach shot to the subtly sloping green.

• Hole 13, 510 yards, par 5 From a tight teeing ground an inviting fairway leads downhill towards the River Chinbrook. Tee shots finishing on the right side will provide the best angle to attack the elevated green, which slopes appreciably from left to right.

• Hole 11, 134 yards, par 3 The shortest hole on the course but a cluster of greenside bunkers and some demanding borrows can make this par 3 far from simple. Middle of the green is the safest option here.

• Hole 14, 429 yards, par 4 From a tight teeing ground an inviting fairway leads downhill towards the River Ravensbourne. Tee shots finishing on the right side will provide the best angle to attack the elevated green, which slopes appreciably from left to right.

• Hole 12, 386 yards, par 4 A tee shot landing on the right side of the fairway will usually follow the contours to finish in the middle. A large fairway bunker is a potential danger for the longer hitters. The extensive green is well protected by bunkers and has a general slope from right to left.

• Hole 15, 182 yards, par 3 A demanding par 3 played to an elevated green. Be sure to take enough club to reach the plateau as anything catching the front of the slope will come back towards you. Once on the green the hard work begins, with a challenging two putt from anywhere.

16 | Sundridge Park Golf Club

www.spgc.co.uk

Hole 14

• Hole 16, 357 yards, par 4 A sharp dogleg left where only the long and brave hitters attempt to cut the corner. Beware the hidden bunker at the crook of the dogleg. The narrow green is well guarded by bunkers on both sides; a general right-to-left fall can make putting difficult. • Hole 17, 345 yards, par 4 A trio of fairway bunkers await an over-hit ball on the left side of this dogleg and only the longest hitters will attempt to shave the corner above the right-hand tree line. Centre of the fairway should leave you with a straightforward approach to a fairly flat green.

www.spgc.co.uk

Hole 9

• Hole 18, 447 yards, par 4 Left side of the fairway leaves you the clearest route to the green but beware the pond, take account of the elevated green, avoid the greenside bunkers and prepare for a vicious left-to-right swing on your putt! Undoubtedly one of the toughest finishing holes in the country.

Once on the green the hard work begins, with a challenging two-putt from anywhere.

Sundridge Park Golf Club | 17

WEST COURSE HOLE GUIDE 6017 yards from the back tees

• Hole 1, 422 yards, par 4 An inviting first tee shot to a fairway leading downhill to the River Quaggy. Left of centre will provide the best route to an elevated green that generally slopes from back to front. • Hole 2, 378 yards, par 4 The tee shot on this tight par 4 should land down the right half of the fairway, allowing for the natural contours to work the ball back to the centre. Three bunkers guard the left side of this lengthy and subtly sloping green. • Hole 3, 173 yards, par 3 Fire through an avenue of trees towards your target. Beware the two deep bunkers that protect the front portion of this gently sloping green..

18 | Sundridge Park Golf Club

• Hole 4, 338 yards, par 4 “Straight” is the key word here. The incline of the fairway and the narrowness of the green make for a tougher challenge than the yardage alone would suggest. The front third of the green slopes sharply back towards you, making distance control essential. • Hole 5, 141 yards, par 3 There’s no room for error on this tricky par 3. Try to avoid the greenside bunkers on the left but be warned, anything finishing right will leave you the quickest of downhill chips. • Hole 6, 521 yards, par 5 From an elevated tee the fairway bears right and downhill towards the green. The drive should be directed down the left side of the fairway to provide the optimum lie in. Rhododendron bushes await an over-hit shot to the left-to-right sloping green. www.spgc.co.uk

• Hole 7, 167 yards, par 3 With trees to the left and one bunker guarding the front right of the narrow green, you will do well to find the putting surface which gently rises from front to back. • Hole 8, 400 yards, par 4 A daunting tee shot over a wide chasm is required to find the fairway. Favour the right-hand side to give the best angle into the elevated green. Warning: anything landing on the front edge will roll back to the fringe; anything long could leave you one of the trickiest shots Sundridge Park has to offer. This hole is stroke index 1 for good reason!

www.spgc.co.uk

• Hole 9, 404 yards, par 4 You may not be able to see the downhill fairway, but the views over the City of London towards the Wembley Arch are priceless. Aim close to the right tree line, or take a shorter club to avoid running out of fairway on this gentle leftto- right dogleg. The green falls away, and requires a well-struck shot to hold the ball on the putting surface.

Try to avoid the greenside bunkers on the left but be warned, anything finishing right will leave you the quickest of downhill chips. Sundridge Park Golf Club | 19

WEST COURSE HOLE GUIDE • Hole 10, 428 yards, par 4 Strike down the right side to allow the lie of the land to bring the ball back to the centre; a fairway bunker at 200 yards awaits anything heading left. The green slopes viciously from left to right making the position of your approach key for a goodscore. • Hole 11, 448 yards, par 5 The drive should favour the left side on this short par 5 to allow for the gentle contours to draw the ball right. Strategically placed fairway and greenside bunkers mean correct club selection is important. The green rises substantially from front to back, making side and downhill putts a treacherous prospect.

20 | Sundridge Park Golf Club

Hole 6

• Hole 12, 386 yards, par 4 A tee shot right of centre laying up from the fairway bunker is the safest play on this innocent-looking par 4. The green has subtle borrows but surrounding slopes, bushes and bunkers can make even the innocent a guilty scoring prospect. • Hole 13, 390 yards, par 4 From an elevated tee the River Quaggy is clearly visible and lies a tempting distance for the longer hitters to take on. The fairway rises to an elevated green sloping considerably from back to front with two greenside bunkers guarding the front edge. This is truly a classic golf hole.

www.spgc.co.uk

Hole 9

• Hole 14, 176 yards, par 3 Fire your tee shot uphill towards a two-tiered green that rises from front to back. Distance control is everything, especially when the flag is on the lower tier and be prepared for employing the softest of touches with yourputter!

• Hole 17, 231 yards, par 3 Statistically the toughest of the par 3s. The small and distant green falls sharply from front to back and from left to right, making the journey to the putting surface only half the battle!

• Hole 15, 398 yards, par 4 Drive down the centre of the fairway to avoid the two obscured bunkers and heavy rough to the right. This will leave a good angle to attack the green which has a subtle shoulder running along the left side that feeds the ball right.

• Hole 18, 362 yards, par 4 Fly the pond to find the right side of the fairway for the best line in. It’s uphill all the way to a devilish green guarded by four bunkers. There is out of bounds left, right and long… this finishing hole is not for the faint-hearted!

• Hole 16, 262 yards, par 4 Risk and reward is the name of the game here - the longer the drive the tighter the hole becomes, but an excellent birdie, or eagle, opportunity awaits for those who get it right. The green has a gentle fall from back to front.

PRACTICE FACILITIES

S

undridge Park Golf Club is committed to providing the best facilities possible to enable members the chance to become as proficient at the game as their talent and application allows.

For those looking to practice their short game there is the ‘Wedge Range Challenge’ with target markers - master this and you’re sure to achieve lower scores on the course! A dedicated short game area sits alongside the range; providing first rate facilities for sharpening up your chipping, pitching and bunker play.

As well as the highly-regarded tuition on offer from our professional team there are several areas where players can work on ingraining new swing thoughts or turning previously weaker areas of the game into strengths.

There are dedicated chipping and putting greens right in front of the clubhouse. If time is at a premium, there are also practice nets, affording the opportunity to get loose before beginning a round.

Pride of place goes to the driving range which is just five minutes from the Pro Shop, near to the 12th hole on the East Course. Members, guests and those taking tuition are able to buy a range ball token from the Pro Shop and can hit off both turf or mats. The range is long enough to hit every club in the bag, including a driver.

BECOMING A MEMBER

D

oes the thought of belonging to an historic but progressive golf club with a friendly, welcoming membership, a lively social calendar, excellent clubhouse facilities and two majestic 18-hole golf courses appeal?

Adult applicants would ideally have the support of a proposer and a seconder, who can endorse their application and give guidance on all aspects of Club Membership. Application forms are available from the Club office or can be downloaded from the website. Completed forms should be returned with a covering letter giving a few details about yourself, your reasons for wishing to join Sundridge Park, and a little bit about your golfing history. Letters from your proposer and seconder (if you have any) should also support your application. A handicap certificate from your current club (if you have one) or at least three scorecards (preferably from Sundridge Park) for handicap purposes should also be included. Adult applicants new to the area and without sponsors will be required to play a round of golf with a Board or Committee member. They must also be able to provide confirmation of www.spgc.co.uk

handicap by way of a recognised handicap certificate or, at least, 3 scorecards signed by a player with a recognised CONGU handicap. The maximum handicap for Full Adult Membership is 20 (men) and 28 (ladies). For 7-Day Restricted membership the maximum handicaps are 25 and 35 respectively. The maximum handicap for 5-day membership is 27 for Men, or 35 for ladies. Both categories can be used as a route towards Full Membership. An entrance fee is payable, which is used to help the Club maintain the exceptional standards for which it has become renowned. Both this and the annual fee can be paid by direct debit. The Club offers very attractive rates to our junior players and there are also ‘Intermediate’ and ‘Mid’ categories to help ease the transition into Full Membership for those golfers between the ages of 18 and 34. Your completed application form, covering letter and letters from your proposers and sponsors should be sent to: The General Manager, Sundridge Park Golf Club, Garden Road, Bromley, Kent, BR 1 3NE. Members’ GOLF

M

embers at Sundridge Park enjoy a full programme of competitions throughout the year, both playing against each other and at home and away against other clubs. Fixtures, matches and trophies are always keenly contested and while it is always nice to win, ensuring the spirit of the game is upheld is of paramount importance. • Men The Men’s Section enter the county’s premier knockout competitions such as the Kent Amateur Foursomes, an 18- hole inter-club knockout competition featuring two pairs from each club and the Top Club 4BBB handicap knockout, both organised by the Kent Golf Union.

36 | Sundridge Park Golf Club

The Club is proud to have been one of the seven founder members of the Association of South Eastern Golf Clubs. This group, with northern Kent as its geographical focus, now features 16 of the area’s top clubs. Each club enters one team into each of the knock-out competitions run by the Association, with the scratch competition, known as the Perman Shield, having been contested since 1925 and featuring morning foursomes followed by afternoon singles, much along the lines of the Ryder Cup. Over the years a number of associated events have been introduced to allow golfers of varying abilities to test their competitive mettle. There are now five competitions where participation is restricted to players not having a handicap lower than a pre-set limit. These individual matches are played on a level basis, with no concession to an individual’s handicap and which, unlike the scratch event, feature just singles matches.

www.spgc.co.uk

The specific competitions, with handicap limits, are as follows: Sundridge Park Trophy (handicaps 5 and over) Wilding Cole Trophy (handicaps 8 and over) West Kent Cup (handicaps 11 and over) Royal Blackheath Trophy (handicaps 14 and over) Gray Trophy (handicaps 18 and over) As you would expect of an historic club, there are a host of beautiful cups and trophies to be contested on an annual basis amongst the Membership. The piece of silverware everyone wants to win is the Bill Marriott Trophy for the Club Scratch Stroke Play Championship. A 36-hole medal competition played over the West and East Courses, whoever comes out on top can rightly claim to be the Club Champion.

www.spgc.co.uk

• Seniors Senior Members at Sundridge Park say they can be identified by their easy smile and carefree manner! There is no joining fee, the sole qualification being that the member has to have reached 60 years of age. The Seniors Section offers: • Companionship • Competitive golf at our Club • League golf against other clubs • Friendly matches against other clubs • Social and charity events. The Seniors compete annually in the Kent Golf Veterans League, which has grown to nearly 50 member clubs in eight geographical areas. The winning teams of each group competes annually in the Group Winners Championship for the ‘Founders Cup’ in the autumn each year, with some 80 players contesting fourball better-ball Stableford play. For less pressurised competition, there are friendly matches against fellow clubs whose modus operandi mirrors our own, namely to enjoy good golf in good company. Informal Club gatherings take place regularly, with ‘swindles’ being held on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Sundridge Park Golf Club | 37

MEMBERS GOLF

(CONTINUED)

• Ladies Sundridge Park is delighted to have a thriving group of female golfers who form one of the strongest Ladies’ sections in the South East.

At home, members enjoy regular medal and stableford competitions with lots of silverware up for grabs, the most prestigious of which is the Club Championship, a 36-hole stroke play event for the Galbraith Trophy.

The county’s premier competitions are well supported, with teams entered in tournaments such as the Bradley Cook, a five-a-side scratch team knockout tournament, the Holland Trophy, a summer foursomes knockout, and the Coombe Cup for golfers over the age of 68.

• Mixed Golf TThe Club runs a Mixed section for those who enjoy a round of golf in good company. There are over 20 fixtures each year including a few matches against other clubs, followed by a convivial dinner, and a variety of internal competitions.

Then there is the Pearson Trophy, a team event played in a group format over the winter followed by a knockout phase with the eventual winners going on to represent Kent against the champions from Hertfordshire, Surrey and Middlesex.

This friendly group enjoys a golfing holiday together for a few days each year and organises competitions on Bank Holiday Mondays. There is also a Mixed invitation event which has proved very popular, with teams featuring four players, two from Sundridge Park and two from another club. The Mixed season concludes with a formal dinner in November.

For those who love their golf whatever the weather, there is a midweek fourball league competition against other clubs run from September to April known as the Kent Winter Fourball. www.spgc.co.uk

Two fantastic courses in a beautiful setting; great food and excellent service Visitors should note that proof of handicap is required at all times. Please take a moment to visit our website and read our rules on dress regulations to ensure your visit runs as smoothly as possible. A minimum standard of smart casual dress is required in all areas of the clubhouse at all times. Lunch is a casual affair, there is no need to change into jacket and tie but we do not allow golf shoes in the dining room.

A DAY TO REMEMBER

W

e welcome visitors and societies alike from Monday to Friday (excl Thursday), with packages tailored to requirements.

Whether it’s a breakfast of coffee and bacon baguette followed by 18 holes and a light lunch, or the ‘Full English’ 18 holes, lunch, then 18 holes on the other course followed by sit down dinner, we will certainly give you a day to remember. Both courses are equal in quality but are quite distinct in character with the East being longer, and on slightly flatter terrain, than the West Course which is tighter and offers outstanding views over the City of London. The golfing challenge is stern, but fair, on either course. Good shots will be rewarded, and off line hits will likely be punished by trees, water or dense rough. However, we are keen to encourage a good pace of play and more often than not sprayed balls can be found in good time… but the penalty of having to chip out sideways or take a shorter club will still cost the player a shot (or two!).

www.spgc.co.uk

Buggies are available and should be booked in advance through the Club Professional. Trolleys are also available for hire through the shop. Current green fee and society rates can be found on our website, www. spgc.co.uk. For those who wish to enjoy an invigorating day-long golfing experience we have a special day rate allowing the opportunity to play on both our courses. Special rates are also available to guests of members, juniors and holders of the County Card. At the end of your game you can enjoy a drink on the terrace before heading to the comfortable for a hot shower to freshen up. Then retreat to the bar to discuss the day’s events before heading to the dining room for a delicious meal, with generous portions, complimented by fine wines and good beers. With prizes awarded over coffee it will draw a relaxing end to a great day to remember. To book your society day or for more details of available packages, please contact our golf day organisers Ben Price ben.price@spgc.co.uk or Simon Wood simon. wood@spgc.co.uk
