Introduction
W
ith our brand-new clubhouse, extensive boatyard with modern lift and moorings on the river adur, along with the original clubhouse and locked moorings within Shoreham Port, SYC is first and foremost a members’ club with unrivalled facilities. We opened our doors to our brand-new clubhouse in 2021 with state-of-the-art facilities, modern bar and restuarant
Yachts of all sizes call the club home, with both rallying and racing strongly supported, as is the dinghy section where particular attention is given to encouraging youth sailors. The club has a diving section, newly introduced but highly popular Stand-up Paddleboarding section, is home to Sussex Sailability, supporting handicapped sailors of all abilities, and also Sussex Motor Yacht Club. SYC boasts a private member’s
bar and steward famous for hospitality on both sides of the channel, along with our superb clubhouse restaurant, Stow’s, enjoying the best panoramic river views in Shoreham.

HISTORY
T
he Sussex Yacht Club was established in 1892 by a group of yachting enthusiasts in order to further the sport of yachting and cruising and is now one of the oldest sailing clubs in the UK.
At this time meetings were held in a room at the Schooner Inn at Southwick which was the club’s first HQ. It was dryly noted that the only reason the club seemed to hold three annual meetings each year was because it was based in a pub.
The Club was originally named “The Mosquito Yacht Club” after the one-design yachts favoured by the gentlemen owners (the class itself was named after the blood sucking insects that once swarmed the Southwick canal).
After WW1 on 17 May 1919 the club reformed as the Sussex Yacht Club, but this fast-growing band keen sailors were threatened by a rent increase from the pub Landlord; in response the ‘Mosquitos’ moved into a converted 40ft Brighton

beach boat called the ‘White Swan’ from Alfred Sweet, then the Shoreham Harbourmaster. This new floating club house even boasted a full-sized piano on board which was subsequently removed and replaced by a full-sized billiard table. At this time there were around 50 members and the club happily ticked along racing in the summer and playing billiards in the winter. However, the White Swan was no spring chicken and the amount of bailing
required to keep her afloat suggested that another new home was needed, so in 1926 it was decided that the Club should be formed into a limited company enabling it to raise funds equitably from the members and so purchase the Old Malt House fronting the Southwick canal. SYC now had a large HQ and more water frontage than the neighbouring Schooner Inn where they once struggled to pay rent on a single room!
This new HQ remains today as the SYC Southwick base and overlooks the considerable club moorings, but we are getting ahead of ourselves. During 1946 the facilities of the Club were further improved by the acquisition of land comprising a river frontage, together with a slipway, hard and boatshed situated on the south bank of the River Adur, and which is opposite the present Shoreham Clubhouse.
In 1950 the continuing need for even further facilities for the Members was met by the purchase from His Grace the Duke of Norfolk of the freehold of Stow’s Shipyard. This extensive freehold, fronting the River Adur at Shoreham, includes a spacious clubhouse, excellent laying up and fitting out facilities, slipways, and is now the main centre of the Club’s activities. With the help of lottery funding, the Shoreham Clubhouse now enjoys high quality facilities, with full disabled access throughout.

History In 1999 Brighton BSAC branch 007 joined with Sussex Yacht Club, enabling the SYC to provide on the water enjoyment in yachts, dinghies, rowing sculls, safety boats and diving. History We also welcomed Sussex Motor Yacht Club back to Shoreham to use our Clubhouse in 2020 providing them with a waterside base which they had been without for several years. The River Adur burst its banks in 2013 causing severe flooding to the old Clubhouse, Brighton Road and Shoreham Town Centre. To protect Shoreham from future flooding, a flood defence wall would
need to be constructed alongside the main road and on the land where the old Clubhouse stood. Adur and Worthing Council therefore purchased the land to build the vital flood defences Shoreham needed. Sussex Yacht Club was able to erect a brand-new clubhouse, which after delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic and Brexit implications, could finally open its doors in 2021.
Our brand-new clubhouse has been constructed with state-of-the-art facilities and meeting rooms, modern clubhouse restaurant, Stow’s, and private members’ lounge with the clubhouse enjoying the best views in Shoreham, overlooking the River Adur. Works are due to start on the construction of the flood defence wall in Spring 2022.

YC has one of the few proper boatyards on this part of the coast and is reached up the River Adur and Shoreham Port Eastern arm with good access over high water. Although income from our yard helps support our sailing and other activities at SYC, you’ll find our rates are competitive, especially for members who enjoy special discounts. There is a large private slipway used to launch and recover yachts and dinghies with recovery assisted by a large powered capstan winch. The main slipway also has
sturdy scrubbing posts which are free to use for members. Importantly SYC has invested in a modern and efficient WISE 25 tonne boat hoist complete with a crane to handle engine and mast lifts. This hoist looks after most of the boat movements. The separate western slip has a tracked cradle that can handle craft up to 37 tonnes for both economical short and long stays. Sail Dinghy Section The Club has a thriving and enthusiastic Dinghy Section. Racing takes place from the main Shoreham club house in the river Adur alongside the new footbridge over slack water at high tide. There is also social sea cruising in Summer. Both club houses have changing room and shower facilities. SYC racing caters for a mixed fleet and club craft are available to charter, There are generally two races during each sailing session lasting approximately half an hour each, with the faster boats
completing more laps of the circuit than slower boats in the fleet. Average lap times are calculated using PY handicaps. Yacht Racing In addition to the regular racing, we also hold Saturday Pursuit Racing. If you wish to try racing, train crew, tune up your own performance or just have a fun sail for an hour or two on a Saturday, then Pursuiting could be for you. You start in order of your handicap number (slowest go first) the
courses are short and simple, very suitable for beginners to both racing and crewing. Email us and we will get you in touch with the race organisers and arrange a handicap number for your boat if you don’t already have one and for you to join the SYC Pursuiting WhatsApp group. sail Racing and Rallying Events Racing and rallying is at the heart of our club, with pursuit, inshore, long inshore, offshore and regattas tailored to suit our varied SYC fleet. No matter what your level and preference of sailing we have a good mix of competitive and more relaxing racing. We encourage crews at all levels to have a go, and although we don’t give prizes to all comers, accurate ratings and hard work can deliver results.
With regards to cruising, SYC organises a varied programme of rallies along and across the channel. The rallies are usually combined with a race, but it is not necessary to participate in the race to join in the rally. Yachts can join in all or part of these rallies to suit your own timetable. Cruising in company is a great way to explore our coast; you can gain valuable experience and discover new friends.

Sailing for Beginners These two-day sailing course, catering for both adults and children 13 and over. We cater for complete beginners, or those who have attended a taster session. At the end of these courses, you should be able to sail safely and
independently in light conditions, and subject to suitable progress, you should obtain your RYA Keelboat Level 1, 2 or 3 certificate. The syllabus will include helming (steering) and crewing a sailing craft on all points of sail. This backed up with workshops and sessions ashore so you are prepared and understand the basics of getting afloat safely. If conditions permit, we shall go to sea late in the course, which will enable the coastal endorsement to be awarded. It is suggested that you follow your training up with like minded members with the Pay & Play opportunities.

T
he Yacht Club is also an ideal location for shore-based theory courses and training for practical exams such as the very popular RYA First Aid at Sea and essential VHF Radio Courses. We also work in partnership with schools in the Solent to provide cost effective practical training and examinations in the Spring and Autumn, with great value courses designed to help members quickly and economically achieve success
in Competent Crew, Day Skipper, Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster Preparation. Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Theory This is an advanced classroom-based course in navigation and meteorology for candidates for the Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate and suits those who have already completed an RYA Day Skipper Course. On successful completion of the course, you will have sufficient background

knowledge to skipper a yacht on coastal passages by day and night. The syllabus makes some provisions for the revision of subjects in the Day Skipper Course but those who have not acquired the knowledge set out in the Day Skipper Course are unlikely to be able to assimilate all the subjects covered in this advanced course in the time available. As you will be based in the Yacht Club, you will meet likeminded Club Members whose passion is boating. Many skippers
are looking for crew to club race and rallying and if you become a Member you can join the crew register and get an opportunity to sail on these craft. Following on from this course you will have the opportunity to put these newfound skills into practice on a fiveday RYA Yachtmaster Coastal Skipper Practical Course. Several courses are arranged by Sussex Yacht Club through our partners in the Solent.
VHF Radio Courses The Short Range Certificate is the minimum qualification required by law to control the operation of VHF and VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) equipment on any British flagged vessel voluntarily fitted with a radio. This includes both fixed and handheld equipment using International channels.
RYA Radar Course Radar is an invaluable aid for navigation and collision avoidance, but it is most useful in the hands of a knowledgeable operator. This is a one-day course popular with those on both sailing and motorboats. Sailing and motor yachts increasingly have radar on board, and the aim of this course is to teach students to use small boat radar to assist in navigation, pilotage and avoiding collision.

he Yacht Club is an ideal location for both shore-based theory courses and training for practical exams involving powerboats for pleasure and also for their use as safety craft supporting sailing activities.
Power Boat Training This course is an introduction to power boating and is run using the club safety craft. It is aimed at complete beginners and by the end of the course you will have covered all practical and theory requirements to safely pilot a powerboat in protected waters. You will get opportunity to learn skills both on planing and displacement craft. Subject to suitable progress you will gain your powerboat level two (tidal endorsement).
activities. Training covers rescue techniques for dinghies, canoes and windsurfers leading to the RYA Safety Boat Certificate. The RYA Powerboat Level 2 Qualification or an equivalent is a prerequisite, preferably with a minimum further season’s experience. This course is being put on primarily for existing safety boat crews to upgrade the quality of safety boat cover for SYC dinghy racing and Sailability training, and these skippers will be given priority in booking for this course.

Pay & Play
P
ay and play is growing at the club and it is designed for those members who do not have their own craft and would like the opportunity to get on the water either sailing, racing, pottering, paddle boarding, building up hours on the powercraft or just going it alone by chartering club equipment.
You will need to be a member and book through the office or online. Taster sessions will be offered in 2022 so please come along and see the opportunities at the club. You will be required to attend an induction if you wish to charter any of the club craft and agree to terms and conditions you will then be approved to book. We want to see as many of you out on the water as possible enjoying the river and coastal waters.

Sussex Sailability
S
ailability was set up by the Royal Yachting Association to enable disabled people to sail. With the aid of a National Lottery Grant, the Sussex Yacht Club set about setting up a local branch called Sussex Sailability as an independent registered charity. New clubhouse has been built to facilitate door to shore access and maximise opportunities for disabled sailing. Our Fleet is composed of boats that are
suitable for a disabled person to sail or to crew. These boats are specially designed for people with disabilities and are stable and designed not to capsize. We have small craft enabling solo sailing in the river to coastal and racing craft including RS Ventures, Laser Stratus, Drascombe Luggers and Sonars the latter competing with the clubs yachts at sea. We have hoists to help people who would find it too difficult to get in or out of a dinghy on their own and a range of

buoyancy aids and waterproof clothing. We have a lot of enthusiastic volunteers who will make sure you get the best out of your time with us. Sailability sessions are run regularly for disabled people as well as a Sailing week at which tuition was given to club members. In addition, the Sonars sailed independently for 40 days including competing in Cowes Week. There are volunteers to help rig, launch, recover, wash and put away the boats and also to assist the less proficient on the
water (more are always welcome!). We ran inshore and cruising session for a total of 90 disabled people. A number of sailors who started with the Sailability sessions now sail regularly with the able-bodied dinghy racing section of the club. Others sail with SYC members in their yachts. Six members of Sailability have also qualified in the RYA powerboat level II course. Over the year we have had a variety of disabilities: learning difficulties, hearing impaired, sight impaired and wheelchair
users. Initially new recruits sail with a coach on the river, once safe, competent and if appropriate, you can sail solo if you wish. It is always at your pace! Safety first but fun very high up on the agenda. If you have sailed before we check you out and let you go. There are sea races too. Sailability members join the Sussex Yacht Club at a special rate after an initial trial period. They are encouraged to participate in all of the club’s sailing activities and social functions.

Scuba Diving Section
T
he Diving Section of Sussex Yacht Club has a long and distinguished history. It was formed in 1954 at the Brighton and Worthing Branch (branch number 007) of the British Sub-Aqua Club and celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2014.
Since joining forces with SYC in 1999, much integration has taken place, with many divers now enjoying sailing and many sailors having taken the plunge to investigate the world beneath their boats. The Club has its own dive boat (8m RIB)
moored at SYC. diving takes place throughout the year, weather permitting. A lot of diving takes place locally between Beachy Head and Selsey Bill, with around 200 sites plotted within a 25 mile radius of the clubhouse. Many locations around the British coast have been dived, from Cornwall to the Orkney Islands. Expeditions to coral reefs in the Red Sea, Kenya, the Caribbean, and Papua New Guinea are also made throughout the year. The Club has its own compressor on site and provides free fills
to members. We also offer Nitrox fills to divers in the Club at a small charge. As a BSAC branch, “007” can train Members from an “Introduction to diving” up to BSAC Advanced per level. BSAC recognises the diving qualifications awarded by other diving organisation and Members can choose to maintain their existing qualifications or transfer to the equivalent BSAC grade. Divers with qualifications from PADI, SAA, IANTD and other agencies are more than welcome.

Sussex Motor Yacht Club
F
ounded in 1907, SMYC has a colourful history of powerboat racing and early aviation
Past members have included royalty and celebrities such as Rudyard Kipling, Charlie Chaplin and Pink Floyd’s Rick Wright. We have welcomed SMYC into our new building bringing its members and trophies for the benefit of both clubs, but they remain distinct from each other.
With Sussex Motor Yacht Club now returning home to Shoreham, this will mean that SMYC is an active tenant in SYC’s new Clubhouse, and has brought its members and trophies for the benefit of both clubs. However, the clubs will continue to remain distinct from each other.
