Welcome

S

ituated on a high plateau more than 800 feet above sea level, Teignmouth Golf Club has provided both members and visitors a world of character, inspiration and unparalleled natural beauty since its founding in 1924. The moorland links course was designed by the renowned golf course architect Dr Alister MacKenzie (nine years before he completed his most famous work at Augusta National, home of the US Masters) and measures 6,082 yards, providing 18 great holes of golf.

www.teignmouthgolfclub.co.uk

The course is kept in outstanding condition all year round by the dedicated greenkeeping staff for both members and visitors to enjoy. We provide everything that a golfer would expect at a well-established club. The Pro Shop stocks a full range of equipment and clothing while expert tuition and extensive practice areas offer the opportunity to work on your game and lower your handicap. As well as offering a demanding but enjoyable course, Teignmouth also has a long history of successfully hosting golf societies, private

functions, lunches, wedding receptions, golf days, conferences and events. Our refurbished clubhouse offers a relaxed atmosphere in tune with the needs of all visitors to the club. The staff offer a warm welcome and our catering is regarded as amongst the best in the region. Come and see what makes us special. You are guaranteed a warm welcome and our friendly staff will ensure your visit is a memorable one.

History

D

esigned by famous golf course architect Dr Alister MacKenzie, Teignmouth Golf Club was officially opened in 1924. Dr MacKenzie left a particular “signature” on all the courses he designed and that was in the way that he laid out the greens. He liked greens that had slopes and humps surrounding three sides of the green as well as a preference for two-tier greens.

6

The landowner at the time was Mr Mardon, who built a clubhouse and leased it to the club along with the land for a nominal sum. However, after Mr Mardon received an offer for the land in 1927 the club swiftly purchased it for just £2,500. Teignmouth’s early history was dogged with controversy, with many people convinced that it was totally impractical to build a golf course on Haldon Moor. However, the chairman, Dr Morton-Palmer, thought that it would

teignmouth golf club

be possible and today’s players have to be grateful for his vision. From 1939 to 1945 the club’s income steadily deteriorated and by the end of World War II the financial problems were even worse. The Air Ministry had taken over the 13th and 14th holes, flattened out all the land to improve the landing area for the nearby airstrip and an observation tower, which can still be seen today, was put up on the first hole.

www.teignmouthgolfclub.co.uk

The course also featured some 400 posts placed on the fairways, “three foot underground and seven foot above” to prevent the landing of enemy aircraft on the course. As a result, member numbers declined and in 1943 membership consisted of 36 men and 17 ladies. By the end of 1947 the club was facing enormous problems and finances were at an all time low until an offer by Teignmouth Urban Council to buy the course for £6,000 was subsequently accepted.

Despite its chequered history, it is surprising to note is how little the course has changed since its original conception. Teignmouth still has eleven greens with a “step” in them and it is amusing to recall that when the late Dai Rees came here first to play an exhibition match in 1957, he very quickly recognised the design and commented that “these damn MacKenzie greens” were going to cause him a lot of problems.

It is a great credit to the architect that, except for the necessary lengthening of holes to bring the course up to its present length, generally the course is still played as it was originally planned back in 1924 by Dr A MacKenzie.

About the Course

L

ocated on the high moor of Little Haldon, over 800 feet above sea level, and with some of the most breath-taking views of the South Devon coast and countryside, the course at Teignmouth Golf Club is a picturesque moorland links course.

8

From the fairways of the outgoing half we look down on Teignmouth itself, nestling into the foot of the slope, and over the estuary of the River Teign to the Devon coast as far as Berry Head. From the inward holes we have a view of the estuary of the Exe, and on a clear day we can follow the eastward coastline as far as Portland Bill.

teignmouth golf club

The course features six varied and challenging par threes and no fewer than 11 two-tier greens, a true MacKenzie trademark. From the white tees, the course measures 6,082 yards and has a par of 69 and standard scratch score of 70. According to the stroke index the hardest hole on the course is the 443-yard 15th, however, anyone who has played the course will know the difficulty of negotiating the course’s shortest hole, the 125-yard 16th.

www.teignmouthgolfclub.co.uk

It is not called ‘Hell’s Mouth’ for nothing and this innocuous looking par three is all about finding the green on the low side of the flag or you will leave yourself a downhill putt on this hole, which will make par a challenge. Thanks to a programme of continual investment and an outstanding natural environment, the course is maintained to a very high standard and allows great quality golf to be played all year round.

The MacKenzie design principles for an ideal golf course can be summarised as: • Should be arranged in two loops of nine holes (to create different wind conditions throughout the round) NOTE: this is true at Teignmouth and also offers the flexibility of two starting points.

shots called for during a round) NOTE: this is very much the case at Teignmouth with its demanding six par threes. • The greens and fairways should be undulating, without steep hills for the golfer to climb NOTE: although high up above the sea nearby, the terrain is fairly flat at Teignmouth and is sometimes referred to as a moorland links.

• Should have a mix of long par fours, drive and pitch holes and at least four par threes (to create infinite variety in the type of

• There should be a minimum of blind approach shots NOTE: there are none at Teignmouth. • The emphasis should be placed on natural beauty, not on artificial features NOTE: the course at Teignmouth is very natural and the surrounding views are stunning.

• There should always be an alternative route for the weaker player, yet a sufficient test for the plus-handicap player (this feeling influenced course layouts when penal designs were king) NOTE: this holds true at Teignmouth, particularly in a stiff breeze!

• Course conditioning must remain consistently outstanding NOTE: Teignmouth has a growing reputation for excellent condition throughout the year.

• There should be a complete absence of the annoyance caused by searching for lost balls NOTE: deep rough, heather and gorse will be encountered at Teignmouth but only if your shot is sufficiently wayward to deserve it.

Course Tour

I

f you have never played at Teignmouth Golf Club before you are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the pitfalls that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our holeby-hole tour.

12

Hole 1 - Par 5 - 472 Yards – Bishop’s Palace The opening drive on this first hole is very demanding and should be aimed right of centre. The fairway, from tee to green, slopes considerably from right to left and the player must make allowance for this slope. This is a definite birdie chance for the better player and a great way to start the round.

teignmouth golf club

Hole 2 - Par 3 - 151 Yards – Sandy Parlour The green is very well bunkered in front and requires accurate club selection. With the pin positioned at the front it becomes very difficult to get near to the hole with the tee shot.

www.teignmouthgolfclub.co.uk

Hole 3 - Par 4 - 311 Yards – Mapping Stone The shortest par four on the course which may yield a birdie if the drive is positioned to the right. This allows a clear second shot approach avoiding the two bunkers on the left of the green.

Hole 4 - Par 4 - 384 Yards - MacKenzie Named after the course designer, the hole is invariably played into the prevailing wind and often requires two well struck long shots to a wellguarded green. Rough along both sides of the fairway demands much accuracy from the tee.

Hole 5 - Par 3 - 162 Yards – Gypsy Corner A very accurate tee shot is necessary to find the green, which slopes from front to back. Choosing a line to the right of centre avoids the carry over the bunkers to the left half of the green.

teignmouth golf club

13

Course Tour CONTINUED

Hole 6 - Par 4 - 466 Yards – Humber Down A slight dogleg to the right which even the low handicapper does well to reach in two. The safe route for the average player is to keep to the left of the bunker off the tee. The low handicapper can cut a little off the dogleg by aiming slightly right from the tee and carrying the right hand bunker.

14

Hole 7 - Par 3 - 208 Yards – Three Tors With magnificent views of Dartmoor in the background, one can easily be distracted from this difficult tee shot which requires the ball to be played towards the left edge of the green, avoiding both the bunkers and the quarry to the right. The ground slopes from left to right and with the two-tier green the player must find the correct tier to make the putt easier.

teignmouth golf club

Hole 8 - Par 4 - 360 Yards – The Road Hole Two strategically placed bunkers and a lone tree on the left side of the fairway steer the player over to the right side of the fairway. However, too far right requires a big carry over the right hand greenside bunker. The green is distinctly two-tiered and putting can be difficult if on the wrong level.

www.teignmouthgolfclub.co.uk

Hole 9 - Par 5 - 550 Yards – Dymond’s Way This is a genuine three shot hole where there is no shortage of bunkers. The cross bunkers 130 yards from the green require the average player to keep the ball to the left for safety for the second shot, but the low handicapper can generally carry these bunkers. The green is fairly long, again with two-tiers.

Hole 10 - Par 4 - 468 Yards - Portland As the name ‘Portland’ suggests, on a clear day Portland, some forty miles away to the east in Dorset, can be seen from the fairway. This is another of the many wonderful distractions on this course. The hole is very straight but is best played keeping the ball left of centre to avoid the fairway bunkers. An accurate approach is needed to a narrow green.

Hole 11 - Par 3 - 194 Yards – Vardon’s Mount A very demanding tee shot as the player must take enough club to carry the quarry in front of the green. Playing to the right avoids this hazard but risks a most difficult pitch in over the bunker to the pin.

teignmouth golf club

15

Course Tour CONTINUED

Hole 12 - Par 4 - 364 Yards – Harold’s Folley An intimidating tee shot back across the quarry to a left to right sloping fairway. Not a long hole but made difficult by two large bunkers guarding the front left side of the twotiered green.

Hole 13 - Par 5 - 493 Yards - Siberia The last of the three par five holes. The drive should be kept slightly to the right and the second slightly to the left to allow for the approach to the very narrow well-bunkered green. Hole 14 - Par 4 - 378 Yards – Little Haldon The player now heads for home where sight of the pin position helps select the line off the tee. Another fairly narrow approach to a tightly bunkered green.

16

teignmouth golf club

Hole 15 - Par 4 - 443 Yards – Holcombe Top Normally regarded as the hardest hole on which to make par. This hole is usually played into a right to left headwind, so finding the fairway is critical in allowing the player to reach the green in two shots. The approach shot must be played to the right side of the green allowing for the ground to gather the ball to the left towards the flag.

www.teignmouthgolfclub.co.uk

Hole 16 - Par 3 - 125 Yards – Hell’s Mouth An innocuous-looking hole which has destroyed many a card over the years. Club selection is all-important and positioning the ball on the low side of the flag from the tee makes putting a little less hazardous on this sloping green.

Hole 17 - Par 4 - 329 Yards - Dip The approach shot is invariably played from a side hill, downhill lie to a green that slopes away from the player. When the ground is firm the shot should be played as a pitch and run. In very dry conditions the low handicap player can drive the green.

Hole 18 - Par 3 - 224 Yards – Last Quarry A very typical MacKenzie design hole, with a carry over the quarry from the tee, out of bounds left and a hugely undulating two-tier green with several mounds surrounding it, this is an extremely tough finishing par three hole.

Opens & MacKenzie Festival Week

T

eignmouth is an historic golf club with a rich heritage dating back to the founding of our club in 1924. We know we have something special here and nothing gives us greater pleasure than to share the enjoyment of our magnificent course with people who may not have experienced it before.

26

One of the ways in which we can do this is by staging a number of open competitions spread throughout the season aimed at golfers from all walks of life and all abilities and these take place from May to September. Full details can be found on the website. However, the most important of all our open events is the MacKenzie Festival, which takes place across a whole week in June.

teignmouth golf club

Starting on Saturday, golfers are offered the opportunity to enjoy a free round as they warm up for the competitive golf in store. Sunday sees the Boy Bladon Challenge Cup, an individual competition for men, before the Molly Cayless Cup later on that day, which is an individual competition for ladies with a maximum handicap of 36.

www.teignmouthgolfclub.co.uk

Monday’s only event is the mixed team Arbie Trophy, while Tuesday is our busiest day. Starting with the Cellars Bar MacKenzie Pairs, the following event is the U.D.T Salver better ball for ladies, which takes place before the Lyme Bay House Cup, a mixed foursomes event.

Wednesday plays host to both of the Vice Captain’s Cups; both the men’s and women’s. The Croydon Cup kicks off Thursday’s action and following it is the Tolchards Cup for ladies.

If you would like the opportunity to play up to eight rounds of golf on one of the finest courses in South West England, please get in touch by calling 01626 777070 and select Option 2.

The week’s finale is held on the Friday with the Dart & Partners Cup, which is a four-person team event of any combination, and a great way to see out the programme.

Custom Fitting

T

here has been a growing realisation in recent times that golfing tuition ought to go hand-in-hand with equipment that allows each player to make the absolute best of whatever level of natural talent they possess.

The reality is that a golfer could have a perfectly acceptable technique but still be held back because their clubs are not entirely suitable to their swing.

www.teignmouthgolfclub.co.uk

At Teignmouth we are able to custom fit a set of clubs with each golfer’s individual physique and swing characteristics. Custom fitting is something that we take very seriously and we pride ourselves in what we do. We offer a full and extensive range of products all available for custom fitting.

Customising the clubs to position the golfer in the ideal position for their physical characteristics will train the golfer to address the ball with the correct posture and swing along the ideal swing plane, which all adds up to the correct impact position and better scores.

This service costs less than you think and can bring about a dramatic improvement in ball striking.

Practice Facilities

W

hile some might argue that golf is never a game that can be totally mastered, even by the best players who earn their living from the sport, there is no doubt that anyone can get better with a little time, effort and the right practice facilities. Here at Teignmouth Golf Club we are able to offer a range of areas where you will find our members diligently working on improving their game.

www.teignmouthgolfclub.co.uk

The most noticeable is our large practice ground located in the middle of the course which gives golfers the opportunity to hit some full-length shots and see the ball flight before they head onto the course.

In addition to our practice ground and putting green, and, for those who find time is at a premium, there are indoor and outdoor practice nets that afford the opportunity to get loose before beginning a round.

The more intricate parts of the game are not overlooked, with two short game areas and a practice putting green mirroring the fine surfaces found out on the course and a great meeting point located next to our clubhouse.

We’re also home to an indoor GolfLab teaching facility, which includes the latest swing analysis technology and, if all that doesn’t work, book in for a lesson with our popular professional, Rob Selley by calling 01626 777070 and select Option 1.
