WELCOME
T
ruro Golf Club set in a beautiful landscape was founded in 1937. In gently undulating countryside and populated by mature trees, the golf course provides a stern test for low handicap players and an enjoyable experience for all.
The 18-hole, par 67 parkland course stretches a total of 5,339 yards and is beautifully maintained by our green keeping team. A fantastic combination of attractive fairways and slick greens makes for a challenging course to delight members and visitors alike. We also host a putting green, ample parking, a practice area and first-class tuition available with our PGA Professional.
Our modern clubhouse with its comfortable bar and catering facilities, ensures golfers, social members and guests gain maximum enjoyment from their visit to Truro Golf Club. Although only a mile from Cornwall’s capital city, the beauty of the course with fine views across open countryside presents an outstanding sporting oasis. We would be delighted for you to come and experience the warm welcome guaranteed at our friendly club.

HISTORY
A golf course for Truro?
T
his was the question presented to businessmen of Truro’s Chamber of Commerce. The then Chairman, Mr W. J. Kemp, led the discussion in which the result was to form a subcommittee to progress the issue.
6 | TRURO GOLF CLUB
By May 1936 a site (the present location) had been found and running costs had been estimated. Five members of the Chamber of Commerce formed a syndicate, which became known as Treliske Estates Limited and which would rent out the land to the golf club.
Tenders for the design of the course were requested and Messrs. Colt, Alison and Morrison’s plan for a 5,560yard 18-hole course were accepted in November 1936. Once the decision had been made, progress was swift.
The Mayor of Truro, Mr. A. J. Roberts, cut the first turf on 18th December 1936 and on 29th April 1937 the first nine holes were completed. By December 1937 the course had grown to 18 holes. In 1939 the army requisitioned six holes for regimental purposes and a further area was taken on which to build an Italian prisoner of war camp.
Success at recovering this land after the War was tempered somewhat by the need to use mine detectors to clear unexploded grenades from part of the course. By now finances were in dire straits and membership was down to 153. Undeterred, members set about reviving the club with a vengeance, running a large number of social and golfing activities to raise funds.
The club flourished and in May 1947 the West Briton reported that “except for tip-top courses one could not find better fairways and greens than in Truro”.

The Course
W
hat can you expect? You can look forward to a thoroughly enjoyable round of golf on a course that rewards good shots but penalises bad ones. Inevitably, given the proximity to the city of Truro, we do not have a surfeit of space. Nonetheless, the par 67, 5,339-yard, 18-hole course offers a great challenge to golfers of all standards and ages.
The copious trees and shrubs extend an open invitation for wayward balls and with many fairways boasting out of bounds markers, you need to ensure you play safely and sensibly. Although only just over 5,300 yards you will find it difficult to play to your handicap as the fairways are tight, the out of bounds plentiful and the greens small and full of character.
Whilst our course has six par 3’s, each offers its own unique challenge and cannot be considered anything of a respite. Indeed, it is not uncommon for hopes of a good score to disappear at one or two of our shorter holes. The beautiful views? They are there to be enjoyed, certainly, but be careful they do not distract from the job at hand!
TRURO GOLF CLUB | 9
Course Tour
O
ver the following pages you can take the course tour, learn how to navigate and best play the course by picking up our pro’s tips on how to get the most out of your round. Hole 1, 350 yards, par 4 Not an easy warm-up hole this one. A dog-leg round the prominent woods some 180 yards down the fairway calls for a brave drive with draw. In a warning of what to expect during your round, a short or poor shot is penalised with woods to the left and a bunker to the right.
10 | TRURO GOLF CLUB
Hole 2, 168 yards, par 3 The hole slopes away to the green below you, cut out of the falling ground, so a club less than the yardage suggests is advisable. Guarded by a bunker on the left and some mature conifers to the right, a straight shot is essential. Hole 3, 375 yards, par 4 A wonderful panorama of the course awaits you as you drive off this hole, which looks deceptively long. Watch out for the 0.0.B. to the right. A good drive will roll to the left and offer an open shot
over a gully to the green. This two-tier green slopes to the left, so play your approach shot slightly right of the hole. Hole 4, 152 yards, par 3 A short straightforward hole but look out for the bunker in front of the green, which collects the short shot. Hole 5, 196 yards, par 3 The ground slopes down and to the left on this longish par 3 hole. Trees guard both sides of the target and there’s a long narrow green sloping
to the left - so make allowance. Congratulations if you chalk up three on this hole! Hole 6, 454 yards, par 3 This is a difficult left-hand dog-leg with the ground sloping sharply to the green. Your drive needs to get you to the dog-leg to open the hole but if too long or short you are in trouble. A long iron or fairway wood is needed if you are to make the green, but beware of the slope, which can cause the ball to run through the green - it’s stroke index one for a reason!
Hole 7, 400/486 yards, par 4/5 There is a lovely view from the elevated tee of this recently built par-5 hole. Play your second shot to the left side of the fairway to allow an open approach to the green but beware of the 0.0.B. behind. Aim your approach shot at the left corner. Hole 8, 354 yards, par 4 Don’t be tempted to try to cut off the dog-leg, particularly if there is any wind. A drive to the top of the hill opens the green nicely.
Hole 9, 159 yards, par 3 One or two clubs more are needed than the yardage suggests on this uphill hole. The dangers of the twin bunkers guarding the green are plain to see. Hole 10, 309 yards, par 4 Just a drive and a pitch on this hole will see you safely on the green. Avoid driving right, as you will get into difficulties amongst the trees. Watch out for the bunkers, particularly the deep trap to the left of the green.
TRURO GOLF CLUB | 11
Course Tour Hole 11, 328 yards, par 4 Bringing you back to the clubhouse the 11th is an attractive and fairly level hole. A large oak to the left and a group of trees to the right (at about 170 yards from the tee) penalise a wayward drive. Aim just right of the large oak for the perfect approach. Hole 12, 319 yards, par 4 A medium or long iron is needed to get to the plateau just before the lane. Watch out for the ever-beckoning 0.0.B. to the right. Bearing to the left will reward you with a nicely positioned ball for a pitch over the road onto the green.
12 | TRURO GOLF CLUB
CONTINUED
Keep an eye out for the cars using the school lane and golfers crossing to the 17th tee. Hole 13, 343 yards, par 4 A rather daunting drive with trees on the left and a deep hollow which drops to the 0.0.B. on the right. Aim for the marker to reduce the tendency for the ball to run to the right boundary hedge. A bunker guards the green and you will be pleased to get par. Hole 14, 210 yards, par 3 Don’t be fooled! This hole requires a wood or a long iron to the left corner of
the green if you are to survive. Watch out for the bunker to the left and to the right front of the green, perfectly positioned to catch the shot which is straight but not straight enough! One of our trickier greens that guarantees a par will be celebrated. Hole 15, 371 yards, par 4 Take time with your approach shot as the green is guarded by trees and long or wayward shots punished.
Hole 16, 176 yards, par 3 Without doubt our most attractive hole with ground steeply sloping to a stream before rising to a green guarded by a deep bunker and threatening trees on the right. Don’t be fooled by the fairly modest length of this hole, as it is renowned as a graveyard of many high hopes. A pretty hole but play the shot first and admire the view afterwards.
Hole 17, 334 yards, par 4 A good hole which tests a player’s ability to hold a drive up against the run of the ground from left to right. The difficult green is nicely situated but take care to be on the correct level of the three tiers. Watch out for players driving from the 18th tee.
Hole 18, 288 yards, par 4 A gentle last hole which offers little difficulty. Two fairway bunkers to the left and right penalise a short, inaccurate drive but with care you should finish with a four.

Visitors
V
isitors are warmly welcomed at the club at any time during the week and at weekends, subject to course availability. Please contact the Golf Club prior to arrival to ensure a tee time is available to avoid clashes with members and societies. Once they have found you a slot, come along for 18 or 36 holes at Truro and enjoy our great course and fine hospitality.
14 | TRURO GOLF CLUB
We are a relaxed club, but we do ask visitors to respect our rules and standard golfing etiquette to ensure their visit runs as smoothly as possible. In common with other clubs we request that visitors abide by our dress code. Standard golfing attire and proper golf shoes are required on the course and smart casual dress in the clubhouse. If you are unsure, please phone the club to check.
Although handicap certificates are not mandatory, we do prefer golfers to be of a sufficient standard for them to be able to enjoy their round and for them not to inconvenience other players when out on the course. Our green fees are very reasonable and there are reduced rates for guests of members, juniors and holders of a county card. If time is no object and you cannot get enough of your golf, it is certainly worth noting that our daily rate, which is only a few pounds more than a single round represents excellent value.
This would enable you to enjoy 18 holes in the morning, sample the culinary delights on offer in the clubhouse by means of a snack or filling meal before going out in the afternoon to burn off those calories and right those morning wrongs helped by the additional course knowledge you had acquired.
Simply check available tee times by phoning the Pro Shop on 01872 276595, print off your voucher and bring it along. Participating visitors will enjoy full use of the clubhouse, bar and catering facilities. We can’t promise you’ll break par every time, but a visit to Truro will be a memorable experience that won’t break the bank.
For those visiting the area on a golfing break, a weekly rate is available, and our website often has offers for visiting players, such as two-for-one vouchers which can be used any day of the week excluding public holidays.

Things to do in Truro
T
ruro could hardly be better placed if you are visiting this part of the world for the first time and are intent on enjoying some great golf and all the other things that our wonderful county of Cornwall has to offer.
Set amongst rolling countryside the course offers magnificent views over the city and its striking cathedral. In the far distance are the white mounds of the china clay works near St. Austell, affectionately know as the white mountains.
Truro itself is the county town and largest settlement in Cornwall and has plenty going for it! We are Truro’s own parkland course located about a mile from the city centre and astride the city boundary. Our situation makes the golf convenient for holidaymakers from both coasts as well as golfers from central Cornwall.
Truro Cathedral was finally completed in 1910, making it the first new cathedral in England since London’s St Paul’s. It contains a soaring high-vaulted nave, some fine Victorian stained glass and the impressive Father Willis Organ.
Walking the 18 holes of our picturesque course is a pleasure in itself, but if any or your party are non-golfers looking for something equally relaxing, the National Trust-owned Trelissick Gardens at Feock near to the King Harry ferry crossing, are resplendent on a sunny day. There are a host of glorious beaches within easy reach, offering something for everyone: sun worshippers, families, swimmers, surfers and dog walkers.

Things to do in Truro It does rain from time to time, even in Cornwall, but fear not, there’s plenty to do in the city, with the cathedral to explore and the Royal Cornwall Museum in River Street. Spread over two floors, it traces Cornwall’s heritage from early (pre-golfing) man to modern day. For those partial to a bit of a tipple, how about a trip to Skinner’s Brewery in Newham Road or Healey’s Cornish Cyder Farm at Penhallow, both offering guided tours and a chance to sample some of the local brews?
For short business or golfing trips, family holidays, short breaks and as a base for exploring Cornwall’s gardens, attractions, natural beauty and shops, Truro represents an excellent choice.

We are also less than a 40-minute drive away from the pioneering Eden Project, which draws crowds from all over the globe to see the indoor rainforest and exotic plant life featured there.
The busy market town of St Austell, the chic holiday resort of St Ives, Newquay, the surfing capital of the UK, and Penzance, the most westerly major town in Cornwall, offering easy access to Land’s End and St Michael’s Mount - are all within a 30-mile radius of the club.
