Welcome Verulam also boasts a good social environment, with a comfortable clubhouse, recently enlarged and refurbished.
Nestling close to the centre of St Albans and surrounded by woodland, a lake and the River Ver is Verulam Golf Club. It is a haven for club golfers, providing a challenging golf course and regular competitions for ladies, gentlemen and juniors, either as members or as visitors to the club. Verulam also boasts a good social environment, with a comfortable clubhouse, recently enlarged and refurbished. The club has its own place in golfing folklore as the man who brought us the Ryder Cup learnt his golf
here. Sam Ryder was a member at Verulam and Club Captain on three occasions. In 1926 Ryder presented a cup to promote matches between the United States of America and Great Britain and his brainchild, the Ryder Cup, has since turned into one of the world’s biggest sporting events. The club has been progressive ever since its inception in 1905, with developments continually being made to the club complex to expand and improve the facilities for both members and visitors.
We provide all of the facilities that a golfer would expect at a well-established club. The Pro Shop stocks a full range of equipment and clothing while expert tuition and extensive practice areas offer the opportunity to work on your game and lower your handicap. We welcome your visit and work hard to ensure we provide outstanding service, so come and see what makes us special.

About the Course Our signature hole is the challenging 14th played with water down the right and trees on the left requiring accuracy from the tee.
Verulam is a mature course renowned for its small, fast and undulating greens. The course is tight and sets a premium on accuracy and shot control. Out of bounds is a danger at many holes and there are numerous other hazards to negotiate. Our course presents an excellent and interesting test of golf, offering a tough challenge even to the experienced golfer – as evidenced by the Amateur and Professional course records of 67 and 65 respectively. The course measures 6,429 yards (par 72) from the white tees. In summer the ball really does run, although the best scores result from being straight and having a good short game rather than through long hitting that doesn’t follow the fairway. The par-4 4th is the toughest hole on the card for good reason. At 398 yards even off the yellow tees,
it requires a long well placed drive, with an accurate approach shot to be hit blind over the brow of a hill. The River Ver comes into play on a number of holes with a range of well-placed banks, mounds and more than adequate bunkering making shot accuracy a premium throughout the course. Our signature hole is the challenging 14th played with water down the right and trees on the left requiring accuracy from the tee. The approach to the green requires you to negotiate two well placed bunkers and then once the green is reached the view from the top of the hill is spectacular framing
the St Albans Abbey on the skyline. We take great pride in both the year-round condition of our course and in the pace and subtlety of our greens, arguably amongst the finest in Hertfordshire. Due to its excellent draining characteristics, the course is rarely closed in winter and temporary greens are virtually unheard of.

History In 1911, Samuel Ryder was appointed Club Captain for the first time (he would hold the office twice more in the 1920s).
Abe Mitchell
Founded in 1905, Verulam Golf Club was originally designed as a 9-hole course by civil engineer, Ernest Phillips. Six years later James Braid, a member of the Great Triumvirate, designed and extended the course to 18 holes on land leased from the Earl of Verulam. With only 130 acres of land and rolling features to work with, he produced a course to challenge even the professionals of today.
John Henry Taylor and Harry Vardon, while Abe Mitchell, Henry Cotton and Alex Herd also had the pleasure of playing our magnificent course.
In 1911, Samuel Ryder was appointed Club Captain for the first time (he would hold the office twice more in the 1920s). Ryder was determined to bring professional tournaments to the club and his efforts ensured the early survival of Verulam, as well as the development of golf across the globe.
The course has remained in its original layout but over the years has been updated with the installation of an irrigation system, building of new tees and recently a refurbishment of the bunkers to meet present day playing standards.
Other famous golfers to have played the course include the other members of the Great Triumvirate,
In the mid 1980s, 5,500 saplings were planted to balance the felling of several trees in an extensive woodland management programme. Since being
planted, the saplings have grown significantly, adding variety and life to the woods lining the fairways which combined with the annual Tree Fund planting programme creates a woodland scene of varied colours all the year round. Many things have changed since that time but the course still provides as stern a challenge now as it did in those pioneering days at the start of the 20th century.

Ryder Cup He joined Verulam Golf Club in 1909 and only two years later, having proved his ability as a player, he was appointed Captain of Verulam Golf Club.
Verulam is a golf club steeped in history. However, one piece of history singles out Verulam in golfing folklore it is the home of the Ryder Cup. Samuel Ryder, founder of the Ryder Cup, was born in Preston, Lancashire on 24th March, 1858. Early in the 20th century he was ordered by the doctors to abandon the game of cricket due to a breakdown in health, with golf the beneficiary. He took up the sport and it soon became his driving passion. He joined Verulam Golf Club in 1909 and

only two years later, having proved his ability as a player, he was appointed Captain of Verulam Golf Club. He was both impressed and concerned about the American professionals who were pillaging the British tournaments, so he set out to improve the standard of the English game. He paid for golfers to travel to tournaments and hired Abe Mitchell as his personal professional, largely to free him to play full-time.
It was in 1926 when a group of Americans were here for the British Open that they played an unofficial match against a British team, with the British team coming away victorious. There was a party after the match and Sam Ryder agreed to put up a trophy for an annual match, subsequently changed to biannual. The trophy, which is solid gold, was made by Mappin and Webb with a figure on top that is, allegedly, Abe Mitchell.
In 1927, the trophy made its first appearance at the inaugural Ryder Cup match held in America, with the United States team coming away victorious. Over 80 years after the initial match, teams from both America and now Europe still do battle every other year and the Ryder Cup is one of the biggest audience participation events worldwide, with huge TV and commercial sponsorship. Today, Verulam Golf Club still honours Sam Ryder. A replica of the Ryder Cup trophy is played for annually, following the same format as the illustrious
tournament, while a putter owned by Sam Ryder which was made by George Brews, a club maker at Royal Blackheath, is on display in the Clubhouse and the present day Captain sits in the Captain’s Chair that Sam Ryder presented to the club.
being elected mayor in 1905 and surprising fellow councillors with an uncomplimentary assessment of the council’s achievements. He remained a councillor until 1916 and the rest, as they say, is history!
While Sam Ryder’s impact on Verulam Golf Club and golf worldwide is immeasurable, his impact on the city of St Albans is also considerable. After being elected to the town council in 1903, he continued to increase his political influence,

Course Tour The green sits only feet from the out of bounds and a bunker guards the front right.
If you have never played at Verulam Golf Club before you are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the pitfalls that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our hole-by-hole tour. Hole 1 361 yards, par 4 A generous fairway combined with one of the flattest greens on the course. Wherever your drive finishes, you face out of bounds a few yards from the left of the green and a strategically placed bunker feet from the right hand side of the green. Hole 2 343 yards, par 4 One of the most demanding holes at Verulam. A bunker encroaching on the right hand side of the fairway and out of bounds running the full length of the hole on the left makes the tee shot tricky. The
green sits only feet from the out of bounds and a bunker guards the front right approach. Hole 3, 311 yards, par 4 Driveable for the bigger hitter. Select a line that allows a clear second shot to the severely awaysloping green. Approach shots will often have to land short and run on.
the fairway. Approach shots will be blind until you reach the top of the hill. Trust the marker behind the green it is well placed. Hole 5, 375 yards, par 4 A tough left-to-right dog-leg. Enough club must be taken off the tee to reach the corner and avoid the trees. Big hitters may try to hit over the corner but beware the out of bounds beyond the fairway. The

and other trouble lying 80 yards from the green. Yet another well-bunkered green with severe slopes finishes the front nine.
Hole 6, 322 yards, par 4 A short right-to-left dog-leg with out of bounds on the left side of the hole. The green is raised and slopes from back to front, with a deep bunker to the right. Any shot played past the flag is a tactical mistake on this fast and sloping green.
Hole 8, 180 yards, par 3 Club selection is the first problem as the wind direction is difficult to assess. The green slopes sharply from back left to front right with two bunkers guarding the right and left approaches. The green is difficult to hit and does not concede two putts easily.
Hole 10 194 yards, par 3 The second demanding par three. Club selection is complicated by avoiding the subtle hollow in front of a visible green. Out of bounds runs the full length of the right side and the left hand side of the green is guarded by a visible bunker from the tee.
Hole 7, 433 yards, par 4 A long, demanding uphill hole that will require two long and accurate shots to reach the green. High handicappers may need three shots to find the 14

range bunker on the left towards the practice area. Further bunkers are placed on the right and left of the green entrance and the River Ver lies only feet from the right hand side of the green.
Hole 12 338 yards, par 4 A demanding hole with out of bounds on the right towards water. You will not see the finish of a wellstruck drive as the fairway slopes away towards the green which is protected by an approach fairway bunker and three greenside bunkers right and left. The green slopes away front to back.
Hole 14, 348 yards, par 4 The signature hole and a truly great test of golf. Trees on the left and the River Ver on the right will collect any poorly struck shot from the tee. A ridge crosses the fairway 100 yards from the raised green that is protected by two bunkers on the left and right hand approach. The putting surface cannot be seen from the fairway and its subtle borrows make putts difficult to read.
Hole 13, 372 yards, par 4 Out of bounds and water on the right and a well in
Hole 15, 369 yards, par 4 A demanding and intimidating tee shot for many golfers. The facing embankment, the trees, the wind, the carry, all conspire against you and you will not see your shot finish. The fairway slopes right and left from a highpoint and the green is severely undulating right to left with undulating mounds defending the left hand side of the green.

Course Tour Continued... The approach often plays longer than it appears while there is the chance for longer hitters to go for the green, although the risk is high with a narrowing fairway and deep bunkers waiting.
Hole 16, 293 yards, par 4 A short par four but a wolf in sheep’s clothing. An off-line tee shot will rarely leave a shot to the green. The approach often plays longer than it appears while there is the chance for longer hitters to go for the green, although the risk is high with a narrowing fairway and deep bunkers waiting.
Hole 17, 127 yards, par 3 The road hole that deceives and golfers must be careful in judging the wind here. Ensure you carry the out of bounds and hedge but expect no pity from the green as its severe slopes will not give away two putts easily.
Hole 18, 574 yards, par 5 Three good shots are required to reach the green in regulation. Out of bounds awaits down the full length of the hole on the left and an array of nine carefully sited bunkers on the left and right of the fairway are to be contended with before approaching a sloping green guarded by bunkers on the left and right approaches. Shots must be positioned carefully to avoid disaster.

Practice Facilities There are designated areas for long hitting iron shots and approach play, offering the chance to use the full range of irons.
Excellent instruction is nothing without the facilities to put those newly-learnt skills into action, working on them until they become second nature. Here, Verulam scores highly for the conscientious golfer looking to maximise their potential and lower their handicap to become the best they can possibly be.
A chipping area and practice bunker are also available adjacent to the clubhouse and the 18th green, for golfers looking to perfect those roundsaving strokes or up-and-downs.
The club’s practice facilities are open to anyone who has paid a green fee. For those wishing to work on their short game, there is a large putting green in front of the clubhouse that has been specially prepared to complement the subtle borrows of the greens on the course.
For those who find time is at a premium, there are two practice nets situated yards from the first tee that afford the opportunity to get loose before beginning a round.
The long game is not overlooked, either, with a newly landscaped large practice range situated between the 11th, 12th and 13th fairways. There are designated areas for long hitting iron shots and approach play, offering the chance to use the full range of irons. Two driving bays situated at the bottom of the practice range offer all weather practice facilities and the chance to hit those drives.

The county’s premier competitions are well supported, with teams entered in the Pearson Trophy and League competitions.
Whether you are a member or not, if you are looking to improve and learn more advanced golfing techniques we also offer the opportunity to join the Ladies Academy.

Open Competitions Events may vary slightly from year to year, though you will find details of upcoming events on our website.
Verulam is an historic golf club with a rich heritage dating back to the founding of our club in 1905. We know we have something special here and nothing gives us greater pleasure than to share the enjoyment of our magnificent course with people who may not have experienced it before. One of the ways in which we can do this is by staging a number of Open competitions spread throughout the season aimed at golfers from all walks of life and all abilities. The season usually includes a Ladies’ Open with mixed golf throughout the season and there is an annual Mixed Open, an afternoon 18 hole pairs competition.
One of the highlights of the golfing season arrives in mid-September with our Samuel Ryder Trophy. In tribute to the founder of the modern day Ryder Cup, we continue to hold a competition reproducing the original event. This 36-hole medal scratch competition sees foursomes in the morning followed by fourballs in the afternoon. The Captain holds his Open Day Charity event in mid September.
Later in the month we host our second Ladies’ Open of the season with our Ladies’ Open Invitation Day and the final Open of the season is the Junior 18 Hole Open usually taking place during October half term. Events may vary slightly from year to year, though you will find details of upcoming events on our website, www.verulamgolf.co.uk, together with information about how you can reserve your place. www.verulamgolf.co.uk
