Welcome
Walsall Golf Club, the hidden gem in the heart of the Midlands. Founded in 1907, Walsall have celebrated both their centenary and subsequent 110th anniversary.
We are a members club run by members for our members retaining many traditions over its 112 years. At the same time we embrace change continuously improving the golf course, clubhouse and benefits of being a member of this great Club. New members are welcomed with plenty of opportunities to meet new golfing friends and to enjoy the clubhouse too.

History
Walsall Golf Club founded on the 19th March 1907, is a Club steeped in tradition. On this date a limited number of gentlemen met at an inauguration meeting specifically to form a Golf Club. The land was then leased from Lord Bradford for a sum not exceeding £117 per annum, at a location known as the Gorway.

Following the formation of the Club, six holes were laid out with the advice from J H Oke, Club Professional at Sutton Coldfield. The course was officially opened on Bank Holiday Monday, 5th August 1907, when it was reported the Captain and Honorary Secretary ‘drove’ the first two balls.
After one year the course had been enlarged to 14 holes and a Professional was appointed together with a Caddymaster. The entrance fee at that time was 4 guineas and the annual subscription was 2 guineas. The membership then stood at 149 members and at this point it was decided to organise a Ladies section to help finance the Club, limited to 100 lady members.
Sadly, several members were killed in action during the First World War, including the Club Professional - Mr Higgins - details of this can be seen on the Memorial Tablet in the clubhouse. After the war, a decision was made to enlarge and improve the course and in 1919, Dr MacKenzie was appointed; the course was increased to 18 holes and 9 new greens were laid at a cost of ÂŁ2000.
Soon afterwards the local council informed the Club of their intention to build a ring road through the course and after lengthy negotiations, it was agreed that the local authority would pay for a new course to be constructed and would donate ÂŁ2600.00 for a new Clubhouse, the land to be leased with rent reviews every 7 years. The new location was to be just a short distance from the original links.
Dr MacKenzie, widely regarded as one of the finest golf architects in the world, was again appointed to design the new course and oversee construction. This was officially opened on 25th March 1930.

Notably, Dr MacKenzie designed and built several courses throughout the world and was responsible for Royal St Georges, Royal Troon, Lahinch and Moortown, Whilst designing our course he was also putting the finishing touches to Augusta National, both courses in fact, share the MacKenzie trademark two-tiered greens and easy walking from green to tee.
During World War II, the clubhouse was damaged and a Steward of Salvage was appointed. An air raid shelter had to be built and trenches were dug to prevent the landing of enemy aircraft. In 1943 the Club was instructed to turn the land over for arable farming, but after D-Day this idea was dismissed.
Today, we are widely regarded as one of the premier golf locations in the Midlands, regularly hosting many prestigious events. The course itself is fully mature with a completely new irrigation system and the layout has barely changed from Dr MacKenzie’s original design.

The front nine starts with a gentle par four and runs clockwise around the outskirts of the course. After the second gentle par four to ease the players into their round the pressure of a dogleg third hole and par three fourth start to test golfers of all abilities.
The momentum starts to build on the back nine when the holes turn inwards, zigzagging their way through the centre of the parkland course. Only one of the par fours in this second half measures less than 410 yards from the white tees and the closing three holes give a great crescendo to the round of golf.

Hole 1 - ‘Paddock’ - Par 4 – 283 Yards A straight, accurate drive to avoid out of bounds on the left, then a pitch into a well bunkered two tiered green.
Hole 3 - ‘Hobart’ - Par 4 – 406 Yards A dogleg left with out of bounds on the left hand side. A good tee shot will leave a middle to long iron to this green.
Hole 2 – ‘Melbourne’ - Par 4 – 322 Yards The ideal drive is up the right side of the fairway, avoid out of bounds and bunker on the left then a good short iron into this two-tiered green.
Hole 4 – ‘Canal Turn’ - Par 3 – 170 Yards This par 3 requires an accurate medium iron to find the green. A large bunker left and the ground falls away around the back of the green.

Hole 5 - ‘Flats’ - Par 4 - 464 Yards A superb long par 4. Ideal line is left of the centre of the fairway. The perfect second shot needs a slight fade. Beware bunkers short of the green. Hole 6 - ‘Spinney’ - Par 4 – 286 Yards Play short of the fairway bunker to leave a short iron into a long green bunkered on both sides.
Hole 7 - ‘Tiger’ - Par 3 – 190 Yards Excellent short hole which requires a long iron or wood to a green well protected on the left by a large bunker. Hole 8 - ‘Walstead’ - Par 4 – 411 Yards Beware out of bounds all the way up the left hand side. A long iron second shot must avoid the large tree and bunker short right.
Hole 9 - ‘Lateral’ - Par 4 - 338 Yards Drive up the centre avoiding the stream at 160 yards and the right hand fairway bunker. Then a short iron into a long well bunkered green. Hole 10 - ‘The Willows’ Par 3 - 163 Yards An accurate middle iron shot into a green well guarded on the right.
Hole 11 - ‘Fentons’ - Par 4 - 411 Yards A fine tree-lined par 4, the second shot is always longer than you think. Hole 12 - ‘Folley’ - Par 5 – 480 Yards This par 5 is reachable in two shots but you must avoid the trees 200 yards from the tee. There are two bunkers short of the green to catch any wayward second shots.

Hole 13 - ‘Tree Top’ - Par 3 - 175 Yards Another good short hole. A long iron is required into a long green well bunkered on all sides. Hole 14 - ‘Long Four’ - Par 4 – 415 Yards This fine par 4 doglegs left. The drive needs to be up the right side and a long second shot is required to a well bunkered green.
Hole 15 - ‘Three Oaks’ - Par 4 – 326 Yards A difficult short par 4. Accuracy off the tee required avoiding trees on the left with bunkers and a large oak on the right, leaving a tricky pitch to the green.
Hole 17 - ‘Pennick’ - Par 4 - 428 Yards The hole doglegs slightly to the right. The ideal line is up the right side. A long second shot must avoid the bunkers at the front of the green.
Hole 16 - ‘Dog Leg’ - Par 4 – 455 Yards A superb par 4. The drive must avoid the fairway bunker, you then have a second shot into a well bunkered green.
Hole 18 - ‘College’ - Par 5 - 536 Yards The longest hole on the course. The drive has to be straight to avoid the trees left and right. The second shot playing downhill to the green under the clubhouse protected by a stream fifty yards short. Longer hitters may accept the challenge of a bold second shot !!

The opportunity to play regular golf on our beautiful golf course is obviously the first main reason why golfers join, but soon our members enjoy being part of our “family� of friendly fellow sportspeople. All golf members have free use of the practice facilities at all times, including three under cover bays for all weather opportunities.

As a member there are plenty of opportunities to play at other local courses in the regular inter-club matches for all ages and abilities. All members have free unlimited use of the clubhouse which offers a well stocked bar giving 15% discount to all members on drinks. Catering is available everyday for when you have built up an appetite playing golf or simply if you wish to pop in during your lunch hour.
Regular clubhouse functions are arranged with a variety of entertainment to suit all ages and tastes. We have two full sized snooker tables for our members to enjoy at all times

‘Flexible Lifestyle Membership’ offers the benefits of being a member with the flexibility to suit your lifestyle. The subscription fee includes credits to play the course plus full use of the practice and clubhouse facilities with the opportunity to obtain a CONGU handicap and play in some specified club competitions and matches. Credits are used to “pay for” each round of golf, the number of credits is dependent upon peak and off peak times - Cost £ 495.
‘MacKenzie Membership’, named after our designer Dr. Alister MacKenzie, is Walsall Golf Club’s no joining fee category which offers unlimited use of the golf course, clubhouse and practice facilities with no need to book. Subscription fees are usually paid in monthly instalments by standing order. 25% discount available for the first year.
‘Full Membership’, as the title indicates offers full unlimited use of ‘everything’. Our subscription year runs from 1st July, therefore if you choose to join us at any other time the annual subscription is calculated pro rata for the remainder of that year.

Society and corporate days are encouraged at Walsall Golf Club and can be tailored to meet individual requirements. Packages are available to include 18, 27 or 36 holes together with refreshments from breakfast through to dinner.
Nearest the pin and longest drive competitions can be arranged for any golf day - the tricky 10th hole being the favourite for nearest the pin, the 11th for longest drive and a definite closing tester of nearest the pin in three shots on the 18th. The “Empire Lodge� halfway house can be stocked for your golf day, simply ask for details when booking.
Off the golf course we offer a high standard catering together with a full range of beers and spirits and a well stocked wine cellar. The perfect end to your visit with us.
