Discover your natural beauty J
ODIE SMITH'S front teeth had lost their whiteness and worn so thin they were almost transparent. 'I was planning my wedding and was very unhappy about my teeth, so thought I’d try Woodford House Dental Practice. I’m so glad I did! In my first consultation (which was free!), Dr Malik carefully explained that my uneven bite was causing me to grind my teeth in my sleep – which was why I often found my jaw ached too. The enamel had eroded, making my teeth over-sensitive so my mouth was always uncomfortable. We discussed all my options and he was able to put everything right well before my wedding. He fitted my front teeth with crowns, and built up my lower and rear teeth to make my bite even again. After the work was finished, my fiancé (now my husband) noticed I smiled in a different, more relaxed way; I’m sure that’s because having really nice teeth made me happier and more confident! Looking at photos of me before and after the treatment, you can really see the difference though my teeth look completely natural.’ info@improveyoursmile.co.uk

history
F
ounded in 1900 by a small number of far-sighted businessmen, West Essex enjoys a wealth of history and tradition, as well as being an excellent golf course. The course, situated on the edge of Epping Forest, was originally leased from a ‘Mr. Melles’ for a fee of £140 per annum, as 80 acres of farmland gave birth to West Essex Golf Club.
The parkland course was designed by legendary figure James Braid, a member of the Great Triumvirate. 6
During the early years funding was required to keep the club afloat and contributions from members raised £5000 and the club was safely in the hands of its members.
and the start of it in 1914 led to a reduction in membership subscription and an increase in club outgoings, leaving the club struggling financially.
In 1902 the original clubhouse was built by Mr. W. Gardener of Waltham Abbey at a cost of £3,663. 10s. 7d. By then, improvements to the rough layout of the course had started and in 1903 sand arrived and was placed in the newly dug bunkers.
During the war the club was active in raising funds for war charities while wounded soldiers, up to 100 at a time, were on several occasions entertained and given hospitality at the club.
By 1912 a new ladies clubhouse was built at a cost of £392 but within a few years the First World War had become imminent
The end of the war in 1919 saw the resumption of normal club life and the stabilisation of its financial position.
The precise history of the gradual acquisition of more land during the 1920’s is uncertain, however, we do know that in 1925 a new lease was signed for the course land over a period of 21 years commencing at £140 per annum. During most of the next two decades the course was gradually developed along with the clubhouse, which included a lounge extension added between 1935-1939. However, no sooner had it been opened then blackout curtains were covering every window as a state of war had been declared.
During World War II the course and clubhouse were showered with bombs and a crater depression is still evident just beyond the bunkers on the second hole. Following the war, the club went from strength to strength and in 1954 the club brought 4.6 acres of land for £220, which now plays home to the 12th green and 13th fairway. The following year saw the club finally purchase the land on which the course stood at a fee of £10,160. The course was again developed in the mid-1970s with a land swap providing the opportunity to open new holes.
By the 1980s it had become inevitable that in order to progress the club needed more space for parking and development and the members approved a move to the present site and the construction of the new clubhouse in 1989. West Essex has evolved dramatically over a century and now stands proud as one of the premier clubs in Essex.

about the course
A
course of two distinctive halves, West Essex’s 6,289-yard championship parkland course provides 18 superb holes, playing to a par of 71. ‘The West’ is routed through the glorious Epping Forest at Chingford with picturesque views across the city of London, including landmarks such as Canary Wharf, the London Eye, the Shard and Wembley Stadium. Ranked in the top four best in Essex by top100golfcourses. co.uk, the course is a real test of accuracy and power.
The tree-lined front nine meanders through the forest, uphill and downhill, requiring accuracy and precision, while the back nine is flatter and longer, allowing you the opportunity to open your shoulders and let go. The toughest hole on the scorecard is the par four, 470-yard 13th. Hit too far to the left on this right to left dogleg and you will find your ball in the trees. Aim for the centre of the fairway for your best chance of par but beware of the bunkers lining the green when hitting the approach.
West Essex is also home to the smallest championship green in England. Nicknamed ‘the Frying Pan’ by members, the 159-yard 5th is a short downhill par three where you are trying to land your ball on a green that measures just 14 yards wide.

course tour
I
f you have never played at West Essex you are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the pitfalls that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our hole-by-hole tours. Hole 1 - Par 4 - 272 Yards Great opening hole to set your round off – the long hitters can drive the green, the more conservative golfer needs to drive the ball to the middle/right half of the fairway, a short iron to a flat green will leave a birdie putt.
Hole 2 - Par 4 - 384 Yards A blind tee shot over the ridge to the right half of the fairway will leave a medium to long shot into a narrow green; accuracy and distance control are the key here. When you find the green there’s a comfortable birdie chance. Hole 3 - Par 3 - 160 Yards A short par three. Make sure you stay beneath the hole as this will leave you a good birdie chance. Anything long and you’re facing a challenging par.
Hole 4 - Par 4 - 371 Yards Your drive must be placed to the right of the fairway, the slope will kick back every ball to the left, leaving you with a short iron to an equally sloping green. Club choice for your second shot is essential but make sure you favour the right half of the green. Hole 5 - Par 3 - 159 Yards Another short par three – but don’t take this hole too lightly. Be positive with your tee shot to the left half of the green and the slope will gather the ball to the green to leave you with a possible birdie chance. 11

course tour Hole 6 - Par 4 - 329 Yards Play your tee shot to the left half of the fairway, this will leave you with a medium to short iron to an elevated green so make sure you take another club to reach the green. A slope from back to front will test your putting skills. Hole 7 - Par 3 - 150 Yards A challenging narrow par three. Your tee shot must find the green or you will have a challenging chip to save par. There is more room to the back of this green than you think so take enough club to get there.
Hole 8 - Par 5 - 496 Yards One of the best tee shots on the course. A relatively short par five but you must treat the hole with care. Play to the left side of the marker off the tee to leave yourself with a chance of going for the green. All the trouble is right on this hole so take care when you play across the slope. The green falls on the left and right so accuracy with the approach is needed.
Hole 9 - Par 4 - 411 Yards A stunning tee shot to tempt you to open your shoulders but play safer to the left of the fairway as the slope will gather the ball into the fairway. Your second shot into a smaller target could be anything from a long iron through to a shortish iron depending on the wind direction, but favour the right half of the green.
13
1900
course tour Hole 10 - Par 5 - 559 Yards A tight looking driving hole, there’s more room than you think so trust your line. A full fairway wood second shot will leave you with a straight forward pitch to the green. Make sure you stay below the hole to give you an easy birdie putt. Hole 11 - Par 4 - 428 Yards A good drive to the left side of the fairway will leave you with a medium to long iron into a flat green; accuracy is the key to both shots.
14
Hole 12 - Par 4 - 349 Yards A short par four with a bite to it, play your tee shot safely to the right half of the fairway. Then take care with your second shot, play an extra club to this elevated and very narrow green. Leave the ball underneath the hole to give you a chance of birdie - play this hole carefully and it will reward you. Hole 13 - Par 4 - 470 Yards A big tee shot with plenty of room to the left half of the fairway will leave you with another big shot into a big flat green – needless to say this is a big hole with a big reward if you par or birdie it.
Hole 14 - Par 4 - 315 Yards Your tee shot needs to favour the left half of the fairway which will leave you with a short iron into a firm green. Just play to the middle of the green as it’s easy to run the ball through. Hole 15 - Par 43- 184 Yards A great par three, your tee shot needs to be struck firmly to the left half of the green, go too far left and the bunkers will catch you, leak it out right and a ditch will swallow up the ball. Once you find the green it’s not over as the slopes will challenge your putting skills.
Hole 16 - Par 4 - 365 Yards A dogleg right hole. Simply play your tee shot to the fairway bunker, this will leave you with a medium iron to an elevated green. Take one or two clubs more than the yardage says as it’s all carry to a high green. The green has a Mackenzie slope through the middle so clubbing is paramount and make sure you take your time over your putt as the slopes can take the ball quickly off track.
Hole 17 - Par 4 - 432 Yards An easy and inviting tee shot to a fairway well below you. The challenge here is with your second shot. You may have a medium to long second shot remaining to a very small green so accuracy is the key here.
Hole 18 - Par 5 - 455 Yards An inviting tee shot to the middle of the fairway will leave you with a choice of either going for the green or playing safe before the fairway bunkers. Make sure you play to the middle of the green here as anything too far right will leave you with a difficult putt or chip and anything too far left will take the ball off the green into the bunkers.

Experience life-changing dentistry, and enjoy the everlasting benefit of highest quality dental care at Woodford House
ETIRED CIVIL SERVANT Don Brereton had serious issues with his teeth for years. ‘My upper teeth were damaged or had broken crowns, and the lower ones were getting looser all the time. Eating out was increasingly difficult and embarrassing. I wasn’t happy with how I looked when I smiled, either.’ Don went to Woodford House where senior practitioner Dr Amjad Malik took the matter very seriously. ‘Treatment was essential because before long, Don’s difficulties in chewing would have affected what he was able to eat. When the diet is compromised, general health can deteriorate.’ In an extensive programme of work, Dr Malik replaced Don’s full set of teeth with implants – which pleased Don greatly. ‘They’re more usable even than my own teeth twenty years ago, and better looking too! I can eat – and smile – without any worries at all. Also, as long as I look after them, I’ve got them for ever.’

custom fitting
T
here has been a growing realisation in recent times that golfing tuition ought to go hand-in-hand with equipment that allows each player to make the utmost of whatever level of natural talent they possess. Clubs merely bought off the shelf will be of a standard specification but unfortunately golfers are not, coming in all shapes and sizes. The reality is that a golfer could have a perfectly acceptable technique but still be held back because their clubs are not entirely suitable to their swing.
This is where custom fitting comes in, a relatively new phenomenon that allows a set of clubs to be built to marry with each golfer’s individual physique and swing characteristics. Custom fitting is something that we take seriously here at West Essex and we pride ourselves in what we do. We offer a full and extensive range of products all available for custom fitting. This service costs less than you think and can bring about a dramatic improvement in ball striking. Even the top touring professionals struggle to maintain the same
fundamentally sound swing characteristics every time, so it is a lot to ask for the average golfer to do likewise. Customising the clubs to position the golfer in the ideal position for their physical characteristics will train the golfer to address the ball with the correct posture and swing along the ideal swing plane, which all adds up to the correct impact position and better scores. We are the leading Custom Fitting Centre in Essex and hold all personal fitting parts in stock and for more information please telephone the Pro Shop on 0208 529 4367. 25

practice facilities
W
hile some might argue that golf is never a game that can be totally mastered even by the best players who earn their living from the sport, there is no dispute that anyone can get better with a little time and application and the right practice facilities. Here at West Essex we are able to offer a range of areas where you will find our members diligently working on improving their game.
28
The most noticeable is the large, grass driving range, appealing to golfers who like to hit some fulllength shots and see the ball flight before they head onto the course. The more intricate parts of the game are not overlooked, with a fine practice putting green mirroring the fine surfaces found out on the course and a great meeting point located behind our clubhouse. In addition to our driving range and putting green, we are fortunate to have a large open plan practice field where you can hit your own balls to a variety of flag targets.
For those looking to perfect those round-saving strokes we also have a wonderful pitching green along with two practice bunkers. And if all that doesn’t work, book in for a lesson with our popular professional, Chris Baron.
juniors
T
he next generation of golfer is always the most important and the Junior section of any club should reflect that continuing search to move towards the new era. At West Essex we welcome juniors of all ages and standards to come and have a fun, safe and positive experience when playing golf. Our dedication to developing and nurturing our junior talent is evident by the number of championship winning golfers and teams the club has produced.
Past winners include our Youth Shield team that were victorious in 1989, 1991 and 1998, our very own Vince Cox played for England and European Boys in 1987 and, in 2011, our juniors were crowned Champions of England and the Home Nations Champions. As well as benefitting from a number of organised competitions juniors can also take part in our Festival of Golf, the Junior Open, as well as monthly medals and the chance to use the course without limitations.
Juniors also enjoy very attractive membership rates and with Chris Baron, our Head PGA Golf Professional, you could not be in better hands. Chris runs one-toone and group coaching for juniors and is the perfect person to help young golfers get the most from their game. To enquire about becoming a junior member at ‘The West’ or for further information call 020 8529 7558.

We are a family run public house, where all our customers from families to dog walkers to horse riders and ramblers are welcomed by our warm helpful staff. The Owl has a fantastic picturesque garden which includes a large children’s play area, an outside barbecue and plenty of seating for all to enjoy. Our menu ranges from traditional Billingsgate Market fresh Fish and Chips to homemade genuine Italian pizzas and lasagnes, cooked in our authentic in house pizza oven using the best Italian ingredients! Our kitchen uses sourced produce from farms in and around the Essex and Hertfordshire area. We will be having a major refurbishment in the beginning of the year, which will bring lots of exciting opportunities not
only us but for our customers to enjoy. We will still be keeping the warm and welcoming country atmosphere that we know our customers love. It will be an exciting time for us as we can now improve on our successes we have had over the past year since we took over the running of The Owl, such as Christenings, wakes, parties for all occasions and our own events such as The Traditional Pie and Mash night, Breakfast with Santa and many more! Once the improvements have been done we will have the capacity to hold and organise larger events such as weddings and balls!

open competitions
W
est Essex is an historic golf club with a rich heritage dating back to the founding of our club in 1990. We know we have something special here and nothing gives us greater pleasure than to share the enjoyment of our magnificent course with people who may not have experienced it before. One of the ways in which we can do this is by staging a number of open competitions spread throughout the season aimed at golfers from all walks of life and all abilities.
The action generally starts in June with the West Essex Oliver Fisher Shield and James Braid Trophy up for grabs in a 36-hole Scratch Stroke Play competition. We also have a very successful and wellsupported Pro-AM in early July each year. However, the highlight of every summer comes in the shape of the four-day West Essex Festival of Golf, which kicks off in August using the four ball better ball format featuring men’s, ladies, seniors and mixed competitions.
We have a great reputation for our high value prizes and superb catering before, during and especially after the golf. The season comes to a close in late October when we host the West Essex Junior Open; an 18hole Scratch and Handicap Medal competition. You will find details of upcoming events on our website, www.westessexgolfclub.co.uk, together with information about how you can reserve your place.

wildlife at the west
S
ituated on the edge of Epping Forest and further surrounded by farmland and grazing fields, West Essex is home to a great variety of species. Many animals, reptiles and insects live on the course, such as rabbits, squirrels and foxes. Over the years we have spotted two types of snake, the adder and grass snake, while bats, moles, stoats, dragonflies and a variety of butterflies have made the course home.
Deer have become a regular visitor to the course and there is a steady feed of bees, wasps and hornets in the hard clay areas. Birds are by far the most numerous to visit ‘The West’ and there have been spotting’s of robins, woodpeckers, skylarks, tree creepers and nuthatches in recent years.
If you are unlucky enough to put your ball in the water during your round you may have the chance to see some of the species that live above and below the surface. Look out for swans, herons, gadwalls, wigeons and much more. Next time you head out for a round we hope you can enjoy watching out for our visitors and they can enhance your time on the course.
