Established in 1974, Whipsnade Park Golf Club offers a challenging 18-hole golf course, and a warm and friendly welcome to everyone.

Whipsnade Park Golf Club Nestles in the tranquil Hertfordshire countryside some 700 ft up on the Chiltern Hills . It’s located between the picturesque villages of Studham and Dagnall and bordered on two sides by ZSL Whipsnade Zoo. Set in over 150 acres the tree lined parkland course is varied and interesting. It's length and clever design add to the challenge for golfers of all abilities.

The clubhouse, a delightfully restored 1850's farm building with original flint walls and oak beams provides all our members and visitors with a warm welcome, a full complement of beverages and locally sourced homemade food.

In 1972 Dagnall Hill Farm was acquired with planning permission for a golf course by ex England Rugby Prop Forward and entrepreneur, Larry Webb.

He enlisted the skills of local Professional Golfer George Hamshaw to design a course on the land.

This was done by hitting golf balls to judge distances and utilise the land to the best advantage. The course opened in 1974. The golf club was taken over by present owner Derek Whalley in June 1978.

In conjunction with the Forestry Commission 20,000 trees were planted over a 5-year period between 1979 and 1984 to tree line the fairways and separate the holes. These have matured to enhance the attractive parkland course we have today.

The clubhouse was originally farm buildings which included barns and cow sheds. The flint walls and Queen Ann oak beams, were successfully converted into a delightful lounge bar and restaurant, with adjoining men’s and ladies changing rooms.

1990 saw further refurbishment with the building of a Professional Shop along with a new patio area and putting green.

Whipsnade Park Golf Club is set in the peaceful, beautiful countryside of the Chiltern Hills, with panoramic views of Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire.

The mature tree-lined 18 hole, par 73 course is also bordered on two sides by ZSL Whipsnade Zoo. Although it is some 700 feet above sea level, the course itself is only gently undulating, making for easy walking.

There are covered driving bays, a full-size grassbased driving range, a chipping green and a practice putting green to help every golfer in their pursuit of a perfect round.

The course is complemented by excellent practice facilities.

Hole 1 - Par 5

A short par 5 offers a great opportunity for a fast start. After safely negotiating your tee shot over the pond to the corner of the dog-leg, look left for a stunning view over the Chilterns. Out of bounds stretches the length of the hole to the left, with two bunkers protecting the front of the green that slopes back to front.

Hole 2 - Par 4

A gentle dog-leg left requires accuracy off the tee, favour the right side of the fairway to give the best view of the green. Trust the yardage as the bunker front right shortens the second shot.

Hole 3 - Par 3

The first par 3 that requires an accurate tee shot to a small green that slopes back to front.

Anything long will test your short game. Left could result in a face-off with the resident neighbouring cheetahs.

Hole 4 - Par 5

A par 5 that looks out over the wild savannahs of Africa at the local zoo! Out of bounds runs menacingly along the left side of the hole and, whilst the longer hitter can reach the green in two, danger is literally right next door! If the green is out of range the ideal lay-up is just short of the two mounds leaving a comfortable approach shot to the green guarded by a bunker that seems to creep out of nowhere and swallow the ball.

Hole 5 - Par 4

A tough par 4 that demands an accurate tee shot if you’re to get a good, clear view of the green.

The longer hitter might take the ‘Tiger line’ and cut the corner by aiming over the oak tree that stands proudly on the corner of this right to left dog-leg 245 yards from the back tee. A narrow approach between a sharp run off area and deep greenside bunkers makes this hole a true test from tee to green.

Hole 6 - Par 5

A left-right dogleg, this is the third par 5 in the first six holes and at 480 yards offers another opportunity for a good score. For those looking to reach in two, a long drive beyond the corner of the dog-leg is necessary in order to get a clear view of the green. Otherwise, this is a true threeshotter with grass mounding and bunkers lying in wait for your second and third shots. to be continued

Hole 7 - Par 3

A great par 3 that invariably plays into the wind.

At 200 yards from the back tee this can be a monster and although it is the only hole on the course without a bunker, it represents a stern challenge and is defended by the long, narrow green that is difficult to judge distance and some tricky mounding to negotiate for any shot that misses right.

Hole 8 - Par 4

Another testing par 4 from a position nestled amongst fir trees, the 8th hole opens out onto a fairway guarded by two imposing trees, situated 245 yards from the tee to the left and a wellappointed fairway bunker to the right. Those daring and long enough can carry the trouble to leave a shot into a well guarded green that rewards the good approach with a green sloping left to right.

Hole 9 - Par 4

Heading back towards the clubhouse the 9th hole is a slight dog-leg left that plays as one of the toughest on the course. With a wide inviting fairway, a vast cross bunker lies between you and the safety of the putting surface. Your decision is whether your tee shot was long enough to enable you to take on the carry or lay-up. Two large bunkers also protect both the left and right of the green. The green itself is one of the most undulating on the course sloping from back to front.

Hole 10 - Par 4

A par 5 that looks out over the wild savannahs A straight away par 4 that has two well positioned fairway bunkers that makes the tee short feel a little tighter. A precise second shot is required into an hour glass shaped green that is heavily protected by bunkers either side. Anything short and slightly left will generally get collected by the left-hand bunker. A beautiful hole, the 10th runs alongside woodland where the majestic red kite is often seen gliding through the skies.

Hole 11 - Par 5

One of the finest holes on the course. A long dog-leg right par 5 with out of bounds running for its entirety along the right and around the back this hole. Aim towards the Silver birches for safety or if you feel daring and are long enough, take on the corner of Out of Bounds, a good line being just to the left of the tallest tree.

More often than not, even for the big hitter, this is a true three-shot par 5, with a narrow well protected green, accuracy is essential.

Hole 12 - Par 4

Regarded by many of our members as the hardest on the course with Out of Bounds a constant presence to the right, a fairway that pinches in 250 yards from the tee and a slender, fiercely sloping green! The green itself, slightly raised will challenge your short game if missed.

Hole 13 - Par 3

The elevated tee offers the perfect view of the green and hazards on this testing par 3. With the green protected by a large bunker to the right and a deep pond to the left a well struck tee shot to the heart of the green is required.

Hole 14 - Par 4

A dog-leg right par 4 with trees on both sides.

The fairway narrows at the corner, a tee shot of over 225 yards is required if you are to get a clear view of the green, making this hole an intimidating opponent. The relatively flat putting surface is guarded by a raised bunker to the left and Out of Bounds over the back.

Hole 15 - Par 4

Heading slightly uphill all the way, the 15th hole plays more than its 414 yards. Any tee shot to far right will find the trees with little hope of reaching the green, with three strategically placed bunkers surrounding the green club selection is essential if you are going to find the putting surface.

Hole 16 - Par 4

The 16th tee shot demands a left to right shot to take on the dog-leg, heavily guarded by trees this is one of the harder driving holes on the course.

A long high second shot is required to take on the large oak and deep bunker that protect the front of the green, a further two bunkers sit either side of this long narrow green that has a distinct ridge running through the centre of it. Take your par and move on!

Hole 17 - Par 3

The final par 3 on the course where choosing the correct club can be tricky due to a fair portion of the green being hidden from view by the gently undulating lie of the land. Don’t be fooled into thinking the wind doesn’t play its part as the trees to the left and right can often disguise the nature and direction of the breeze. Three well placed bunkers sit in wait for any errant shots.

Hole 18 - Par 5

The beautifully converted farm building Clubhouse stands invitingly at the end of this downhill par 5.

The best line from the tee is directly towards the flag pole by the Clubhouse, which will then leave you best placed to proceed towards the green from the middle of the fairway. If you can avoid the long bushes to the left the longer hitter can reach the generous green in two and post a birdie or better on this final hole.

our Men's, Ladies, Senior's and Junior's sub sections offer a full schedule of competitions, matches and events aimed at players of all standards.

Our membership year at Whipsnade Park Golf Club begins on the 1st of April and runs for 12 months to the 31st of March.

We offer a variety of membership schemes to suit all lifestyles from full 7 day and 5 day membership allowing unlimited use of the facilities to Lifestyle Membership with a points scheme that is adopted for every time you play.

We encourage joining midway through our membership year and charge accordingly, pro-rata. Should you require, we offer a direct debit facility to help split the cost via a company at an additional cost.

During your round, you will be forgiven for getting distracted by the variety of wildlife on and surrounding the course.

It is not uncommon to spot Wallabies hopping across the fairways, in fact left of the 1st fairway they are usually often sat at the fence.

The 2nd and 3rd holes border the zoo's deer heard and whilst playing the 4th hole the zoo's elephants and camels are easily spotted. Muntjac deer roam the course whilst up above Red Kites and Buzzards can regularly be seen.

The 13th hole's pond has some majestic koi carp.

The wooden areas are home to Woodpeckers, Cuckoos and Owls.

Get here early enough and you will hear the distinctive roar of the neighbouring Lions.
