Captains’ Welcomes Men’s Captain – John Kendall I am extremely honoured to have been asked to be Men’s Captain of this great club. When I joined some 12 years ago I wouldn’t have thought this possible. Wimbledon Common is unlike so many other golf clubs in that we are extremely open and welcoming to golfers of all levels. You can learn your golf here, or you can hone your single figure handicap and help the teams win various club competitions. We welcome everyone, social golfers, competitive golfers, young or old, so if you wanted to try golf but were always put off by the stuffiness of it all, come to Wimbledon Common Golf Club — you’ll be welcomed with open arms. Playing golf on the Common brings a lot of unique things into play. It’s a tight course, so don’t be fooled by the length, and the greens are amongst the best in Surrey. We have a highly qualified PGA Professional so if you want to have lessons this is the club for you! Liz (this year’s Lady Captain) and I have jointly chosen Young Minds as our charity for the year. They are committed to improving children’s wellbeing by offering advice & support for parents and young people affected by mental health issues. Enjoy your golf, and I hope to see you on the course or in the clubhouse soon!

Lady Captain – Elizabeth de Bay I am honoured to serve as Lady Captain of a club known for its warm welcome to players of all standards and to those new to golf. The Ladies section is a very active group offering regular roll-ups on Wednesday and Friday mornings, a full programme of Ladies and Mixed Club Competitions and plenty of opportunity to represent the Club in local friendlies plus national competitions including the prestigious Pearson Trophy. We run a highly successful Golf Academy for new golfers, an annual Summer Tour as well as a wide programme of social events and friendly Bridge on Monday afternoons. The Clubs’ charity is Young Minds, a small charity committed to improving children’s wellbeing & mental health and offering support & advice to parents. COVID 19 made 2020 unique but it hasn’t dampened our spirits and, although we’ve not been able to run the many events we had scheduled, we’ve made the most of our beautiful and unique course on Wimbledon Common. Interested in joining or learning how to play? Give me a call on 0208 946 7571 and I would be delighted to take you out for a few holes or tell you about our Golf Academy.

History The Wimbledon Town Golf Club was founded at a meeting held at the Wimbledon Hill Hotel on February 20th 1908. Membership was limited to 100 residents of Wimbledon and the entrance fee and annual subscription set at one guinea each. Playing was permitted by the Conservators only on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Each player had to employ a caddy, a practice which continued into the 1920s. During the First World War much of the Common was taken over by the War Office. In 1919 the South London Golf Club amalgamated with WCGC. Our name became “Wimbledon Common and South London Golf Club” and was simplified to Wimbledon Common Golf Club in 1928. World War II was a huge setback for the club. Many members left for military service and the Common was taken over by the military making the course largely unplayable. At the end of the war the pre-war green keeper was re-hired and repairs of wartime damage were made. After the austerity of the late 1940s, the Club gradually recovered. In 2008 the Club celebrated its centenary with a year-long calendar of activities and celebrations.

To ensure a harmonised temperature throughout the room, the Daikin Emura’s 3D air flow system combines vertical and horizontal auto-swing louvres creating an even distribution of air throughout the room, even into the corners of large spaces.
2-area intelligent eye
The two-area intelligent eye sensor controls comfort in two ways. If the room is empty for 20 minutes, it changes the set point to start saving energy. As soon as someone enters the room, it immediately returns to the original setting. The intelligent eye also directs air flow away from people in the room to avoid cold draughts.

History continued Lady members were first admitted in 2005, and new ladies’ changing rooms were added in 2012. A year later, a Ladies’ Academy programme began, and has since admitted men. Solheim Captain Carin Koch kicked off National Golf Month at the club in May 2015, recognising how WCGC has grown through ladies’ involvement. In 2016 a Ladies’ team entered for the first time, and won, the Surrey Ladies County Golf Association Druce Trophy (pictured right with Robert Holmes and Lady Captain Joanna Croker). The clock tower was added to the clubhouse in 2018 at the bequest of founding lady member and three-year Lady Captain Karen Owen, to help golfers keep to their tee times. The pro shop moved to the clubhouse interior in 2019 and was opened in honour of Edward Harris, recognising the life of our remarkable three-time chairman. Club technology was updated and bar area upgraded over 2019-2020 under the club’s first female General Manager, Emma Pope.

Hole-by-hole Guide The course on the Common, which we share with London Scottish Golf Club, is the second oldest continuing golf course in England and Wales. It was first played on in 1865. So it is not surprising the greens are so good - they have had plenty of time to mature. White Tees: SSS 66 / Rating 66.40 / Slope 107 Red Tees: SSS 70 / Rating 69.50 / Slope 123 Jack’s Tips are provided by our Golf Coordinator, Jack Ross.
1. Plateau White Tees: Par 3 / 228 Yards / SI 7 Red Tees: Par 3 / 198 Yards / SI 6 A challenging opening hole, only 22 yards short of a Par 4. Requires an accurate shot to find the green. Out of Bounds on the left, and gorse and bushes on the right, are problems.
2. Hope Grant White Tees: Par 4 / 437 Yards / SI 1 Red Tees: Par 5 / 433 Yards / SI 3 A long, straight fairway with trouble right and left. Needs two good shots to find the tricky, undulating green. Justifies its stroke index 1 for the white tees.
Jack’s Tip: Anything long of the green is in serious danger, so it’s best to stay short. You’ll be happy to avoid a big number here.
Jack’s Tip: Middle of the green with your approach is better than going for the flag. Finish without a big number—risks lie ahead.
www.wcgc.co.uk | 29
3. Nest White Tees: Par 4 / 276 Yards / SI 14 Red Tees: Par 4 / 247 Yards / SI 9 A welcome rest from the first two holes, this is a short Par 4. A medium length drive will leave a short pitch to a flat green. Do not go long, as the trouble is through the green. Jack’s Tip: Right side of the fairway is favourable off the tee as there is a tree blocking approach shots from the left. 4. Spinney White Tees: Par 3 / 170 Yards / SI 11 Red Tees: Par 3 / 138 Yards / SI 10 A classic length Par 3 with a bowl-shaped green that can’t be seen from the tee. Play between the two birches on the hill to find the centre of the green. Jack’s Tip: There’s more room to the left than you think. Right of the green and you’ll take a bogey. 5. Blockade White Tees: Par 4 / 280 Yards / SI 18 Red Tees: Par 4 / 269 Yards / SI 15 A straightforward short Par 4. Longer hitters can reach the green although it isn’t always advantageous to do so. Jack’s Tip: Layup off the tee leaves an easy wedge shot. Another bowl-shaped green means any approach into the heart of it leaves an uphill putt. 30 | www.wcgc.co.uk
Hole-by-hole Guide continued 6. Heather White Tees: Par 4 / 392 Yards / SI 3 Red Tees: Par 4 / 386 Yards / SI 5 A good length Par 4 with a generous fairway. The approach is not as generous, with trouble long, left and right, plus a wicked down-slope at the front of the green. . Jack’s Tip: In summer, land your approach short of the green. In winter, land in the heart of the green. Hit the down slope at the front and your ball will shoot over the back of the green into all sorts of trouble.
7. Windmill White Tees: Par 4 / 330 Yards / SI 10 Red Tees: Par 4 / 308 Yards / SI 8 A dogleg left with a 130 yard carry over a ravine from the tee. The further around the dogleg you go, the easier your approach. Don’t get too ambitious though, the trees will gobble up your ball! Jack’s Tip: This green is deceptively difficult to find with your approach. If you miss it, make sure you miss on the correct side and don’t short-sight yourself.
8. Elcho White Tees: Par 3 / 225 Yards / SI 8 Red Tees: Par 4 / 225 Yards / SI 17 A long Par 3 for men, short Par 4 for women with a tricky green that slopes from front left to back right. Jack’s Tip: There’s plenty of space left of the green and not a lot to the right so that’s definitely the side to miss it on although it does leave a tricky pitch down the green. Make sure you don’t leave this above the hole otherwise you’ll have a knee-knocker of a putt.
www.wcgc.co.uk | 31
Hole-by-hole Guide continued 9. Big Ravine White Tees: Par 4 / 259 Yards / SI 16 Red Tees: Par 4 / 236 Yards / SI 11 Back over the ravine on this short Par 4. It’s a 140 yard carry but once you’re over, just a short shot into a bowl shaped green. Longer hitters can go for this green off the tee. Jack’s Tip: A good birdie opportunity. Another bowl-shaped green which means anything in the heart of it should leave you a nice uphill putt. 32 | www.wcgc.co.uk
10. Long Butt White Tees: Par 4 / 311 Yards / SI 15 Red Tees: Par 4 / 281 Yards / SI 14 A short Par 4 with a tree to the left which you’ll have to navigate off the tee. A good tee shot will leave a short iron into the green. Jack’s Tip: Watch out for the patches of rough just short of the green. Go in these and it’s a tough up-and-down pitching out onto a down-slope.
11. Running Deer White Tees: Par 4 / 382 Yards / SI 4 Red Tees: Par 4 / 366 Yards / SI 4 There is a large oak tree in the middle of the fairway about 200 yards from the tee. Navigate your way around this and you’ll have a short iron into the green. Jack’s Tip: It’s best to go just left of the oak tree off the tee but be careful not to stray too far offline as you will end up in the bushes.
12. Queen’s Mere White Tees: Par 3 / 237 Yards / SI 6 Red Tees: Par 4 / 230 Yards / SI 16 The most testing Par 3 of all from the white tees, Par 4 from the red tees. A long and accurate tee shot is required. Anything slightly off line and you’re in trouble. Jack’s Tip: Everything feeds from left to right as it approaches the green so aim at the silver birch just left of the green. Anything central or to the right may bounce into trees.
13. Sand Pit White Tees: Par 4 / 282 Yards / SI 13 Red Tees: Par 4 / 255 Yards / SI 12 A short, straight Par 4, but needs an elevated drive to clear the silver birches 50 yards in front of the tee. The green slopes left to right
14. Paradise White Tees: Par 4 / 383 Yards / SI 2 Red Tees: Par 4 / 382 Yards / SI 1 Our signature hole. A good tee shot leaves a medium to long iron to a green surrounded by Scots pines. A par here is a just reward.
Jack’s Tip: Try to find the centre/right side of the fairway as approaches coming in from the left are landing with the gradient, making it difficult to hold the green, especially in the Summer.
Jack’s Tip: Keep your tee shot left of centre or risk being blocked by the trees, as the hole doglegs slightly to the right.

Hole-by-hole Guide continued 15. Birches White Tees: Par 4 / 288 Yards / SI 12 Red Tees: Par 4 / 283 Yards / SI 13 A short Par 4 down hill to a green that has a steep down slope at the front, then slopes from back to front. A birdie opportunity.
16. Caesar’s Well White Tees: Par 3 / 130 Yards / SI 17 Red Tees: Par 3 / 120 Yards / SI 18 The shortest hole on the course with a tricky green. You can encounter some tough pin positions on this one.
17. Caesar’s Camp White Tees: Par 4 / 318 Yards / SI 9 Red Tees: Par 4 / 298 Yards / SI 7 A Par 4 up the hill that doglegs slightly to the right. A good drive will leave a short iron into the green which slopes from right to left.
Jack’s Tip: The longer hitters can go for this off the tee. Land your approach short of the green and let it roll down the hill or in the middle of the green where it should stop quickly pitching into an up-slope.
Jack’s Tip: Use the slope on the left of the green to feed the ball back to the middle. Often if the pin is tucked away around the edge of the green, you are better off playing to the heart of it, leaving yourself an uphill putt.
Jack’s Tip: Most approaches will be hit off the up-slope so take an extra club to make sure it gets there.

Hole-by-hole Guide continued 18. Long Hole White Tees: Par 5 / 473 Yards / SI 5 Red Tees: Par 5 / 461 Yards / SI 2 The only Par 5 on the course for men. With a road and ditch 230 yards from the tee, you have the option of laying up and playing it as a 3 shot hole or going for it with a long drive. Hitting over the road may mean you can reach in two, but it’ll leave you with a blind second shot up the hill.
Jack’s Tip: The safe play is to layup and play it as a 3-shot hole. The line off the tee either way is the path going over the road just right of the centre of the fairway.

Visitors Red Top on the Course Wimbledon Common Conservators require that all players wear a plain pillar-box red outer garment for visibility to walkers, cyclists, and horseback. Rangers patrolling the Common are empowered to stop people playing if they contravene this rule. Red garments and waterproofs can be hired in the Golf Shop. Trainers, T-shirts, denim jeans, and tracksuits are not accepted on the golf course. Golf on the Common Golfers must yield to walkers, cyclists, and horseback riders — they have right-of-way. Cycling on the Common is restricted to paths published on www.wpcc.org.uk. Golf ceases at 2pm on Sundays. Other course and clubhouse closures, including for weather, show on www.wcgc.co.uk. Green Fee Tag Required All green fee players and members’ guests must enter into the clubhouse to obtain a bag tag and record minimal contact information. The bag tag shows that you are covered by insurance in case of mishap while playing; contact information ensures you can be reached in case of incident on the Common. Nineteenth Hole You may wear golf clothing in the bar — dry and clean please! Otherwise dress should be smart casual in the clubhouse. No trainers, T-shirts, or tracksuits. Jeans are acceptable, provided they are not of the scruffy variety. Green Fees and Guest Fees See all Green Fee rates, and book tee times, through our website at www.wcgc.co.uk. www.wcgc.co.uk | 39

Swindles
Wimbledon Common Golf Club welcomes Society bookings from Monday to Friday. Weekend bookings may be made with sufficient notice, but we are unable to accept bookings on Bank Holidays. Packages are available for a minimum of 8 people.
On Thursday evenings during summer and Friday middays during winter, we hold informal ‘Swindles’ open to Green Fee and Member golfers, across our first 10 holes. Just roll up at the published time and pay your swindle fee. The Swindle Master will assign you a 10-hole handicap based on your playing handicap or guesstimate, and pair you with other golfers.
To enquire about a Society booking, please call the clubhouse at 0208 946 7571.
The Swindle Master awards prizes to the top
scorers on the day, at their discretion. An endof-season Swindle Party caps off the merriment, with prize categories honouring participation. The Swindles are a great way to play 10 holes, enjoy golf on the Common, and meet other like-minded golfers. The club’s thanks go to Chief Swindler Paul Willatts, who has organised our swindles for many years. Check www.wcgc.co.uk for the latest Swindle dates and times.

What to do in Wimbledon With fantastic bars and restaurants, vibrant nightlife and levels of cultural entertainment appealing to all ages, Wimbledon is more than just a tennis hotspot. There are a variety of restaurants dotted around the borough which will please any and all appetites, and a gourmet food market in Wimbledon Village on Sundays.

Our pubs and bars are open until late on most days and are an ideal place to sit with a drink and socialise with friends. The Windmill Museum takes visitors through a tour of windmills from the classical designs of Persia and Greece through to the modern wind farms.
There are many open green spaces in Wimbledon but of all those Wimbledon Common is the most popular--famous for being home of Elisabeth Beresford’s lovable, fictional eco-warriors the WOMBLES. The Common covers an impressive 1140 acres of woodland including our golf club, and is an incredible area to explore.
Of course it wouldn’t be Wimbledon without a mention of the famous Wimbledon All England Lawn Tennis Club which has been home to the most famous grand slam in tennis for more than 100 years.
Visit the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum which guides guests through the history of the game from its humble beginnings in 1868 to the modern day game.
AFC Wimbledon From its birth in 1889, getting to the top flight, winning the FA Cup and rising again from the ashes, AFC Wimbledon’s story has never been dull. The Dons have returned to Wimbledon in a new stadium in Plough Lane in an astonishing fan-owned rebirth for Wimbledon’s football club.
