Course Tour If you have never played at Woodbridge you are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the pitfalls that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our hole-by-hole tours. Heath Course Hole 1 - Par 4 - 346 Yards A generous opening tee shot. Playing short of the marker pole leaves a second shot from a flat lie to a green which slopes away. For the longer hitter, the green is achievable but a short chip shot is not that beneficial to a sloping green.
12 | www.woodbridgegolfclub.co.uk
Hole 2 - Par 4 - 329 Yards Precision from the tee and finding the fairway is vital. Any shot into the trees on the right may well result in playing out sideways. Judging the distance for the picturesque shot to an elevated green is of the upmost importance since short and long shots here are punished.
Hole 3 - Par 5 - 529 Yards A good testing drive with two very penal bunkers awaiting anything stray and, if you find them, the hopes of making a five become unlikely. Once you have found the fairway the hard work is not over, with a difficult blind shot over the hill. The fairway bunker approaching the green looks closer to the green than it really is! Hole 4 - Par 4 - 330 Yards A short par four where hitting the fairway is a premium. The green nestles in amongst several bunkers and banks, whilst detecting the wind can be tricky, particularly from the south.
Hole 5 - Par 4 - 371 yards One of the hardest holes on the course; a soft dogleg to the right. A slightly pulled tee shot will follow the slope of this right to left sloping fairway and run down into the gorse. The hole lined by trees and gorse makes for a very difficult second shot. The green is perched on a rise, with the front of the green falling away to the fairway.
Hole 6 - Par 4 – 401 Yards Time to ‘open your shoulders’. Aim your tee shot straight down the middle to this wide, flat fairway. Find the middle of the green and, despite how it looks, nearly every putt here is straight so a real test of your putting stroke. Hole 7 - Par 3 - 149 Yards A gem of a short par three. The bunkers and green were re-shaped in recent years and depending on wind direction and pin placement, this hole can play anything from a six iron to a wedge.
Hole 8 - Par 5 - 514 Yards A dogleg right with a wide fairway allows one to go for length over accuracy but, miss the fairway by a few yards, and wiry heather makes for a tricky layup with cross bunkers perfectly placed. For the long hitter, a good drive allows a shot to the green but the fairway narrows considerably as you get close to the green.
www.woodbridgegolfclub.co.uk | 13
Course Tour Continued Hole 9 –Par 3 - 198 yards A downhill par three with a fantastic view of the green from the elevated tee. Everything feeds in from the left hand side with short or slightly pushed tee shots gathered up by the greenside bunker. Leaving the ball on the left side of the green will leave you with a treacherous downhill putt. Hole 10 - Par 4 - 431 Yards Statistically, the hardest hole on the course. A demanding drive as the bunker can swallow up longer hitters. The green is quite narrow and is guarded by bunkers either side. Par is a good result.
14 | www.woodbridgegolfclub.co.uk
Hole 11 - Par 4 - 392 Yards A tee shot where the longer hitters don’t gain an advantage as any well struck tee shot of 220 yards runs out to the bottom of the fairway, leaving a wedge shot to the green. Keeping your approach shot below the hole is a must as this severely sloping green from back to front leaves little chance of a two putt from above the hole, especially during the summer months when the greens are at their quickest.
Hole 12 - Par 3 - 184 Yards Aptly named as ‘Five Winds’, this par three is the hardest green to find out of all the par three’s. Trying to work out the wind direction can play havoc with club selection. Hole 13 - Par 4 - 310 Yards Standing on the tee with a generous sized fairway and a short yardage for this par four this high stroke indexed hole still requires thought. Play your ball up as close to the cross bunkers as you dare gives you the best chance of a birdie with a short pitch from a flat lie.
Hole 14 - Par 4 - 425 Yards A stunning driving hole. Keep your drive as tight to the left of the fairway as possible. Any drive down the middle will take the slope and may miss the fairway right. A second shot into the two-tiered green must find the right level and any slightly wayward approach may find sand. Hole 15 - Par 3 - 188 Yards A picturesque par three surrounded with trouble as the green is guarded by deep bunkers and lies in a stadium of gorse. The ideal shot would be to land over the left side of the right hand bunker, which will bring the ball into the middle of the green.
Hole 16 - Par 4 - 445 Yards The longest par four on the course, usually playing into the prevailing wind. A sloping left to right fairway demands an accurate tee shot and the approach is best suited to rest short of the hole, which will leave an uphill putt. Hole 17 - Par 4 - 400 Yards Another difficult hole with a blind tee shot. Ideally a fade is required off the tee and the longer tee shot benefits from a flatter lie, playing the approach uphill. This usually requires an extra club into the green since anything short can run back some distance.
Hole 18 - Par 4 - 357 Yards A generous driving hole, although for the bigger hitters, the cross bunkers on the dogleg call for a layup. Going into the green with a short iron is made more difficult by the bottom of the pin not being visible so judging distance to the green that is sloping away from play is essential. “One of the most enjoyable courses I have played Mel Watt
www.woodbridgegolfclub.co.uk | 15
Course Tour Continued Forest Course Hole 1 - Par 4 - 401 Yards Aim your tee shot straight at the marker post, although longer hitters may want to stay slightly left of this line. For your approach shot allow for the gentle downhill slope in front of the green. Hole 2 - Par 3 - 178 Yards A cracking short hole, with trouble all around. A severe slope to the right of the green will gather a wayward shot, so play for the left hand side of the green.
16 | www.woodbridgegolfclub.co.uk
Hole 3 - Par 4 332 Yards Although a relatively short par four, the sloping fairway means that an accurate drive will be rewarded with a short iron approach. The green nestles at the top of the slope so try to leave the ball below the hole to leave an uphill putt.
Hole 5 - Par 4 - 389 Yards Favour the left side of the fairway with your tee shot to open up the green for your second shot. Then check your yardage and club to safely hit the front half of the green. Over the back of the green the gorse bushes are very close.
Hole 4 - Par 5 - 553 Yards Aim your tee shot to favour left of centre for the left to right slope. For your second shot aim straight down the middle then hit a positive shot into the green to avoid the deep bunkers either side of the green.
Hole 6 - Par 4 - 444 Yards Aim your tee shot straight at the marker post. The fairway slopes right to left so longer hitters may want to shape the ball slightly left to right to avoid running out of room at the bottom of the hill. For your second shot into the green, aim right of the flag to allow for the right to left slope.
Hole 7 - Par 4 - 335 Yards A very picturesque hole with the backdrop of the Heath course. This sweeping left to right dogleg presents plenty of problems, none more so than the deep bunkers protecting the green. For your approach shot aim left of the flag to allow for the left to right slope.
Hole 8 - Par 3 - 156 Yards A tough par three requiring nothing else than a positive shot into the middle of the green.
Hole 9 - Par 4 - 403 Yards A great finishing hole for this nine. The ideal tee shot is to aim down the left and allow the ball to move naturally down the slight slope and around the tree. For your second shot, aim left of the flag to avoid rolling off the green to the right down the slope. A par here is always a good score!
