The resplendent Manor which serves as our clubhouse was once owned by William the Conqueror and is mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1085. The Course
The Woolston Manor course was designed using the natural features of the land, in particular the river Roding which meanders throughout the course.
As you cross the bridges of the sixth hole you can see numerous types of freshwater fish and in the summer butterflies adorn the second and fifth holes to put you in a relaxing mood at the start of your round. Neil Coles MBE and the renowned golf course architect David Williams designed the 18-hole championship golf course which was opened in the spring of 1994 and since that time it has hosted several large tournaments including the final of the Essex Leslie Wood Trophy on two occasions and the PGA East Region Assistants’ Championship. The course measures 6,510 yards from the white tees with a par of 72. Woolston Manor is regarded throughout the southeast as one of the finest courses with some of the most demanding holes, a true golfing challenge.

The course is built to USGA specifications with a state-of-the-art irrigation system and has excellent drainage, meaning that it is playable 365 days a year. It features generous teeing areas, attractivelymown fairways and true-running fast greens and is always presented in excellent condition, creating an enjoyable experience for golfers of all abilities. It is a thinking man’s course where on some of the holes it can pay to leave the driver in the bag. Knowing how far you hit each club is crucial to avoiding trouble, whether it be staying out of the water hazards that come in to play on 12 of the holes, or avoiding the numerous fairway bunkers, which while always being superbly turned out are best admired from the centre of the fairway.
There are no weak holes and you have to be on your game from start to finish. There are, however, birdie opportunities, such as on the par5 12th, where you can choose to try and cut off the corner and go for the green in two. The risk is if you do not strike your shot sweetly, your ball could find a watery grave. The reward? A potential putt for eagle. The 18th is a memorable finishing hole that is sure to set your pulse racing, with another approach shot over water which has the potential to ruin many a good round of golf! Woolston Manor’s signature hole, however, is the 13th which features an island green for your second shot.

Professional Team
Our Director of Golf at Woolston Manor is Bradley Preston, who has been with us since 2007. Bradley qualified as a PGA Golf Professional in 1994 after spending three years as a student at Kingston University studying a HND in Golf Studies alongside his PGA qualifications. He has gained immense knowledge during his time working within the golf industry, much of it spent in Essex. He was formerly Director of
Golf at Fairlop Waters, before joining the Hainault Forest golf complex, which he helped grow into one of the busiest golf clubs in England. Bradley oversees his own Golf Academy at Woolston Manor and can often be seen imparting his knowledge to pupils on the golf range. He is an adept coach whatever the ability of his student and among the players who come to him for guidance is Brian Davis, an English-born professional who earns his living playing on the ultra-competitive PGA Tour in the United States. The other member of the Professional team is Joe Benson, who is also an expert teacher and a specialist in custom-fitting golf clubs. Joe joined the club from the American Golf Complex in Sidcup, having previously worked at Hainault Forest. Prior to that he enjoyed three years playing on the Jamega Pro Golf Tour, achieving some excellent results including seven top-five finishes.

Here at Woolston Manor we have great teaching facilities, which include a putting green, 75 yard pitching area and bunker. We also have a grass range for individual and group lessons to use. In common with other clubs we do insist on a minimum standard of smart casual dress at all times. Blue denim is not permitted and correct golf shoes must always be worn on the course. Although handicap certificates are not mandatory, we do prefer golfers to be of a sufficient standard for them to be able to enjoy their round and for them not to inconvenience other players when out on the course. We have buggies and trolleys available to hire for those wishing to conserve energy to enjoy their round to the fullest.

The sophisticated Taylor’s Suite can seat up to 150 guests and accommodate up to 400 people for an evening reception. If you are looking for a more intimate atmosphere in which to conduct your business, then why not consider the VIP Room, which can comfortably accommodate 40 people theatre-style or 20 delegates in a boardroom-style layout. The magnificent setting in the Essex countryside lends itself to some spectacular golf, but it is a pretty special place to relax as well. Many events are put on at the club throughout the year for members, but there are also a host of activities arranged which are open to everyone. Comedy Club nights featuring the likes of Bob Mills have been a huge hit, while it will come as no surprise to learn that a sportsman’s evening hosted by local West Ham footballing legends Tony Cottee and Tony Gale was equally well received.
