welcome re rcestershi 1879

Established in 1879, The Worcestershire Golf Club is proud to be the oldest club in Worcestershire and one of the oldest in England. Even today the architectural influence from golf course legends MacKenzie and Hawtreeare still evident, resulting in a wonderful array of 18 challenging holes.

Our club is nestled in the picturesque Malvern Hills which provide a stunning backdrop to the par 71 course, providing a calming influence should your swing be a little out of sorts on any particular day. The Worcestershire is a member owned premier club but is always pleased to welcome visitors to play on our challenging and well-presented course either as individual visitors or in organised groups as part of a society or company day.

We provide everything that a golfer would expect at a well-established club. The Pro Shop stocks a full range of equipment and clothing while expert tuition and ample practice areas offer the opportunity

to work on your game and lower your handicap. During inclement weather, you may also enjoy the recently installed indoor Golf simulator to help sharpen your game. As well as offering a demanding but enjoyable course, The Worcestershire also has a long history of successfully hosting golf societies, private functions, lunches, golf days, conferences and events. We offer a warm welcome, safe in the knowledge that you can enjoy a very modern clubhouse featuring a wonderful restaurant where members receive preferential bar rates within a convivial lounge and casual bar area.

Content history B 6 The Worcestershire Golf Club

Golf has been played in the Malvern area since the late 1800’s, mainly on common land. The Worcestershire Golf Club itself was formed in 1879 and for several decades played on Malvern/Poolbrook Common using several different 9-hole and 18hole course routings.

❶ Shown here are the former Clubhouse, now a private residence, plus some views of golf on the common.

History

re rcestershi 1879

The Move from the Common In the 1920’s it was decided to move from the common and a local farm, Wood Farm, one mile south of the common, was purchased. The Club invited golf course architects Harry Colt of Sunningdale fame, who as a youngster had himself lived in Malvern and learnt to play golf on the common, and Dr Alister MacKenzie, later of Augusta National fame, to submit designs for the new course. MacKenzie tendered the lower price and was awarded the work. In reality MacKenzie’s price was well exceeded and when the club committee asked

❷ Wood Farm farmhouse that became the Clubhouse in 1927 plus some views of play on the original MacKenzie course.

him to explain the significant variance he apparently informed them that it wouldn’t have been exceeded if the committee hadn’t interfered and tinkered with his design so much!

The new Wood Farm course opened for play in May 1927 and play continued on MacKenzie’s 18-hole course until WWII.

B 8 The Worcestershire Golf Club

The Second World War During WWII the land comprising the second 9-holes of MacKenzie’s course was taken over by the Ministry of Defence to build a hospital for anticipated D-Day casualties. In fact, several such hospitals were built within a short distance of the Club. This hospital land was not recovered from the MoD until the early 1970’s by which time it was covered in brick buildings and concrete roadways.

After WWII After WWII the Club played for several decades only over the first-9 of MacKenzie’s original course. Back to 18-holes In time however, most of the hospital buildings and roadways were removed or covered over. Residential housing though, now covered some of the original second 9-holes of MacKenzie’s original course.

To make the course 18-holes again, additional holes, designed by Hawtree and Co, were built and when incorporated with elements of the original MacKenzie first-9 a full 18-hole course was re-established in the early 1970’s. About the Course re rcestershi 1879

The Worcestershire Golf Club course has been on this sight at the foot of the Malvern Hills since 1927. The original layout was designed by Dr Alister Mackenzie but has changed a lot from those days. Please click on the link below to access the aerial view of all 18 holes plus clubhouse www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iDosxMkz34

The course is a mature parkland and now measures 6463 yards at its longest, with small undulating greens. The key to playing well here is to make sure you leave your approach shot below the hole! The men’s Par is 71 with 4 par 3s and 3 par 5s, the only difference for the ladies is that there is one extra par 5 so the course par is 72 measuring 5530 yards. There are a large number of elevated tee shots that give every player a great view of the target area as well the Malvern Hills in one direction and a view to the City of Worcester in the other direction. With 52 bunkers helping to protect the

greens and framing some of the fairways, the course also has a stream running through the sight and is featured in 10 of its holes. The signature hole is the 14th, a very tough par 4 for the men measuring 445 yards and a strong par 5 for the ladies measuring 410. The tee shot is played up over the brow of the hill and leaves a long approach shot up hill into a very dramatic three tiered original Mackenzie green. All in all, the course is a strong test of golf in a fantastic setting and any golfer playing to their handicap can be really proud.

course Content tour 12 B The Worcestershire Golf Club

If you have never played at The Worcestershire Golf Club before you are in for a treat.

Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the pitfalls that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our hole-by-hole tour. Yardage is from the white tees and matches the current match scorecards.

Hole 1 [Par 4 - 321 Yards]

The course starts with a short, slightly downhill par four. Looks can be deceptive as a poorly placed tee shot may catch a left sided bunker trap or become blocked by trees flanking both sides of the narrow fairway. Only a second shot played from the fairway will give a good opportunity to open the round with a birdie and don’t go long as a water hazard awaits at the back of the green.

Hole 2 [Par 4 - 353 Yards]

A rather stern test early in the round due to the uphill nature of the terrain. Only a long drive placed middle to right half of fairway will suffice to give you a chance

of hitting the elevated green in two. (Take plenty of club). On arrival, you will notice quite a contoured green, which at times, depending on pin position can pose quite a challenge to even two putt!

Hole 3 [Par 3 - 163 Yards]

After that stern test comes a more benign par 3, which still must be respected. The sheltered tee position and drop in elevation makes club selection more interesting. Whist entrance to the green is clear for a well hit shot beware of out of bounds left, bunkers flanking the left side of the green and a tree on the right which thinks it is a goalkeeper.

Course Tour re rcestershi 1879

Hole 4 [Par 5 - 500 Yards]

Next comes the first of our three par 5’s on the course and if played carefully can produce quite a few birdie opportunities for the long hitters. You must favour the left-hand side on both tee shot and second leaving most people with a relatively short approach downhill over a deep ditch towards a receptive green.

Hole 5 [Par 3 - 194 Yards]

Take a moment from this elevated tee to enjoy the wonderful vista of the Bredon Hills and Cotswolds. The green is now beckoning in the distance but be careful with clubbing

in this corner of the course, as there may be swirling winds. It will require a precise strike favouring the right side of the green as left will be bunker bound or worse nestled in the trees. Use the bank on the right if need be.

Hole 6 [Par 4–405 Yards]

This elevated tee gives you a full view of the hole ahead and your optimum line would be to favour the right side to open up the green. Big hitters have a wider landing area from the tee but don’t go left and take plenty of club to the back tier, as the green is deceptive.

Hole 7 [Par 4 - 364 Yards]

Regarded by members and visitors as one of the most scenic holes on the course due to the magnificent backdrop of the Malvern Hills. But let’s not get distracted, as there is work to be done even if you smash your drive down the middle. A lower flight second for the better player will cope with the tendency to “spin back” too far on the sloping green. The green has fooled many, as the slope is not always what might be expected and really try to keep your putt below the pin. to be continued

Hole 8 [Par 4 -170 Yards] A sheltered tee position which requires some thought as to what is happening with the wind at a well-protected green. Accuracy and the right club selection normally are rewarded with a reasonable birdie opportunity and sets you up for the final challenge on the front nine. Hole 9 [Par 4 - 434 Yards]

Visually the course begins to open up a little and this hole is one where you may also want to open those shoulders as quite a wide fairway awaits. It is a slight right to left dogleg so the shortest route

is down the left side but carries more risk. The right side leaves a longer but easier approach but watch out for the bunkers.

Hole 10 [Par 4 - 441 Yards]

Again, a chance to savour the view, but the hole ahead will also capture your attention as concentration required to navigate perhaps one of the hardest holes on the course. Only two excellent shots will get you to a long contoured green and pro tip is to leave an uphill putt.

Hole 11 [Par 4 - 376 Yards]

Looks like a straight forward hole and perfection from the tee finds you on the right side of the fairway having avoided the two bunkers. This offers you a second shot into the open mouth of the green.

Hole 12 [Par 4 - 347 Yards]

The tee shot presents lots of options re the club you feel comfortable with but imperative you land left of centre. Straying right or left will find you normally blocked by trees or overhanging branches likely to force an error. to be continued

Hole 13 [Par 4 - 392 Yards]

The hole plays slightly right to left so ideal for the long draw but go through the dogleg at your peril. Shorter hitters still have a chance to reach the green in two with a well-placed running drive provided you avoid two well-placed fairway bunkers. A large relatively flat green awaits your second shot hopefully.

Hole 14 [Par 4 - 446 Yards]

This is our longest par 4 on the course (index 1) and for many a score of 5 is regarded as an achievement. A short drive finds your ball on a downslope facing an elevated green. Big hitters go left of centre to provide an easier second to another very long and undulating green. Again, care is required to avoid a three putt.

Hole 15 [Par 3 - 165 Yards]

Some respite now in the form of a relatively innocent looking downhill short par 3with a generous green and beautiful backdrop. Do not be fooled however as the exposed teeing area, drop in elevation, potential swirling wind and few bunkers may all combine to complicate matters.

Hole 17 [Par 5 - 527 Yards]

Hole 18 [Par 4 - 345 Yards]

This is the first of two par 5’s in a row and a real opportunity for birdie even for the modest striker of the ball due to the generosity of a large fairway and receptive green. Better players in the summer have been known to hit the green in two but for most of us we will be happy to get there in three.

An unrealistic two shotter so with that in mind place the tee shot and second to the left-hand side of the fairway which should ensure a clear approach through the trees and over a pond) to a large green.

Everyone would like to finish on a high regardless of what has come before therefore it is paramount to hit the fairway. Feeling apprehensive is natural (ask Ian Botham) so relax and avoid OOB on the left and ditch on the right to set up an impressive finish in front of the clubhouse. To help take an extra club as you are going uphill but do not go long.

There is always something to suit your handicap, age and golfing desire and at The Worcestershire Golf Club you will certainly not be short of playing opportunities. The Worcestershire can facilitate members who are competitive, and who wish to play in a Club competition, as well as social golfers who wish to play a game with their friends.

You can also join any of the many ‘roll-ups’ that occur most days of the week. We do not use a tee-booking system therefore, social golf can be played by turning up, putting a ball in the chute, and teeing off when it is your turn. Simple, and relaxing.

Whatever your handicap, you can always be accommodated. For couples, our mixed competitions prove very popular, and are often followed by a Sunday lunch. We also hold open competitions, when you can put yourself against members from the other clubs who have entered. These are great social occasions and are also very popular.

If you are fortunate to win a competition, you will often receive a trophy, usually engraved with your name, which remains on display in our brightly lit trophy cabinet within the Clubhouse. As well as your trophy, vouchers are often awarded which can be used in our wellstocked Professionals shop. Details of opens and entry forms can be found on the Club website. Elgar junior Elgar Academy 34 B The Worcestershire Golf Club

In the winter of 2017 the junior set up at the Worcestershire was analysed after it was felt by the Club Professional the pathway and engagement process needed improvement.

In the spring of 2018 a new business model was introduced to help improve the pathway of junior golf into the club and to help engage junior development. We wanted to create a junior academy initially with limited numbers to create a real focus and drive on development. Now we have this strong core this also then enables expansion to the junior academy in future years.

A new branded academy was launched the “The Elgar Academy” along with several key improvements:    

Custom Fitting re rcestershi 1879

There has been a growing realisation in recent times that golfing tuition ought to go hand-in-hand with equipment that allows each player to make the absolute utmost of whatever level of natural talent they possess. Clubs merely bought off the shelf will be of a standard specification but unfortunately golfers are not, coming in all shapes and sizes. The reality is that a

golfer could have a perfectly acceptable technique but still be held back because their clubs are not entirely suitable to their swing. This is where custom fitting comes in, a relatively new phenomenon that allows a set of clubs to be built to marry with each golfer’s individual physique and swing characteristics. Custom fitting is something that we take seriously here at the Worcestershire and we pride ourselves in what we do. We offer a full and extensive range of products all available for custom fitting. This service costs less than you

think and can bring about a dramatic improvement in ball striking. Even the top touring professionals struggle to maintain the same fundamentally sound swing characteristics every time, so it is a lot to ask for the average golfer to do likewise. Customising the clubs to position the golfer in the ideal position for their physical characteristics will train the golfer to address the ball with the correct posture and swing along the ideal swing plane, which all adds up to the correct impact position and better scores.
