The original Andrew Simpson Watersports Centre in Portland opened on the 9th May 2014. Sailing in Portland Harbour gives the benefit of sea sailing, but in a safe and enclosed environment giving versatility to all sessions. Whether you’re new to sailing, wanting to evolve your skills or looking to take your first foiling flight, Portland can cater to all abilities. We are lucky to have a consistent wind and great conditions for sailing all year round, World-class facilities, the best waters in Northern Europe, extensive and high-quality kit and a fantastic team of experienced instructors.

“We had an excellent visit with our year 7 students. Everything was brilliantly organised from the booking procedure to the actual course. The students learnt how to sail in safe waters with friendly and experienced instructors and really didn’t want to leave at the end of the week!” - Nikki Segura, Notley High School

The Andrew Simpson training centres have three main focus areas to help achieve their vision to transform lives through sailing:

Participation - Introducing and retaining people in sailing and watersports. Performance - From beginner through to high performance and regatta support. Community Sailing Programmes - Enabling young people to experience the benefits of sailing.

The Centre is a fully accredited RYA Training Centre, offering a wide range of RYA sailing and powerboat courses, 1 hour taster sessions, instructor training packages, private tuition and race coaching programmes. They also run successful schools & groups programmes and with the Chesil Trust, the popular “Rod Shipley Sail for a Fiver” youth scheme. With a fleet of over 70 dinghies from a variety of world class manufacturers such as Laser Performance, RS Sailing, Topper Sailboats and Ovington, combined with a highly qualified and dedicated team of instructors and coaches, the centre creates a perfect platform for learning. The range of dinghies and experienced race coaches means the centre can offer race coaching for those looking to improve their skill or transition into their next dinghy. The centre is also able to offer the new RYA SAILfoil syllabus, facilitating the pathway into foiling dinghies.

Whether you’re new to the sport or a returning expert looking to fine tune technique or qualify as an instructor or coach, the centre has something to offer you.

The Andrew Simpson Foundation

The Andrew Simpson Foundation (ASF) was founded in memory of, and inspired by, Olympic Gold medallist, sailor Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson. The Founding trustees are Sir Ben Ainslie CBE, Iain Percy OBE and Andrew’s wife Leah.

The Andrew Simpson Foundation works to transform the lives of young people through sailing, enabling young people from all backgrounds to succeed at something they would not previously have thought possible. Through the network of Andrew Simpson Centres, the Foundation can provide thousands more opportunities to get people out on the water and increase participation in the sport of sailing.
