UPPER WARLINGHAM RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB WAS FOUNDED ON 4TH SEPTEMBER 1922 AT WARLINGHAM VILLAGE HALL. NOTICES WERE PLACED IN LOCAL NEWSPAPERS ANNOUNCING THAT IT WAS THE INTENTION TO FORM A RUGBY CLUB AND, AT A GENERAL MEETING ON 20TH SEPTEMBER 1922, UPPER WARLINGHAM RFC WAS DULY FORMED.
The prime movers of this were old members of Leytonstone RFC (now Wanstead) who moved to the district, before persuading Warlingham Village Sports Club to let them have a pitch. It was still being scythed when the first game against Westminster Banks Crocks was arranged, and the team played in the blue and white colours of Leytonstone as they were the only shirts available. Despite having just four players a few days before the game, with 15 minutes to go 16 men had turned up and they went on to take more than 50 points from the aforementioned Crocks!
The White Lion pub in Warlingham was the club’s original committee venue, while the village hall became the changing room. H.D.G Leveson Gower, owner of the Titsey Estate, became president, with Dr Russell Thomas appointed captain and Bernard Thorpe vice captain. The first season was played mainly against A XVs with the exception of Dorking and, surprisingly, Coventry.
Warlingham lost 10-3 to Coventry, but beat Rosslyn Park A XV 20-0 and also played against Harlequins’ A XV. They finished the season having won 17 of their 26 games. Shortly fater, the name changed to Warlingham RFC as it was pointed out that there was no such place as Upper Warlingham – it was merely the name of the train station.
In 1927 the lease for the village hall was due for renewal and a proposal was made that the rugby club would become part of Warlingham Sports and Social Club.

HISTORY
The response was that this was completely unacceptable and Warlingham RFC therefore began looking for somewhere else and considered purchasing land for a new ground. When a suitable site couldn’t be found, Warlingham instead rented a field from Mr Compton’s farm at Hamsey Green. During the summer a clubhouse was constructed thanks to donations from several people –most notably a Mr Arthur Adam.
By 1930 the club was given notice to quit by the new owners of Mr Compton’s farm. Within 18 days a company was formed to raise funds.
Following prolonged negotiations the club, along with the RFU who eventually offered a loan, became owners of the current ground. Arthur Adam again helped out by providing the deposit at very short notice. Many members rallied around and became holders of debenture stock, so enabling Warlingham Ground Ltd to raise the funds to purchase and pay for the ground.
These things don’t change and even today it is the determination and generosity of our members who provided the majority of the funding for our magnificent facilities.

HISTORY
By the start of the war, the club were running four teams with a fifth in the pipeline. In September 1939, after war had broken out in Europe, the Royal Tank Corps took over the clubhouse. During the Second World War, Warlingham RFC played some 25 games, primarily against Army teams. It would be nearly eight years before the club got their ground back and resumed playing properly. During and immediately after the war, the ground was used by the Surrey Agricultural Committee and all but the first team pitch outside the clubhouse had been ploughed up. Despite an agreement being in place, no games were played at the ground until the 1047-48 season as the first team pitch was also ploughed up in the wake of the war.
In 1946 Arthur Adam sadly passed away at his home in Sandbanks, Dorset. He had been made president in 1932 and had done a lor for the club financially.
In the 1950s a competition was held to design a club crest, with wife of Dennis Evans – who would later be club president – Mary Evans winning. It is still used today on our ties, programmes, shirts and new clubhouse.

In 1953 the clubhouse burned down, with the changing facilities all that was left. In the time after, we continued playing and teas and hospitality were offered at the Leather Bottle Pub in Warlingham village.
Ten months later the new clubhouse opened thanks to the hard work of working parties and the enthusiasm of key members of the WRFC committee.
Five years later the changing rooms were added and, in 1965, the club purchased further land to allow for the ground that stands today.
By 1964 the club was running eight teams on a Saturday, and the 1st XV went on a remarkable 36game unbeaten run.
For the 1967/68 season a Wednesday team was formed as well as an occasional Sunday side.
Tours have been an important part of the club’s history, ever since the first one way back in 1938 which saw the team visit Eastbourne and play matches against Lewes, Old Azurians, and Brighton Cruising Club.
Since then, we have toured to various places including Pontefract, Leeds, Falmouth, paris, Amsterdam, Budapest and Prague!
In 1974, New Zealand international Ian Hirst – who played in the famous All Blacks v Barbarians match – played for Warlingham against Old Reigatians in a 16-0 victory.
The club’s mini rugby and junior teams have regularly produced England schoolboys and under-13 internationals.
HISTORY
In 1972, games were organised against several teams as part of the club’s 50th anniversary celebrations. The most notable was a fixture against Coventry, who fielded a side with five full international players in.
Mini and junior rugby started at the club in the 1970s, as a way of providing the players of the future. Parents who had never previously played rugby joined the club, not necessarily to play but to fulfil those vital voluntary roles that keep any club ticking.
More recently, some clubs that we used to play regularly have dropped down the divisions and others have amalgamated. Warlingham have managed to maintain our position as a community club that plays every standard of rugby, entertains guests and welcomes anyone who loves sport. In 2005 the clubhouse was opened, incorporating all of the character of the old with all of the hope that the club has for the future.

THE NEW CLUBHOUSE
THE WARLINGHAM CLUB HOUSE WAS OPENED IN 2005 BY MARTIN JOHNSON
Martin Johnson, England’s World Cup-winning rugby captain, declared Warlingham’s re-built clubhouse officially open on 18th November 2005, to a standing ovation from 300 members and guests attending the club’s opening dinner.
The Warlingham clubhouse has been developed at a cost of close to £450,000, representing the biggest investment in rugby infrastructure in the south-east since England’s famous World Cup victory in Sydney two years ago with the singular exception of Twickenham itself.
“I’d like to congratulate Warlingham on the achievement of getting this splendid clubhouse built and give you all my best wishes in using it to help develop the club in the future,” Johnson said after being accepted as a life vice-president of Warlingham.
“When it comes down to it, this is where we all started the game, it is clubs like this that it is all about,” Johnson said.
As well as attending the club dinner, Johnson also made a special appearance earlier in the evening at neighbouring Warlingham School in front of 300 members of Warlingham’s thriving junior and mini-sections.
The main part of the extension is a huge enlargement of the club’s main room together with a new solid floor. There is also a new second level across part of the building, which will house a gymnasium, treatment room and office. Then a new industrial kitchen has been fitted to enable the club to cater for large events in house. Finally, the overall structure is now covered by a new stainless steel roof, rather than the previous 19 separate ones!
So how was it funded? After several failed attempts at Lottery Funding, the Club had to access other areas of finance but received no gift aid from any organisation.
This is how. £110,000 from Club liquid reserves, £100,000 loan towards the building from the Rugby Football Foundation £25,000 loan from Surrey County Playing Fields Association £25,000 loan (hinged to barrelage consumption) from Greene King £190,000 funded through Club members in loans and donations together with other fund-raising activities. The Opening Dinner evening raised over £20,000
