mary poppins
(U)
Unendingly popular since its multi Oscar-winning release in 1964, Robert Stevenson’s nostalgic musical fantasy stars Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins, the world’s most effective nanny. Hired by George Banks to look after his two young children Jane and Michael, while he’s out at the bank and his wife is off fighting for the Suffragettes, she’s soon teaching them plenty of valuable lessons - from how to tidy your room in a jiffy, to capering on the rooftops with chimney sweeps and taking a fantastical walk in the park. Full of wonderful songs and an effortlessly perky spirit, Mary Poppins is a true classic. This film is part of A Life More Ordinary – our selection of dementiafriendly film screenings. These take place in a relaxed atmosphere where people are welcome to move around and come and go as they please. There will be an interval with tea, cake and live entertainment. the 9TH LIFE OF LOUIS DRAX (15) Jamie Dornan (TV’s The Fall, Fifty Shades of Grey) stars in Alexandre Aja’s atmospheric supernatural thriller based on the bestselling novel.
el sur
(PG)
Víctor Erice’s (The Spirit of the Beehive) 1983 feature, newly restored, is an undisputed masterpiece.
When nine-year-old Louis Drax inexplicably reawakens after a life-threatening accident, he becomes the patient of celebrated neurologist Allan Pascal (Dornan). Intrigued by Louis’ abilities, Pascal is drawn into both the child’s life and that of his fragile mother Natalie (Sarah Gadon), whose affections begin to cloud his judgements. While Louis recuperates in a coma, Pascal sets about putting the mysterious pieces of the Drax family together, the truths of which begin to test the boundaries of fantasy and reality…
Recalling her youth in 1950s Spain and her relationship with her mysterious father, Estrella realises how little she really knew about him. Delicate and subtle, Erice’s drama reveals his abiding fascination with memory and missed opportunity, the passage of time and the links between dreams and reality. The performances are uniformly superb; Omero Antonutti especially charismatic as Agustín, with Sonsoles Aranguren and Icíar Bollaín brilliant as the young and teenage Estrella.

my scientology movie (15) ‘I find that the most inexplicable behaviour is motivated by very relatable human impulses,’ says Louis Theroux as he heads to L. A. for this riotously funny documentary investigation into the Church of Scientology. Following a long fascination with the religion, Theroux won’t take no for an answer when his request to enter its headquarters is denied. Inspired by the organisation’s use of filming techniques and aided by ex-members, he uses actors to replay incidents people claim they experienced as members, in an attempt to better understand how it operates. But then in a bizarre twist, it seems the Church is making a film about Theroux. Suffused with absurdist humour, My Scientology Movie is stranger than fiction.
some like it hot (12)
Billy Wilder’s joyous classic romp stars a gorgeous, pneumatic Marilyn Monroe as the romantic and comic foil for Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon’s hapless, cross-dressing jazz musicians, on the run after they inadvertently stumble upon a gang war. In order to join an all-female band travelling to perform at a Florida beach resort, they don dodgy wigs, practice their best falsettos and set off. Meeting the glorious Sugar Kane (Monroe) they can’t believe their luck; but their good fortune fades when some dangerously familiar faces turn up in Florida...
“Louis Theroux's attempt to get under Scientology's skin is a giddy, Pythonesque delight” ★★★★ Tim Robey, Telegraph

(15)
The triumphant winner of this year's Cannes Palme d'Or, Ken Loach's fierce, emphatic drama I, Daniel Blake is purportedly his last film. With a script by regular collaborator Paul Laverty, it follows fifty-something Newcastle carpenter Daniel (Dave Johns) who, after suffering health problems, seeks to claim benefits but is rejected by the welfare system. Labelled a scrounger when he’s anything but, Daniel befriends Katie (Hayley Squires), a single mother who’s also on the breadline. Almost painfully moving, it’s a stark reminder of injustice in contemporary Britain and a fitting end – if indeed it is – to Loach’s astounding career. Married with children, she divides herself between her family, students and her calamitous mother; until one day, her husband Heinz (André Marcon) drops a bombshell. With new freedoms unexpectedly thrust upon her late in life, Nathalie is forced to rethink her future.

COURTED
in the heat of the night (12A)
(12A)
Judge Michel Racine (Fabrice Luchini - Gemma Bovery) rules his courtroom with an iron fist. His minimum sentence always exceeds ten years and he’s as hard on himself as he is on others. While maintaining order during the heartbreaking trial, he is tempted to resolve an intimate secret history they share; but must face breaking with protocol to do so. Confronting issues of class conflict, racial tensions and religious division, Courted delivers a brilliant dramatic turn from its cast.
