Welcome!
We are proud to announce that Michael Portillo will be joining us in January and will be telling his extraordinary story – Life: A Game of Two Halves. The standard of comedians joining us has been very high and our spring offering is no exception! With Jon Richardson (already a sold out show!) and Andy Parsons bringing their unique view of the world to Ludlow.
Live theatre is coming – but not as you know it! The King Lear – Shakespeare’s Tragedy ... in a pub from Shifting Sands Theatre promises to be hilarious and heart breaking. They will also be running a workshop during the day, Clown – The Art of Play Workshop, but numbers are limited, so it’s best to book early to avoid disappointment! 2017 sees the return of Borderlines Film Festival to Ludlow Assembly Rooms and this year we’re hosting a special weekend of events. Guest speakers, archive films and a treat – live music to a silent film, a must for all film fans. Mario Kart marathons in Oscars on the big screen have been such a success we have decided to bring it back, not once but twice! In half term and in the Easter holidays. We have also booked Morgan & West’s Utterly Spiffing Spectacular Magic Show for Kids (and childish grown-ups) for the Easter break so there is plenty to keep everyone occupied and entertained during Easter. Our ‘live streaming’ fans will not be disappointed with the huge array on offer, including a delayed stream of Harold Pinter’s No Man’s Land starring Sir Ian McKellen & Sir Patrick Stewart, plus live streams of The Tempest, Amadeus, Woolf Works, Saint Joan, The Sleeping Beauty, to name a few. Box Office: 01584 878141
There is also a lot on offer for Music fans this season, from an evening celebrating the life and works of Leonard Cohen with Keith James to a night of Rock ‘n’ Roll Paradise with tributes to all the great rock ‘n’ roll stars. Plus, Emily Portman & the Coracle Band, winner of best original song at the BBC Radio two folk awards and Elio Pace with his fantastic band celebrating the work of Billy Joel. Elio has played for many prestigious bands over the years but more recently, he was the band leader on Terry Wogan’s weekend show on Radio 2. Lastly, a ‘save the date’ for your diaries – Ludlow Race Course have kindly adopted Ludlow Assembly Rooms as their charity for a Charity Race Day on 23 March. I look forward to seeing you soon.

no man’s land the tempest Following their hit run on Broadway, Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart return to the West End stage in Harold Pinter’s No Man’s Land, performed at the Wyndham’s Theatre in London.
A delayed stream from the National Theatre to our cinema screen
On a distant island a man waits. Robbed of his position, power and wealth, his enemies have left him in isolation. But this is no ordinary man and this no ordinary island. Prospero is a magician, able to control the very elements and bend nature to his will. When a sail appears on the horizon, he reaches out across the ocean to the ship that carries the men who wronged him. Creating a vast magical storm he wrecks the ship and washes his enemies up on the shore. When they wake they find themselves lost on a fantastical island where nothing is as it seems. Simon Russell Beale returns to the RSC after 20 years to play Prospero in this ground-breaking production directed by Artistic Director Gregory Doran. One summer’s evening two ageing writers, Hirst and Spooner, meet in a Hampstead pub and continue their drinking into the night at Hirst’s stately house nearby. As the pair become increasingly inebriated, and their stories increasingly unbelievable, the lively conversation soon turns into a revealing power game, further complicated by the return home of two sinister younger men. The broadcast will be followed by an exclusive Q&A with the cast and director Sean Mathias.

amadeus Music. Power. Jealousy.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, a rowdy young prodigy, arrives in Vienna, the music capital of the world – and he’s determined to make a splash. Awestruck by his genius, court composer Antonio Salieri has the power to promote his talent or destroy his name. Seized by obsessive jealousy he begins a war with Mozart, with music, and ultimately, with God. Lucian Msamati (Luther, Game of Thrones, NT Live: The Comedy of Errors) plays Salieri in Peter Shaffer’s iconic play, broadcast live from the National Theatre, and with live orchestral accompaniment by Southbank Sinfonia. michael portillo LIFE: A GAME OF TWO HALVES
In his ‘first half’, Michael Portillo spent ten years working towards his goal of a seat in Parliament. As a Conservative MP in the Commons he quickly rose to power and esteem, to a point where he was favoured as leader of his party and seen as a possible future Prime Minister. But since leaving the House a decade ago, Michael’s ‘second half’ has seen him endear himself to many through his obvious respect for solid workmanship, the creative energy of those who built and operated our great Victorian Railways and the daily toil of the working man. A historian at heart, Michael has made use of the Victorian Railway Guide to thrill millions of viewers as he took us on his historical voyage of discovery throughout the UK, Ireland and most of Europe. Listen to Michael tell his extraordinary story and take the opportunity to ask him questions about both ‘halves’ of his astonishing life. This event includes a post-show book signing.

the songs of leonard cohen 1934-2016
KEITH JAMES IN CONCERT
The heartbreaking announcement of Leonard Cohen’s passing has marked the end of an era. His music befriended an entire generation. An enigmatic songwriter, Leonard was an unflinching character with an exact sense of prose, a wry humour and courage to wrestle with the unspoken, forgiving human frailty with the brush of each line. With a lifetime reputation of performing in this exact way, Keith James brings a concert of Cohen’s amazing material in the most intimate and sensitive way imaginable, exposing the solitary inner strength of his greatest songs in their original perfect form. Amongst a concert of such songs as; Famous Blue Raincoat, Sisters of Mercy, Suzanne and Hallelujah, there will also be songs from You want it Darker released only 10 days before his death – produced by his Son, Adam.

Starfish is the true and incredibly moving story of Tom and Nicola Ray (Tom Riley, Joanne Froggatt), whose love is tested to the limit when their perfect life falls apart. When Tom puts his small daughter to bed one chilly December evening, he has everything he could ever want – the house of his dreams, the life of a writer, a beautiful wife and a second baby on the way. By the next morning all of this is in jeopardy as Tom succumbs to the devastating illness that is sepsis. As Tom and Nic battle to hold their family and marriage together, the strength of their relationship is the only thing that can save them. blow-up
(15)
One of Michelangelo Antonioni’s undisputed masterpieces, his Oscar and BAFTA-nominated English language debut is a mod classic. A hypnotic study of style, perception and reality, this film delves into a particular moment in ‘60s London culture. Photographer Thomas (David Hemmings) works mainly in fashion, taking pictures of exquisitely beautiful models and partying to excess (his character was inspired by David Bailey). But then, after a shoot, he sees an ambiguous image in one of his pictures: has he captured a shadow, or a crime? Full of famous faces, beautifully photographed and superbly sound tracked by Herbie Hancock, Blow-Up is a glamorous, provocative murder mystery and an evocative time capsule to swinging London. We will be joined at the film screening by special guest Peter Burden, editor of David Hemmings’ autobiography Blow-Up and Other Exaggerations.

the general
A lyrical mystery drama, Charles Garrad’s spellbinding feature debut stars Northern Irish actor Colin Morgan (Testament of Youth) and one of French cinema’s most celebrated performers, Fanny Ardant (The Woman Next Door).
Widely considered one of the greatest films ever made and one of the most revered comedies of the silent era, Buster Keaton’s effortless masterpiece sees hapless Southern railroad engineer Johnny Gray (Keaton) standing up to Union soldiers during the American Civil War.
(cert tbc)
A coming-of-age story filmed on location in the south of France and urban England, it centres on a young man, Paul (Morgan) who – compelled by grief and curiosity – is keen to find out more about his late father’s life. Visiting the mysterious, melancholic Madeleine (Ardant), a musician, in her gorgeous, secluded manor house, she reveals some disturbing secrets about both his father’s past and his own.
(U)
When Johnny’s fiancée, Annabelle Lee (Marion Mack), is accidentally taken away while on a train stolen by Northern forces, Gray pursues the soldiers, using various modes of transportation in comic action scenes that highlight Keaton’s boundless, innovative wit and joyful, lighthearted dexterity, to reclaim the train and thereby save the South.
This film screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Charles Garrard, joining us here at Ludlow Assembly Rooms

emily portman
& the coracle band
Emily Portman (Best Original Song, BBC Radio Two Folk Award) presents her third album Coracle with The Coracle Band, a stellar cast of musicians who come together to create an ambitious live show. Recently named ‘Best Album of 2015’ by The Telegraph, Emily’s music will be brought to the stage with longstanding collaborators Lucy Farrell (viola, saw, voice) and Rachel Newton (harp and voice). Joining them is The Coracle Band featuring virtuosic string player Sam Sweeney (Bellowhead, BBC Folk Musician of the Year 2015) guitarist M G Boulter (Lucky Strikes) and classical percussionist Toby Kearney (2006 BBC Young Musician of the Year). With percussion, vibes, pedal steel, electric harp and soaring strings combined with a veritable choir of voices, these musicians will realise the full breadth and beauty of Emily Portman’s finest work to date.

madama butterfly twelfth SUNG IN ITALIAN WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES
The Royal Opera House presents Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, one of the most popular of all operas, with ravishing music and a heart-breaking story of a loving geisha deserted by a callous American husband. Much-loved soprano Ermonela Jaho sings the title role for the first time at Covent Garden, in Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier’s stunningly beautiful production. The exotic imagery of the Nagasaki setting is drawn from 19th-century Western artists’ romanticised views of Japan. Puccini’s music brings alive the birdsong of the morning, the ritual of a wedding and the seduction by naval officer B.F. Pinkerton (sung by exciting young tenor Marcelo Puente) of his young, innocent bride. A live stream from The Royal Opera House to our cinema screen
night
A ship is wrecked on the rocks. Viola is washed ashore but her twin brother Sebastian is lost. Determined to survive on her own, she steps out to explore a new land. So begins a whirlwind of mistaken identity and unrequited love. The nearby households of Olivia and Orsino are overrun with passion. Even Olivia’s upright housekeeper Malvolia is swept up in the madness. Where music is the food of love, and nobody is quite what they seem, anything proves possible. Simon Godwin (NT Live: Man and Superman, NT Live: The Beaux’ Stratagem) directs this joyous new production with Tamsin Greig (Friday Night Dinner, Black Books, Episodes) as a transformed Malvolia. A live stream from the National Theatre to our cinema screen

the king lear shakespeare’s tragedy... in a pub
Three clowns decide to perform their own version of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy and set it in their local - “THE KING LEAR”. Instead of a kingdom, they have a pub! Instead of a King they have a landlord - Mr Lear! Hilarious and heart breaking, The King Lear will unfold using improvisation, physical comedy, vibrant storytelling all linked by nuggets of Shakespeare’s text. There will be irreverence, but no parody. We play with Shakespeare’s ingredients yet remain faithful to his themes. The result - potent, accessible drama!
