PORT FOLIO. LUDOVICA BONALDO PRODUCT DESIGNER 2020
ABOUT ME. I never perceive designing a product as a job, but rather as a service aimed at the benefit of society, specifically targeted at improving the life of the individual and the community itself. In my projects I have always pushed myself to go beyond the simple design of an existing product, creating something different according to the users’ needs. Although suffering from multiple chronic diseases, these have not impaired or stopped me, but in truth have allowed me to improve my knowledge in the medical and food field. The devices I use to improve and manage my health encourages me to keep myself constantly informed about new technologies, increasing my IT skills. This knowledge, acquired outside the university context, allows me to have a general picture of multiple design sectors, which in turn have enriched me not only as a person, but above all as a designer.

SCENARIO. The first step in creating the scenario was to identify the main trends that will influence the society in the coming decades. Among the three macro trends identified, climate change, population growth and globalization, the latter was chosen to be analyzed more specifically, identifying sub-trends on which to build the foundations of the project. Among these, the figure of the prosumer was chosen, and its link with wellbeing and the relationship between health and nutrition.

THE MILLENNIAL PROSUMER. During the research, a strong relationship was identified between the generation of Millennials and the figure of the prosumer, defined by Alvin Toffler as people who produce some of the goods and services entering their own consumption, for example they can be found cooking their own food. This relationship was further confirmed in subsequent interviews and observations carried out, thus identifying the needs and habits of the Millennials in the field of food and cooking.

EXPLORING DIFFERENT CONCEPTS.
Several hypotheses have been made on the possibilities of improvement during the preparation of food through small appliances. Some long waiting times whilst cooking, being able to control it remotely without being present in the kitchen, while other ideas allowed the tra of the food to which we are accustomed, increasing the user’s creativity and potentially his satisfaction with the results obtained. From a since it gave the idea of being the most promising concept and the one that best meets the ideas expressed in the brief.

PROJECT DEVELOPMENT. From the initial concept of the application of osmotic dehydration to a dryer, the product has gradually evolved, repeatedly changing shapes and interfaces so as to satisfy the user as much as possible in relation to the defined brief. The main change was the implementation of infrared dehydration, in order to allow the user to completely dry the food, allowing its long-term conservation.

OSMO, THE WATER DEHYDRATOR. Osmo is a small kitchen appliance that allows the usage of both dehydration by osmosis, which allows you to separately remove the water content from plant tissue, such as fruit and vegetables, and infrared dehydration, to completely dry fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, herbs or flowers and allow their long-term conservation. It is composed of three elements that can be easily detached to store it away, especially designed for kitchens with little space and for those people who move very often and who cannot have objects that are too bulky. Compared to other dryers already on the market, it takes less time and works automatically, so it can be started and left in operation without the need for supervision. It also allows to consume less than half of the electricity due to osmotic dehydration, a spontaneous physical-chemical phenomena.

FOOD PRODUCTS. Thanks to the two types of dehydration, with Osmo it is possible to produce a large quantity of different foods. For example by drying fruit nutritious and healthy snacks are obtained, or it can be used for the preparation of sweets. Dried vegetables allow you to prepare broths, soups and velvety, or tasty flavorings with the addition of dried aromatic herbs. Meat and fish can be dehydrated for long-term storage or to prepare tasty broths and dishes, while cooked meals can be dried to not deteriorate and take up less space, for example during a trip, and can subsequently be rehydrated for consumption. Being an appliance that allows precise regulation of low temperatures, it can be used not only for drying but also “improperly for other preparations, like leavening of dough and preparing yogurt and kefir.

HOW DOES OSMO WORK? Upon the activation of the osmosis, the solution of water and osmotic agent is transferred from the tank to the main body passing first through the valve and through the pipes thanks to a water pump. At this point the water can remain at room temperature or be heated slightly according to the user’s needs, in order to speed up the process or to slow it down and subsequently change the quality of the end product. At the end, the water goes back into the tank through the pipes thanks to a second pump. When infrared dehydration is activated, the coil turns on and heats the food on the trays in order to evaporate their water content. The temperature will remain stable according to the user’s needs thanks to a sensor located in the main body.

– Press & Fold. “Creating a package of drugs that meets the needs of the elderly population and that prevents tampering”
This packaging has been designed to reduce the problems encountered by the elderly during a drug therapy, often for prolonged or chronic diseases. It allows a simple and intuitive use even for those suffering from motor and cognitive difficulties. The main feature is the possibility of reducing it’s dimension as a function of the remaining drug, which gives a visual signal of the imminent exhaustion of the product, thus allowing the user to purchase it again without risking interrupting the therapy.

PROBLEMS.
Taking the elderly user as a reference, the main needs that prevent him from optimally following the therapy prescribed by healthcare pr within the home were highlighted. It is very common for such a user to take drugs for one or more chronic diseases, which require many active ingredients and functions. The result is a high amount of drugs, which are often difficult to distinguish visually and which take up a of indication of the exhaustion of drugs, which leads to interruption of therapy, and the danger of tampering with the packaging due to

TYPES OF PACKAGINGS. The first step for the realization of the project was to research all existing types of packaging, even outside the pharmaceutical sector, to open the possibility of using a type linked to a different kind of market, but which could innovate the world of medicine. The fundamental phase for product development was to research all the possible openings on the market and analyze them in terms of security against tampering and their ease of opening for the user.

PROJECT DEVELOPMENT. The project underwent several variations during its development to arrive at a satisfactory result that would meet the various needs, without forgetting the feasibility and machinability. The starting point was the elderly user and his difficulty in opening the box of medicines, which is very often not reported or equivocal. The matchbox opening was chosen right away, a type familiar to any person, which allows you to easily develop different tamper-proof possibilities. Finally, the possibility of reducing packaging when the drug is about to run out has been added, especially thinking about therapies for chronic diseases.

– “A representative and unpublished product for the Polytechnic of Milan, to be sold both within the Polishop and through the official Amazon shop” Spin Cord was born from the challenge of conceiving and designing a product in less than two weeks that embodies the “Polytechnic Style”. Referring to the coordinated image characteristic of the Polytechnic of Milan, this compact extension cord allows students to use the few electrical outlets made available in the classrooms, essential for carrying out long PC sessions during laboratory lessons. The compact shape allows you to carry it in your backpack without taking up too much space, and the possibility of creating it with a 3D printer, allows you to produce it inside the same university, significantly reducing costs.

STUDY OF THE COORDINATED IMAGE. Being a constraint imposed by the brief, the coordinated image created for the Polytechnic of Milan was first analyzed, available in a document on the main site, and the image that wants to transmit through the products already on sale at the Polishop. Most are branded clothing and stationery items, and not unpublished products created within the Polytechnic itself. At the same time, other shops were analyzed, both from other universities and from museums and exhibitions, in order to draw inspiration and effectively direct the project.

NEEDFINDING. Taking the experience at the Polytechnic of Milan as a reference, various needs were identified by the students, from which different concepts were then devised to meet their needs. In particular, the reduced number of electrical outlets has been noted in some classrooms, where mainly laboratory activities are carried out and for which the use of a laptop is strictly necessary. In these situations, students must use extension cords and power strips, which must be carried in backpacks with reduced capacity.

SPIN CORD. The product consists of a compact extension cord, suitable for use on campus. Its small size is given by the use of a thin bipolar cable and by the particular method of winding inside the shell. It is composed of 4 pieces: two discs manufactured in 3D printing, a notched ring, also printed, and a bipolar extension cord. The use is very simple: with the help of the indentation that allows for a better grip, just turn the ring anticlockwise to unwind the cable, with the help of the pegs inside. The assembly is very simple, and the studied shape, combined with the small size, allows you to build it in a short time within the university laboratories.

POLITECNICO STYLE The customization is vast: the colors of the main body can be changed using different filaments before starting printing, creating various color combinations according to your tastes. It is also possible to apply decorations and logos to the upper side by screen printing or pad printing, or by using stencils and spray paint for simple shapes. The packaging takes up the style already used for the products in the shop. It is made of cardboard with a casket closure. Inside, the Spin Cord is held in place by a shaped polystyrene block, to protect it from any impact.

– Dia:mate. “Design an interface for an application to manage the therapy of diabetic patients and the used devices, taking into account the different types of users involved and their needs.” The design of this interface started from my personal experience with type 1 diabetes, a chronic disease I suffer from, and from information and problems collected from other patients. The multiple inputs received from medical devices (such as sensors and insulin pumps) have been reorganized to give them back in a clear way and significantly improve UX. It was taken into account the needs of the newly diagnosed up to long time diabetics, from the less “tech” people up to the more experienced ones. It is proposed as a customizable basic interface for companies developing medical devices and open and closed loop algorithms, a growing trend in recent years.

AVAILABLE APPS TO MANAGE DIABETES. For a long time there are algorithms that allow the semi-automatic management of insulin delivery through an insulin pump, and gradually start to appear applications to use them directly from smartphone. For now, this apps are developed by groups independent from manufacturers and tend to be very complex in the management and visualization of data. The first apps developed by the companies of these devices are beginning to be made available to patients, but they are still in the embryonic stage and poorly cared for in terms of user experience.
