Dear AMADEUS Guests,

The best pages in our journal are not the ones that we simply read, but rather the ones we feel. In an instant, they take us back to those wonderful vacation moments: to moments with special people, to the stroll through our favorite city, to the sun deck, relaxing on the lounger with a smile on our face.

An AMADEUS cruise brings together the best of these moments, ensuring that your journal is full when you return. Learn more about our cruises in the travel report on our Classic Rhine Cruise from Basel to Amsterdam.

AMADEUS Nova also recently set sail from the Dutch capital’s harbor. Our newest and fresh-

ly-christened ship is now headed toward the Rhine, the Danube and off into the future. Together, we will page through the journal of the ship’s christening.

We don’t actually know what Claude Monet and Joan of Arc wrote in their journals. But we do know that they changed history on the banks of the Seine. We journey back through time to learn more about both of these illustrious figures. Perhaps they will even help you in solving our exciting Cruise Crossword Puzzle. With some brainpower and a little bit of luck, you can win a lovely prize by submitting the right solution.

AMADEUS Nova he Christening of

Forging New Paths Along Those Well Traveled

What do Amsterdam and AMADEUS have in common? That magical mix of deep-rooted tradition and a pioneering spirit that looks to the future. How fitting then that on June 5, 2024 the epitome of this mix, AMADEUS Nova, was christened in Amsterdam’s harbor. With its hybrid drive system, pioneering solar technology, and the latest innovations to reduce air pollution, AMADEUS Nova is cruising full speed ahead towards a sustainable future. At the same time, it is an AMADEUS ship through and through –

WITH A FINE SENSE OF ELEGANCE AND THE ASSURANCE OF ALWAYS FEELING AT HOME ON BOARD.

Which is exactly how the more than 150 guests felt as they came aboard the AMADEUS flagship for the first time and gathered on the sun deck to celebrate the moment it was christened. And as the champagne bottle was broken against the bow, as is tradition, they all raised a glass. To the future of AMADEUS Nova, to all who participated in building it, to its godmother Rendel Müller – Director of Sales and Marketing at AMADEUS Germany –, and to the Lüftner family.

The ship's godmother Rendel Müller makes an inspiring speech to welcome guests before the christening festivities get underway.

Even the sky above Amsterdam seemed to be radiating joy on this momentous day.

THE SUN WAS SHINING, REFLECTING THE EXCITEMENT OF OUR GUESTS AND ENSURING THAT THE SUN DECK REALLY LIVED UP TO ITS NAME.

Ludwig Wenzl – Father of the Austrian Benedictine Melk Abbey – was also present to lead what is likely the most important christening tradition: the blessing ceremony. After that, AMADEUS Nova was finally ready to set sail, off to all its journeys to the wonderful destinations along Europe’s finest rivers.

And since the sea air stokes the appetite, it was then time to turn our attention to the culinary delights on board. The restaurant tables were set and waiting for a gourmet guest experience. While the dining commenced, the small waves of the Amstel swashed against the side of the ship as AMADEUS Nova started its first trip: a round through Amsterdam’s harbor.

When the ship returned late afternoon to dock, our guests disembarked with pride and joy on their faces. Because they had just witnessed the future of the river cruise industry. And because it still felt so wonderfully familiar and full of tradition.

Two days later, AMADEUS Nova set sail on its maiden voyage. Eight days on the Danube, from Passau to Budapest, through the Wachau Valley, where the historic Melk Abbey towers above the Danube and patron Ludwig Wenzl can wave hello.

Just a few days after the big christening event, AMADEUS Nova set off for its maiden voyage on the Danube.

A Journey Through Time long the eine

FOLLOWING THE FOOTSTEPS OF CLAUDE MONET AND JOAN OF ARC

A cruise on the Seine is also a journey back in time – into mysterious events that come to life along the riverbanks. Everywhere you look, you'll find traces of people who have made history. Take Claude Monet, for example, one of the greatest painters of all time. Or Joan of Arc, a national hero in France.

Claude Monet and the light of the world

In nature, there’s always something new to discover. Or something familiar. A water lily pond, for example. Does that make you think of Monet? His Water Lilies series is one of his most famous works.

MONET SPEND MOST OF HIS LIFE HERE IN NORMANDY AND SET UP HIS EASEL IN COUNTLESS LOCATIONS THROUGHOUT THE REGION.

He painted on the cliffs by Le Havre as well as down on the beach, where a wave once washed over him. His painting was ruined – just like 500 others that he himself destroyed. But what remained of Monet is so much more. His 33 views of the Cathedral in Rouen, for example. The avenue of poplars that he painted 23 times at different times of the day. Or the 250 views of the water-lily pond in his garden in Giverny.

Monet’s parents would wonder why the whole world calls him “Claude.” They named him “Oscar.” Monet was born in 1840 in Paris, the city of light. At the time, no one could have guessed how much this light would set the course for his life. Not least his father, a colonial merchant, who expected his son to take over the family business. Due to its struggles, the family moved to Le Havre at the mouth of the Seine. Here, instead of sitting in a classroom, Monet found himself sitting on the cliffs and by the sea, where the light is really something special. Up until then he had only drawn caricatures, but here in Normandy he discovered his love of painting landscapes.

His garden in Giverny was a culmination of this love. It served as an inspiration for Monet for 30 years. The garden featured ornamental flowers, exotic plants, a water garden, and a Japanese bridge. It became his obsession. Soon Monet was not only painting this idyllic scene but also all of his inner self, all of the feelings he experienced while painting.

These feelings are still visible today in his paintings. And when you visit these places on your journey along the Seine where Monet was present with his brush and palette, you too can discover that special light that can only be found in Normandy. In natural landscapes, in Le Havre and Rouen –and in Giverny on Monet’s water-lily pond.

The picturesque cliffs by Le Havre that often served as inspiration for Claude Monet.
Claude Monet’s “White Water Lilies” –a impressionist masterpiece that captures the delicate beauty of his water lilies.

Joan of rc And the Fire in Her Heart

Another illustrious figure you will meet along the Seine is Joan of Arc. A good 400 years before Monet’s time, she had a vision: three saints that appeared to her as spirits and instructed her to free France from English domination. Joan was a teenager and could not read or write, but she knew how to speak and motivate. When she informed Crown Prince Charles, through indirect means, of her visions, one of the most famous stories in the history of the world began.

It all started so peacefully. Joan was born in 1412 in Lorraine to a tenant farming family. She looked after the herds, helped with household chores, and cared for the children in the area. But, in the middle of her idyllic childhood, war broke out. Her village was plundered and set on fire. Joan sought comfort in her prayers. And, one day, her prayers were heard.

“When I was thirteen years old I heard a voice from God that came to lead me,” she told Crown Prince Charles. The Prince ultimately believed her and sent her to the city of Orleans, to the front of the battle with England. When the French army set off on the attack, Joan was riding at the front. Within four days, the war had turned in France’s favor. Joan was instrumental in Charles being crowned king and she became a symbol of triumph.

But light and shadow often come together. When she set her sights on Paris in 1430, she fell into the hands of the enemy. After a long imprisonment, she was condemned as a heretic by the English in the Archbishop’s palace in Rouen. King Charles VII, who had Joan to thank for his crown, abandoned her in her time of need and chose peace with the enemy instead.

On the morning of May 30, 1431, Joan of Arc – 19 years old, national hero, farmer’s daughter, witch –was burned at the stake at the Rouen marketplace. Her ashes were scattered by the executioner over the Seine.

TODAY, JOAN OF ARC HERSELF IS ONE OF THOSE WHOSE VOICE SHE ONCE HEARD: A SAINT.

And when you stroll through Rouen today, take a look at the roof of the Church of Saint Joan of Arc. Its shape rep resents the flames that burned Joan of Arc at the stake. But you can feel Joan of Arc’s pres ence in many plac es. In Rouen. On the Seine. And throughout all of France.

The Church of Saint Joan of Arc in Rouen, whose roof shape depicts the flames of the stake, serves to commemorate her heroic acts.

ON AMADEUS RIVA FROM BASEL TO AMSTERDAM

The great thing about a river cruise is that it begins the moment you leave home. You get to sit back, look out the window, let you thoughts wander, and picture yourself on board discovering new cities.

Day 1: Set Sail from Basel

Stepping foot onto an AMADEUS ship for the first time is like coming home. Although everything is new, it all feels familiar. Up the gangway, stopping at the reception. A smile, the keys, and the journey begins. With AMADEUS Riva from Basel to Amsterdam. Down the Rhine, with a detour on the Moselle. Open the cabin door, and your luxurious quarters greet you. A large, comfortable bed, cozy chairs, and a floor-to-ceiling panoramic window that opens with the push of a button. Soon, the welcome dinner will commence.

All 140 guests have gathered in the restaurant. They come from the U.S., Australia, Spain, Austria, and Germany. The tables are elegantly set, ready for a four-course feast. How about a glass of Sauvignon Blanc, or perhaps you'd prefer a Pinot Noir?

The ship casts off. A final look at Basel from the sun deck. The towers of the Minster rise up to meet the May sky and recede into the distance as the ship begins it journey. Houses turn into meadows and fields, the ship leaves Switzerland behind and enters Germany, France is now only a riverbank away.

YOUR GUIDE TO HAPPINESS Rhine

Day 2: Alsatian Serenity in Strasbourg

Waking up to the soft slapping of the waves is the best kind of alarm clock. The ship sailed through the night. Strasbourg is not far away. And breakfast is almost ready. Until then, the cabin’s expansive bathroom provides ample space to prepare for the day. You head to the buffet and enjoy a wonderful breakfast.

Now, pleasantly full, you are ready to see the city. Off to the excursion: First a trip through Strasbourg in a tour bus, then a walk through the old town. Cozy alleys with half-timbered houses and the Gothic splendor of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame. Back in the 17th century, it was the tallest building in the world. How small you feel looking up at it. And from above, like a giant. Approximately 300 steps lead up to the top. Your reward awaits: a wonderful view of the Alsatian capital with all of its French serenity. You head back down to your spot in the tour boat. Floating along the river Ill, you’ll discover the historic Little France district. Romantic canals, blooming flower gardens, and charming half-timber houses. Now for a stop in the future: Strasbourg’ s European District.

All of this discovering has stoked your appetite. So it’s back to the ship for lunch. Isn’t that lovely?

You can be out discovering a new city and, in an instant, right back at home, on board AMADEUS Riva. After a warm chocolate cake as dessert, it’s time to relax for an hour. In your cabin? On the sun deck? Both are made for daydreaming about the next excursion:

A visit to an Alsatian winemaker, where guests can try all of the vineyard’s best wines. Wine also plays an important role in the French town of Obernai. Its quaint narrow streets and bustling marketplace entice visitors to stay awhile.

Luckily, the ship will also stay until evening. And in the evening while the AMADEUS Duo plays the best country songs in the Panorama Bar for our guests, the ship will cast off, heading towards Germany.

The Basel Minster, a majestic view along the Rhine.
Enjoy the picturesque view of the Ill river, surrounded by charming half-timber houses.

Day 3:

A Romantic Trip Through Time in Speyer and Heidelberg

The city of Speyer – with its fish market, historic city gate, and 1,000-year-old imperial cathedral –is a relaxing trip back in time. Speyer is home to Europe’s largest preserved Romanesque cathedral, whose size and magnificence is a sight to behold. Back on board, the ship will head down towards Mannheim.

On what other kind of vacation could you discover so many cities without ever changing hotels?

AMADEUS Riva is a floating luxury hotel that serves as a home base for trips to discover new parts of the world. And the next one will head towards Heidelberg, where visitors have been known to “lose their hearts.” There are many reasons to fall in love with the city, first and foremost for its castle. Fascinating and surreal, the ruins sit upon the northern face of the Königsstuhl mountain. From up here, you can see far and wide – just like the former Palatinate royalty.

Heidelberg itself is also a sight to behold. A stroll through this city on the Neckar river is like taking a trip back in time. Walk across the Karl-Theodor Bridge, reflect in the late Gothic Church of the Holy Spirit, and visit the historic city hall.

Day 4:

Gourmet Pleasures in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley

A tour of Rüdesheim, a stroll down the Drosselgasse, and a fresh start to a wonderful day. All is still quiet amongst the wine houses and the flower-filled beer gardens. Where is that glockenspiel coming from? From Siegfried’s Mechanical Music Museum. The museum doors are wide open. And your mouth will also likely be when you see the electric pianos, carousel organs, and music boxes. The tour will take you on a trip through the history of mechanical music.

Another piece of music history here is the Loreley song, whose lyrics were written by Heinrich Heine. His inspiration was the Loreley cliffs on the Rhine – a highlight along the way through the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. The valley also features numerous castles, vineyards, and rugged cliffs – an exquisite landscape that you can take in from the comfort of the sun deck.

You return to your cabin and suddenly there is a knock at the door. It’s a treat from the ship’s kitchen: chocolate-covered strawberries. Oftentimes it’s the small things that make for an exceptional trip. On a river cruise, there are ample opportunities to satisfy your curiosity. For example, on an afternoon excursion through the city of Koblenz. The ship docks right in its center. All you have to do is disembark and your adventure begins. First to the city hall, then to the Schängel fountain and Florinsmarkt, where the “Eye Roller” under the clock tower sticks out his tongue when the clock strikes the hour. Then you head to the cable car, up to the Ehrenbreitstein fortress. Along the paths up to the fortress, over which the Prussian army once marched, the clocks turn back centuries. Timeless beauty spreads out before you up here with a view of the city, the Rhine, and the Moselle making its way toward the Eifel.

The next highlight is your dinner on board. The first course is squid carpaccio, followed by duck consommé with quail egg. Wine offerings include Grüner Veltliner and Blauer Zweigelt. Accompanied, of course, by good conversation. The guests at one table include a couple from Chicago, Anne and Ryan. They are traveling with AMADEUS for the first time. And as the beef loin with a truffle-herb crust is served, the wine has put them in the mood for conversation and they tell about Anne's birthday that they celebrated yesterday in the Panorama Bar. It was one of her best birthdays in years. And before you know it, dessert is served: toffee crème brûlée. Head chef Iacob Cristian and his crew have outdone themselves again.

The Karl-Theodor Bridge in Heidelberg, a historical landmark with a breathtaking view of the castle and the old town.

Day 5: Drifting Carefree Toward Cochem and the Moselle

Pull the curtains back and open the window. A clear view of the lovely Moselle river and its curved banks, upon which the winemaking villages are bathed in the morning light. The ship heads towards Cochem and the clock says its time for breakfast.

In the restaurant, hotel manager Nicolescu Ovidiu makes his way through the rows of tables with the utmost concentration. Has everything been prepared according to the guests’ wishes? He nods at a guest and asks another how they are doing. Ovidiu is responsible for ensuring that each and every guest enjoys their time on board. When everything is running like clockwork and he sees that his crew is enjoying their work, then he is happy. And so are his guests. Some ask him which route he will be traveling with next year. They want to be sure he is on board their next AMADEUS cruise.

Cochem may be small, but it has a lot to offer. Surrounded by the captivating Moselle landscape, the town boasts centuries-old wine tradition and a historic imperial castle. During the excursion, you

will discover the secrets of this charming town. Before it begins, there will be a walking tour through the quaint, narrow streets to the marketplace, over which the castle resides. The path then continues uphill, where you will dive into the history of the many-thousand-year-old castle, whose bay windows and battlements tell of the kings of old.

Back on the sun deck, the ship casts off. Leaned against the railing is AMADEUS Cruise Director Alina Radulescu. Cochem is her favorite destination. She always discovers something new in this town. She checks her watch. It’s time for the daily Port Talk. When Alina tells guests what they can look forward to today and tomorrow, the exuberance is palpable. Hushed conversations turn to hearty laughter, murmurs, and applause. Alina is good with people. And oftentimes this turns guests into friends.

An unparalleled view from the Ehrenbreitstein fortress of the Rhine-Moselle river convergence and the city of Koblenz.
Cochem’s marketplace, surrounded by historic half-timbered houses and the town hall, is an inviting location to spend an afternoon.

Day 6: New Adventures in Cologne and on the Ship

In the morning, the Cologne Cathedral casts its shadow. Literally and seemingly endlessly. It's the third-highest church in the world. After a visit to this divine structure, the narrow cobblestone alleys and the lively squares await. And it’s only fitting to sit down and enjoy Cologne’s traditional beer: a Kolsch.

Time to bid adieu to Cologne, the AMADEUS Riva is now making its way towards Amsterdam. And you have time to relax before it arrives. Perhaps with a specialty coffee in the Café Vienna or a cappuccino in the AMADEUS Club. On a rainy day it’s the ideal place to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet in one of the lounge chairs.

But today the sun is shining and the sun deck is calling. You can spend the hours daydreaming and basking in all that you have just experienced. Or perhaps you would rather play a round of shuffleboard? On board, it’s up to you whether you want to seek out relaxation or excitement. We take a glimpse over the shoulder of Patrick Bálasa. He has been an AMADEUS captain for more than 23 years. Even as a small boy he had his sights set on this job. He smiles. Childhood dream fulfilled.

The pleasures on board just keep coming. From the aperitif hour, to a cocktail with the captain and crew, to the gala dinner. Pleasure is always on the horizon – for both the palate and the eyes. Everything the culinary team creates is simply irresistible.

A majestic view of the Cologne Cathedral from the Rhine. An impressive perspective of one of Germany’s most famous landmarks.

Day 7: Zest for Life in Amsterdam and North Holland

Dingeling – another five, six bikes pass by. On Amsterdam’s streets it’s important to watch out for bicycles. Who needs a car here? Certainly not along the Prinsengracht canal, which can be reached from the ship on foot in ten minutes. Ideal to discover this Venice of the North on your own.

Later, an excursion to North Holland is on the schedule. First stop: the town of Edam. Where, of course, Edam cheese comes from. The town itself is idyllic. With small canals, enchanting drawbridges, and a calm that is contagious. Why would you hurry? Take your time and savor it. Just like a good cheese. How is it made in the Netherlands? At stop number two, you will find out. The bus heads to the cheese farm of Alida Hoefe. Here you can try a gouda with chili, an edam with truffle, or one with pesto. No need to choose. You can simply take a few with. The cheese will last almost as long as your souvenirs. You can pick up the next one at our stop in Volendam on Lake IJssel. The promenade invites visitors to take a stroll. Walking along

the colorful wooden houses, stopping here and there at a souvenir store, landing a fish sandwich at a food stand, or simply breathing in the fresh air while gazing at the beautiful sea, which is actually a lake since it is separated from the North Sea by an enormous dike.

During dinner on board in the restaurant, some voices are louder than usual, some quieter. Everyone has their own way of saying goodbye. A table over here is discussing the trip highlights, over there the trip home and how it all could have lasted much longer. All of the guests seem a bit sad at the thought of parting. But it quickly dissipates when a shanty choir takes the stage at the Panorama Bar, belting out the best sailor songs into the microphone.

Later, lying in bed, it seems a shame to close the curtains. Outside, the lights of Amsterdam twinkle. Inside, the bags are packed. Tomorrow morning after breakfast, all of the guests will disembark heading home. It’s hard to say what the best part was. But it’s easy to say that you will be back. Next year. At the latest.

Amsterdam’s charming canals, lined with quaint houses and blooming flowers. Perfect for a boat tour or stroll.

Her appearance in the Panorama Bar every evening to announce the next day’s events always puts guests in a good mood. The joy is evident on their faces and they begin to laugh and dance. She sat down with us to talk about what makes her happy, how she came to work with AMADEUS, and what her favorite city is.

How long have you been working on board with AMADEUS?

Since 2016. I started as a restaurant manager. Some of the crew were of the opinion that I was good with people. So, in 2017, I became Cruise Director onboard the AMADEUS ships.

What is your favorite cruise destination?

Every river is beautiful in its own right. I like the Rhine, the Saar, the Danube, and I love the Moselle and Cochem. Here, time seems to stand still. Whenever I see the castle off in the distance as

we approach, it’s as if I am seeing it for the first time. Those colors when the sun shines, the green, the bridge with its flowers, the blue sky ... the best places are often small and tucked away.

Have you had any special experiences during your time on board?

I have had many. For example, on our Christmas tour, there was an older woman from Germany on board, Elisabeth. Her husband had recently passed away. She didn’t want to be alone over the holidays, which is why she booked the trip. At the end of it she said to me: “This is the first time in a

long time that I was not constantly thinking about how my husband is gone.” We are still Facebook friends. It’s certainly not possible for me to really get to know all 140 guests on board, but if my work has touched one of their lives and given them an unforgettable experience, then I’ve done my job.

How do you manage to excite so many guests on board?

In this job, it’s essential that you like people. It’s challenging to work with people all day long, but most of them recognize all that you do for them. And this recognition goes a long way. I’m always paying attention to how a person feels among the other guests. Some guests prefer a more lively atmosphere and some like it quieter. Last night, I got the Americans to dance. That served as a spark, and suddenly everyone else was dancing too. (laughs)

Where do you go when you yourself have vacation?

My favorite vacation spot is at home in Transylvania at my house in Brasov. I enjoy spending time with my family. I have a four-year-old niece. Home is where she is. When I’m there, we head to the nearby mountains or the ocean. I need that as a counterbalance. No phone, no laptop, just peace and quiet. Then I look forward to my work again.

What is the best part of the day for you?

I wake up before the guests, have my coffee, and plan the day in the peace of the morning. And I also really love seeing how much fun the guests have at the bar.

What do you wish for your future self?

Right now, I’m exactly where I want to be in life and I am happy about it. I would like to continue doing what I enjoy. I would also like to have enough time for myself and my family. As time passes, I notice more and more that its the small things that make life wonderful. My life can stay just as it is.

Cochem on the Moselle – Excursion Director Alina Radulecu’s favorite spot enchants guests with its magical castle, picturesque half-timber houses, and idyllic vineyards along the river.

he Best ouvenirs

Along the Rhône and Saône

Every moment on the journey through beautiful southern France is a souvenir in its own right. But a souvenir that can be packed in your suitcase is, of course, quite a bit easier to bring home for friends and family. We have put together a list of the best souvenirs from the Rhône and Saône – gifts to smell, savor, enjoy, and display. A treat for loved ones at home or for yourself.

Wine

from

What could be a better souvenir from Burgundy than a fruity-fresh white wine from the Château de Pierreclos winery?

The 1,000-year-old castle sits high up on a cliff not far from Mâcon on the Saône. Surrounded by small, organic land plots, the winery’s grapes receive ample sun and nutrients from the granite and limestone clay soil, making for one of Burgundy’s most exquisite wines. In addition to the smooth white wines, the winery also produces wonderfully rich and balanced red wines. On our excursion to Château de Pierreclos, you can try both. And bring home a bottle or two for your loved ones. Santé!

Praline Roses from

Lyon

If life is like a box of chocolates, then it should contain some of these small rose-red delicacies from Lyon. They are the perfect present to give friends or family upon your return. Perhaps you should buy an extra package. For when hunger strikes while you are out and about. The sugared roasted almonds melt in your mouth and make you say “Mmmm” – just like the residents of Lyon have been doing since the 19th century.

Lavender

from Provence

Is there a picture more evocative of Provence than a gentle summer breeze waving through a sea of lavender? And then there’s that indescribable smell – that smell of freedom and joy which also has healing properties. That’s why these little purple blossoms are so highly prized in Provence and are used in making numerous different products. Tea, for example, or ice cream. Lavender is also used in sachets for drawers or closets. Wouldn’t it be lovely to get dressed at home and start your day with the scent of vacation? And if you also want it to bring you a bit of luck, you can lay it next to the entrance to your house.

ruffles

from Grignan

People have been enjoying truffles as a delicacy as far back as ancient Egypt. The truffles in Provence are considered some of the tastiest in the world. All that they need to grow well are the right trees, a special type of soil, and a particular climate. The results are exceptional and can be tasted on our excursion to a truffle farm by Grignan. A great opportunity to grab some more of these outstanding mushrooms as souvenirs.

Kitchen Utensils Made of

Olive Wood

A great way to soak up some of that provincial charm is by strolling through one of the numerous markets. Stumble upon something new, bargain for a better price, and be faced with such a wide range of products that it’s impossible to choose. Or is it? How about some of those beautiful kitchen utensils made of olive wood? They bring a natural beauty into your kitchen and will remind you of your time in Provence for the rest of your life as you bake and sauté. That’s right, the sets really last that long. Their wooden fibers are hard enough to repel bacteria. And, thanks to the light-and-dark grain of the wood, they are also eye-catching pieces on the table or counter. Inaugurate your souvenir with a recipe from southern France.
