Lufkin Panthers defenders D.J. Williams (91) and D’Angelo Hightower (14) converge on A&M Consolidated quarterback Kobe Miller for a sack in the first quarter of their teams’ game Friday night on John Outlaw Memorial Field at Abe Martin Stadium.

A&M Consolidated hangs on to nip Lufkin in thriller By JOSH HAVARD The Lufkin News After trailing by 14 points with less than two minutes remaining, a miraculous comeback left the Lufkin Panthers with the decision of forcing overtime with an extra point or going for the twopoint conversion and the win. Lufkin head coach Todd Quick elected to go for the win. Unfortunately, on a night when the Panthers’ offense was nearly unstoppable, one of Lufkin’s best playmakers was stopped one yard short. Keke Coutee took the ball on a jet sweep and sprinted toward the goal line before the Tigers stopped his dive just one yard short of the goal line, preserving a memorable 42-41 A&M Consolidated win at John Outlaw Memorial Field at Abe Martin Stadium Friday night. “I wanted to give the kids an opportunity to win the ballgame right there,” Quick said. “So we gave it to one of our best players and went for the win. Our offense was really on a roll there, and we just got stopped a little short.” The late stop finished Lufkin’s hopes of a remarkable comeback. With 2:36 left in the game, A&M Consolidated’s Brandon Jackson scored on a 36-yard run to seemingly put the game away, making it 42-28. But Coutee hauled in a nice 55-yard catch from Trey Cumbie to set up a Jamal Jeffery 6-yard touchdown on a screen pass that cut the deficit to 42-35. Lufkin’s Jesus Cisneros then executed a perfect onside kick with Terry Mark diving to get the loose ball and give Lufkin life with 1:40 left in the game. The Panthers took advantage five plays later as Steven Sowell scored on a 7-yard run to make it

Lufkin Panthers Terry Mark (10) and Zac Thompson (9) eye an onside kick late in the Pack’s game against the A&M Consolidated Tigers on Friday night on John Outlaw Memorial Field at Abe Martin Stadium in Lufkin. Mark came up with the ball and the Panthers scored to make it 42-41, but Lufkin came up short on a two-point attempt to win the game. 42-41. After a Lufkin timeout, the Panthers elected to go for the win. But Coutee was stopped just short of the goal line, and a final onside kick was recovered by A&M Consolidated, giving the Tigers the win. “Our kids are hurting right now and we understand that,” Quick said. “But what we have to understand is right now we’re a lot closer to being a good team than we have been all year. They worked their butts off and at some point things will start going our way.” The game was a track meet for most of the night as the teams combined for 83 points and 1,046 yards of total offense. Kobe Miller threw for 324 yards and two touchdowns on 23-of-31 passing. Derrick Dick hauled in eight passes for 116 yards and Kerry Thomas had seven receptions for 105 yards and a score.

Jackson had 142 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries as the Tigers finished with 499 yards of offense. Lufkin’s offense finished with 547 yards. Cumbie threw for 290 yards and two touchdowns on 24of-37 passing. Coutee had 104 yards on nine receptions and Jeffery caught eight passes for 69 yards and a touchdown and added 62 yards and a touchdown on four carries. Sowell had another big night with 139 yards and three touchdowns on 24 carries. “The offense got in the zone there for a little while,” Quick said. It was a rough start for the Panthers as they fell into a 14-0 hole just eight minutes into the game. On A&M Consolidated’s first drive of the game, Daniel Zivney took a short pass from Miller and ran in for a 22-yard touchdown,

giving the Tigers a 7-0 midway through the first quarter. Lufkin went three and out on its second drive before Miller hit Thomas on a perfect fade pass for a 17-yard score, extending that margin to 14-0 with 3:54 remaining in the first quarter. Lufkin drove to the A&M Consolidated 2 on the following drive before a fumble on fourth down killed that drive. The Tigers were unable to capitalize as they missed a field goal attempt that would have given them a threescore lead. The Panthers’ offense finally got going on the next drive as Cumbie hit a wide open Jeffery for a 27-yard score, narrowing the gap to 14-7. After another defensive stop, Cumbie hit Mark for a 56-yard pass, and three plays later, Sowell scored on a 1-yard run, making the game even at 14-14. A&M Consolidated took a lead

just before the break as Miller was hit while making a throw. But the deflected ball went to Thomas, who went 52 yards to eventually set up a Jackson 7-yard run, giving the Tigers a 2114 lead at the half. In the first half, the teams accounted for nearly 600 yards with the Tigers gaining 293 yards and Lufkin gaining 281. Miller threw for 245 yards and two touchdowns on 17-of-21 passing and Thomas had 98 yards and a touchdown on six receptions. Cumbie threw for 154 yards and a touchdown on 13-of-20 passing and Sowell ran for 82 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. In the second half, A&M Consolidated moved the lead back to 14 points Miller scored on a 13yard run, making it 28-14 after the first drive of the third quarter. But Lufkin was able to erase a 14-point deficit for the second time, using a formation in which Jeffery lined up in the backfield, providing an extra threat. Jeffery scored on an 18-yard run to narrow the gap to 28-21. On the drive, he had 48 yards on three carries. Lufkin’s defense came up with a stop on the next drive as Deandre Hooper came up with an interception. The Panthers then drove 84 yards on 12 plays with Sowell scoring on a 14-yard run to tie it at 28-28. A&M Consolidated responded with a Jackson 2-yard touchdown that made it 35-28. Jackson added his third touchdown of the game on a 36-yarder that appeared to put the game away before the late rally. Lufkin (1-4) has the week off before traveling to face The Woodlands at 2 p.m. Oct. 12. Josh Havard’s email address is jhavard@lufkindailynews.com.

Madisonville rolls to 41-12 win over Diboll By CODY L. HAVARD Sports correspondent DIBOLL — Antwoine Curtis ran for 122 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries and Jaylen Smith threw for 127 yards and four scores as the Madisonville Mustangs rolled to a 41-12 win over the Diboll Lumberjacks here Friday night. Madisonville’s defense held a struggling Diboll offense to 188 total yards on the night. Diboll freshman Dez Shelley ran for 75 yards and a touchdown on just

nine carries and quarterback Kevin Hurley threw for 91 yards and a touchdown on 9-of-22 passing as the Lumberjacks fell to 0-5. The game was a defensive affair early as Madisonville got on the board midway through the first quarter on a Grant Smith 12-yard reception from Jaylen Smith. Grant Smith would finish the night with four receptions for 90 yards and three touchdowns. The game stayed at 7-0 until 25 seconds remained in the second quarter when Jay-

len Smith got his second touchdown pass of the night, this one an 18-yarder to Rikelian Wiley that made it 14-0 at the break. The Mustangs expanded that margin to 21-0 early in the third quarter on a Curtis 16-yard touchdown run. Diboll’s offense showed signs of life four minutes later on a 37-yard pass from Hurley-to-Raive Sheppard that cut the margin to 21-6 after a bobbled snap on the extrapoint try. But Madisonville took control of the game after that as Jaylen Smith hit Grant

Smith for a 34-yard touchdown and Donald Roundtree scored on a 13-yard run to up the lead to 34-6. The ’Jacks got their second touchdown of the game on a 3-yard Shelby run to cut the deficit to 34-12. Madisonville finally put a cap to the scoring as Grant Smith scored on a 34yard touchdown reception from Jaylen Smtih to make the final 41-12. Huntington’s Jermichael Brown did his part for the Red Devils as he ran for 110 yards on 16 carries and also caught a 72yard touchdown pass in the losing effort. ing before Troup broke through for 28 unanswered points in the second quarter. Troup got on the board as Brandon Hearon hauled in a 20yard touchdown pass from Lynch to put Troup on top 7-0. challenges, foremost a group of athletic players. “You put the film on, and man, it jumps out at you, all of the great athletes who are very fast and execute very well on offense,” the coach said. “The defense flies to the football. It’s a very challenging game for us at home (tonight).” The win over Montana State was the third game in four outings that SFA’s offense surpassed 500 yards in total offense. One big

difference between that game and the previous three was SFA’s defense excelling on third down. SFA held Montana State to 2-of-14 conversions on third down. The defense also forced four turnovers, all interceptions. Prairie View A&M’s offense hasn’t been anything close to electric, but the Panthers have had their moments of success moving the football. The Panthers lost a scoring duel lo Southern 62-59, a week af-

ter scoring just 3 points in a 28-3 loss to Texas State. Prairie View A&M’s wins are against Texas Southern and Alabama A&M. Running back Courtney Brown rushed for 116 yards in leading the Panthers to that win, although Alabama A&M had 501 yards in offense. Prairie View A&M scored all 28 of its points in the second half, 21 in the third quarter. Kevin Gore’s email address is kgore@dailysentinel.com.

Corrigan rolls past Crockett By KEVIN ALEXANDER Sports correspondent CORRIGAN — A stout defense and a lethal running game propelled the Corrigan-Camden Bulldogs to a decisive 54-17 victory over the Crockett Bulldogs before a homecoming crowd Friday night. Corrigan benefited from strong outings by Addison Kirkland, with four scores, and Keegan Mitchell, who had a huge night, racking up 207 yards rushing, a touchdown and a 72-yard interception return for a score. Crockett struck first on a 25-yard field goal in the first quarter by Antonio Arcivar. But Corrigan-Camden reeled off the next four scores starting with a 33-yard touchdown pass from Hayden Armstrong to LaKendrick Moore. The kick from Armstrong was good to give Corrigan the 7-3 lead. Kirkland then ran for a pair of scores followed by failed extra points to put Corrigan-Camden up 19-3 in the second quarter. The first of those runs was set up by an 80-yard run from Mitchell. Then padding that lead was Mitchell himself, with a 28-yard-run followed by a Malyk Johnson run for the 2-point conversion to bring the score

to 27-3. Crockett narrowed the gap on a 16-yard Case Robinson touchdown pass followed by an Arcivar kick to close the deficit to 27-10. But that was as close as Crockett would get, as Corrigan capitalized on a 3-yard run by Carlos Inguanzo followed by a failed PAT and a big 72-yard interception return from Mitchell followed by a Johnson run for the 2-point conversion to put the nail in the coffin before the end of the half with Corrigan up 41-10. Kirkland rounded out the scoring for Corrigan on touchdown runs of eight and nine yards in the third and fourth quarters, respectively. Crockett closed out the scoring on a 40-yard touchdown run to bring the final score to 54-17. Notables for Corrigan were Mitchell with 12 carries for 207 yards, including runs of 80 and 42 yards, Johnson, with six carries for 69 yards, Inguanzo, with six carries for 52 yards and Kirkland with eight carries for 41 yards. Armstrong threw a pair of passes for 75 yards with Moore catching the 35-yard touchdown pass and Dylan Parker bringing down a 42-yard catch. Chamar Wiley-Harris rushed the ball 18 times for 83 yards for Crockett on the night. Corrigan-Camden (4-0) hosts Center at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
