Lufkin’s Steven Sowell stiff-arms Longview’s Kodeh Loyd during Friday night’s season opener at John Outlaw Memorial Field at Abe Martin Stadium. Sowell ran for 115 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries in the Panthers’ 44-14 win.

Lufkin showcases explosive offense, stifling defense in season opener By JOSH HAVARD The Lufkin News After three straight losses to the Longview Lobos, the Lufkin Panthers decided enough was enough. With the third-ranked Lobos in town for the opener, Lufkin dominated in every phase of the game, scoring 37 unanswered points on its way to a resounding 44-14 win on John Outlaw Memorial Field at Abe Martin Stadium. The Panthers looked like a team ready to put the past behind them as the offense moved the ball at will, the defense shut out the Lobos for the final 28 minutes, and Keke Coutee made big play after big play in the senior’s first win over the team’s biggest rival. “This felt good to get one against them,” Coutee said. “It felt good to come out here and play together as one and get a game like this. We’re not surprised at it, but we don’t want to dwell on a game like this. We’ve got a long way to go.” Coutee finished the night with eight receptions for 122 yards, which included a 38-yard scoring

strike from Trey Cumbie. But his biggest play came in special teams when he scored on a spectacular 85-yard punt return on the final play of the first half. The play gave Lufkin a 31-14 lead, and the Lobos never came close to threatening after failing on an onside kick attempt to start the second half. “Any time Keke gets the ball in his hands, there’s a chance good things are going to happen,” Lufkin head coach Todd Quick said. “That was a huge play for us going into the half. It was like a reverse of last year when Longview took the game over before half.” Cumbie was efficient running the offense as he completed 18-of-22 passes for 235 yards and two touchdowns. Steven Sowell led the ground game with 115 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries. “Everybody made the plays when they were called upon,” Quick said. “Trey made the right reads, and nothing really seemed to get to him.” ANDY ADAMS/The Lufkin News On defense, Lufkin took Longview’s best shot Lufkin Panthers head coach Todd Quick, center, and wide receiver early when the Lobos drove right down the field on Terry Mark, left, celebrate the Pack’s 44-14 victory over Longview during the team’s postgame huddle Friday night on John Outlaw SEE LUFKIN, PAGE 2C Memorial Field at Abe Martin Stadium.

Eagles fly past Lumberjacks By cody L. havard For The Lufkin News DIBOLL — New Caney running back Marte Allison rushed for 88 yards and five touchdowns on 15 carries to lead the Eagles to a 36-14 win over the Diboll Lumberjacks in the season opener Friday night at Lumberjack Stadium. The game started auspiciously for the Lumberjacks. Attempting a rushing play from their own 1-yard line, the Diboll offense was pinned in the end zone by the Eagles for a safety, making the score 2-0 with 8:13 left in the first quarter. Allison scored the first of his touchdowns with a 1-yard plunge to cap off a 48-yard drive with 5:42 left in the first, giving New Caney a 9-0 lead. Diboll got on the board for the first time this season on a 2-yard rush by JaQuon McCloud for a 9-7 score with 10:24 left in the first quarter. With 7:10 left in the second quarter, Allison scored his second touchdown on a 4-yard rush. A failed extra point kept the score at 15-7. The Eagles furthered their lead to 22-7 when Allison scored his third touchdown on a 2-yard

New Caney increased their lead to 36-7 with an Allison 8-yard

PALESTINE — The Westwood Panthers took a 43-20 win over the Huntington Red Devils in the season opener here Friday night. The first half left the Red Devils reeling with Westwood outrushing the Devils 225-105. Kaigen Baker scored on a 2-yard rush in the first quarter to make it 6-0. Westwood stayed on the ground, ending their second drive with a 10-yard touchdown from Ryan Cernoch to up the lead to 12-0. The second quarter was just as fruitful for the Panthers on a pair of rushing touchdowns. Baker marched in from 13 yards out while Cernoch added another score with 1:57 left on the clock, making it 24-0. The game had a different tone in the third quarter, with the teams being more evenly matched. SEE HUNTINGTON, PAGE 2C

Rangers cruise past Astros, 13-6 HOUSTON (AP) — Michael Choice wasn’t able to get a hit in his first three games since rejoining the Texas Rangers following a stint in Triple-A. For him, the fourth game was the charm. Choice had three hits and he and Rougned Odor both hit three-run homers as the Rangers cruised to a 13-6 win over the Houston Astros on Friday night. “He just needs to relax and trust his abilities,” manager Ron Washington said. “Let the ball travel like he did tonight and do his best to put the bat head on it instead of trying to force things.” The Rangers were up by two in the fourth inning when Choice launched his ninth home run into the Crawford Boxes in left

field to push the lead to 6-1. Odor connected in a five-run seventh inning with a shot to the seats in right field to make it 13-1. Adam Rosales and Elvis Andrus added two RBIs each for the Rangers, who have the worst record in the American League and have won just five of 14 meetings with the Astros this season. Ryan Rua made his major league debut and became the 59th player the injury-decimated Rangers have used this season, tying the major league record set by the Padres in 2002 and 2008 and Indians in 2002. He got his first hit with a single in the seventh inning. Scott Baker (3-3) allowed six hits and two runs in 61⁄3 innings for his second straight win.

’Dogs topple Tigers By CHRIS ESPINO For The Lufkin News CORRIGAN — Malyk Johnson and Keegan Mitchell combined for 376 rushing yards and the Corrigan-Camden Bulldogs got the 2014 season off to a strong start with a 60-40 win over the Centerville Tigers on Friday night. Johnson ran for 198 yards and a touchdown and Mitchell had 188 yards and three touchdowns to lead a Bulldog offense that rushed for 506 yards. That was enough to offset a talented Centerville team that also had a good night with 448 yards and 40 points. After Centerville got on the board early, the Bulldogs began to pull away when Lakendrick Moore had a pair of short touchdown runs that were sandwiched around a Mitchell plunge to make it 22-7 early in the second quarter.

Centerville bounced back to narrow the gap to 22-13 before Johnson broke free for a 44-yard touchdown run that made it 3013. Centerville scored just before the half to make it 30-20. Corrigan-Camden got back on the board with a five-yard touchdown run by Mitchell. Centerville had the answer with a touchdown run of its own, making it 38-27. The Bulldogs finally took control of the game as Moore scored on a 10-yard run and Mitchell exploded for a 63-yard run, upping the margin to 54-34. The Bulldogs eventually went up 60-34 on a Sammy Martinez two-yard touchdown run before Centerville closed out the scoring with a short touchdown run in the final minute of the game. Corrigan-Camden (1-0) hosts Groveton (0-1) on Friday night. Groveton dropped a 72-14 decision to Trinity on Friday night.

their first possession and eventually took a 14-7 lead with 4:20 left in the first half. But after that start, Lufkin turned the tables on Longview, holding the Lobos to 353 total yards and no points in the second half. “Good things happen when you get faster and stronger,” Quick said. “I was very pleased with the way the kids played, how hard they played and how they tackled.” Tylan Miller led Longview with 177 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries and Dezmond Chumley threw for 95 yards on 6-of-15 passing with one interception. The Lobos got off to a fast start as Chumley hit Emmanuel Gordon for a 52-yard pass to set up Miller’s 2-yard touchdown, giving them a 7-0 lead. Lufkin had an immediate answer as Cumbie had a key 18-yard run on third down to set up Blake Johnson’s 10-yard touchdown run, knotting the game at 7-7. The Panthers built on that momentum when Bronson Massie hit Chumley on a throw and Jacob Mark picked off a pass to give Lufkin good field position. Four plays later, Sowell scored on a 7-yard run to give the Pack its first lead at 14-7. The Lobos had an immediate answer as they drove 73 yards on 10 plays with Chumley diving in from 1 yard out to tie it at 14-14 with 4:20 left in the first half. But the Panthers finished the first half with a flurry, scoring 17 points in the final two minutes of the second quarter to take control of the game. The Panthers appeared to miss out on a chance to take the game back over when a spectacular 61-yard touchdown reception by Coutee was called back with a holding call. That only delayed Coutee and the Panthers. A few

plays later, Cumbie connected on a 38-yard touchdown pass to Coutee, putting the Pack on top for the second time at 21-14. Lufkin’s defense came up with another big play as Domanique Hartsfield recovered a fumble at the Longview 28. The Panthers stalled three plays later before Javier Montes easily connected on a 42-yard field goal that made it 24-14. Then with time running out in the first half, Lufkin’s defense came up with a stop and called a timeout with 13 seconds left to give Coutee one final shot at a big play. He came through in a big way, fielding the punt on the ground and making several Longview defenders miss before sprinting for an 85-yard return that made it 31-14 at the break. In the first half, Sowell ran for 80 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. Cumbie completed his first nine passes, finishing at 9-of11 for 81 yards and a touchdown before the break. His top target was Coutee, who caught five passes for 58 yards and a touchdown in the first half. Miller led Longview’s attack with 89 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. Longview attempted to get back in the game by starting the second half with an onside kick, but Tyler Abney alertly recovered it to give the Panthers good field position. Seven plays later, Lufkin delivered another punch to the Lobos when Sowell scored from a yard out to make it 37-14 early in the third quarter. The Panthers put the final touches on the win when Terry Mark caught a perfect 29-yard scoring strike from Cumbie to make the final 44-14. Lufkin (1-0) will be back at home on Friday when it hosts the Tyler Lee Red Raiders at 7:30. Josh Havard’s email address is jhavard@lufkindailynews.com.

Westwood’s lead went to 30-0 on a Cernoch 2-yard run. Huntington got on the board when quarterback Brent Loggins passed into traffic to a lunging Jeremiah Robertson for a 30-yard score. Loggins walked in the conversion, narrowing the gap to 30-8 with 5:06 remaining in the third quarter.

Westwood answered with a 62yard catch and run from Colton Frazier to D.J. Hicks, making it 36-8 in the third stanza. The Red Devils scored on a 4-yard run from Loggins and a 10yard rush from Jeremiah Robertson to make it 36-20. But Baker scored on a 1-yard run to seal the win. Huntington (0-1) plays at Hardin on Friday night.

Lufkin Panthers senior running back Steven Sowell stands dejected on the field after the Longview Lobos rallied to beat the Pack 43-42 in a Class 5A Divison

II Region II bi-district playoff game Friday night at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium in Tyler.

Lufkin drops 43-42 thriller to Longview By JOSH HAVARD The Lufkin News TYLER — A season that was filled with heartbreaking losses had an excruciatingly heartbreaking finish as the Lufkin Panthers let an early 28-0 lead slip away and the Longview Lobos scored a touchdown and twopoint conversion with 31 seconds remaining to seal a 43-42 win at Tyler’s Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium Friday night. Steven Sowell scored on a 3-yard touchdown with 3:34 remaining in the game, giving Lufkin a 42-35 lead. But Longview’s offense, which scored touchdowns on its last five possessions, had the final answer as Tylan Miller caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Dezmond Chumley with 31 seconds remaining. Rather than going for the tying extra point, Longview elected to go for the win as Chumley hit a wide-open Jordan Wyatt for a 4342 lead. Lufkin’s last-ditch effort fell short as the Lobos celebrated a Class 5A Division II Region II bidistrict contest while also avenging the Panthers’ earlier 44-14 win. “The kids fought hard like they have all year,” Lufkin head coach Todd Quick said. “We just had to make a play, and we didn’t do it.” Longview was led by Chumley, who threw for 305 yards and four touchdowns on 17-of-26 passing. His main target was Wyatt, who had five catches for 83 yards. Miller ran for 126 yards and three touchdowns on 22 carries and Jamycal Hasty had 92 yards on eight carries and also caught a 24-yard touchdown pass. Lufkin was led by Sowell, who

The Lufkin Panthers defense, including helmetless linebacker Javeon Johnson (26), stopped Longview’s Jamycal Hasty on the 1-yard line as time expired in the first half of their bi-district playoff game Friday night at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium in Tyler. ran for 205 yards and two touchdowns on 31 carries. “He had a great game and he’s done that all year,” Quick said. “I know he’s hurting right now, just like all the teammates. But he’s a great running back.” He also threw a perfect 37-yard touchdown pass to Demarrea Houston that seemed to swing the momentum in Lufkin’s direction in the third quarter. Trey Cumbie threw for 231 yards and three touchdowns on 15-of-23 passing. Terry Mark

had seven receptions for 95 yards and two touchdowns and Keke Coutee had 117 yards and a touchdown on six catches. In the early going, it looked like Lufkin would have a repeat of an earlier blowout win over Longview. The Panthers seized momentum early in this one as the Panthers took the opening kick and drove the length of the field with Cumbie rolling to his left and hitting Coutee for a 34-yard touchdown that put the Panthers on

top 7-0. Longview’s next drive ended when Jayveon Johnson recovered a fumble, but the Panthers were unable to take advantage with a score. After Lufkin’s defense responded by forcing a three-andout, Mark caught a 19-yard touchdown reception from Cumbie to make it 14-0 with 20 seconds left in the first quarter. Facing a fourth-and-seven on the following drive, Lufkin hit Mark over the middle for a completion. When the defender went for the interception, Mark spun away and easily ran into the end zone for a 21-0 lead with 7:09 left in the half. Longview’s next drive ended with another fumble and the Panthers were able to take advantage with a Sowell 11-yard touchdown run that made it 28-0 with 4:12 left in the half. Longview finally found its offense on the next drive with Emanuel Gordon hauling in an 8-yard touchdown reception from Chumley to narrow the margin to 28-7 with 2:28 left in the half. After a Lufkin punt, the Lobos appeared poised to get back in the game before the half as they caught Lufkin off guard with a 77-yard reception from Chumley. With Longview facing a second-and-goal from the 1-yard line with five seconds left, the Lobos were on the verge of cutting the margin to two scores. But Lufkin’s Josh Driver stopped Longview just shy of the goal line, letting the time run out with Lufkin still holding a 28-7 lead. In the first half, Lufkin gained 291 total yards with Sowell running for 121 yards on 16 carries.

Cumbie threw for 162 yards and three touchdowns on 11-of-15 passing. After a slow start, Longview had 163 total yards on its last two drives, finishing with 240 yards in the half. In the second half, Longview got off to a quick start with a wide-open Hasty catching a 24-yard touchdown pass from Chumley to narrow the gap to 28-14. Lufkin had the answer. Facing a fourth-and-three, the Panthers went with a halfback pass and Sowell delivered with a perfect 37-yard strike to Houston that made it 35-14. Longview wasn’t fazed as it answered with 21 unanswered points. Wyatt hauled in a 10-yard touchdown pass from Chumley to make it 35-21. Hasty brought the Lobos within seven on a 3-yard touchdown run with 1:46 left in the third quarter, making it 35-28. Lufkin was driving to make it a two-score game once again when Longview’s Ameron Dean intercepted a pass at the Lobo 12. The Lobos then put together a nine-play, 88-yard drive with Miller scoring from eight yards out to bring them even at 35-35. Lufkin didn’t go away with Coutee taking a forward pitch from Cumbie and running 47 yards to set up Sowell’s 3-yard touchdown run with 3:34 remaining, giving the Panthers their final lead at 42-35. But in the end, Longview was just too much for the Panthers to overcome. Lufkin finishes the season with a 6-5 record. Josh Havard’s email address is jhavard@lufkindailynews.com.

Price Carlisle’s 30-13 win ends Groveton’s season By MARY LANKFORD For The Lufkin News BULLARD — The Price Carlisle Indians blanked the Groveton Indians for three quarters Friday night en route to a 30-13 win in their Class 2A Division I Region III bi-district playoff game here Friday night on the strength of a 240-yard, two-touchdown performance from quarterback Colin Gray. Gray, who was just 7-of-12 passing for 51 yards, rushed the ball 28 times on the night

and kicked things off with a bang with just under 10 minutes to go in the first quarter on a 60-yard touchdown run followed by an Angel Garza extra point to put Price Carlisle up 7-0. Garza added to that lead on a 28-yard field goal just before the end of the first quarter to make it 10-0 in favor of Price Carlisle. After a scoreless second quarter for both teams, Gray added to that lead late in the third quarter with an 11-yard score followed by another Garza field goal — this

one a 35-yarder — two minutes later to put Price Carlisle up 20-0. Groveton finally got in on the action with just over five minutes to go in the contest on a 15-yard pass from Glenn Thornton to Saul Chavez followed by a Nick Martinez kick to make if 20-7 Price Carlisle. But a 36-yard Garza field goal increased Price Carlisle’s lead to 23-7. Less than a minute later, Ricardo Pereles ran an interception back for a score to put the game out of reach for Price Carlisle at 30-7 with just over two minutes to play.

Groveton tacked on a 26-yard touchdown pass from Thornton to Colton Alsbrooks and the 2-point conversion try was fumbled, leaving the final 30-13 Price Carlisle. Leading the way for Price Carlisle in addition to Gray was Bryce McGowan, with five catches for 53 yards. Notables for Groveton were Dekedrick Odom, with three carries for 12 yards, Saul Chavez, with seven catches for 154 yards and Thornton, who was 19-for-43 passing for 273 yards with three interceptions.

Lumberjacks beat Mississippi College NACOGDOCHES — Jacob Parker and Thomas Walkup combined for 27 points to lead Stephen F. Austin to a 75-49 season-opening victory over Mississippi College on Friday night. Parker scored 14 points, and Walkup, who had 13 points, pulled down 11 rebounds. Dallas Cameron, who made 3 of 5 3-pointers, added 11 points.

Harden’s shot lifts Rockets past 76ers HOUSTON — James Harden scored 35 points, including an off-balance layup with 9 seconds left, to lead the Houston Rockets to an 88-87 victory over the winless Philadelphia 76ers on Friday. The Sixers led by one point before Michael Carter-Williams bounced the ball off his foot and out of bounds to give Houston the ball. Harden powered through the lane to hit the game-winner.
