1. What were the assumptions and where did the SLP project come from? The implementation of the SLP project was initiated by an extensive analysis of road incidents recorded by municipal monitoring, in particular with the participation of pedestrians and cyclists. Also, my own observations made during the parallel field tests contributed to the topic being raised. Modern research and construction works in the field of improving the safety of drivers and passengers have focused mainly on the problems of minimizing the effects of a vehicle collision with a pole for a wide range of speeds. The impact of the pole-lighting arrangement on other road users, including pedestrians, cyclists and scooter users, was not analyzed. The topic of integrating the luminaire with the pole in the context of safety was also not discussed. The main assumption of the SLP project was to extend the concept of „lighting poles with passive safety features” to the entire lighting system, including the issue of the lighting fixture and the protection of all road users. Based on the above, a new concept of „Safe Lighting Point” has been defined.

2. What would be the stages of the project and how important was the testing at the training ground? The project was carried out for over two years (from June 2019 to the end of 2021). It consisted of several stages. As part of the first stage – solutions for the lighting fixture were developed – and this was where LUG was responsible. in the second stage – research was carried out on the construction of steel and aluminum poles by Elektromontaż Rzeszów S.A. Third stage was devoted to experimental research consisting of testing the prepared solutions as part of crash tests. The key issue in the research - from the point of view of the expected results of construction work - was the analysis of the mechanism and scale of defragmentation of the elements of the lighting system consisting of a pole with an inspection cover, a boom and a lighting fixture resulting from the vehicle hitting the pole. The field tests were carried out on the professional crash test track of the Institute for Road and Bridge Construction in Inowrocław. The ammount of research equipment on the testing ground allowed for the full analysis of the individual phases of the vehicle collision with the pole, the defragmentation of the lighting system components and the scope of the impact of the dismembered SLP elements on the environment.
3.To what extent have the assumed goals been achieved?
5. How does the SLP solution improve road safety?
As a result of completed research and development works an innovative lighting set was developed that improves safety not only for the driver and the passengers of the vehicle hitting the pole but also significantly affecting the safety of other road users who can be exposed to dangerous, life and health threatening injuries from detached pole elements and. Finally, the design of the Safe Lighting Point includes five new design solutions that were submitted to the Patent Office of the Republic of Poland. In this matter, the Safe Lighting Point is much more than just a pole with elements with passive safety.
The SLP solution is the first on the market to take into account the safety of unprotected road users in the event of a speeding vehicle hitting a lighting pole. For different variants of the speed of the car collision with the lighting pole, its components either do not defragment or the range and destructive effect of the parts of the lighting set detached from the pole are definitely limited. It is particularly desirable to use an innovative SLP solution in urbanized urban areas with intense pedestrian traffic and in places of accumulation of pedestrians - pedestrian crossings. Hence, additionally - in the last phase of the research work carried out, the SLP solution for lighting pedestrian crossings was refined.
4. What were the challenges associated with the developed BSLP solution?
6. Czym wyróżnia się rozwiązanie BPO i czy istnieją na rynku podobne rozwiązania, które zakładają poprawę bezpieczeństwa pieszych w kontekście kolizji samochodu ze słupem?
Safe Lighting Point is a novelty on the market of broadly understood road lighting. The developed structure should on the one hand retain all its functionalities ascribed to both the lighting pole and the lighting fixture, and on the other hand, it should also perform other additional functions. It should be remembered that hitting the pole by a speeding vehicle generates complex mechanical loads throughout the entire structure of the pole, especially in the section of the boom with the lighting fixture. A detailed analysis of this phenomenon allowed for the implementation of a multi-stage mechanism for damping mechanical forces acting on the components of the pole. The developed Safe Lighting Point fulfills two tasks: it limits – where it is needed – the phenomenon of dismemberment of the lighting set and minimizes the destructive impact of detached elements on the close environment of road users, especially pedestrians and cyclists.
The SLP solution is the first solution of this type on the road and street lighting market. The current Polish procedures for testing lighting sets in terms of the safety of road users participating in the vehicle hitting the pole focus on the safety of the driver and passengers. It should be emphasized that these participants in a collision with a pole are additionally protected by car safety systems, such as: airbags, appropriately selected materials lining the interior of the vehicle, the structure of the vehicle skeleton absorbing part of the impact force, etc. constructional lighting sets that improve pedestrian traffic safety and the methodology of verification of these structures, especially in terms of the impact of the lighting set elements on all road users.

Pedestrian crossing Łukasza Cieplińskiego Avenue, Rzeszów SLP solutions as the first in Poland were installed on Łukasz Ciepliński Avenue in Rzeszów. A pedestrian crossing in the city center connected with „Jałowego” street and „Sokoła” street is a sensitive place where collisions and accidents often occurred. Pedestrians crossing the street must go through eight lanes separated by an island. SLP solutions ensured the appropriate light intensity and widened the surface of the waiting zones and thanks to a special structure pole integrated with the luminaire will reduce the effects of traffic incidents.
This crossing as a result of the reconstruction of Cieplińskiego avenue carried out years ago, is very wide. A pedestrian must go through several lanes, get to an island, and again cross several lanes. The crossing was very dengerous, we had a lot of road incidents over there in the past. That is why it was so important to illuminate it and we did it thanks to „Elektromontaż”. Now pedestrians are much more visible. This task is also a symbol of what we strongly focus on in our city today, i.e. improving pedestrian safety.
