ZIELONA GÓRA

Infrastructural projects that directly improve the relations between residents and their city are our specialty. LUG Light Factory has been illuminating bicycle paths, pedestrian crossings, sidewalks and city parks for years, at the same time developing both design competences and dedicated products. In each of the urban luminaires: URBINI LED, URBINO LED or AVENIDA LED, we have enclosed our experience and knowledge regarding the safety and quality of lighting. We are happy that the consistently implemented program of city lighting modernization in Zielona Góra has been awarded by the Polish Association of Lighting Industry. By granting the first prize for „revitalization of lighting in the urban space of Zielona Góra: Wine Hills (lighting of the Palm House and the Vine Park) and illumination of the palace ruins in Zatonie”, the jury highlighted the unique character of lighting, expressing both through professional selection and placement of lighting luminaires and the fact that an extraordinary lighting effect was accomplished. The lighting not only harmonizes with the architecture, but also constitutes its soul. This is a brochure, that introduces the winning project and the LUG Light Factory workflow, thanks to which, by means of lighting, we managed to incorporate the idea of intelligent placemaking in a city. We invite you to read!

On January 1, 2015, the city of Zielona Góra merged with the municipality of Zielona Góra, becoming the sixth largest city in Poland in terms of area. This significant development opportunity meant specific challenges for the region aimed at integrating the city’s area, both in the physical and social dimensions. We are proud that we can actively participate in building a new city identity, providing lighting technology in projects that connect its residents, providing the impulse for further development. In 2018, we lit a number of strategic investments in the Municipal Functional Area of Zielona Góra. 3 urban parks, key sections of bicycle infrastructure with bridges, architectural monuments, and meeting places, which we present here. This is another step in the consciously built strategy of the city, in which revitalization of lighting is of particular importance.

ZIELONA Gร RA Mak ing a smar ter place to live Light of the highest quality, combined with the professional support of LUG designers, is the perfect complement to any urban investment that is part of the conscious creation of a safe and modern space. The process of creating such a valuable space is called placemaking, which stands for a creative approach to designing places. Not only buildings and infrastructure, but also positive atmosphere in the city. This approach to urban investments in Zielona Gรณra made it possible to achieve effects that positively affect the quality of life in a dynamically developing city. The purpose of LUG design works in the case of the Palm House was the illumination of the building by flooding all of the greenery with luminaires mounted on a special construction inside the facility. The luminaires have also been mounted on the outside of the building on five meter poles, and placed on the building to highlight its construction. These two illuminations connected in the DMX system and realized with MODENA RGB luminaires with parameters that allow them to function at a temperatures of up to + 55ยบC,

because those are the temperatures reached in this type of application. DMX system control has been programmed to get the effect of tonal transitions of the entire color palette as well color animation. This illumination treatment had to emphasize the advantages of the Palm House building - very important for Zielona Gรณra and its residents for whom it is a place for social gatherings for residents as well the most popular place visited by tourists.

The Gęśnik Valley park is the longestpark in Zielona Góra, measuring around three kilometers, with the largest number of attractions for children and seniors: a rope park (290m) with numerous obstacle courses; beach and park gym; bicycle learning square; Orlik pitch; separate square for outdoor events and a catwalk. The project was realized with park lanterns using LED technology. System lighting control has power reduction, it monitors technical parameters of the

luminaires and is manageable in real time by website from computer or mobile device. All fittings are designed so that they do not emit light into space in compliance with the Dark Sky directive. Stretching between the new housing estates of Zielona Góra, Gęśnik Valley park integrates residents with the city in an attractive and functional way, restoring its historical recreational areas.

Interesting fact The Maugscht (former name of Gęśnik) stream flowing through the historic valley crossing one of the most important wine-growing district of the city and provides a calming microclimate. It is here where residents of the city relax in the restaurant on hot days, ladies in hats enjoy boating in the pond, and the nearby Wine House became one of the most recognizable pre-war themes of urban postcards.

Until recently, the neglected city park in the center the city was primarily associated as dangerous area. At almost 20,000 square meters almost everything has changed. The park was completely refurbished with new sidewalks, paths, benches, plants, lanterns, bollards and city monitoring. The once neglected pond gained special footbridges and

wooden piers, as well as a floating, illuminated fountain. In the recreational lawn there are permanent deckchairs and the whole park has been equipped with a drinking fountains for people and animals as well baths for birds and bats. The city’s strict center has gained a new meeting place, giving a positive impulse for change throughout the area.

ZATONIE PALACE

16

Zielona Gรณra , a placemaking project.

Palace in Zatonie, until 2015 located outside of the borders of Zielona Góra, was burnt in 1945 and had been delapidated since then. In 2018 it regained some of its splendor, becoming a tourist attraction. Revitalization of the Zatonie Palace is an example of the benefits of a compatible connection of the city with the municipality. Thanks to illumination in LED technology the place has gained a new quality. Now various types of outdoor events and concerts with an RGB illumination

show in the DMX system take place. The palace in Zatonie has become one of the largest attractions of the enlarged Zielona Góra. The Palace is a destination of bicycle trips, and bear’s garlic which grows nearby, attracts many nature and culinary lovers. Although the renovation of the palace is over, the renovation of the park is still underway. Recently, the workers unveiled the historical scenic axes. The Orangery which stands next to the palace will also be renovated.

#DMX

Interesting fact The history of the palace dates back to the end of the 17th century, when it was built as a residence for Baltazar von Unruh. In the first half of 19th century it fell into the hands of the famous duchess Dorota Talleyrand - Perigord, owner of, among others, the palace in Żagań. The duchess arrived to Zatonie in 1840. On her initiative the residence was rebuilt in classicist manner. The Orangery was built by well-known German architect Peter Lenne who also designed the nearby park. The lighting of bicycle paths has been done as part of the task „Construction of bicycle infrastructure on the Municipal Functional Area of Zielona Góra.” The paths have been divided into three stages: the central part, the northern one and southern - a total of over 40 km of new routes, of which a large part are in the New Town. Because of the diverse location of paths, each of them had a different lighting class, and thus different mounting heights and parameters of the luminaires that the specifications provided. All of them were made with the URBINI LED luminaires, except for the socalled entry zones or strategic places, where the URBINO LED luminaire was used. Additionally the central part assumed the

reconstruction of the viaduct on Wojska Polskiego street, one footbridge-bicycle footbridge connecting Zielona Strzała with Aglomeracyjna street, along with illumination. Another engineering object illuminated with LUG luminaires within the framework of the Zielona Strzała course has become a newly built footbridge and bicycle footbridge on Sikorski street. The path on Łużycka street was made as a part of the same task using the AVENIDA LED luminaire. Zielona Strzała is a part of a strategic plan aimed at connecting the modern infrastructure to urban areas, at the same time promoting ecological responsibility and a healthy lifestyle.

Interesting fact On August 21, 2018, the first city bike rental system in the province began to operate. With 36 self-service rental stations and 360 bicycles it became a sensational attraction for the citizens.

PROJECT Krystian Jóźwiak LIGHTING DESIGNER

HOW IMPORTANT A LIGHTING PROJECT IS EXPLAINS

Leader of the lighting renovation project in Zielona Góra, which was awarded with the Best Lighting Investment of 2018 title by the Polish Lighting Industry Association.

1. Which standards should be used in lighting projects of bicycle paths?

of use of the surroundings. The aesthetic aspect is also important - the cycle path illumination should adequately integrate the lighting of the surrounding areas by choosing the appropriate color temperature, illuminating the correct surfaces and by limiting the maximum light directed to the upper hemisphere, so that the lighting does not disturb the natural landscape.

The lighting of bicycle paths should be designed in accordance with the applicable PN-EN 13201-2 standard: „Road lighting. Part 2: Lighting requirements’, in which the lighting classes P1 to P6 are defined. On the basis of the table with the criteria, we choose the appropriate lighting class. This is a solid starting point, the basis for further design work.

3. What are the most common mistakes in the design and construction of this type of lighting?

2. How important is a good project and what should characterize it?

A common mistake in the lighting of cycle paths is failure to comply with the applicable standards or improper and incorrect selection of the road class. The use of suitable lighting luminaires and optics plays an important role. The right optical system must be used in order to reduce glare. The entire route should be illuminated evenly so that the light creates a lighting corridor. It is important to take the nature of the space in which the path runs into account - by adjusting the color temperature where the path is a coherent space with, for example, a promenade. A common mistake is the lack of taking into account the relationships with other objects, roads and environment - it’s a matter of experience.

A good lighting project should perfectly fit into its surroundings, being at the same time something special - it should take into account but also reflect the character of the place. Intersections, Cyclist Service Areas, pedestrian crossings , etc. occur on cycle paths - all these conflict areas must be illuminated so as not to reduce the safety and comfort of cycling, while offering users something extra. Therefore, a good lighting project of the bicycle path is characterized by: a properly chosen road class, type of luminaire, optics, appropriate lighting of conflict zones and additional places, lack of glare. Lighting should make it possible to recognize people even from a very long distance, at the same time eliminating the glare effect introduced by other road users. Lighting should also improve the safety of all road users and aid their field orientation. In order to limit the number of collisions on routes crossing, with obstacles and other users, the luminaires should be precisely installed in the correct places. Furthermore the lighting should facilitate the readability of addresses, routes and other markings - which increases the field orientation and improves the comfort of the road. The arrangement of the luminaires relative to the road axis is also of particular importance. If possible, the luminaires should be placed in an orderly manner so as to create a leading line. Thanks to it, the cyclist has information from a considerable distance, e.g. about changing the travel direction. If the right order of luminaires is maintained, a disturbance in the leading line may suggest that we are approaching a zone where you need to stay alert. Another aspect of bicycle path design is light pollution. By introducing artificial light, whether in the urban tissue or in suburban areas, we must ensure that our installation does not worsen the conditions

4. Experience and passion, that is why we love to design bicycle paths. Infrastructure projects that directly improve the relations between residents and their city are our specialty. At LUG Light Factory, we have been illuminating bicycle paths, pedestrian crossings, pavements and city parks, for years, simultaneously developing both design competences and dedicated products. In each of the urban luminaires: URBINI LED, URBINO LED, or AVENIDA LED, we have included our experience and knowledge about the safety and quality of lighting. We are happy that the program of bicycle paths development implemented in Zielona Góra brings the inhabitants of the city closer to the idea of eco-mobility, creating a positive atmosphere to leave the car in the garage and use bikes for everyday travel around the city.
