SCKETCHBOOK “Catita” was first created to be a printed piece, such as a comic book or a graphic novel. This plan shifted in 2016 when I hired motion graphic artists to animate it. The following are some pieces that illustrate this cartoon’s creative process since its beginning until today: some of my original sketches done on paper upon which the cartoon is based, as well as some palette tests, scenarios and characters created so far for this animation.
SCENARIOS USED FOR THIS SHORT MOVIE ROUGH CUT In the next pages you can see the arts currently being used by the animators, showing the main scenes of this rough cut from different angles. This short movie occurs entirely in one location: the local bar’s sidewalk, even if, sometimes, some shots/boards show one of the character’s POV.
Storyboard to become this cartoon’s “intro/outro”
FROM MY SKETCHBOOK
showing the moment the bar opens to its clients while all types of vehicles come and go in the busy street it is located at.
Meat grilling over the BBQ grill: Catita’s main object of desire. All scenarios (and its pieces) were drawn by hand in graffiti pencil and/or ink, and later they were used as base for the digital animation.
Edmar (the BBQ cook) doesn’t have a problem in charging extra money for the BBQ if the client is a “gringo”, so, when he sees one, he just rolls out a poster of the menu, translated by him.
From afar, it looks like a regular bar in the historic neighborhood of a city. But when looking closer ‌
....its becomes clear that all sorts of illegal actions happen in plain sight as part of its daily routine.

Even though the storyline we have been animating is entirely “shot” in front of the bar, a few other scenarios have already been created to be used in the future as backgrounds/locations for new scenes (and/or episodes, if “Catita” becomes a series). The next pages will show Joal’s house (our side view), Tissa’s closet, Alzira’s kitchen and the circus where Tissa works along w/ some of the original paper sketches and the palette tests (with vibrant colors inspiring a sweet and spicy visuality) done so far.

If this cartoon will be developed as a series, some of the scenes would be inside and/or in front of Joal’s house, located not far from the bar. These drafts show it in a inclined street to illustrate the geography of the neighborhood and as a place the locals must walk up and down the steep hills, and from where the city can be seen from above.
CHARACTERS In this short movie rough cut, just 6 characters are shown (Edmar, Alzira, Joal, Tissa, Shedli e Catita) but there are 7 more characters in development, meant to be used in future scenes and/or episodes.

CATITA
The main character, Catita, is inspired by a real street dog that has an unusual and intriguing behaviour when interacting with people.

If this cartoon will be developed as a series, at some point, the character Shedli (who is just a tourist/visitor in the current short movie) will reveal to Tissa that, back in his country, he is an established circus owner himself.
