BAMAKO DESIGN RESEARCH CENTER
school: Washington University in St Louis professor: Zeuler Lima course: Architectural Design IV site: Bamako semester: 9th year: 2013 group: Luisa Simoni, Kelsey Alex, Lucas Rodrigues
The project consists of the proposal for a Research Design Center in Bamako, Mali. For a couple who runs a store of African cultural elements in Barcelona and owns a site located close to the Niger River. The principles of this project were to use most of local material and labor and make it possible to be built in phases. The Center is designed in hammed earth walls and wood roof, referring to the traditional architecture of Mali. The building works as a sequence of exhibitions and workshops spaces, where you can see the pieces produced and also the production process. Each workshop has the own meeting/classroom and a common kitchen and restrooms. The workshops are focused on fabrics/texture and jewelry, music instruments and pottery. On the back of site there’s a great common outdoors area for cultural and musical presentations.
