ISSUE ZERO

HEY THERE If you’ve happened to stumble upon issue zero of PERISHABLE GOODS, then welcome in. We’re here with the aim to help people consider mortality, and we promise you it’s more upbeat than it sounds. In our neck of the woods, the stigma attached to discussing death and everything in between is outdated. And, whilst considering it’s truly the one thing we all have in common… why not have a pint over it? That being said, we get why you might not want to. We get that sometimes it’s the anger, or the guilt or the sheer ‘I’m just f*cking bricking it’ mentality that makes us want to think of anything besides death. That’s why our mission is to provide you with a space to consider, share, reflect, discuss and take our message as you please. We’re a non-judgemental, approachable and shareable tool to help you and those around you tackle the topic of not being here one day. Our message is inspired by the fact that young males are yet to have a space to voice their concerns and curiosities around the topic of death in a positive way. All words in the stickers of this zine are from Young Males regarding their reflections on the topic, stemming from those who have grieved the loss of physical and non-physical parts of their everyday, and from those who are yet to experience loss at all,

but are scared for the day it comes. Still, we hope you can see that this mission isn’t just for males alone. This is to help everyone feel more comfortable sharing thoughts around death. We’re building a community here, which is why we’ve also taken a chunk of inspiration from the good old trusty corner shop. You know… the smiley small talk, sharing of remarks over the isles, being 20p short but still being allowed your favourite chocolate bar. All them good memories from today and yesterday. A place of no-judgement and camaraderie. This is what PERISHABLE GOODS stands for. We’re just here to try and make this conversation a bit more approachable for everyone, through the tool of sharing. This zine is made for you to make use of it as you please. Tear out the mural illustration and use it as a poster, stick our stickers around town or on your boss’s desk, pass them on to your friends to share, OR… just burn the whole lot if that helps you and your feelings towards the ‘end’… (although, we will prefer if you found a different way!)

LETS GET STUCK IN

THE STICKERS

P.S. it’s not just us, the planet’s dying too. So, we’ve printed all our stickers on FSC certified recyclable paper and the leftovers are put to good use too. You and us both can stick guilt free.

Stick the message round town, down the pub, at work, wherever you please, Lets help others have these conversations too

A Time and a Place There is somewhere I go, where the place is the same. Some things change but not the name. The street name will always be the same, as will the silhouettes standing in lines on either side on the street, watching with their window-paned eyes every person each house meets. Inside such walls, souls loved and laughed, and lived life even when it was hard... in these places of people I will never know. I have never worn anyone else’s shoes and neither will you but the least you can do is admire what is true. As times change the form of the currency evolves from metal to plastic to phone. But the exchange of words remains the same and revolves around the closest within our herds.

Within our days, when our minutes pass we all feel the sand slipping through the hourglass. Hold on, pause it right there! Let's not get too heavy. Life is a song to sing and we choose our medley Take this moment and leave your shoes in the grass. Let your hair down! Run like you'd just been let out of class like a mad dog or a clown! See the colours like you did before. Look up and down, from the sky to the floor Discover it all again Feel it like the first time you felt the rain. Ignore the grey, and feel each drop drain from the sky and into your skin Feel the reactions rippling within, the corners of your mouth being pulled by a hand with invisible strings Written by Grace Reeves

A lover of life! Her reflection on life and death.
