Psicología de la Actividad Física y el Deporte Desarrollo Histórico La Psicología de la Actividad Física y del Deporte tiene como eje básico y fundamental a la Psicología Científica, de la cual se constituye como un área de
aplicación. Por otra parte, esta disciplina se apoya, aunque en menor medida,
en los conocimientos específicos provenientes de las Ciencias del Deporte, que perfilan el ámbito de aplicación y los conocimientos complementarios adecuados para el desarrollo del área.
Podríamos entender que este campo de aplicación de la Psicología tiene un largo historial de antecedentes si consideramos como tales el interés de la ciencia y la filosofía por lo corporal y deportivo; sin
embargo, y de manera más restrictiva, ajustándonos a un concepto de disciplina científica formalizada,
podríamos establecer sus raíces en los mismos comienzos de la psicología experimental de Wundt y sus trabajos de laboratorio, centrados en el estudio de los tiempos de reacción y las respuestas motrices.
Por otra parte, nos tenemos que referir a los comienzos de siglo XX para encontrar las primeras reseñas documentadas que explícitamente se refieren a la psicología aplicada a la actividad física y el deporte.
Estas aportaciones se produjeron, al igual que en otras áreas de conocimiento, en determinados países y al hilo de los acontecimientos históricos de mayor calado social; en concreto, las primeras referencias encontradas provienen principalmente de tres lugares: la antigua URSS, Alemania y Estados Unidos. Aunque nuestro conocimiento de las aportaciones de los países de la Europa del Este son limitados, podemos mencionar los trabajos realizados en la década de los años veinte por A. Rudik o P. Puni,
quienes partiendo de una metodología experimental de laboratorio, se centraban en la realización de
evaluaciones psicológicas a los deportistas, en ciertas variables (tiempo de reacción -especialmente-,
inteligencia, personalidad, etc.). Esta orientación se iría modificando con el tiempo, centrándose más en
deportes específicos y su vertiente aplicada, con una creciente atención a la preparación psicológica del deportista para la competición.
En otro continente, encontramos las aportaciones de psicólogos norteamericanos, como las del pionero C. Griffith, quien fundó el primer laboratorio de psicología del deporte en EE.UU. Griffith dedicó buena parte de su trabajo a la investigación experimental en laboratorio (tiempos de reacción, habilidades
motrices, aprendizaje,...) complementándolo con aportaciones más aplicadas -incluso fue contratado
en 1925 por un equipo deportivo de la Universidad de Illinois, y en 1932 por un equipo profesional de
béisbol- mediante sus observaciones de campo y las entrevistas a entrenadores y deportistas, con el fin de estudiar los factores psicológicos implicados en el deporte.
Mientras tanto, en Europa occidental y antes del inicio de la II Guerra Mundial, encontramos en Alemania ciertos estudios sistemáticos en psicología del deporte, interesados en el papel de los factores psicológi4
cos, especialmente los motivacionales y emocionales, sobre el rendimiento y la competición deportiva.
