(“Efficient Building Services Systems“ module) Brief: Analyze the implications of using various passive design parameters (orientation of the building on site, the construction materials and shading elements) on the overall thermal performance of a building, considering two given geographic locations, London and Singapore. Software: Passive Design Assistant (PDA), Microsoft Excel + Word, Adobe InDesign. Description: The building is a 180 m² Sustainable Building Centre used to host various sustainability-related events, launches and conferences. • Dimensions: 18 x 10 m, Height = 3.5 m; • Openings: Two external 18 meter-long walls; no thermal transfers with the adjacent spaces. Eight 2x3 meters wide openings (2 are doors) placed on an external wall, • Occupancy Level = 1,5 m²/person (120 people); • Small Power Density = 10W/ m²;Lighting Power Density = 12 W/ m²;Mechanical heating and cooling; • Ventilation rate = the infiltration rate =0,5 ac/h; • Internal Temperature Targets: London : Winter 21°C | Summer 23 °C ; Singapore : All seasons 24°C (expectation factor). Base Case Model: External wall faces East for both locations. U-values: External walls = 0.54 W/m2K; Ceiling = 0.48 W/m2K; Flooring = 0.55 W/m2K . London : Max Heating = 5 kWh (January); Max Cooling: 28 kWh (July); Singapore : No Heating loads; Max Cooling = 22 kWh. • Lower U-value of constructs. External wall faces East for both locations. U-values: External walls = 0.14 W/m2K; Ceiling = 0.17 W/m2K; Flooring = 0.20 W/m2K . London : Max Heating = 2.5 kWh; Max Cooling: 24 kWh Singapore : Max Cooling = 29 kWh. • Building Orientation. U-values: same as point 2 London: Max Heating (North / South / West) = 2.5 / 0 / 2 kWh Max Cooling (North / South / West) = 17 / 22.5 / 28 kWh Singapore: Max Cooling (North / South / West) = 19 / 17 / 31 kWh • Shading. Orientation: best option of point 3; U-values: same as point 2 London : Max Heating = 5 kWh; Max Cooling: 16.5 kWh Singapore : Max Cooling = 17 kWh – NO EFFECT • Triple glazing. Orientation: best option of point 3; U-values: same as point 2; no shading London : Max Heating = 3 kWh; Max Cooling: 14.5 kWh Singapore : Max Cooling = 15,5 kWh
