LUIZ ONG ARCHITECURE PORTFOLIO 2016

PROJECT TYPE : Institutional STUDIO 4 : Mrs. Kim DATE : Sept - Dec 2013 LOCATION : Gombak, Kuala Lumpur AREA : 850 m2

The site is located nearby the Museum of Indigenous People in Gombak, Kuala Lumpur. The exisiting structures such as the family well being counselling room, office and meeting rooms are relocated and integrated into the new Educational Community Center of Gombak. Aimed at the younger generation of the Orang Asli, the Educational Community Center will prepare them for what lies ahead in the urban city. As they are eager to explore the fast paced city life, they will be able to adapt quickly as they are equipped with knowledge about technology. Unlike the urban city life, the orang Asli live together as a closely bonded community. Despite having individual houses, they can still sleep safely at night with a sense of security without having to close their doors and windows. With this idea, I implemented it into the educational community center. This will create a sense of transparency inside the building where they can always have visual interaction with one another.

CONTEMPORARY MARKET HALL FOR ALL

I

LUIZ ONG ARCHITECURE PORTFOLIO 2016

PROJECT TYPE : Commercial STUDIO 5 : Mrs. Shyn DATE : April - July 2014 LOCATION : Jalan Tun H.S. Lee, Kuala Lumpur AREA : 1200 m2

D Smack in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, the site for this project is along Jalan Tun H.S. Lee, where the burnt buildings are at, facing opposite of Maybank Building. The proposed building is a contemporary market place which includes a flea market on the ground floor, food stalls on the second fall and a bar on the third floor. The main issue for this site would be the safety and security of the community within the area. During the day, the street can be busy and hectic with tourists, foreign workers and local community. However, during the night, it can be dead as most of the buildings and shops closes up. Jalan Tun H.S. Lee can be a dangerous place to be whether being day or night. With this being said, the contemporary market hall would play a role as a life source to the street providing vitality and liveliness during day and night. The flea market helps to promote interaction between the community of Jalan Tun H.S. Lee, enchancing the relationship. It also acts as a public realm for people to talk, eat or simply to sit down and look around. The food stalls located on the first floor would help the community by providing various types of food that Kuala Lumpur has to offer. The bar located on the third floor would help provide security through visual transparency between the users inside the buiding and the public outside.

ELDERLY WELLNESS CENTER AT JALAN TEMPLER

I

LUIZ ONG ARCHITECURE PORTFOLIO 2016

PROJECT TYPE : Institutional / Healthcare STUDIO 6 : Mr. Eric Chang DATE : Sept - Dec 2014 LOCATION : Jalan Templer, Petaling Jaya AREA : 2000 m2

D The site is located near the roundabout, where Jalan Templer & Jalan Selangor intersects in the satellite town known as Petaling Jaya. The site is at a residential area where 3 bungalow lots previously existed but have been demolished. It is very visible and open in terms of visual linkage, as it is also located on one of the busiest streets in Petaling Jaya. According to the National Statistic Department, Malaysia will be a nation with an aging society by 2021. Therefore this issue undertaken that deals with the aging senior citizens is of importance to me because it is a major issue in years to come especially for Asian countries where filial piety is of great importance in our culture. My intention is to design a wellness center that would give back their independence & self esteem through physical activities that would promote their health, while creating a park like feel where one is continuously embraced with nature and a sense of communal gathering.

GROUND FLOOR PLAN The ground floor is designed to be a very open and public space. Aside the loading bay and other ulitity spaces, the two main focal points are the cafe and the bicycle hub. The cafe is designed to take advantage of the sceneries under the trees and the bicycle hub is where visitors or nearby residents can rent a bicycle to cycle around the site.

FIRST FLOOR PLAN The first floor is also very public but catered more towards the elderly that are residening in their respective homes. There are outdoor tea art class, flower arrangement class, cooking and baking classes which has been specifically dedicated to the elderly. Nearby residents either young of old are able to join in with the classes provided as well to help promote livelihood within the senior citizens.

2016 ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO LUIZ ONG

SECOND FLOOR PLAN The second floor consists of healthcare services and a multipurpose hall. The healthcare block is where the in house doctor and nurses will check the health of the elderly from time to time. The multipurpose hall allows the senior citizens to either watch performances or perform for events in which the community of the neighbourhood are able to join together with the elderly.

ROOF PLAN The roof garden is where tai chi and the outdoor lounge are located at. While doing this exercise, the elderly can enjoy a view of the roofscape scenery of the neighbouring homes and the trees nearby. The homes where the elderly stay are orientated with outward views and also inward views, forming a focal point in the center. These views also give visibility to each other homes to create a sense of belonging. Spaces in between are where informal gathering occur. The roof top of the homes are where trees are planted, where they can experience a horticultural therapy.

VIEW OF BICYCLE TRACK

25

The bicycle track is one of the main feature of the building which benefits the cyclist help, whether one is residing in the house, or a visitor. One can also just choose to take a stroll along the track, very much like walking in the park while enjoying the natural landscape of the site. A strong sense of visual linkage can be seen as well. When walking on the ground, one can see people practicing tai chi on the roof and vice versa, thus creating a strong sense of community. People in the cafe are able to enjoy the sceneric landscape of the site while being indoors, making the space very open as well.

VIEW OF TREE GARDEN Rather than having ordinary homes for the elderly, trees from the site are relocated to the rooftop. This would also provide a horticultural therapy for the elderly units that are residing here. Rather than chopping down the trees, they are simply moved to the rooftop to maintain the overall sceneric feeling of the site.

SH18 GUARD HOUSE SECURITY PAVILION FOR SRI HARTAMAS NEIGHBOURHOOD

I

LUIZ ONG ARCHITECURE PORTFOLIO 2016

PROJECT TYPE : Non-Building DATE : June 2015 LOCATION : Jalan Sri Hartamas 18, Kuala Lumpur

D The site is located at Jalan Sri Hartamas 18 in Kuala Lumpur. The neighbourhood was in need of a new security guardhouse as the existing one is in a horrible state as shown in the images below. With a tight budget, a design had to be proposed to the committee of the Sri Hartamas Residents Association (SHRA). Some of the requirements by SHRA was that it had to be a temporary structure that could be dismantled when required while looking aesthetically pleasing. We’ve used steel as the main frame of the structure and acrylic panels so that the guards are able to look at incoming cars.

Design Option 1

Though there are trees around to provide shade during noon, it can still be quite hot. Hence the idea of a safari roof was implemented in the design. The double roof allows hot air to flow out while another roof is above to prevent rain from penetrating into the guardhouse. Since the guardhouse had to be designed as a temporary structure, concrete blocks were used as the base only.

AERIA HOUSE DOUBLE STOREY TERRACE HOUSE FOR A SMALL FAMILY

I

LUIZ ONG ARCHITECURE PORTFOLIO 2016

PROJECT TYPE : Residential DATE : June 2015 - June 2016 LOCATION : No. 5, Lorong Abang Haji Openg 3, Taman Tun Dr. Ismail AREA : 165 m2

D The site is located in an affluent residential neighbourhood called Taman Tun Dr. Ismail, Kuala Lumpur. It is situated between the border of two major cities which is Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. Development of the area began during the 1970’s and over time housing conditions have deteriorated but land values have of course gone up as it is a prime location.

Design Option 1

The clients, a married couple are both professional emcees and have exuberant personalities. Both of them wanted an open living plan with a very raw and industrial feel. Some of the main challenges faced during this project was the design and strucutral integrity of the roof. Bricks, steel and concrete are the main language of the house which they wanted. This is my second project given to me during my practice at DEKODA. Although it is a medium sized residential project, I’ve gained plenty of knowledge ranging from buiding by-law, tender, dealing with contractors and suppliers to construction detailing and more.

URBAN CREST NYC SKY CONDO / FARM TOWER

I

LUIZ ONG ARCHITECURE PORTFOLIO 2016

PROJECT TYPE : Competition DATE : April 2015 LOCATION : The High Line, New York City AREA : 1432 m2

D The site is on a parking lot near the elevated square formed by the infamous High Line of New York City. For decades, the High Line had been seen as an ugly obstacle to neighborhood redevelopment. Comprehensive rezoning of the area and provisions to allow the transfer of development rights turned the structure into an asset. During the construction of the High Line the whole district of Chelsea has undergone a major transformation. Many buildings have been rehabilitated and many are under construction. Everyone agress that water is an essential source of life. Without water, there would be no living things on this planet and the amount of water that can actually be used is getting more and more scarce. By recycling stormwater and human waste water, not only do we save Mother Earth but also produce more crops and plants that would be able to feed the blooming population. Ideally, overflown human waste water and stormwater, along with rainwater from roads and streets is flown into an underground tank rather than flown into the river due the combined sewer outflow that cannot accept extra intake. Harmful chemicals and unusable solid waste that are health hazardous will be filtered to ensure that the water is usable for agricultural farming within the building itself.
