Compressed fibre cement is very strong due to the fact that it is compressed really tight. This material is often used for elements that need to have load bearing qualities like flooring or areas for waterproofing like bathroom areas.! Plasterboard is a cheap internal lining that is an extremely common material used on things like interior walls.!
! Blueboard is a fibre cement used for cladding.! ! -

Redboard is plasterboard which has a fire rating of around 3 hours meaning it can be used in buildings that require higher fire safety standards.! Greenboard is a water resistant plasterboard that is commonly used in areas where water resistance is needed and for protection against mould.! It is not possible to weld cold rolled steel together. Due to the fact that the material was formed under pressure and bent and conformed into shape, if heat is applied for welding the steel tends to warp. That is why this material is often bolted together using a bracket. These brackets have oval holes rather than circle in order to allow for adjustment.!

CLASSROOM ACTIVITY ! This week the classroom activity was to construct an allocated section of the Oval Pavilion redevelopment. The aim of this activity was to demonstrate our ability to interpret various technical drawings and legends provided on plans. It also allowed us to understand scale and translate this into a three dimensional model of the section we set aside for our group.!
!
In the beginning, the main challenges were to interpret the technical drawings provided, as it was complicated to understand the concepts being conveyed through the sketches. After spending an hour wrapping our heads around the structure and measuring the load bearing members through a multiple of scale drawings and mathematical calculations, we are able to construct the basic frame of the west skylight out of balsa wood.!
!
On the actual building these components depicted are made out of steel beams, which is aesthetically pleasing and correlates with the modern theme of the building. This, however, provides little load bearing capacity, probably due to the fact that the purpose of a skylight is to allow natural light to flood the building and provide aesthetic qualities rather than bearing loads.!

! A load path diagram is pictured to the right. This shows the path of the load acting upon the structure during equilibrium.!
!
Each group used balsa wood for modelling, a! material that is extremely common for model! !
!
Looking comparatively, each group used similar ! materials due to its easy shaping, stylish ! finish and the fact that most art shops sell balsa! wood for model making.! ! Each groups piece was to look similar to an opposite group at the other end of the pavilion. ! This picture depicts the groups work opposite ! to ours constructing the east sunlight. Their ! structure seemed similar to ours with a web of steel beams.!
!
This activity was extremely effective in helping understand the use of technical drawings.!

E-LEARNING & READINGS ! - Columns are vertical members designed to withstand compressive loads. They are considered short if the length to the smallest cross section is of a ratio less than 12:1 and long if the ratio is greater than 12:1. ! - Short columns tend to fail by crushing, whereas long columns tend to fail by buckling.! - Walls have many purposes such as providing enclosure, moderating climate, insulating, providing decorative features and being major load bearing structures.! - Structural frames can be made out of ‘the big three’ materials which are timber, concrete and steel. However load bearing walls are commonly made out of concrete due to its higher structural integrity. The Melbourne School of Design is a building which uses pre cast concrete panels to be load bearing walls.! - The older wood gets, the darker the colour becomes, which is evident when you examine the growth rings inside a piece of timber.! - Timber is a very durable material and can be highly sustainable if used correctly (recycling and renewable forestry).!

THIS WEEKS GLOSSARY TERMS! Strut- a rod or bar forming part of a framework and designed to resist compression.! Nogging- a horizontal piece of wood fixed to a framework to strengthen it.! Lintel- a horizontal support of timber, stone, concrete, or steel across the top of a door or window.! Axial Load- a force acting on or administered along an objects axis ! Buckling- when a member fails and bends under compression! Seasoned Timber- timber that is dried to have a stable moisture content (>15%).
