LOGBOOK ENTRY Week 8! Luke Adamson!

! ! -

Inertia is the resistance of any physical object to any change in its state of motion, including changes to its speed and direction. It is the tendency of objects to keep moving in a straight line at constant velocity.!

-

Another definition, in relation to construction, is that inertia is a measurement of the efficiency of the shape of an object in terms of the structure.!

! -

You can often tell if a wall is not load bearing if there is no lintel in the wall.!

! -

Stagnant air is a good insulator. This is what is trapped between the layers of glass in double glazed windows!

! ! -Low

E (emissive) glass is glass that emits less thermal energy (heat). To do this the windows are coated with thin film coatings which keep radiant heat on the side of the glass where it originates. As a result, heat doesn't escape from inside in winter and the summer sun is reflected away keeping the area cool.!

! -

! !

The flanges on a beam must be wide enough in order to stop rotational movement. Having the correct dimensions on a beam is extremely important to the structural integrity.!

CLASSROOM ACTIVITY ! ! This weeks classroom activity was to draw an allocated section of the Oval Pavilion to scale on an A1 page. This was done in order to grasp an understanding of how the construction and structural systems of the area worked and what purpose the materials selected play.! ! ! Insulation Flashing ! ! Parapet

Roof

Soldier Course Brickwork

Cold Rolled Steel- Zed shaped

! ! ! !

Gutter Tie

Mortar

Stud Frame

What we have depicted is a parapet and gutter connected to the roof of the service area.! 2

These images show the service area which contains the section drawn above. The actual drawing isn't shown because roof access couldn't be achieved.!

!

Some greater detail on the drawing:! - the gutter is made out of 0.6 mm zincaulme folded into shape.! - the tie holds the brick veneer wall to the timber stud framing.! - the flashing is in place in order to keep the water from entering any cracks and gaps.! - the brick skin is vertical for the first row and then horizontal the rest of the way down the structure.!

! !

This sections has obviously been thought out in regards to sealing and not allowing the infiltration of water and heat. Areas where water may enter have been given extra protection. This is the flashing where the gutter and the roof meet, as well as the top of the parapet. Also, there are areas that overhang the roof and parapet which allows water to drip down into the gutter rather than down along the wall which could allow moisture to seep into the structure.!

!

These materials will last over a long time as it is a new construction with a fairly large budget. In saying that, it doesn't seem that it uses the highest quality material, just enough to complete the job efficiently.!

!

Difficulties with this task arose from the drawing stage, translating the scale from 1:5 on a scaled down page, up to a real life 1:1 scale.!

E-LEARNING & READINGS ! Doors and Windows !

! ! Aluminium is common for doors in commercial and office buildings.!

!

Curtain Walls are windows but also walls that are hung off the structure, they usually carry their own load.!

!

GLASS! Glass is made up of formers (compound that is melted and cooled e.g sand), fluxes (materials that help formers melt) and stabilisers (things the keep glass from dissolving or crumbling).!

! Glass can come in all different forms: blown, sheet glass, plat, float, lamination.! ! This material is dense, hard when cooled but also fragile, has low ductility, is very durable and is expensive to produce and transport.!

!

Clear float glass is the simplest and cheapest type of glass, which breaks into sharp dangerous shards. Laminated glass, on the other hand, has a tough plastic inner layer which holds the glass when it shatters.!

! When glass is tempered is becomes stronger and breaks into smaller pellets.! ! THIS WEEKS KEY TERMS GLOSSARY! Sandwich Panel- structural panel material fabricated by bonding several laminations.! Bending- to shape or force into a curve or angle.! Skirting- a wooden board running along the base of an interior wall.! Composite Beam- A structural member composed of two or more dissimilar materials joined together to act as a unit.! Cornice- an ornamental moulding round the wall of a room just below the ceiling. !
