LOGBOOK ENTRY Week 9! Luke Adamson! ! -

If the cross-sectional area of a column is decreased then the load bearing capacity decreases or the stress increases.!

! Stress = F/A (force over area)! ! ! ! -

-

Detailing is the way that materials are put together!

! -Rusting

is the transfer of electrons between one metal and another. This happens when oxygen and water combine with iron.!

! ! ! ! !

! ! -

! ! ! !

There are many ways to prevent rust like combinations of chemicals or metal coatings.!

CLASSROOM ACTIVITY ! This weeks activity was a second walk around campus looking at the buildings and their various components. However this time it was less about the structural elements and focused more on things like the proficiency of the materials and detailing strategies used to keep the buildings in the best possible condition. !

!

First stop was the Sidney Meyer Asia centre.! The first interesting point was the fact the the ! windows were all frameless and were not part! of the structure. This meant that they needed to be sealed off with a silicone type material in! order to prevent water penetration. This whole! side could have been large panes of glass ! rather than smaller panes however that would ! have been extremely expensive. There was ! evidence of fluorescence seeping through the ! concrete holding up the stairs. Above the ! louvres are only for looks, no practicality.!

!

The bottom left image is a decorative metal ! that has a rust for a protective coating.!

2

! The top left image shows signs of cracking in the ! brickwork. This is due to the movement of the ground! in combination with the tree root system. At the top! is evidence of proper roof parapet to stop water leaking! down the facade.!

!

The top middle image shows what happens when the! building is properly looked after. The window frames ! have started rusting and there is mould growing on the! bricks from water seeping through the gutter system.!

!

Middle right is an image of a downpipe on one of the ! older buildings on campus. You can tell the age of the ! building because the downpipes are cast and iron and ! there is corrosion over the years which has led to this ! gaping hole in the pipe.!

!

The bottom image is more evidence of cracking through the brick wall. This is for different reason, probably due to the ground subsiding. Around the corner here is evidence of concrete cancer, where rust has seeped into the concrete the concrete has began falling apart.!

E-LEARNING & READINGS ! Construction Detailing is how the materials are put together. There must be many things taken into consideration like health and safety ratings and the conditions the materials will be exposed to.!

!

Composite materials are materials that are together but can still be noticed as separate. This is different to monolithic materials which are singular or combined so that the materials are indistinguishable.!

!

FRC is fibrous reinforced cement and commonly comes in sheets or boards, or shaped into pipes and tiles. It is used for waterproofing and wet areas.!

!

Fibreglass is a combination of glass fibres and epoxy resins. This is commonly flat or profiled sheets, as well as shaped products. This is usually used in areas that need to be weatherproof, and it is also lightweight and strong.!

!

Aluminium sheet composites are a combination of aluminium and plastics. They are commonly used for cladding.!

! !

THIS WEEKS KEY TERMS GLOSSARY! Window Sash- A sash window or hung sash window is made of one or more movable panels or "sashes" that form a frame to hold panes of glass.! Deflection- the action or process of deflecting or being deflected.! Moment of Inertia- a quantity expressing a body's tendency to resist angular acceleration, which is the sum of the products of the mass of each particle in the body with the square of its distance from the axis of rotation.! Door Furniture- the handles, lock, and other fixtures on a door.! Stress- pressure or tension exerted on a material object.! Shear Force- Force acting on a substance in a direction perpendicular to the extension of the substance, as for example the pressure of air along the front of an airplane wing.
