RESPONSIBILITIES:

Design of boathouse and mixed commercial office space building and its integration to the marina steps and waterfront park. Collaborate with PLACE landscape & urban design to merge architecture with site. Develop presentations to city council, community meetings, and assets for developer RFQ.

ABOUT:

The Des Moines Waterfront is a public / private development that seeks to reconnect the city of Des Moines with the Puget Sound, transforming a working marina into a community destination. The boathouse building expands the dry moorage on site while wrapping it in commercial / retail space, integrating into the landscape with a series of fully accessible terraces and pathways.

MY FAVORITE PART:

As this was the first public project I’ve worked on in a significant capacity, I enjoyed the process of meeting with the city of Des Moines, listening to their feedback and gauging their excitement on the possibilities of a large scale waterfront transformation. I delved into the research of boat storage on site to make an effective and beautiful solution and strived to seemlessly merge the design with the public stairs in coordination with PLACE.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Project design, documentation, and development from SD to end of CD phase. Iterated on exterior fenestration pattern, material concepts, and entry sequences. Create neighborhood meeting and design review presentations and packages. Coordinate with MEP, structural. and landscape architect.

ABOUT:

20th + Quimby is a 10 unit townhouse project in NW Portland. Each unit interlocks with one another to provide deep entry courtyard from the front and opportunities for glazing on all four sides. West facing units have an added ground floor office that faces Quimby. Each unit is four stories tall with a small roof deck atop the stairs.

MY FAVORITE PART:

I joined this project in early SD when the diagram was established, but there was a disconnect with its exterior treatment. I worked to create a facade language of interlocking puzzle pieces to reference the layout of the units. I also researched many exterior materials for the project trying to use budget-conscious materials in new and interesting ways.

Design of building from pre-design, feasibility studies, and concept design through permit. 3D modelling, rendering, and detailing of project. Create construction drawings. Lead OAC meetings and present design concepts to client. Coordinate with consultants and city.

ABOUT:

2nd + Ash merges warehouse vernacular and the industrial eastside’s spirit of artisanship with new structural technologies to create office space with a connection to its context. Our client was excited about the prospect of a beautiful mass timber structure, making our primary design goal to have a simple and welldetailed façade that is honest and expressive of its structure beyond.

MY FAVORITE PART:

As the first project I had significant creative control on, I was excited to delve deep into the details of the façade and structure. Working with structural engineers KPFF, we thought deeply about how to make this space beautiful for any TI for years to come, including coordinating pre-drilled holes into the beams and purlins to accommodate future lighting and data systems.

Work with interior design principal to come up with primary design concept, 3D modelling, rendering and detailing of space, and coordinate systems of interior space within a core and shell by others. Present design concepts to client. Coordinate with MEP consultants.

ABOUT:

Amaterra Winery is a large facility with many functions: wine harvesting and production, tasting, a full service restaurant, a point of sale for Touchmark properties, and a multipurpose reception space. We were brought on board during construction to design the top floor. Our goal was to coordinate the diverse program and create a space that complimented the complex ceiling planes and surrounding vista.

MY FAVORITE PART:

The beautiful ceilings and our design solution for the reception space. Previously incorporated in drop soffits in the ceiling, we worked to add HVAC into the sequence of reception bar and soffits surrounding the space and hide ducts behind shelves. This allowed the ceiling to read as one continuous plane that permeates all parts of the program, while our design rarely meets the ceiling.

ABOUT: 550 MLK is a multifamily residential building with ground floor microretail and residential amenity space. The client was interested in an expressive design, functional and efficient units full of accents and character, and an open ground floor concept that bleeds the line between retail and residential amenity space.

MY FAVORITE PART:

Multifamily residential buildings represent my largest area of expertise within design, so I was excited to explore unconventional design ideas with 550 MLK. Our team quickly latched onto an inside-out concept to the building’s façade, where window sizes, locations, and head and sill heights are determined by what is happening in the units, giving a hint at life beyond the exterior wall.

Led visioning/storytelling component for design RFP. Architectural and urban concept design for proposal. Create renderings, 3d modelling, graphics, site analysis, photography and verbiage.

ABOUT:

This work was made for a three week design competition. I worked with the design team on the concept and focused on the structure and visual storytelling of the proposal. The design opens up the dense core of the American Can warehouse and creates meaningful connec tions to the outdoors. The project is a major renovation of a historic factory building with the addition of a new mass timber office.

MY FAVORITE PART:

This was a quick RFP that due to Covid-19 had to be submitted electronically prior to interview with the client. As a result, I devel oped a strategy to make our design concepts easily understood visually without our voice in the room. The end result is a proposal that fits within a larger masterplan, connecting this historic site to Forest Park beyond.

As articulated in the May 2020 Master Plan document, the location of the site as nexus between Portland’s urban core, industrial area, and an entry Forest Park provides compelling case statement to embrace Pacific Northwest sensibility of an outdoor lifestyle. The history the site with the Lewis Clark Exposition 1905 particular the Forestry Building with its massive old growth timbers serves as inspiration Portland’s past, its industrial heritage, and appreciation for connection to wood both source of commerce and recreation. Previously used for can packing production, the main building was converted into vehicular parking garage service the Montgomery Park office building. The collection of buildings on the American Can site create inherently interesting urban condition because the variety of pedestrian experiences offered. Of particular note when visiting the buildings their present condition the raw and authentic grit and patina: the concrete columns with strong geometric capitals, the currently opaque clerestory windows, the dramatic butterfly roof shape, the expansive window openings (though mostly missing glass) and the iconic water tower that can be seen from distance as one approaches the complex. The American Can Complex complex. The collection of buildings, additions and renovations over time make difficult fully appreciate the site’s architecture. By simplifying the building through selective demolition iconic moments are highlighted: the water tower, the sawtooth skylights, and the unique butterfly roof the northeast building. The selective removal emphasizes the district spine, concentrating the energy the American Can Complex to the center the block reinforcing the Montgomery Park masterplan. The block completed with the 4th quadrant new mass timber office building the northwest quadrant providing modern front door the Complex. Variety and hierarchy public space add dimension to successful office building. These improved connections the American Can Complex back to Lewis and Clark Way. DISTRICT SPINE REINFORCE DISTRICT SPINE American Can RFP Response Design The American Can Complex comprised of variety of existing architectural aesthetics, styles, and scale. The office addition continues that tradition with story mass timber building. Its placement allows for an grade rain garden separating the existing American Can Building’s East wing allowing for access to light and air for floors within both buildings. By removing the existing single story element the west section of American Can, the story underground garage drawn the Montgomery Park Master Plan could be enlarged size reducing the overall depth from six levels of excavation three. By simplifying the American Can Complex to its essence, it is opened up, improves site connections, orders the diagram and pedestrian sequence, and highlights hundred years of patina and the beautiful structure of the building. The design celebrates the integration of disparate buildings around the District Spine. The new addition completes the
quadrant of the American Can Building. By opening up the eastwest connection, all buildings on the block orient to the center, amplifying the energy along American Can Alley. RESPONSIBILITIES:

Design assist to project architect and lead designer for high rise, plaza, and below grade parking. Develop design from schematic de sign to permit. Prepare drawings, 3d modelling, renderings, and details. Create design collater al for City of Portland design review process.

ABOUT:

Hassalo on Eighth takes a 400’-0” by 400’-0” superblock site in The Lloyd District and rein troduces the urban grid, breaking the project down into four distinct buildings on their own blocks. This project reintroduces residential ar chitecture into this district, providing over 600 apartment units, 44,000sf of retail, parking for 900 bicycles, and 1,200 below grade parking stalls.

MY FAVORITE PART:

Hassalo pushed the envelope of sustainability with its innovative use of the NORM system: a wastewaster recycling plant located on site that reclaims blackwater to flush toilets, irri gate the site, and operate the cooling tower.

Working with PLACE landscape architects, we were able to put this system on display in the pedestrian street bisecting the site.

With this design approach, the parts began to form the whole. This process worked surprising well, but was because by this point in the design process, we trusted each other. We had discussed our project goals and collaborated for five weeks and we respected each other in different way. Seth Dunn, who worked with the furnishings team to create the concrete hearth explains, “People think differently, and we forget that. When we finally embraced that, working together became lot easier.” We had an overall vision for what the building would be, but we came to that vision through process of discovery.
