CJ Part 1 recap The Problem and the Solution

6

The Problem Hitting the wall Hitting the wall is a common phrase between marathon runners, with 40% of athletes who have ran marathons claiming to have had this problem whilst training or racing. Athletes, especially novice athletes struggle to overcome this problem due to lack of experience. They start the race too fast, leaving them with little energy towards the end, resulting in them lessening their performance or having to stop.

7

The Problem

Among these athletes 69% use a form or wearable fitness tracker and 72% consume extra energy during the activity.

Expert Insights

Energy can be linked with other aspects, i.e. hydration and electrolytes - Shane Nugent

I hit the wall more in training than racing. Could the end product be used for both? - Alistair Brownlee

As an experienced runner I can usually work out when I need extra energy. Many novices athletes can’t - Mark Croasdale

If branded correctly you could have something that is completely different to the current market - Alistair Brownlee

9

The Problem

I believe Biosensors are the future of wearable technology - Joe Wang

Although wrist wearables are common, I still believe they are easiest to read. - Garry Gerrard

The Problem

The New Brief The new revised brief was to design a functioning wearable for marathon runners to monitor their current energy levels in real-time. This will be done by using a tattoo based electrochemical biosensor that tests for lactate levels within the users sweat. There will also be a service connected to the wearable in the form of nutrition. This full package can be targeted at novice and professional athletes whilst both training and racing.

The Solution

13

The Solution NZONE is a sports technology and nutritional company that specialists in real-time athlete energy monitoring. The 4 aspects; Biosensor, Heart Rate, Watch & Nutrition These 4 aspects work collectively to make NZONE. The biosensor can monitor lactate levels through the users perspiration, which then sends a wireless signal to the watch to display that data. This is combined with your heart rate to give you your current energy level. The nutritional gels and bars are then available to give the user that extra energy when needed.

The Solution

The NZONE Fortitude fitness watch with wrist heart rate monitoring

16

The Solution

NZONE Fortitude The sport watch shows your energy levels through a colour scheme: Green (Easy Zone) - The user is taking it easy, and has plenty of energy to exert. They can afford run faster without having to worry about their energy levels. Yellow (Optimal Zone) - The user is running at race pace, this is the best speed they can run without having to worry about their energy levels and will have enough energy to finish the race. Extra energy would be consumed when they feel like they need it, usually around mile 20. Every athlete should aim to stay in this zone. Red (Overexerting Zone) - The user is running too fast, if they don’t slow down immediately it will have a negative effect in their performance in the later stages of the race. If this doesn’t happen the user will start to fatigue and eventually stop. Extra energy should be consumed when in this zone.

Research & Development

Brand & logo Development It was important to have a name and logo that stood out and explained what my project was all about at first glance. Left: Shows my failed attempts and the story from start to finish whilst trying to come up with my final outcome. My initial logo and name was ENERGIZE. I was happy with this but after chatting to peers and tutors we agreed it was too ‘cheesy’ and ‘obvious’. Hence, NZONE was born.

21

Brand Intent The brand must group the products and services by a single visual style. Therefore you can clearly see the ‘o’ in NZONE is the logo as its carried out throughout each individual element; biosensor, watch, nutrition.

Brand Ethos - The lines on the design represent a direction. i.e. you are always moving forward, onwards and upwards.

22

The Bold Font - Bold

Headings & Titles Bebas Neue - Regular

Main Body Text Champanges & limosuines - Regular

The logo links all of the elements together. The name and colour scheme shows the 3 different energy zones, with the ‘N’ at the beginning of the name standing for Nutrition and also can be related to energy.

23

24

Biosensor

Real-time lactate monitoring

Although I was unable to actually get hold of said biosensor, I know it works and had clarification off scientists and tutors.

As I know it works, I was able to put this to the side and work on the rest of the project.

I was disappointed that I couldn’t actually get a hold of the biosensor. There’s only so much you can read and learn about something without actually seeing how it works.

25

OLYMPIC CHAMPION Alistair Brownlee Questionnaire

I spoke to the current Olympic champion in Triathlon about my project and got his feedback on a couple of questions.

His answers basically solidify everything I already knew. So I actually didn’t gain any new perspectives but at least I was on track and thinking of the correct stages

Change in Target Market Triathlon to Marathon Running

Initially this product was going to aimed at Triathletes but after speaking to David James, we decided that I would be best to stay away from swimming. This was due to sodium levels effecting the biosensor when worn in the water. I couldn’t promise accurate results from this so therefore I just concentrated on marathon running. I also decided against Cycling just so everything didn’t get over complicated.

Now this was clear I was able to focus on designing the watch and how it will be used.

Looking back on this now I should have also aimed the product at cyclists. It would have broadened the target market and I believe it would still work with little or no changes.

30

31

Research & Development

A key feature of the initial design was the progress bar. It was intended to give the watch a visually interesting aesthetic whilst being technically valuable and very simple ro read

32

Research & Development After a talk with David Parkinson, I opted to have more than 1 screen face. We agreed that If the interface was just a progress bar then the user would more than likely have to wear 2 watches i.e. NZONE watch and stopwatch (Garmin). Therefore I combined the 2. At this stage I began to see a device that could look like a finished product. Also I was still a bit skepical about how many different faces would be needed.

Development work for watch interface, including energy zones 34

By developing the watch display I found out that I needed 3 different displays, to show the following: Time/Pace/Distance Lactate Threshold Heart Rate and also an energy zone area that will be constant at all times.

Here I was trying to run before I could walk. The design of the watch faces weren’t good enough so I kept on plodding, with the key elements.

I showed my intial watch faces to Alistair Brownlee, and his feedback outlined that the lactate threshold face was over complicated

35

Final design renders of screen displays

36

The 3 different screen displays are: Time/Pace/Distance, Lactate Threshold and Heart Rate. The final designs quite clearly show what is needed on each interface.

I was much happier with these designs, but it is a shame I that I didn’t attempt to contact a watch engineer to see if this could have been made real.

37

38

Research & Development

By looking at current fitness watches I was able see what they showed the user and how different watches varied

I made a 3D printed model to understand the right dimensions with the plan to get the model silicone casted. Unfortunatley I didnt actually make my own silicone band, mainly as the Uni saying they couldn’t do it here. I should have tried externally to understand and prove I know how the process works.

Heart rate Due to there being a lot of information collected around heart rate monitors, it was easy to learn about and for me to distinguish between how your heart rate links to how hard you are working i.e. Energy Zones

The idea for this aspect came after speaking to Shane Nugent, a sports nutritionist who has spent a lot of time on how heart rates link to hydration.

43

Lactate Threshold There are a few different theories for testing for your Lactate Threshold. I believe this was the easiest one to link to my theory.

Lactate (mmol/L)

This was then validated after speaking to David James, a Nanoscientist at the University of Sheffield.

Zonal Readings HR + LT = Zones

By combining HR and LT, I was able to work out the energy zones of the athlete.

These percentages and results are from an official coaching website, TrainingPeaks. They allowed me to link the percentages to a certain zone.

I learnt more about this after going on runs myself and recording my heart rate at different intervals. This helped me understand and get in the mind of an athlete wearing the watch.

Zone 1 Less than 85% of LTHR Zone 2 85% to 89% of LTHR Zone 3 90% to 94% of LTHR Zone 4 95% to 99% of LTHR Zone 5a 100% to 102% of LTHR Zone 5b 103% to 106% of LTHR Zone 5c More than 106% of LTHR 47

This wasn’t successful and therefore went on to find an alternative way.

These sort of pouches were not right the task ahead.

53

Science in Sport Aluminum foil

After several phone calls, I managed to speak to Jamie Hyde, the director of OPM, the company that print SIS gel packs.

He agreed to send me some spare sheets of foil, and an example of how they get printed (layout). This was perfect and it meant that as soon I finished designing and branding the gel packs I was able to get them made.

This lead me to start making the shapes using a heat sealer. This was a vital part of my project. Speaking to Jamie and receiving the foil and layout examples helped me understand the manufacturing process.

54

55

56

Research & Development

Energy gel shape By using the heat sealer I was able to make different shaped gels packs.

There was a lot of trial and error at this point. I tried to come up with my own shapes and sizes by hand. I tried different styles but in the end stuck with the typical energy gel shape. Maybe I could have been a bit more adventurous here.

57

Heat Sealing The heat sealer proved difficult to use due to the intricate shaping, as well as the thickness of the foil and vinyl combined. I had many spillages and in the end had to resort to super glue on a couple. The gels also keep blowing up over night and therefore I had to keep a small hole to allow air to pass in and out. Due to this they wouldn’t be able to be consumed.

58

59

Add the oats bar

Seal the top and make a flap

Seal the other side and make a tear cut

Seal the end 60

Roll Packaging After making simple bar wrappers, my tutor told me to look into seal roll packaging. By doing this, the shape of the bars and packaging look professional and industry made. If I was to do the packaging again, I would try and get some thiner foil, or pay out for the design to be printed on to the foil. There are some defects (burns) from where the heat sealer burnt through the vinyl to seal the foil.

61

Packaging Again, I had to adapt my packaging style, and I’m extremely glad I did! My tutor really nailed down the importance of making it look professional and linking the nutritional side of the project to the watch

I wanted to have a few different flavours and so started experimenting. After I had worked out the correct base, 3 different flavours were added to the gels and 1 to the bars

I tried lots of different ingredients and followed many recipes. I also got many of my peers to try them. I didn’t receive 1 negative comment about the tastes! Although others and myself were happy with the outcome, I wish I had looked more into preservatives to try and make the food last longer. Mark Croasdale tasted the gels and bars when they were first made and he enjoyed them. ‘Very tasty and I can see them selling’

I enjoyed the branding side of my project even though my feedback was mainly negative until the final design was produced! The website was put together as to emphasis the campaign.

This could have been put together a lot better, but I ran out of time. Also, if I had managed to produce a video it out have worked hand in hand with the website and sold the design to a better extent.

I carried out research on advertisements and also started to put together my own video.

Unfortunately It didn’t come out too well, and I was strapped for time. My video editing skills are very basic, and this is something I really need to brush up on A video commercial would have really connected all the elements of my project together. I failed in this section.

The Manual Filling the gaps...

88

Within my packaging I had a small compartment. I decided this was going to be the space for the manual. Since there was a lot of information to add I made the manual in a scroll shape. The manual isn’t great. It was rushed, and a last minute effort. I didn’t have time to make this look as I wanted too and it came out rather unprofessional.

89

90

Foam was added to the ends of the inside dowel, this was so some black card could fit over the top and be held in place without the scroll unraveling. 91

The Tasting Fast but natural energy

92

I was extremely happy with the smoothie gels and the bars, they provided energy and tasted good. The only negative part is the fact that I didn’t have any preservatives within the food. Therefore I’m not sure what the expiry dates would be. The oats bars went hard really quickly!

Peers tried the bars and gels and all agreed they tasted great.

External Collaborators Overall thoughts and feedback

96

Alistair Brownlee

Professional Triathlete and current Olympic Triathlon champion

Hitting the wall is every Triathletes nightmare; I have been lucky enough not to have ’hit the wall’ whilst racing but have on numerous times in training. If I do ‘hit the wall’ l I know that I will have pushed my body to the limits thus improving my aerobic fitness and performance. I believe Luke’s design could work in theory but I wouldn’t know about the technology side. I think a service like this would be more useful to an amateur athlete, but I could use it myself to monitor my performance levels.

97

Mark Croasdale

Ex - Marathon Runner and GB & England Fell running manager

I have competed in many races and coached athletes mainly at professional level. ‘Hitting the wall’ is a common phrase used by runners and it can be a major problem within our sport. I know Luke has spoken to many athletes and has had positive feedback about his idea. The overall design looks fantastic to me, uncomplicated and easy to use.

98

Garry Gerrard

2007 ITU World Triathlon Champion and full time triathlon coach

Luke came to me asking the basics about nutrition and whether many of the athletes I coach regularly ‘hit the wall’. In my opinion the idea would be suited to novice athletes; this is based on their race experience and diet. However it would be of great benefit to professionals as they too hit the wall. The best place for the wearable would be on the wrist as it would be easier to see and more comfortable. The wearable would be suited to single individual sports i.e. cycling, marathon running or cross country skiing but not triathlon.

I have heard of Dr Joe Wang’s efforts in designing a non-evasive energy biosensor using perspiration before Luke approached me. I have not had access to the biosensor, but would be supportive of him in his efforts to prove the theory. It is a pity I could not have tested the biosensor and checked concentrations as Luke informed me that Dr Wang was reluctant to part with information on the biosensor.

I helped Luke at the start of his project to engage on an idea with sports nutrition. Hydration is linked to energy and I have carried out tests with hydration and urine samples. An easy way to test for energy levels is heart rate; Luke has gone a step further by combining lactate with heart rate to make a more accurate reading. Visually I commend him and feel this project could progress in the future.

Personal Reflection Of the overall project

102

I initially started my university career thinking I will end up in sports design, I suppose I wasn’t far off! I embarked on this concept through my passion for sport, especially running driven by hiding a problem within - Hitting the wall. The project has matured and developed well after a very shaky and slow start. I am pleased with the overall overcome, but do wish I could have gone further in actually manufacturing the working watch. Maybe this is something to look at in the future. The intention of this project was to help athletes monitor their energy and nutrition. I think I have achieved this, with sleek and attractive visuals.

What would I have changed? Everything. I have come to realise that the nature of design is that nothing is ever finished. There are countless details and refinements that, given the time, I would make in an instant. The iterative process that the course has installed in us has made us constantly reflect and question our work at every stage.

Going Forward Design for Industry has given me the confidence, drive and a passion for design. This project will remain at the top of my to-do list as I begin to iron out all of the creases and continue to develop it. I did have contact with the manufacture of the biosensor, Dr. Joe Wang, until he stopped replying to my pestering. I could try get back in contact with him and move the design stage forward. 103
