Phanom Sarakham, Thailand. On a motorbike, you can feel the rush of the air, the sun and the land. Vast and verdant stretches of rice paddies give way to rows of decaying apartment buildings, their pastel fronts dusty from a long and relentless rainy season. Drab storefronts peek out behind mazes of pop up food carts and cardboard signs. The glittering arches of Wat Ta Khiew arrive, in a breathless curve, behind the Seven Eleven.

Here, the city and the traffic shape each other. The infrastructure swells and recedes with the ebb and flow of rush hour, a smoggy flood of motorbikes weaving through the town, going to work or to the market. Here motorbikes are not just a means to get somewhere, but a vehicle to understand the dynamic heart of the town.

There are no traffic jams here. The occasional car defers to the dozens of motorbikes that rush down the road, some going important places, others not. Motorbikes are functional. Motorbikes are expressive. Here the traffic has a face. It looks old and young: a school aged child, a starched and stoic public official, a schoolteacher in a pink skirt suit. It smiles and waves, gawks and laughs. Smoggy streets flash with familiar

Motorbikes are not synonymous with rebelliousness, and most children ride one, parentapproved. “I got a motorbike when I was thirteen,” says Ham Erawat leaning on his motorbike in the parking lot of the neighborhood national park. “It’s to help out the parents.”

“Some kids join motorcycle gangs and ride down the street very fast, but I am not like that,” Ham continues. “When we have a motorbike, we can take ourselves to school, we can ride to the foodshop if we forget something. It’s really to help our parents.”

Arrai ga dai, whatever can be done, they say in Thailand. Small motorbikes are heaped with stacks of tottering boxes, dogs are edged onto the ends of seats, their eager faces stretching to meet the breeze, young children sit sandwiched between mum and pop while Grandma rides saddle on the back.

In Thailand, there is something called Nam Jai. It means “water heart” and expresses a kind of refreshing generosity. You will see friends and families sharing their saddle together, sometimes two at a time, sometimes four at a time. If you have friends here, you won’t have to walk home. 40
