Our vision is to provide Minneapolis youth with additional opportunities and exposure to the arts, outside of the school-day curriculum. We will accomplish this through the presentation, experimentation with and the exploration of different art mediums, musical instruments, and through interaction and engagement with the greater Minneapolis and University of Minnesota arts communities. We will provide an atmosphere of inclusion best suited for artistic exploration free of pressures to conform with traditional standards of art. We strive to stir the artistic passions of students, while working to redefine cultural standards of what qualifies as good art.

Leadership Staff Applications

We are extending the deadline for leadership staff applications. This includes Student Board, Coordinator, and Volunteer Staff positions. All applications will be due on FRDAY APRIL 1st. We encourage all of you to consider applying for these positions. You do not have to be a VStaff before you apply for Coordinator or Student Board. If this is your first year at the Y but want to be on Student Board– GO FOR IT!

If you have any questions regarding positions we have job descriptions posted in the stairwell between 1st and 2nd floor. Otherwise feel free to contact your coordinator or a student board member. We want to help you all with your journey through the Y.

Community Leadership Intern Program Y-CLIP is in full swing during its spring semester program! 16 interns are working at local community organizations on issues that range from homelessness and social services to business education and child care. The interns, through their internships and weekly seminar, are learning lessons in ethical leadership, professionalism, and community activism.

Y-CLIP will also be offered during the summer. Interns will be working 15-20 hours per week, with a week off for the 4th of July. If you are interested or know someone who would benefit from this great experience, contact the coordinators at yinterns@ymcampls.org...or find us in our CLIP cube!

Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail. ~Harold Mcindon

Have you Liked us Yet?? With the beginning of the new semester, we are looking to re-energize our social media efforts and connect with University students and UY alumni more effectively. Our first big push is consolidating our identities on Facebook and making one main page for the University Y. We are asking a few things of you to help us get going: First - Like us! Our facebook page is now called "University YMCA - UofM". Second—The Y's brand restrengthening is encouraging that we use our new mission line: "The Y: We're for youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility" in most contexts and messaging. The new Y logo is also important to keep messaging consistent. Please consider these in your facebook pages. Third - Your input is important! If you or your program has anything that you think would be a good update, link, or message for our page let me know. Luke Reynebeau is taking over the UY’s media. If you have any suggests or updates you would like him to consider please contact him at

Spring Clean Up Spring Clean up is quickly approaching and we need YOU to help us out. We are currently recruiting houses for April 9th and 16th. This is a big fundraiser for the U-Y and we need participants to sign up to help for a 4 hour time period to do spring clean up at one of these houses. Tasks may include: painting, raking, planting flowers, sandbagging, etc. We will be sending out a Google doc for you to sign up with your availability. Bring your friends. It is a great way to give back to the community.

Tutors This semester we see the tutors working on extra activities outside of tutoring that follow their goal of educating today’s youths. These activities include the Track and Field Event and the FLE (Family Literacy Event).

The Track and Field Event – headed by Alex Mazurek and Randall Auna – is an event at the end of the semester that emphasizes children being physically healthy and aware that college is in their future! This is done by a day full of scavenger hunts, tours, and physical activities. Planning is arduous, but definitely worth the end result. As of now they have begun raising funds and have locked in an appearance by Goldy the Gopher.

FLE – headed by Emily Hyunh – is a night of fun activities for kids from one of our community schools that focuses on the important of reading and different fun ways parents can encourage it at home. Emily has been hard at work finding the right school and activities to include. If participants from other programs want to be involved email Emily for FLE, huynh104@umn.edu.

If participants from other programs want to be involved email Alex for Track and Field, mazu0043@umn.edu

LCP YAY! So here are some sentences and bullet-point updates about the program The Leadership Certificate Program (LCP) is off to a wonderful start! With almost all the sessions being completed, participants are now using events and activities from their every day lives to link together important concepts discussed during their sessions. This approach allows the participants to see leadership living and playing out in all walks of life! Session categories included: *Group Dynamics! *Diversity! *Communication! *Problem Solving Two participants chose to observe the group dynamics of a Gopher Men's Hockey game. They connected how the power of a few fans can motivate the entire crowd to cheer, engage and be excited about the game. Their reflection included an innovative rap filmed with cutting edge technology and modern forms of brilliance. Leadership is about sharing your passion and getting others to join--even if it means making an ass of yourself in front of large groups of humans! So to wrap up this section on LCP, I encourage you all to find leadership in your life and reflect on it! *WATCH OUT! LCP might be partnering with the Y-CLIP Summer Internship program...so be sure to check it out!
