MASTERPLANNINGS & MIXED USE PROGRAMS

Dear Readers, As a young improving architect, contented with expanding design skill-sets and building up experience in various projects in both China and Indonesia, I make a significant player to your team. My name is Luke Theodorius E. D. Santoso, I am showcasing my CV and portfolio for consideration towards Senior Architectural Designer position in your office. I am a result oriented, and flexible person, I am willing to work with a high octane team of design professionals. I have had a great working experience during my career journey by working together with high calibre teams in AntiStatics Architecture (Beijing, China), China Academy of Building Research - 中国 建筑科学研究院 (Beijing, China), Jeffry & Associates consultant (Semarang, Indonesia). It was a precious experience working with a creative design team that created and worked on several built projects, such as The MaoHaus; a computational facade piece located across the infamous printing shop during Mao's era at Banqiao Hutong-Beijing, selected for PS1 MoMA Young Architect in 2016, won Winter Pavilion for Toronto City : "Pussy Hut Pavilion" Canada in February 2018, and so on. The qualification of my portfolio is ranging from cutting edge fabrication, interior, to mixed-use complex, art installation to commercial and office design. There is no way more quick or inspiring to learn than from people who love and are good at what they do. I believe this portfolio would provide you an insight to my architectural skill set, and I hope we can work together as a solid team, I am looking forward to hearing from you soon. Sincerely, Luke Theodorius E. D. Santoso luketheodorius@outlook.com

THE MAOHAUS BEIJING, CN

MaoHaus is an experimental façade piece exploring historical context, material potentials, novel fabrication and performative qualities within architecture. Taking the simple frame and edge condition of the existing structure, the façade enters the space of the hutong as a flowing fabric. This fluidity is expressed through the conventionally rigid material of concrete questioning inherent perceptions of materiality through formal expression. Beyond the undulating form, the perforations of the surface serve to filter light, during the day, rays of sunlight enter the vestibule, and at night the precisely tuned apertures reveal a triptych of Chairman Mao’s prototypical portrait. The expression of Chairman Mao within the façade is a nod to the historical context of the site. The work is located in a Hutong alley in central Beijing adjacent to The People’s Art House Print Shop, this workshop was once one of the primary producers of the Chairman’s now iconic image.

Pussy hut TORONTO, CA

Symbols can bring us together or push us apart. The pussy hat united the world on Women’s Day, with cities and towns around the world, women and men, coming out in solidarity. The Pussy Hut celebrates the symbol of the hat and expands upon it to create a warm shelter from the cold. The bright signature pink is highly visible, this cannot be ignored. The massive scale of visitors in to space. The internal structure, reminiscent of old hat forms, spills out from the entry space creating am open space for gathering and collection. Like the Pussy Hat, the design is simple yet powerful, a symbol like this gains its strength through participation and unity. As winter approaches it is a reminder to wear your hat, stand up for what’s right, bring others in to join us and stay warm.

On-site material preparation for: Stage backdrop, Column cover and Hanging Installation

Installation Process

The design for the interior elements of the Hi-Ten Mobile Theater is a hybridization of deployable geometries and natural material behaviors to create a scheme that elevates the space and performance while responding to the constraints inherent in the theater’s frequent deconstruction and reconstruction cycles. Elements of the design must also adapt to the various characters of the theater’s different performances, becoming dynamic elements that can change the mode of the space at will. To develop and execute these ideas into a cohesive design, we developed novel uses for readily available materials.

beijing Hybrid forest “THE WOVEN“ series BEIJING, CN

Luke Theodorius, Isabelle, Yan

For residents of Beijing, air quality is a part of daily life, clear blue skies are celebrated as rarities while many citizens spend most days hiding their faces behind masks. Through Hybrid Forest the city can utilize the natural pollution fighting abilities of carbon hungry plants to reduce air particle pollution. These systems are simple light weight retrofits capable of adapting to any existing urban infrastructure. Additionally, the systems are potted and do not require penetrating the blanketed hardscape that covers most urban spaces. The green addition also functions to beautify the city, by adding living organisms directly to existing infrastructure once cold harsh spaces becoming inviting. This research is seen as a simple first step to provoke and encourage the city to invest in natural means of air purification. Through systemic testing we propose a few initial means of injecting life. There are few limitations to this system, curtains may envelope entire buildings like blankets reducing heating and cooling costs, new canopies may shade vast open squares and hutong may gain productive non interventionary gardens.

diamosque “THE WOVEN“ series KILIS, TURKEY

Since the beginning of the Syrian war, Turkey has become the biggest recipient of refugees with a total of 2,700,000 refugees in March 2016. The government hosts the Syrian people at their own expenses and funds the construction of some of the best refugee in the world. While the Turkish government offers quality living conditions, the spiritual and community needs of the people are not adequately met. Basic shelter is not enough. Communities, even temporary ones, need collective spaces to gather, to pray, to escape. While typical livings quarters are plastic or metal enclosures, the deployable mosque creates a cool shaded space by maintaining openness. Openness of structure keeps the identity undefined, not imposing the architecture on the displaced populations, but by being a framework onto which they can project their identities. One dramatic advantage of the woven strip system is that it is easily transported due to the highly packable nature of the strips. Additionally, the fabrication information is embedded within the material itself, assembly diagrams are easily deciphered allowing residents to construct the mosque as a community bringing agency and ownership.

the "CALVIN" LATTICE Part and units TAKE PART MAKE ART - ST. BARBARA, CA, USA EFFIX - VARNA, BULGARIA

This proposal for the Italcementi Pavilion in Varna Seaside Park simultaneously addresses the design in terms of function, aesthetics, material efficiency and strength, fabrication and assembly. Beginning with the innovative material of UHPC, our design utilizes the nature of the material and its fabrication process. Inherently advantageous to casting is being able to reproduce a single geometry many times over with minimal differentiation between elements. Leveraging this, our design creates a structural lattice based on the concept of cellular digital solids, a system in which discrete elements aggregate to form a network with unmatched strength to weight ratios; as these structures grow in density they will themselves begin to behave as cellular solid materials such as high density foams and crystals. In this sense, our design is not simply a scheme for the Seaside Park of Varna, but also seeks to implement the fabrication process and material behavior of I-Design concrete as research towards larger architectural connotations.
