Nossa Graded. Our Graded. This is the title of this year’s yearbook- a short, simple, yet powerful phrase that exemplifies the collective ownership of the Graded Experience. Whereas some students around the world simply indicate that they “go to a school where they take advanced Chemistry” or they “study at a school which is known for its sports program” or they “attend a school with a great arts department”... Graded students tend to use the possessive ‘our’ to endearingly describe their experience at school. Rather than ‘go to, study at, attend’, the learning journey at Graded is described with much more emotional attachment and ownership. It is ours, constructively created by all and sustained by everyone involved - students, parents, teachers, staff, and other community members. One gets out of Graded what one puts into it.

Board of Directors Roberto Sallouti - President Marvin Boakye - Vice-President Renato Ochman - Secretary Luiz Claudio Galeazzi - Treasurer Monica Boudaye Della Nina Fabio Coelho Lee Fertig - Ex-Officio Ana Cabral Gardner Paige Geiger Dennis Hankins Rodolpho Protasio Johann Mathias von Bernuth

“It is not enough to simply listen to student voice. Educators have an ethical imperative to do something with students, and that is why meaningful student involvement is vital to school improvement.”

And there is no better way to capture this collective student voice than through language and images generated directly by students. This is what Nossa Graded sets out to do... it is a journey of the 2014-15 Graded Experience through student-generated words, notes, images, and graffiti. Nossa Graded reflects student voice at its best. It informs the rest of us what is most meaningful and valued by our students.

“And you, of the tender years, can’t know the fears that your elders grew by... and so please, help them with your youth, they seek the truth...” - Graham Nash Our students, our school, Nossa Graded ! Abraços, Lee Fertig

special thanks

The Graded Yearbook has been a publication that many students wait for anxiously year after year. The process starts with a selection of theme and design, continues with the creative and building process, and finishes with hours of revision to make sure our pages are ready for the community. When this year’s staff began to conceptualize, we realized that our purpose was to make a collection of memories that anyone could revisit and treasure. With this perspective, the staff designed an interactive, creative yearbook full of memories and personal jokes that everyone could connect to. By using student made doodles and graffiti, as well as stories told by faculty and students, we were able to put together a book that holds a lot of personality and one that you will hopefully have fun with. The 2014-2015 yearbook is brought to you by a hardworking staff that spent months debating the colors, fonts, and drawings that were incorporated into these pages and whom I was honored to work with. A lot of time was spent working on a publication that we hope you will all enjoy, connect to and keep forever. I certainly will.

This time, the yearbook had an even greater importance to me, as it is the last one that I will be contributing to as an editor, as a student, and as a reader. With that in mind, I strived to help create a book that the Graded community would remember and cherish for a long time. The idea of including memories and jokes this year was a meaningful step towards making the yearbooks more personal and relatable. As a Graded Lifer, having been at this school for 12 years, I know I will refer to this book in the future and be able to look back at all my time spent here. Finally, I want to thank all of the talented art students who provided amazing doodles for us to use and helped us make this book successful. We hope you enjoy reading through these pages as much as we have enjoyed making them for you! Thank you, Fernanda Fiszner
