Butterfly and Hummingbird Garden by Huron River

Butterfly and Hummingbird Garden is a pollinator garden located at Gallup Park, in Ann Arbor along Huron River. It is founded and sponsored by The Rotary Club of Ann Arbor North. The Garden is about 3,000 square feet and the plant species in the Garden are pollinator-attractive.

INTRODUCTION

Gallup Park Gallup Park is a 69-acre park and is Ann Arbor’s most popular recreation area. It is located along the Huron River and Geddes Pond with scenic walkways that traverse small islands with bucolic pedestrian bridges. The park contains two playgrounds, a canoe livery, picnic areas and grills scattered throughout the park, two picnic shelters, open field for play, and over three miles of asphalt trails that are popular for biking, rollerblading, walking and running. 1


The Rotary Club The Rotary Club of Ann Arbor North, supports, cleans, and maintains the Butterfly Garden that is located in Gallup Park. The Butterfly Garden aim to create an environment through the planting of specific plants and flower to attract butterflies. This beautiful garden is on the side of the Huron River. Its a small garden in the shape of a knot with flowers targeted to attract Butterflies and Hummingbirds. 2

Butterfly and Hummingbird Garden is located at Gallup Park. It is founded and sponsored by the Rotary Club of Ann Arbor-North, in cooperation with City of Ann Arbor Department of Parks and Recreation. It is currently maintained by the member of Rotary Club.

DESIGN INSPIRATION The garden design was inspired by the shape of a butterfly.

Summer is the best time of the garden. In April, snow melts and the garden wakes up from the long winter Many flowers bloom in May and last to August and they attract a lot of wildlife.

There are still some flowers in the garden in September and October. Many plants have pretty fall colors and forms.

PLANT SPECIES The plant species used in the garden are attractive to pollinators especially butterflies and humming birds. They are also low-maintainance and will last a long time from spring to fall.

Pollinators A pollinator is an animal that moves pollen from the anthers to the stigmas of flowers, thus effecting pollination. Animals that are known to be good pollinators of flowers include bees, butterflies, hummingbirds and insects. Plants benefit from pollinators because the movement of pollen allows them to reproduce by setting seeds. However, pollinators don’t know or care that the plant benefits. They pollinate to get nectar and/or pollen from flowers to meet their energy requirements and to produce offspring. In the economy of nature, the pollinators provide an important service to flowering plants, while the plants pay with food for the pollinators and their offspring.
