Welcome from our Patrons

As Patron, I am delighted to welcome you here this evening to this our 22nd annual Oil and Gas Industry Quiz, which is again a sell-out event. It is gratifying, in these difficult times for our industry, to see so many companies here willing to take up the challenge and support the further development of Spinal Injuries Scotland (SIS). It’s thanks to you that they can continue to deliver effective and relevant information, services, advice, support, motivation and education direct to those who need it most. Our fundraising efforts tonight go a long way to helping SIS continue with their main aim – to help people and their families and carers through what is a

deeply traumatic period in their lives. Our challenge this year is to try to raise more money than we have ever done in the past for SIS. With the funds we bring from this event alone totalling a third of the charity’s fundraising budget for the year, Let’s make sure we make a difference to the lives of others whilst enjoying a night to remember. So with your pens at the ready, here’s wishing every team the best of luck with the questions. Our compère in the room tonight, Charlie Richmond, will be trying to keep the question rounds on track while using his Geordie humour to encourage us to buy raffle tickets and bid on the auction items. We have some wonderful items on offer. I hope you have a fun and enjoyable evening and may the best team win!

On behalf of Chisholm Hunter, it’s an honour to continue our support of Spinal Injuries Scotland (SIS), this dedicated charity whose hard work is making a significant difference to service users and their families. Learning about the incredible journeys and the remarkable strength shown by those suffering from spinal injuries, we were inspired to become a part of the charity which provides information, services, advice, support, motivation and education for those affected. We are also proud to sponsor an SIS beneficiary, Para Dressage Equestrian, Emma Douglas. Emma had a horse riding accident in 2005, but has been

Sponsor’s Welcome

ConocoPhillips has been the main sponsor of the Oil & Gas Quiz for over 20 years. Throughout this time, we have been proud to work with Spinal Injuries Scotland in helping to funding their efforts to ensure the issues surrounding spinal cord injury (SCI) are widely recognised and understood. Living with an SCI can be difficult, not only for those with an injury, but also for close family members, relatives, friends and colleagues. This year, I would like to say a special thank you to all the companies who have taken a table and who have provided sponsorship and/or raffle prizes for this evening. The economic climate over

Our Sponsors the past year has been an especially challenging one for the oil and gas industry, and as companies restrict capital further, I know it is difficult to sustain charity support at the same levels that we have had in the past. The oil and gas industry on the UK continental shelf has to compete fiercely in the global market to attract priceconstrained capital, yet your presence here tonight shows that despite the demanding economic climate, our industry’s ongoing commitment to local projects and charity initiatives is still a strength to be applauded. Thank you for your support.

About SIS Spinal Injuries Scotland (SIS) is a national voluntary organisation that exists to support spinal cord injured (SCI) people, their relatives, friends and carers, wherever they live in Scotland. Put simply, our vision is “To act as an agent of positive change for all spinal cord injured people”. We aim to: • SUPPORT those coming to terms with SCI, • INFORM those living with SCI, and • INFLUENCE decision-makers and designers as they shape the world for those with SCI One of the first points of contact with SIS for those who sustain an SCI is our Peer Support Volunteers, who are at the heart ofwhat we do. Drawing upon their personal experience of the challenges of SCI, SIS Volunteers visit the Queen Elizabeth National Spinal Injuries Unit at the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow and other outreach clinics across Scotland, engaging and supporting, answering questions, quelling fears and dispelling myths. Our Website, Facebook presence, Advice line and Freephone service enable us to reach further, sharing our knowledge and advice on any matters which our members raise. These encompass the 8 realities of independent

8

living with SCI and extend to advice on issues such as holidays at home and abroad, sports, hobbies and motability aids. Foremost amongst these is our expert legal and welfare rights advisory service, delivered through our nominated legal advisors, Digby Brown Solicitors. Our adapted accommodation at Clober Farm, Milngavie, allows wheelchair users and their loved ones (for a nominal sum) to a take a well-earned break in the heart of Scotland. Safe in the knowledge that the accommodation they’ve chosen has been specifically designed with their needs in mind. We are committed to using our enthusiasm, energy and resources to encourage our members to concentrate on the future and support them to achieve their goals. The support provided through the Oil & Gas Quiz by its Sponsors and Guests plays a vital part in our efforts and we consider ourselves privileged to receive it. Thank you for your support. It makes a genuine difference. Enjoy your evening.

Charlie Richmond started his professional acting career in 1999 when he made his film debut in Purely Belter. Since then he has graduated from Sunderland University with a BA Hons in Drama. Whilst continually working as an actor, being represented by Nicola Hobbs at Talented Artists, Charlie also works for Just DBT, a drama based training company specialising in communication skills and behavioural safety training. Wanting to further explore this avenue, Charlie completed the BOSIET Offshore training in 2013 and now regularly visits platforms delivering drama based safety training at the work face.

Guest Speaker Aside from working as a drama facilitator, Charlie has consistently worked on stage and television and some may recognise him as Brian the WAG from the Pot Noodle adverts. His other recent credits include the role of PC Neil Sidwell in Inspector George Gently (BBC), SGT Bull in Joe Maddison’s War (ITV), Paul the Brazilian Beach Towel for Pot Noodle (World-cup Campaign) and Gary the ‘£1 000 man’ in the Moneysupermarket commercials. Last year Charlie returned to the stage to perform the role of Adrian Sanderson in a concert version of Sting’s musical The Last Ship. The sellout concert was at the Sage Gateshead in April. Since hosting the Oil & Gas quiz for the first time in 201 4, Charlie has had an eventful year of his own. Most notably he got married in August 201 4 to his beautiful wife Claire. “It is a great pleasure and an honour to be asked back for the third year in a row to host the event again, especially for such a worthwhile cause as Spinal Injuries Scotland. I hope you all enjoy the evening and good luck.”

Last year she took up indoor rowing with some other military veterans the plan to get back on the water rowing but this was to lead in a very different direction. Encouraged by rowing colleagues she applied to go to trials to become part of the UK Invictus Games Team going to Orlando in May to compete against 15 different countries. Accepted for the trials she went to Bath for three days and competed in indoor rowing and hand Joanna Martin had an accident while on cycling. At this time she is waiting to find a military assault course which resulted out if she has made the team. in a spinal injury. Following a lengthy recovery in the Spinal Unit in Glasgow she Joanna Martin managed with multiple adaptations to her house to return to independent living. Unable to go back to work as a hands on nurse she turned to charity work becoming a Trustee with Spinal Injury Scotland, an ambassador for RAF Benevolent fund and chairing a small disabled sailing group. A keen runner and rower before her accident Joanna was keen to return to sport as soon as possible so it was not long before she got her first hand bike and took to the streets doing all the local

Clober Farm Spinal Injuries Scotland was bequeathed this Grade C-listed property in Milngavie, near Glasgow, and converted it to fully accessible accommodation. Designed with the spinal cord injured and wheelchair user in mind, Clober Farm offers a fully accessible and relaxing setting which is seldom achievable elsewhere. The accommodation sleeps 5/6 and comprises adaptable kitchen, two double bedrooms (one with ensuite wetroom), a single bedroom, plus a modern accessible bathroom. It also has an accessible garden complete with patio area and raised beds. Clober Farm is an ideal location being seven miles from Glasgow city centre, situated close to the West Highland Way, Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, and has some great local facilities. We have welcomed a number of guests for varying periods, including long term, short breaks, weekends and overnight stays. Feedback has been very positive with all of our guests saying that they would definitely return. With his wife Jacqui, Tony Steeple (an employee of CAN Group when he sustained his spinal injury) has had several stays at Clober Farm:

18

“When Tony was admitted to the Queen Elizabeth Spinal Injury Unit in Glasgow, we were very kindly given the opportunity to rent Clober Farm through SIS. Being far away from home and with a newborn baby we were very grateful to have such a great facility for us to be together as a family. During Tony’s eight month stay at the spinal unit, he stayed at the house for every weekend pass. The house is well equipped for anyone with a spinal injury. After discharge from hospital back home to Orkney, we have since returned to stay at Clober Farm for hospital appointments, concerts and a weekend break. It’s the comfort of knowing everything you need is provided which can be an anxious time for anyone with a spinal injury. We would definitely recommend the house and we look forward to our return visit later this year.”
