Whether it’s the LA-centric graffiti book, “Graffiti LA” by Steve Grody, or the national scope covered in the recently released “The History of American Graffiti” by Roger Gastman and Caleb Neelon, Kizu’s influence on the visual language found in the City of Angels cannot be overlooked.

AUGUSTINE KOFIE
(Los Angeles)
Inspired by the basic building blocks of the geometric world, Augustine Kofie has formed a retro-futuristic aesthetic which transplants these shapes and angles into a soulful, organic, yet highly mathematical form of abstraction. Merging his traditional graffiti education, his inclination toward “certain colour forms and certain application techniques”, with his deep love of illustration and preliminary design, his fondness for “drafts, architectural renderings and pre-production concepts”, Kofie plays with form and line, with balance and depth, twisting and manipulating his murals, his illustrations, his compositions, into ever new and dramatic arrangements. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Kofie’s instinct to draw was cultivated through the creativity of his mother. Whilst she was studying fine arts at UCLA, Kofie was using the supplies that lay around his house to start experimenting on his own, he starting to excel in drawing by the time he had reached middle school. Whilst his art education never went further than high school, Kofie’s real training was garnered through his time spent painting graffiti, he coming to prominence in the Los Angeles graffiti scene by the mid 1990s. Giving him an extensive understanding of both “colour and layering, points of perspective and arrangement”, graffiti not only gave Kofie his technical foundation however, it also provided the underpinning for his love of construction and form: Through drafting and sketching wildstyle pieces, “stretching the letters out and rebuilding them, giving them varied points of perspective and basically building shapes out”, Kofie began to understand the architectural basis of writing, an understanding pushing him to focus on the linear rather than alphabetic aspects of his work. Having also felt that he had made an honest contribution to the LA graffiti scene, Kofie’s evolutionary drive meant he soon began to “distort and manipulate” his work, attempting to “re-contribute and redistribute something new” Developing his aesthetic into an almost pure abstraction then, dominated by the simple squares, triangles and circles that make up our structural universe, Kofie’s relentless desire to experiment and explore his visual surroundings meant he was forced to engage in a constant test of his own mindset and preconceived ideas, each work an attempt to find a geometrical solution to a graphical problem. Putting his entire soul into his work, into his craft, Kofie has thus formed an intensely layered, earthy, dynamic style of contemporary muralism, an illustrative practice which digs deep and looks forward, a practice, like the Roman God Janus, which surveys the future and the past at very the same time.

CALE (Los Angeles) A true renaissance man, Cale of the famed Los Angeles based K2S crew, embraces the power of a brush as much as the power of creating custom brushes in Adobe Illustrator. In between those two tools are a wide assortment of creative weapons ranging from aerosol cans to simple paint rollers. Cale has a deep respect and admiration for the arts and his sole mission is to keep the traditional skills of master craftsmen alive and thriving. Though having been born with drawing ability, the first true art lessons did not begin until the age of 18 at which point the world as he had seen it changed in a dramatic way. He studied the art of masters like Leonardo, Michelangelo and Tiepolo by repeatedly recreating their sketches and reading about their lives. In a year’s time he began working and studying under well-known muralist Richard Wyatt on several public arts projects through-out Los Angeles. He also began studying Graphic Arts at LATTC and, with a small scholarship, also studied painting at Art Center. He kept his connection to the streets but with his ever-growing knowledge of fine art, his street art soon evolved into a more realistic and complex style of graffiti art. The experience gained by working on large-scale arts projects prepared him for his next step; painting scenic backdrops for movie studios like Warner Bros. and CBS amongst others. Today, his versatility and expertise makes Cale a highly-sought after painter, illustrator and designer. He continues to draw and create on a daily basis and seeks new and more challenging creative assignments.

CAT CULT and SURGE (Los Angeles) “Cats have been praised and held in high regard dating back thousand of years. Egyptians mummied cats to honor deities and the Ashanti people of Ghana were known to occasionally execute any man who killed a feline. In the tradition of honoring one of human’s greatest companions, a group of street artists started the appropriately titled Cat Cult. Based out of Los Angeles, Cat Cult utilizes a variety of mediums including illustration, printmaking, stencils, wheat paste, photography, painting, sewing, and graphic design.” — Juxtapoz.com

COL WALLNUTS (New York) Col’s work consists of mixing 3D styles and silhouettes of letters that create a wide graphical pallete with color and movement. The pushing and pulling of these elements make for very strong markings in Col’s work. Using an open medium of acrylics, spray paints, oils, papers and found objects, Col’s works become emotional with an array of surface life. A lot of his pieces contain heavy strokes, negative space and strong drip work, with the application of various textures and environments. These different elements within each piece creates a complex statement that provides energy and life to surface structures and the environment the work has been painted in. With each work Col creates he hopes to facilitate a new and varied interpretation of color and life for the viewer. Works by Col are built on emotion and thought.

CHRIS RWK (New York) A child of the 80s, Chris’ world was often completely flooded with the imagery and ideas presented by his television, his comic books, and the music and movies of the time. Immersed in these various mediums, Chris began to store the images brought forward though these everyday experiences in what he refers to as a “mental journal”. This journal was a haven of his thoughts that he could refer back to whenever necessary. Chris’ paintings frequently cite past conceptions of popular culture embedded in his psyche’s cache. This use of intertextuality also serves to offer a comfort or familiarity of sorts to the viewer. Chris’ works frequently reveal everyday musings and people one would pass on the street without looking or thinking about twice. These images also aid Chris in the creation of a visual language comprised of his own iconographic imagery. Through the repetition of this imagery, Chris strives to familiarize his viewers with the language he has constructed. Chris believes that the notions within his pieces serve as a backbone to the many stories created by the onlooker when he or she is viewing the work. In 2001 Chris set in motion RobotsWillKill.com. Robots Will Kill is an arts site dedicated to community and exposure for artists/media often disregarded by the mainstream art world. Rather than featuring his own work exclusively, he opened it up to allow the possibility for it to become whatever it evolved into being. RWK has a core group of artists, those artists are Chris, Kev/Psyn, Veng and Over Under. Along with overseas affiliates ECB (Germany), Peeta (Italy), Flying Fortress (Germany) and Jesse Robot (Belgium). This extended roster of artists helps to promote RWK as we push the boundaries of art.

JESSE SMITH
(Virginia)
Since the latter part of Jesse’s high school years his art has absorbed the inner workings of the urban culture. Jesse’s goal has always been to translate his skewed perspective of the world onto paper, canvas, concrete or skin. In 1995 spray paint became his medium of choice. He really enjoyed the fact that he could cover a massive amount of space in a short amount of time. The one thing that attracted him to the graffiti culture was its bent perspectives, tweaked angles and explosive color. As he grew as an artist his influences broadened and he now draws more from inside rather than from reference. Over the last 15 years Jesse has gathered a lot of inspiration from over analyzing his everyday interactvions with people as well as today’s political chaos. The frustration he gathers from random situations and present day events has found its way into his art. His overall intent is to produce an analogical mirror of situations that we, as individuals and a country, are faced with on a regular basis.

Upon moving to Los Angeles, he and his family settled in the Pico Aliso Housing Development in Boyle Heights, where he was introduced to the process of creating aerosol-based murals. KOPYE
(Los Angeles)
KOPYE is a freelance/graffiti artist, who since at a young age has always had a mindset more so for art itself then anything else. He was born and raise in the valleys of LOS ANGELES. Having endless possibilities to create beauty combined with the raw passion inside of him, he ventured towards his own backyard, “Los Angeles” which to this very day is his classroom as well as his playground. Enthusiastic about all of the history already being made in the process he quickly expanded his knowledge with the local artist and their work. After some years of developing his form and furthering his techniques he eventually built his trademark not only in his artwork but also even in his name in itself. Although his art and current style is not easily categorized he does have definite direction and diversity. In his words he describes “My style is raw and sketchy. It’s gritty and grimy. Clean lines don’t exist.” His passion to bring out diversity had brought him opportunities of travel. And with those past experiences he has been able to broaden the limits in his work the knowledge that was obtained transferred to his art which today has made a signature that goes recognized as his style. The love he has for art has increased his interest to explore other forms, techniques, and expressions of art. At this moment he still resides in the valley where his dreams originated and also where they started taking on a more tangible form. He is currently in the process of transitioning his style into the fine art world. And still continuously pushing the limits.

MARCEL “SEL” BLANCO (Los Angeles) “I was born and raised in West Los Angeles, California. The city’s diversity surrounded me with a range of cultures, urban imagery, and music that significantly influenced my work. Like a lot of kids the skateboard was my mode of transportation. I was fascinated with the graphics found on the skate deck and could not stop from copying them. Wes Humpston was one of my favorite designers at the time. In my early teens I got into the L.A. punk scene. I was playing in bands so I would draw our gig flyers, t-shirt and sticker designs, and eventually started designing for other bands as well. Artists like Pushead, Shawn Kerri and RxCx (Ric Clayton) who did all of the art for the band Suicidal Tendencies were a big influence. In high school I discovered Subway Art, a ground-breaking book documenting the work of New York graffiti writers. All the bold colors, line work and movement within the letters mesmerized me. Immediately I began working on my own lettering and characters, and eventually progressed to putting my outlines up on walls. Soon after, I met other writers and joined WCA (West Coast Artists) crew, one of the seminal graffiti crews in Los Angeles. I had the honor of painting along side graffiti legends Rival, P-Jay, Miner, Risk, Pyro, and Wisk to name a few. This work, including a few of my pieces, has been documented in the book History of Los Angeles Graffiti: Vol.1. Recently I had a piece selected by the J. Paul Getty Museum for inclusion in the Getty Research Institute: Los Angeles Liber Amicorum - Graffiti Black Book Project. The book contains 143 works on paper by leading Los Angeles graffiti artists and resides in the Getty Research Insititute library archives. From my early graffiti/street graphics roots I branched out into graphic design and art direction working with the music industry creating CD packaging, marketing materials and as of late designing platinum sales awards for artists Eminem, Nicki Minaj and the Foo Fighters. Currently, I have been focusing on my personal artwork combining all the techniques and inspiration that influenced me through the years. For me, the challenge is to find the balance between graffiti and fine art, and how to seamlessly blend the two into a harmonious body of work. “ – Marcel “Sel” Blanco 22

MICE OF MILLIONS and THANKS ONE
(Los Angeles)
Above the Radar III is proud to present for the first time ever on the East Coast, Thanks-a-Million, a collaborative creative team made up by Thanks One and Mice of Millions, both artists residing in Los Angeles. Thanks is a longtime Los Angeles graffiti-artist (since mid 90’s) who under the inspiration of Kofie and Fear, developed a hyper abstract style for his letter structure that eventually expanded into backgrounds and landscapes which start seemingly unguided, but as the layers build, the pieces form begins to appear with an amazing display of color. When Thanks met Mice-of-Millions early 2012, the chemistry was instant. Mice-of-Millions, an illustrator focusing primarily on social satire and cartoon analogies paints maniacal characters using a minimal color pallet, which form the perfect juxtaposition between the styles of both artists. Thanks-a-Million murals featuring large bunnies or mice on top of insanely intricate stained glass of painted colors are currently creating a sort of calm inside the storm of graffiti on the streets of Los Angeles.

MICHAEL PIZARRO
(Los Angeles)
“My name is Michael Quinn Pizarro, and I am a third generation artist. My grandfather, Roberto Pizarro, was a well-known artist in Los Angeles in the 1950’s who had a shop on Olvera Street. I never had the chance to meet him, but growing up, my dad showed me my grandfather’s work, which influences me today. You can say it runs through our blood. A lot of my work is done on skateboards that I get them from a distributor. The boards have slight defects in them and come blank, so I get to start from a blank canvas while also keeping the boards from being wasted. I grew up riding them and have always been fascinated by the art on them; in my eye girls with tattoos seem to work well on the boards. I enjoy working on them, and the boards always are pushing me to try something new with them. I don’t limit myself to just skateboards; I try to paint anything that looks interesting to me.

To achieve a unique organic effect, Mike Pyro creates his letters by hand using a wide range of mediums from ink, aerosol, acrylic and enamel using tattoo machinery, brushes, pens and spray cans. His work is a true testament of patience and skill. The lettering of Mike Pyro has been published in Skin Graf Book, History of Los Angeles Graffiti Vol 1., Fine Magazine, Can Control Magazine, LA Times, LA Weekly, and was recently included into the Getty Museums permanent collection. Mike Pyro plans to release in 2014, an exquisite series of custom lettering hand painted on wooden panels.

PEETA
(Italy)
In my work, I endeavor to realize the sculptural quality of individual letters, namely the ones that spell out my own moniker Peeta. I break them from their generic typographical form, stylizing them with shape and volume beyond its mere semantic function. Thus my own lettering is brought into the fluidity of the urban, where words are continuously ruptured from their own histories, readapted into idiom and gestures learned off the street. The final result derived from the fusion between traditional lettering and three dimensional style has ended up in giving life to a unique kind of visual rhythm, created by the intersecting lines between sections of conic, cylindrical and twisting surfaces. The role of sculpture comes to be essential for this purpose. It represents for me a direct contact with three-dimensionality in order to understand the rules of light and shadows and to reproduce them.

In my most recent works, my aesthetic research is merged with more personal and even intimate contents linked to spirituality, the study of Sacred Geometry and proportion. Despite the depth of research into technical and formal perfection, the materialness of three-dimensional painting hides a deeply spiritual side. Shades of color and perceptive tricks are essentially the means to a progressive disclosure of my own personality. They are an implicit intermediary of a precise message — of my will to understand myself and subsequently to describe my ego. The choice to represent and reiterate my own name is already an attempt to paint a self-portrait. My works are aimed at revealing the deceptiveness of human perception, the fallacy of narrow and fixed points of view through visual tricks which, proceeding from the attempt to confer a three-dimensional semblance on a pictorial representation, ultimately reveal their will to deceive. Peeta, also known as Manuel Di Rita, is a graffiti artist since 1993 currently living in Venice. He is a member of the EAD crew (Padova, Italy), FX and RWK crews (New York City) and has participated in graffiti jams and Meeting of Styles events in Europe and the Americas. His work explores the potential of sculptural lettering, both in painting and in sculpture.

TEWSR
(Los Angeles)
T.ruth E.xists W.ithin S.elf R.ealization - is merely one of the acronymic meanings attached to the A.K.A. of this artistic anomaly. T.E.W.S.R. continues to explore the use of practical self-taught methods of observation to create a more surreal shine to his aerosol art and fine art as well. Born and raised in Orange County California and now living in Los Angeles, Tewsr began his creative warpath simply as one of the unseen masses. Eager for direction he found himself lost in adolescence creating without substance and with a wilted ambition. The search for a more virtuous outlet led him to the unbounded world of graffiti art in early 1993 and has encapsulated his world ever since. Tewsr works in various mediums; such as acrylic, oils, sculpture, graphic design, and virtually anything within reach. His hybrid style of graffiti art melded between an air of realism continually pushes the boundaries of traditional graffiti art and illustration; while stylistically adding a gritty twist to his fine art and commission work. Easy going and humbled by his philosophy “If I never learn everything, I will only gain more in pursuit of that knowledge.” Tewsr will no doubt be on the course for new techniques and ideas to captivate the minds of the seasoned gallery patron and perceptive street art enthusiast alike.
